| Overnight Open Thread (Mætenloch)Good evening morons! Moron Social Networking UpdateOkay the Yahoo AoSHQ group is up and running! Not to worry - it's ewok approved and not meant to replace the blog, the ONT, the AoSHQ Facebook group or anything else moron-related. The main benefit of a Yahoo group is that it allows morons to connect outside the blog while staying anonymous if they wish. To join you just need to create a Yahoo profile using your blog handle as your username, then request to join the group. You can either use your own email or the Yahoo email as your main contact. Currently wherestherum and myself are the moderators so we'll have to manually approve your request. If you want to stay private just set your Profile Settings so that only My Connections can see your info. Within the group other members will be able to email you without seeing your complete email. However if you respond to the email list, your profile email will be visible. Right now it's kind of empty but we expect to have an Ace and Brian Denehy FAQ soon. :-) Click to join AceOfSpadesHQ Rednecks Invent New Sport: Mudhole Skiing Cute puppehs strike back. There is NO WAY that the late Michael Jackson started out as one of those kids. They look like healthy, big-boned boys -- likely to grow up to be big guys like their father in back.
The solution is obvious: the elves took the real Michael and left a changeling in his place. It's a pity the Jackson family didn't know about the brewing in eggshells trick. Posted by: Trimegistus at January 06, 2010 10:37 PM (GQhsP) Posted by: Dang Straights at January 06, 2010 10:37 PM (/gEp8) 20

I love the evolutionary-biology explanation of the difference between men and women shopping. Among early humans, men hunted and women gathered. Gathering involves wandering around looking for something good; hunting involves tracking the prey and killing it, then bringing it straight home.
The only problem with that explanation is that evolutionary biologists don't hang around with hunters very often, so don't see the immense amount of hanging around and drinking involved in the hunt. Posted by: Trimegistus at January 06, 2010 10:44 PM (GQhsP) 36

preference for the insurance tax contained in the Senate's health overhaul bill
Another campaign promise broken. Lots of people under $250K/yr have "Cadillac" plans provided by employers. A lot of people with families stick with lower paying jobs because the health plan might be better. What I suspect is there's going to be a lot of unintended consequences fall out of this should it pass. If companies can't afford to pay certain types of employees off with superior security aspects to retain them, there's going to be a lot of movement in the workforce. I've essentially abandoned most of my house due to the cold and
retreated into a bedroom which can be kept warm with a small space
heater when the door is closed. Heating the whole joint with this
level of cold just isn't economical.
This is easily the coldest winter since I've been living in south FL.

