What The Hell Is Joe Biden Talking About On Afghanistan?

As if the Obama administration's Afghan policy wasn't already clear as mud, Sheriff Joe decided to wade into the debate today and add a few more pounds of muck to the mix.

"You're going to see that [troop numbers] chart coming down as rapidly over the next two years," Biden said after looking at a chart showing troop numbers surging from 33,000 at the beginning of 2009 to 98,000 in the summer of 2010. "This is not a Coin [counterinsurgency] strategy," Biden said. "We just want to make sure that the Taliban is diminished enough so that the Afghan government can contain it."

Perhaps most troubling, Biden said: "the president has made something exquisitely clear to each of the generals: He said do not occupy any portion of that country that you are not confident within 18 months you're going to be able to turn over to the Afghans. Do not occupy what you cannot turn over."

It's not a counterinsurgency strategy? Did anyone tell that to Obama, McChrystal or Gates?

I'm not sure if this is Slow Joe being Slow Joe (he was supposedly an advocate for a counter-terrorism based approach) or he accidentally let the truth out but there's already been too much confusion over the meaning of the December 2010 review, the July 2011 pull out and whether or not it's all conditions based, we really don't need any more 'nuance' added to the program.

Related Enough: The Weekly Standard takes a look at Joe Biden's, um, intellect and finds him wanting.

A little philosophy? Who better to cite at a summit on urban policy in Chicago than Aristotle, who, "over two millennia ago .  .  . recognized the defining advantage of cities. He wrote, and I quote, 'Men come together in cities in order to live; they remain together in order to live the good life.' That is as true today as it was then." Never mind that Aristotle's point in the Politics was basically the opposite--that men move beyond their local "villages" to form broader political associations, translated as "city" but also "society," with roughly the connotation of today's "nation." Oh well--it sounded nice.

Biden also dabbles in theology. In May, he quoted a line from G.K. Chesterton ("It's not that Christianity has been tried and found wanting; it's been found difficult and left untried") that must have struck its audience--the American Israel Public Affairs Committee--as an odd an-alogy. (Biden was likening Christianity to the Middle East peace process.)

I would say something like this.

In addition to my general preference that personal liberty in the form of freedom of choice for the individual be retained by the citizens as is possible, the government generally and this administration in particular have clearly demonstrated their inability to successfully address even the most simple medical questions. For many months now we have been told that a new plague will be and is upon us in the form of swine flu. The very government that has been trying to and is scaring the bejesus out of the population has failed totally in the most basic of precautions, vaccinations. Such vaccinations as have been provided have been too few, too late, and now, today, we learn that the quality is so low that 800,000 must be "recalled" (although I reamin unclear on how one is able to recall a vaccination that has been injected into a patient's arm). These are the people who will decide which of several options you or your loved one will be granted when they don't have a year to think about it, when they are dealing with a far more complicated situation, and when the issue is your life or death. Government is intrinsically stupid, clumsy, and slow but this administration makes the Three Stooges look like Nobel Laureates as they lie, bungle, and corrupt there way to sacrificing our lives, our fortunes, and possibly our sacred honor so that bureaucrats can replace doctors in making health care decisions.

Universal health care will not stop people from dying. Everyone dies. The only way to not die is to not have been born in the first place (I understand China has a handle on that policy), but where's the fun in that?
Also people that ARE getting medical help without it being paid for, is CAUSING a large majority of our government debt.

