Steele Cancels TV Appearance As He's Summoned to "Emergency Meeting" at RNC HQ
Republican Leaders: We Were Stunned By Michael Steele's Announcement He Had a Book At All

Above-the-Post Update!

"Emergency Meeting:" From ABC's The Note, Rick Klein reports...

WOW @chairmanmsteele just canceled his Top Line appearance. 30 mins before show time, out of blue. 15 mins earlier we were told it was a go

we were told Steele was called into an "emergency meeting" at RNC HQ and needed to cancel press. we offered to do intvw from RNC cam...

... were told that was not possible because it would involve RNC resources. OK then.

no details on the "emergency" from @chairmanmsteele that necessitated late cancellation. will let you know when we learn more.

Claim: No "Emergency." There was a noon meeting, but the RNC is now disputing it was an emergency meeting, as Steele himself told ABC.

Thanks to DrewM. for that. I sorta think it was an emergency meeting myself.

...

Original post:

This occurred to me -- why did I/we not hear of the book deal upon signing? Why were not aware of this a year ago?

We weren't the only ones in the dark.

Republican congressional leaders say they did not know that their party chairman, Michael S. Steele, was publishing a book until it was released this week, and they had no input in drafting what Steele is promoting as the blueprint Republicans should follow to win back power.

The release of Steele's book, "Right Now: A 12-Step Program for Defeating the Obama Agenda," surprised Republican congressional leaders, some of whom first learned of the book by watching Steele's television appearances this week, three top GOP congressional aides said Friday. The staffers would only describe their bosses' communications with the Republican National Committee chairman on condition of anonymity.

"The book came out and everybody went, 'Whoa, what happened?'" one aide said, adding that his employer, a senior House Republican, learned of the book by watching cable news.

"No one in the House or Senate leadership knew he had a book contract."

"He's freelancing," said another top congressional aide.

In other Steele news, he says he never sought the job of RNC chair, which will come as a surprise to those he ran against and those who voted for him (or voted against him).

I think Phil Klein is taking this a bit too literally -- he means he never had some lifelong ambition to do this, he just took the job because he was "called" to save his party or some nonsense -- but I read this statement as the first hesitant steps out the door.

"I never really wanted this job, you know" is the sort of thing people start saying as they acclimate themselves to the possibility of being fired or resigning.

And from yesterday: GOP aides warn Steele to button it.

Although RNC Research Director Jeff Berkowitz originally defended the campaign committee and Steele, aides ultimately acknowledged that they have little control over the former Maryland lieutenant governor and that they are not in charge of lining up his media appearances while he is promoting his book.

“Their response was, ‘We’re not booking the book stuff,’” a second GOP Senate aide said. And while RNC staff said they would try to get Steele “back on message,” this Senate aide said the frustration goes well beyond Steele’s latest statement [that the GOP can't take back the House this year], charging that he is using his position at the RNC to line his own pockets rather than raise much-needed campaign cash.

“Republicans at all levels have been working day and night to build a wave, and every time we turn around the guy standing on the surfboard is busy trying to collect admission to watch him ride,” the aide said, arguing that “he has an agenda of his own that isn’t reflected by the goals of the party as a whole.”

Eh, he's a good man, but this is not the job for him.

Thanks to AHFF Geoff for the tip on the emergency meeting.

4 We are just so, totally and completely screwed. Not only because we are on the vertical descent into HELL socialism, but also because we have no Republican leaders.
There should be leaders coming out of the cracks all over the country now with the opening the commies are leaving them, but no - crickets chirp uninterrupted!
Our effing erstwhile Republican politicians are so used to gaining office and then setting back and watching their retirement speed toward them that they haven't go a clue on how to pickup the reins and drive the leadership team.
We're screwed. The effing Republicans are as worthless as the Dems are evil.

He’s different, he’s gutsy (self promotion?)and he’s going to make a number of Republicans mad.”

A-You don't want a Maverick willing to cross party lines as GOP chair. We kind of have that with Steele, not good.

B-Palin is an active politician with her own power base. The Chair
needs to be someone all/most factions can agree on and get a fair deal
from. Fair or not Palin would be seen as advancing her own career and
base, not the party (again, see Steele).

exactly - 4.2 million jobs lost in 2009 - 8 million total lost since
dec 2007 - does that mean that Bush and Obama share the recession?

Is this Hope and Change?

2009: 9.3% unemployment

2008: 5.8% unemployment

2007: 4.6% unemployment

2nd derivative OT:

"Brown victory only way to save the economy!!