They're selling "throwback" Mountain Dew made with real sugar for a limited time. It's actually pretty awesome. We get real-sugar Coke in NYC every spring (Kosher for Passover), but this is my first exposure to original recipe Dew.
The bottle features a slack-jawed yokel holding a moonshine jug, two Ya-hooo!s and a promise that the Dew will "tickle yore innards," whiich of course cried out for research. Apparently before it became the beverage of Xtreme snowboarders in the Colorado Rockies, Dew was born amid a hillbilly craze in the early Sixties. The comic strip Li'l Abner, the Beverly Hillbillies, an inexplicable run of hit yodeling records... Who (under the age of 50) knew? It only took a quarter lemon to make this version drinkable, where the current recipe demands a half lemon. And, yes, it still turns your pee a fluorescent yellow. I don't necessarily buy that women's feet are getting larger (other than because women are getting taller). I think sizes are changing. My body has changed very little in the last ten years, and in that time, the clothing size I wear has gone from a 4 to a 0, from a 2 regular to a 00 petite, from S regular to XXS petite, etc. (depending on the type of clothing and the brand). In shoes, I used to occasionally be able to wear a 6, but now it's always too big for me (which pisses me off because very few shoe manufacturers make 5.5 narrow; usually, narrows don't start until 6). I assume that assigning a smaller size to a given article of clothing is done to make women feel better about themselves.
So, I propose that British shoe manufacturers could be doing it the other way around - assigning a larger size to the same shoe to make women feel bad about themselves. Alternatively, I've noticed that the Daily Mail spends a lot of time running down size 0 women, to the cheers of the commenters ("she's not a real woman!!!"), so there is definitely a bias against smaller people operating in Britain. So maybe wearing bigger sizes does make them feel better about themselves. (I always get irritated by those articles because I used to be a 2 or 4 before the clothing manufacturers changed sizes. I'm not kidding - I have ten-year-old 2s and 4s in my closet right now that are smaller than the 0s I've bought more recently from the same company.) Personally, I would just stop telling women that they need to be a certain size, and then I would use actual measurements, as with men's clothing. But that would probably be too logical. Anyway, my actual point is that the article screamed WOMEN'S FEET TOO BIG without considering the possibility that maybe it's the numbers on the shoes that are changing. My feet got wider because I spent years going without shoes in the house, as I lived in Asia. I still don't feel right wearing shoes in the house, even though I'm in the US.
I used to wear a size 7m, but now I can wear a 7 1/2 m, or a 7W. My feet are the smallest of my whole family. I have a niece who is 5'7", and wears a size 10 shoe. Her father's side of the family has big feet, so bless her heart, she has to look hard for cute shoes. Rum@142: I think the entire production run is sugar for a few weeks. There's apparently a whole big cleaning ritual that makes it more practical to eat the added cost for a few million gallons than to do a two-tier production.
The sugar version has a distinct yellow bottle cap that shows up in major supermarkets and local groceries around March 1. I would guess that in cities with fewer Jews, it's more of a niche product. Posted by: Little Miss Spellcheck at January 06, 2010 11:36 PM (xqhoO) 215

The Breakers is so dated IMO.
I would use the term "period" rather than "dated". The Breakers is trying to project the ambiance of "old" Palm Beach from the 30's through the 50's. I rather like some of the older houses out on the island from that period. The old ones are smaller and very unique, each having a theme (sometimes a pretty strange theme). A lot of that architectural history is being destroyed though. New money fools or trust fund babies come in, take some older place with real character, then rip it down and throw up some generic $10M McMansion that looks like all the other McMansions. The douchenozzels that run Palm Beach Polo did this recently. Plunked a gaudy $10M McMansion right on the beach that doesn't fit in with anything around it. PA - I don't have anything against The Breakders. I used to stay there when I was younger. But The Four Seasons is a much nicer hotel, and exudes the luxury for that calibre resort. Now, I'm not staying at either place these days. My dad lives in West Palm Beach. And, December of '09 was the last time I stepped foot into that city and it might just be the last based on my experience there.

Because women as a whole take their cues from gay men who hate the female body. And women do it to themselves. We think we're imperfect, not matter what a man tells us because we know/think other women think we're imperfect. It's a vicious cycle. And without the hang ups, you also get People of Walmart. City Center looks nice, but I wouldn't set foot in it. I know some of the guys who worked on wiring the joint and they said its a nightmare that's waiting to burn down or electrocute someone. When an electrician says don't set foot in a building I tend to believe them ;->
It was a "rush job" jammed through by Lois Frankle to try and burnish the image of West Palm, but many corners were cut in the process. Many fat envelopes had to have crossed inspector's palms for it to "pass". Before getting back into the science/engineering gig I did some work on a high end condo just down the street from City Center setting up all the heavy switch gear hooked to the big FPL transformers outside (serious stuff, 2,000A breakers and shit like that). That joint was really bad too. You couldn't walk 10' in any direction in the place without spotting at least a couple of blatant electric code violations...and it was 7 or 8 stories high with the footprint of a football field...yet it kept "passing" inspections. I walked away from that job. Couldn't take it anymore. I can't be crude, and I have a conscience. Whenever someone told me to install an electrical code violation, that was always my que to head for the door. Posted by: Purple Avenger at January 07, 2010 12:04 AM (xskrY) 303

Girl Thursday, I didn't know you were in NC and a Duke fan. Can I have your opinion on something, please? Because I've never been to either one, but based on lots of stories I've read and stuff I've heard, Duke and UNC seem to be the absolute most vile antisemitic colleges in America, campuses with big radical muslim presences and lots of jew-hating faculty and students, more than even in the california universities. Which is why I've always stayed away from them. But am I totally off-base in that impression? I was reminded of this all today because a big story in the news was a study about how American Muslims are really peaceful and moderate and not at all terror risks, but then the moment I heard it was a Duke study I laughed because I am so used to islamic propaganda from them.