78 Posted by: YRM at December 15, 2009 04:22 PM (xNw7B)
Well, first of all, universal health care ain't so universal. It will still leave 34 million people without coverage, so that's a starting point.
Secondly, people are still "going to die"--perhaps more than now because the health care system will be stretched beyond its limits. Without an increase in providers (who are threatening to go Galt if this crap passes), there is no way that "less people will die". Also, there will be less health care dollars to fund research and development (something the U.S. does the lions share of in the world). There will be less innovation and less technology (add to that the taxation of "medical equipment").
You might want to tell your friend that the Democrats health care reform is not about health care. It is about control. There will be rationing, long lines, denial of care, less early diagnosis (refer him to the new protocols for breast cancer screening and pap smears). If he really wanted to see more people covered, he would admit that increasing competition, allowing people to purchase health care across state lines, increasing health savings accounts (which Democrats want to do away with), and most importantly, doing something aboutcontaining the run away litigation we have in this country (MD's in certain specialties are paying 6 figures for malpractice!) Defensive medicine costs the U.S. between 60 billion to 200 billion dollars a year (depending on which study you look at), and is estimated to be 10% of the cost of health insurance premiums. In 2009, The CBO did a study that estimated that government health care programs could save $41 billion over 10 years if nationwide jurylimits on pain and suffering and other curbs were enacted. This was 10% higher than the CBO estimates last year.
You might also want to direct your friend to the articles that are out there about the poor quality of care in countries that already have socialized medicine. In fact, Canada has some unsanctioned clinics that are peforming MRI's, same day surgeries, etc. because there is a market for them--people don't want to wait for care.
Good luck. I don't think you'll change his mind, and you are most probably going to be throwing your pearls to the swine, so to speak. Although I don't really care for Michael Savage, I am more and more inclined to agree with him that liberalism is a mental disorder.

Everyone in the room caught the phonetic reference to WTF -- which in the military and elsewhere means "What the [expletive]?"Nicholson and his colonels -- all or nearly all veterans of Iraq -- seemed to blanch at the unambiguous message that this might be all the troops they were going to get."*

146 Fun with literature (and stolen from Best of the Web).

When does a correction not need to be corrected:

"An error was edited into Robert Poppiti's column. The list of corrupt
politicians should have included the name of former Louisiana Rep.
William Jefferson, not William Jefferson Clinton."--correction, News
Journal (Wilmington, Del.), Dec.15

I think that this is a metaphor:

"The Nobel Committee rushed into bed with Obama. When the alarm bell
rang the next morning, six Norwegians found themselves sleeping next to
someone quite apart from the person they had viewed through gin-altered
glasses the night before."--Bonnie Erbe, PoliticsDaily.com, Dec.14

This analogy may be a tad too apt:

"The History Channel is planning its first scripted series and will base it on the Kennedys," the Associated Press reports:
The cable network says the eight-hour series is called "The
Kennedys" and will be told in a multigenerational manner akin to "The
Godfather."

Biden accidentally let the truth out. At least Biden let the cat out of the bag.

Anyone seen my cat?

172 ""According to a Senate aide, the White House is now threatening to put Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC list if Nelson doesn't fall into line."
I have read that the BRAC was the one truly independent commission.
Maybe not any more.

174 Obligatory "Thank God we don't have that backwoods hick from Wasilla as our Vice President" remark.

Someone let Joe know that the short bus is out front for him...

and don't forget your drool cup, Joe.

178 Phrases I never thought I'd need for a hundred, Alex, -What is, "Boy, I miss Dan Quayle!"
It really takes a lot to make Dan Quayle look good. What a fucking idiot. Not only is our strategy weak, but now we told the whole world what it is. Genius.

184 "What The Hell Is Joe Biden Talking About On Afghanistan?" AceOne might just as easily ask "What the hell is Joe Biden Talking about?" whenever his lips are moving. I mean, just because you think you understand him is not indication that you actually do. And it's not because he's smarter than you, either, so don't let him pull that "I'm smarter than you" nonsense on you.

185 Look, calm down folks. The military has a proper term for brilliant strategies cooked up in Washingtonby politicians. We used to call it "clusterfuck". Its all good...until it goes bad.

186 Wow. Simply wow.
So this is the guy that's supposed to be better than Sarah Palin? Scott Adams used to joke about people rising to their level of incompetence. Ol slow Joe has risen fall indeed.

187 It was crystal clear from day one that the plan was not a COIN strategy being the publicized withdraw date completely guts the main aspect of fortifying Afghani's mindset that we are in for the long haul and won't leave them hung out to dry.
The strategy couldn't work without that main aspect.

Obama announced a surrender, pure and simple.
Everyone should keep in mind that past generations of Americans literally fought and died against the vile ideology that our current POTUS is, rather successfully installing in our country.

Our POTUS without a doubt stands with the Marxists/Communists and the muslims, Taliban or not.