That should be the closing message the next 10 days.

Best thing you can do is go campaign in Mass for Scott Brown.

If Brown wins, the business community knows that cap and trade, Obaamcare and card check are dead, and confidence will improce.

Economic recovery could be only 2 week away -- Vote Brown in Mass!!!!!!!!!!! Save the Economy!!!!!

Elect Brown, businesses are now certain that a GOP filibuster can
stop Obama's agenda - and permanent hiring ensues from the massive
infusion of business confidence.

It's a winner even for lefty Mass douches!

The steady unemployment rate at 10 percent
reflected a sharp decline in the labor force. A survey of households
showed the workforce fell by 661,000 in December while a shocking
589,000 jobs were lost. Economists, however, consider the survey of
employers a much more reliable indicator of the state of the labor
market.

AND

* Some economists also
think the preference for temporary workers may reflect employers'
concern about the Obama administration's plans for health care reform
and what that will mean for labor costs. Temporary workers often do not
receive health care benefits.

38 Dammit. I was a huge Steele fan and was thrilled when he got the RNC chairmanship. But he has compelety blown up this week. I really think he has major ADHD and can't focus or drill down on anything. He accurately diagnosed a lot of the party's problems and even the RNC's internal problems when he took over, but he hasn't really fixed anything and now he looks like the whole thing was a scam so he could write a book and make some money. There have been people in Maryland saying this about him for years - that he is a slick, well-dressed, and well-spoken guy, but there isn't any "there" there and he was bound to fail once he got into a positoon where he actually had to produce results. I thought he ran a wonderful campaign for Senate and in any other year he probably would have won, and the Senate would be a good place for him. But heading the RNC is not.
I hate seeing these unforced errors. Newt Gingrich fell because he got greedy and wrote a book. Somebody should have worned Steele that this is not the way to go.

I disagree. The stakes are very high. Extreme Deficit Spending is ruining lives. The GOP taking the House will get people into jobs, get businesses rolling, perhaps stem inflation that would devastate many families. It also could help slow the extreme growth of government. Who knows what effect it may have on foreign policy, but we'd be able to investigate a lot of the problems we've been having in committees.

Steele knows, better than most, just how critical it was that he do his job 100%. He has used his position to make millions of dollars of personal wealth while ignoring the needs of the party. We need a leader really badly right now... Steele has shown the ability to aggressively speak against ridiculous liberal activity, but has missed his best opportunities and that has left the GOP in worse shape.

He has said we can't win the house, when we can. Why say that? He says the GOP has problems with race and blacks... he's the black GOP chairman... why isn't he saying the opposite and making a GOP that is obviously not racist (already is, of course). His freaking book characterizes the GOP's future as a 12 step program. What the hell? We're drug addicts now?

A clever Steele would call Obama's future a 12 step program, and underline Democrat racist, and say they democrats can't keep the house in 2010. really?

AA also is very very insular, i know a few people who got into it (and eventually out of it after long periods of time) and the first rule is cutoff all contact with non-AA people. not a written down rule, but a functional rule that they preach at the meetings.

109 Palin for RNC chair.
Actually, I think this job would be better suited for her than a Presidential run in 2012. She has the ability to rally the base and not apologize for her political philosophy the same way Howard Dean did for the Democrats, and it would allow her to develop further executive experience--like it or not, even though there were perfectly valid reasons for her resigning as Alaska governor, the fact she didn't finish her term is going to be a negative mark against her in a national race.
If she spends a full term as RNC chair showing an ability to raise money, get GOP members elected, and raise the conservative profile in a positive manner, it makes her a much more compelling Presidential candidate if she chooses to run for that in the future.
For all the baffling stuff that Steele has done since he took over, I still like the guy, but he's out of his depth in this job. If Republicans make significant gains in 2010, it will be in spite of him, not because of him.

I can live with No Name White Guy, but he MUST be able to be vibrant, responsive to the daily foibles and transgressions of the Obama administration, and able to verbalize the party philosophy in a way that makes the Republican Party attractive to everyone who loves freedom. He (or she) has GOT to be able to show why the Republican Party is good for America and Americans, and THAT is what a big tent is about. Not expanding the tent so others will come, but showing how attractive the tent is so others will come and make it bigger because it's a great freakin' tent.

Ken raised over 12 million dollars for his gubernatorial race. As State Treasurer, he managed billions of dollars in investments and oversaw a large staff.