PA, the Breakers up north was definately your kind of place. Dark and seedy, yet open and breezy at the same time. The guys from the various airfields and test units would go get hammered there and sleep it off in the little rooms on the beach - we used to throw explosives into the surf, set off smoke, etc when they would run out of Jack. Never saw the local PD within a mile of the festivities.

Here's the thing about insecurities..... Two types: 1. Those that are overtly and always hating on themselves. Not just dieting, but going on and on and on about the fucking dieting. Enough. Give it a rest already. and 2. Those that are always saying "Me, insecure? Pfft, no way!" and then talk about how great they are allllllll the time. Overcompensate much? Every woman has their insecurities-- *I think* it's how they project them that counts. (Girl Thurs-- that was not said towards you (as you just said you weren't insecure). Ahoy polloi. Started watching the Tonight Show for the first time since Conan took over. Matthew Broderick is on. Cringeworthy. Had to turn it off. Conan was better on his other show. He seems to think every moment needs to be funny. He forgets it's an interview show and that part of it can be simply interesting. Let the guest take the ball. Thus, no need to try to riff off a silly dream Broderick mentioned. Let it go. Ask Broderick about his fucking career or what he's got coming up next or something. Ask him about his interesting experience doing [whatever]. But Broderick was trying to make some point and unfortunately came up with a bad example. Conan seized on it like a Pit Bull. And fiercely squeezed nothing funny out of it for about five minutes. Look down, Conan. That blue paper. Ask one of the questions you have written down. Not every moment has to be funny. Watch some old Carson episodes and see. Go with the interesting stuff until something funny comes up. If not, stay with the interesting stuff. Anyway. I hate watching a show and becoming uncomfortable like that. Prolly won't watch it again. Posted by: Guy Fleegman (rdb) at January 07, 2010 12:22 AM (W/Igj) 366

Yes Levin is much smarter than Beck, but Beck is much smarter than a bag of hammers, and the hammers definitely have the drop on Hannity), so I listen to this fun local Virginia sports show instead (Inbounds with Mac Macdonald), and they've been having a lot of fun with a Coach K clip this week, where he really gets on a reporter over the appropriate use of the verb 'bristle,' it's pretty darn funny, I'll try to find it online.

"Dang, Intrepid, not bad at all.
Screws or nails? Finishing with vinyl?" Screws, countersunk. Going to finish with an almost 3/4 inch plyboard, with a layer of sanded side 1/4 inch on top. We couldn't find sanded side 3/4 ply board at our local Lowes, so we got the almost 3/4 inch and an additional 1/4 inch smooth board to top it. We'll put a layer of vinyl linolium on top - Mom and Pop have had it for a few years and wanted to put it in the laundry room, but never got the chance. It's still good to go, as far as we can see. We get the linolium in and then we'll finish the walls with 1/2 inch ply board with quarter rounds around the edge. But spring is a bit far off right now..... I usually listen to political talk radio all day, but I can't stand
Hannity (how can Levin mock Beck for being dumb and then be such good
friends with Hannity? Yes Levin is much smarter than Beck, but Beck is
much smarter than a bag of hammers, and the hammers definitely have the
drop on Hannity), so I listen to this fun local Virginia sports show
instead (Inbounds with Mac Macdonald), and they've been having a lot of
fun with a Coach K clip this week, where he really gets on a reporter
over the appropriate use of the verb 'bristle,' it's pretty darn funny,
I'll try to find it online.
Posted by: Adrian at January 07, 2010 12:35 AM (HqFA1) --I would rather listen to sports talk than political talk for the most part. Damn I can;t wait to hear Tony Bruno again. I think Levin's friendship with Hannity has to do with Hannity giving him a lot of airtime before he had his own show. I understand what you're saying, Rum. But first - know that pregnant women have to pee like 10 times more often than non-pregnant women. For convenience sake, it might be easier for them to wear a bikini than to have to pull down a one piece suit. I'm not arguing, I'm just saying it might be easier for them to wear a two-piece if they want to enjoy themselves at a pool or beach.

