Lieberman, Nelson Both Say They'll Vote Against Reid's "Medicare Option" Version of ObamaCare

And Claire McCaskill says she'll vote against anything that fails to bring down the deficit.

Lieberman continues talking like a man who's mind is made up.

Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) both said a Medicare "buy-in" option for those aged 55-64 was a deal breaker.

"I'm concerned that it's the forerunner of single payer, the ultimate single-payer plan, maybe even more directly than the public option," Nelson said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Lieberman said Democrats should stop looking for a public option "compromise" and simply scrap the idea altogether.

"You've got to take out the Medicare buy-in. You've got to forget about the public option," he said.

If Democrats stick to relying primarily on the bill's subsidies, the legislation would pass easily and with bipartisan support, Lieberman argued.

Depends on the scale of the subsidies. This is a tremendously expensive thing, which is the primary reason it hasn't been done. (Other reasons: socialism doesn't work and socialized health care tends to be bad health care.)

I don't know what size subsidies he has in mind. I suppose if the Democrats went for that sort of thing, they might have their 60 votes -- maybe. They'd still be blowing up the deficit, without the cover of these fake "projected savings" to hide that fact.

Hopefully the liberals will resist all compromise and wind up with no bill at all. Edit: Although that seems doubtful; at some point, after proving to the netroots they tried and tried, they are going to want to sign the proverbial any-old-thing with the words "Health Care Reform" on the cover.

1 I have always thought that there was no way that the health care thing would fly. It is gratifying to proven right, so far.

3 Don't worry, they'll all cave. That's what Dems do. Lieberman is slightly more likely to take action against the bill because of his (I) status, but I think we've seen that "conservative Democrat" just means they have a higher price for their vote.

4 "...And Claire McCaskill says she'll vote against anything that fails to bring down the deficit."

The deal with Dems - they lie.

The howler "this won't ad one dime to the deficit" is a lie. The only once of truth found in that huge lie is that in order to keep it from adding to the deficit, the tax payers have to come up with funds. All billion trillion billion of it.

I have e-mailed both Nelson and Lieberman. Keep the pressure on, folks. They see the polls, they need to here from us, the great unwashed. Just be super nice about your objections.

Don't bother with Reid - he's a lost cause. Plus, come 2010, he'll be out of his job.

8 (re-post from down under)

I have to wonder what Reid has up his sleeve. He's probably going to
get some small portion of the bill rated as acceptable, get his 60
votes, and then insert some major legislative language into the bill
that NO one knows about. The bill will end up an unread mix of all
the disastrous regulations, kick-backs, penalties, tax increases, and
hidden costs that would have defeated the bill. -- Then it goes back to
conference. The desperation is so obvious, the House is already saying
- "yeah -um- we don't even need to see it, just take it on up to the president for signature."

Even leftists have to wonder where the honesty and transparency went?

Seriously - This is desperation time for Reid. He's gonna pull something astounding out of his ass.

Both Reid and Nelson also say that the medicare compromise along with adding to the deficit will also backdoor a singlepayer govt. option once the camel gets its head in the tent.

That is absolutely true. They need the soundbite.
Ironically, I think most folks understand clearly their soundbite is BS.

18 Maybe the Republicans should sidle up to Reid and offer to take the fall for this. "Just fail the damn thing and blame it on us; we won't cry foul."

Posted by: arhooley at December 13, 2009 03:47 PM (VuFy0)

19 Well, sure. The Dems do lie. So do the Repubs. But Lieberman has been pretty courageous, and this helps continue to give the public more comfort with opposing it.

I applaud him and Sen. Nelson for what they've done so far. They've got to be getting the stink eye all day long from their colleagues.

Did healthcare legislation get any traction before it became chic to drink latay? No. And Democrats weren't in control either. Betcha them latays make already loony loonies gay, too. 30 When it comes down to the end they will offer up a "face saving" amendment groin covering fig leaf and all the Dems will vote FOR it except for the exact same number of Republicans who vote FOR it to give them cover. That is what all of that left over TARP and Porkulous money is for. Those things have become a slush fund for bribing the corrupt members of congress. Its the Chicago way.

I have heard that there are 5 Republicans who plan on voting for this POS. Make no mistakeTM this thing will pass. We lost when they got it to the floor.

Everyone who has voted for this thing and who will vote for it in the future belongs in jail.

38 Lieberman who just voted for the 1.1 trillion budget bill today and on Saturday walked 3 miles on the sabbath to the Senate to give it his seal of approval for the first vote. Also includes this cast:
The Senate voted Sunday 57-35 on the legislation. Democrats Evan Bayh of Indiana, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Claire McCaskill of Missouri voted against the bill.Republican Sens. Thad Cochran of Missouri, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine and Richard Shelby of Alabama voted for it.

39 So out of about 60 Democrat's there's only a couple who have any principles?

Gives one a real sense of security in how many Obamacrats have any sort of principles, at least until the leadership comes up with a price to buy the holdouts off...

But then what can you expect when the GOP is locked out of any role in the process --

Obamafication
without representation....
Bend over and prepare
for domination...