Concerning immigration and national sovereignty Blackwell believes, “Our strategy to win the bulk of the Hispanic vote cannot involve granting amnesty for illegal aliens or foregoing our national sovereignty and failing to secure our borders.”
As a political activist for more than 20 years, I am most excited that Ken Blackwell agrees that, “It is absolutely the job of the RNC Chairman to stand up against the use of public funds for liberal political purposes, and I will lead in taking on these efforts
Concerning claims that the Republican Party has “lost its brand,” Blackwell states, “That means Republicans must stop growing government and spending taxpayer money. We have to stop worrying about receiving the love and affection of the liberal media and stick to our guns. The American people want a party that stands for fiscal responsibility, defending our nation at home and abroad, and fighting for a culture of life

124 Steele is clearly trying to cash in on his high profile RNC job. He's trying to get rich and famous, and parlay this short job into a career as a media-friendly pundit.

It's understandable, but not admirable. Movements need leaders devoted to the cause, not their own pocketbook.

In today's age being a politician is a good way to get rich. Fame=money. If nothing else, from book sales. Both Obama and Palin, to give two examples, went from well-off to very, very rich through book sales. And I don't begrudge them that.

What a smart politician does is convince his followers that his book, which he alone gets rich off of, is actually a selfless manifesto for the cause engaging in the battle for hearts and minds.

Of course, if your supporters love you then they don't mind you getting rich. They want you to get rich so you have the money to wage the media battle. The people who bought Obama and Palin's books are happy their person is getting rich.

So Steele a) didn't play it smart and work the political angle well and b) doesn't have a base of supporters who love him and get a contact-high from him getting rich and powerful.

All that said, I expect to see Michael Steele making the pundit rounds for the next decade. He's glib and media-friendly, and being black helps. He'll be a media regular even after he's fired from this job.

Palin would kick major ass as Chairman, Chairwoman? Person?, of the GOP.

There is no question she would be able to pick and choose where and when she would get on the air on any network show, tv or radio, or what have you.

Only problem is that a large number of GOP deep pockets are moderate/liberals so there goes that. But that's ok in my book because then we'd actually have a chance to remake the GOP into a conservative party.

135 Romney would actually make a really good chair. He's good at money raising.

He won't take it for the same reason Palin won't... you can't do this and run for president in 2012. Theoretically you could, by quitting, but not without problems.

Palin can't take this job because she doesn't even really like the GOP all that much. She's a Republican and all, but I don't think she's the kind that meshes at all with the beltway or the inside RNC.

Half the douches in DC would instantly start leaking bullshit about her.

money, get GOP members elected, and raise the conservative profile in a
positive manner, it makes her a much more compelling Presidential

Except she can already do that now. She raised how much money for Hoffman by just a Facebook posting? As the media imposed stigma on her begins to dissipate, she'll take a more active role in the candidate she likes. The snowball is starting to barrel down the hill.

More from ABC's Rick Klein:

at noon. [N]ot, however, an "emergency RNC meeting." [F]or what it's
worth."

I think the whole thing may have been a stunt to get Klein more Twitter followers.

BUT, How awesome is this?

Liz Cheney's group, Keep America Safe, is out with a new video that
casts President Obama's response to the Christmas Day terror attempt as
a parody of the television show "24."
The video uses unflattering moments from the administration's
response -- Gibbs and Napolitano intoning that "the system worked,"
Obama golfing -- over high-adrenaline music and the sound of a ticking
clock.
The ad, among other things, confirms the show's central place in the American argument about security and civil liberties.

151 Rove, put the spider at the center of the web. The job is to WIN: win by raising money, developing candidates, having a feral knowledge of the minutiae, knowing when to go for an incumbent's seat hard and when to keep the powder dry, and the job is to defend the party. He is never going to run for anything and your going to be paying him anyways.

152 Steele is acting like he's in the pay of the DNC with these flip, stupid remarks while shilling a book 10 months from a critical election.
Whoever has the juice to fire his ass- do it now and hire either Liz Cheney or Ken Blackwell.
Steele has forfeited the trust of the base with his bizarre behavior.

Posted by: jjshaka at January 08, 2010 03:30 PM (m3OLM)

153 For not really wanting to chair the RNC, Steele certainly campaigned my mailbox with stuffed envelopes of his pre-appointment massive correspondences. What a shame that he would allow chairing the RNC to become a distraction from his professional political career. Is he running for Senate?

It's one thing to never listen to party membership; and another to keep polling with simplistic questions that never reach conclusions. One step forward, two steps back for the party. That the RNC movers and shakers posture as if they have covered both extremes is their own undoing.