Sassy, I went to Wendy's today. Got a Baconator, which was actually pretty damn good, and tried the fries. Fries weren't awful, but not great. I also got a Frosty Float. Coke with chocolate frosty (they were out of vanilla) and it was sooooo good!

The last few episodes of Dollhouse are also Hulu worthy for Summer Glau, they were the first Dollhouse eps I saw, wasn't hard to follow, and Summer was very good in them. Don't get me started on Bones. The socially inept thing is completely ridiculous, plus she doesn't seem to learn anything. The book Bones is so much better as a person (though I gave up on the books after Devil Bones due to utter silliness). And yes, no chemistry. It's like watching a dog fall in love with a stick. Which one does all the work? The dog. And the brain tumor thing. Yegads. Just.. leave Booth alone. Plus, the one relationship that was right, they broke up just for added drama. Apparently, in Hollowood, characters cannot get married. Ever. Marriage is becoming taboo. Posted by: soulpile at January 07, 2010 02:09 AM (3heD3) 597

Next they'll turn Sweets into a sick pervert or something. I hate the way they treat the interns, too. Like Daisy - at least she's back now, but she was unfairly treated. NCIS just got on my you-know-what list for that episode. And right after Ft. Hood! I lost it. I was hoping they'd go non-pc and have it turn out to be the chaplain. But nooooo... it was the white Christian brother. oi vey. (And NCIS LA did the same damn thing. When the white guy pulled out a bible, you knew he was the murderer. PGIS, I am so jealous! I could only afford to buy a single season, so I got #2, but there are so many great eps later on, too, wow. My all time favorite is when Spike and Buffy get magically engaged. Posted by: Adrian at January 07, 2010 02:42 AM (HqFA1) 626
When you watch an entire series as a marathon, do you notice all the times they run stock footage that you never noticed when the shows were a week apart?
Posted by: Rodent Liberation Front at January 07, 2010 02:45 AM (dQdrY) 627
I'm glad that I'm so deaf that I gave up on TV. It keeps me from swearing quite so much. Anyhow, I think I'll turn in right after we hit 666. I have to drive to town for a funeral, a neighbor of mine died. His wife saw he was in distress, was trying to get him to lie down, instead of sitting in the chair. He said "I love you", his eyes rolled up and he went away. Well, at least his lasts words meant something worthwhile. Posted by: Peter at January 07, 2010 02:45 AM (2iAAO) 628
Nope. Apparently he aided the cannibal but never actually killed anyone, as he had confessed previously. Sweets wanted to get him off, but for some reason Zach refused. Silly self-blame for the guy's death or something. Stupid hollywood writing an excuse to keep the kid from ever coming back. So there he rots, another open storyline forgotten in a drawer somewhere.
Posted by: soulpile at January 07, 2010 02:45 AM (3heD3) 629
Well I only got seasons 1 and 2 at first, but then I was sort of left hanging and I worried the same thing would happen again, so then I had to buy 3, 4, and 5. That one-click on Amazon is bad for me. I don’t think I’ll get the last 2 seasons though.
I'm turning in as well. Night. Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at January 07, 2010 02:47 AM (RZ8pf) 630

I have no problem with feeding ferals - as long as it's dry food. Wet food stinks to high heaven and attracts a higher percentage of coyotes/predators to the site, making sure that a cat (possible a tame pet) will become someone's meal. (We cannot seem to win this argument with our resident cat person).