A CONSERVATIVE CHAIRMAN will garner the majority of America's citizen voters now, whether chairing the RNC or a Conservative Coalition.

Posted by: maverick muse at January 08, 2010 03:31 PM (+CLh/)

154 Yeah, I could never figure out, since there was a move to nominate a black man that Ken Blackwell wasn't the obvious choice. I hope he runs for something. Ohio made a big mistake not electing him, as they're probably discovering.

Clearly, Steele had been kissing the right DC asses. Even then, I thought, that's OK. The guy's a tool, we need a tool to be RNC chair.

The problem with Steele is that he isn't a tool. If he were, his message would be simple: Everything Republicans do is teh awesome, everything Democrats do is teh suck. That's what an RNC chair says on TV.

And he raises money. And you don't do that by running down the GOP.

I can understand him trotting out excuses for Scuzzyphobia, but once she turned, she was evil, throw her under the bus.

Yep. Palin Rogue takes the path independently determined best on
constitutional principle through common sense, whether or not it is the
easiest, most popular or most familiar, or has the latest elitist
precedence.

When the House flips this fall, I hope the flip is backed with an unmistakable "SHUT IT DOWN!" sentiment. That would leave them with nothing to do but write a DoD budget and hold investigatory hearings on everything.

Palin has an impressive record against corruption, and as corrupt as Holder is, she could run a shadow DoJ off her Facebook page.

Posted by: MikeO at January 08, 2010 04:06 PM (Ce+tv)

163 The best thing about Fred Thompson leading the RNC is that he already reiterated the established conservative party platform during his potus campaign, and wouldn't be flopping about trying to figure out what to think like the present rainbow trout out of water looking for an escape from the responsibilities.

Fred won't campaign for it. The RNC would be lucky smart to get him.

Posted by: maverick muse at January 08, 2010 04:09 PM (+CLh/)

164 MikeO

As popular as Palin is, as publicly shamed as her detractors are (admitted or not--Noonan for example), without an immediate public backlash against Obama, Holder would be hard pressed to push their thuggery against her further. But no doubt, rather than fulfilling Constitutional duties to protect the Constitution and our nation of citizens from terrorists and fraud, our national intelligence services are directed against legitimate US citizens disgusted by Obama's fraud and corruption, proven by DHS Janet Napolitano's initial directive threatening law abiding veterans and conservatives.

165 Wigglesworth 135, nah, the RNC this year can easilytake the job up to January 2011 "because of the emergency!"and not be called a quitter afterward.
We would need a chair who has a decentCongressional-race track record, though. Palin failed to convince Stevens to take a hike before he imploded. Also her whole schtick is "maverick" and, as we see in Steele, the RNC needs a tool, not a loose cannon. It's unfair but this is what RNC voters have to consider.
I'd recommend Dick Armey...

173 Michael Steele is the biggest fool. I'm so sick of getting the RNC donation solicitations with his dumb ass pleadings. I keep sending them backtelling themI will donate $100 if they get rid of him just for the fun of seeing him booted.
Steele is clearly the obligitory affirmitive action statement by the RNC just for the sake of portraying themselves as "look how inclusive we are". It's not necesarry. And even if it really were neccessary, there are many other more highly qualified negro candidates (BTW I read somewhere that the 2010 Census form is using the term "negro", so I don't think I am out of line here if our liberal controlled congress finds it appropriate to use that term in identifing "african americans"... the more politically correct term.... as opposed to the improper italian reference "mulignan"..... my personal preference).
Condoleeza Rice would be my choice, although she seems to have fallen off the political radar. I am confident that she would raise aboat loadof money for the cause.
Even dumber than Steele here is that the RNC can't figure out that they need to ditch him like yesterday. One of the huge reasons that they can't raise money and see their hardcore conservative base deserting them and sending money directly to the conservative candidate campaign's.
And how dumb isSteele to constantly piss off all the same people he is trying to target to sell his book. Liberal Dem'saren't going to buy that trash... and now neither are republicans or conservatives. If the publisherprinted 100,000 copies on the first run, they lost money on the paper alone. He should have taken a lesson from Sarah Palin on how to energize your base target audience and sell books at the same time.... but obviously he is too stupid.

174 "Republican congressional leaders say they did not know that their party chairman, Michael S. Steele, was publishing a book until it was released this week, and they had no input in drafting what Steele is promoting as the blueprint Republicans should follow to win back power."
-- And this guy is the Chairman? What does he think his job is? I thought the party chair was supposed to, like, coordinate party activities like policy and, like, stuff, with, like, groups that might have some interest in stuff like that, like, maybe, the RNSC and RNCC and maybe even the State parties. OMFG, what a loser. Army lieutenants get yelled at for doing amateur shit like this. Army captains get fired for doing amateur shit like this.

Posted by: Penultimatum at January 08, 2010 09:44 PM (CIKgX)

175 How is a Chairman recalled.

Please, someone with at least a modicum of desire to win in 2010 fire this clown.

He's been a disaster from the start and he hasn't improved.

Let's face the facts; those assclowns in charge of the RNC decided "ok, we've got a black president to deal with - what do we do? I know let's have a BLACK man as Chairman! Yeah! Then we'll look all equal and unprejudiced and everything."

So they selected/elected (c'mon we know how these things REALLY work) the first black man that indicated he wanted the job.

Presto chango! The NEW Republican party. Now with more 'street cred' and 'ghetto savvy' to counterbalance the empty suit in the Oval Office. {spit}

Until the RNC gets their shit together; NO MORE MONEY! I'll donate to local parties and candidate but no money for the National or the Senate re-election Committees. {mconnell = warm bucket of spit unless he bucks up and starts to lead a FIGHT against this bill}

177 Ace... I forgot one thing in my last rant... I worked myself up into a frenzy writing it.. almost had a friggin stroke... sorry. Steele drives me nuts.
Regarding your headline of a cancelled ABC appearance and an emergency meeting... while I was driving home this evening I heard Steele hawking his book for the thousandth time this week on the Mike Medved show on WABC 970 Fox News radio show. Mike runs a nice program in the late afternoon drive time. He's a real mensch... a good conservative. WABC 970 has a nice lineup overall. But I was taken back by howMike was kissing Steele's ass... I still like Mike though. Steele took a few minutes to explain his Hannity statements the other night... it was lame.... he is a narccisist. Steele mentioned the RNC's support for Scott Brown and Charlie Crist without a mention of Rubio of course.
Whatever "emergency" there was or reason for a cancelled ABC appearance, it didn't keep him from appearing on the show this evening. I guess the RNC brains concluded that it was okay for Steele to just keep doing what he is doing.... a solid B+ on all their part.

Condi is most certainly NOT that person:

3) She totally sold Israel down the river in Bush's second term.

@75: After fundraising and public speaking, knowing the arcane state by state campaign rules/laws is important altho a wonk can fill in here for anyone

And we need someone who will totally reform the primary system.
For starters, no more open primaries! That's how McCain got the nomination--all those Dems crossing over to vote in the GOP primary in big huge important GOP states like Texas.
Also, we need to totally revamp the primary schedule so we quit letting Iowa and New Hampshire determine the race. No offense to people in IA and NH, but these two little states are in no way representative of the majority of the country, and they are a universe away from the big critical states like Texas and the important swing states like Florida and Colorado.

182 Open Primaries will be even worse in 2012. the Dems won't have a contest, and there's a huge percentage of dems, like a fourth or so, who loves the idea of dirty tricks.

There will be millions of dems crossing over to fuck with the GOP primaries if we don't fix them. Where has Steele been on this? Nowhere... because to him, the RNC chair is a part time gig. He's not thinking the long or short game.

I don't really care who the GOP chair is. it's silly to keep listing all these big politicians with a future. Let's get a stalwart, intelligent, inside ball kinda guy. I don't think it will affect voters much at all if we pick an unpopular guy. Just someone who will get the job done, and perhaps someone with no real future in politics. Karl Rove type a guy (though maybe Rove has too much other stuff going on).

No one who wants to run for president in 2012. Even though I said Romney would be good at raising money, he wouldn't unify the party very well, and has his own factions and future to consider when making decisions. Clearly, Steele has been thinking of Steele's future.

Steele making Steele look good came across as very smart when he was just a politician. Not so much when he's supposed to make others look good.

Regarding Palin, it seems to be her strategy is to create a third party type of movement, with lots of angry Tea Party protesters who are sick of the beltway, and then merge that with the rest of the GOP when she wins the GOP nomination (which she will, barring something really powerful). She's building followers who don't like the GOP label right now. I think it's a good strategy, and while Palin isn't the ideal candidate for me, I think she'd be better than W or Mccain, and I don't think Romney will be able to stop her (and I don't trust Mitt anyway).

So, whoever we pick for RNC needs to be able to adapt to that, in my opinion. That's not asking for much.
