Getting the reinforcements in country is compounded by the fact that most of them are coming from countries up north that are, how do you say, friendly to Putin and requires much ass kissing to keep the lines of communication/supply open.  If I recall, we lost the one major highway from Pakistan into Afghanistan either late last year or early this year.  The Taliban took out the one large bridge that enables heavy armor and vehicles into country.  Funny how that happened.

Yep. And you will notice (though no one has ever mentioned it, for some reason) he has still not mastered the proper use of the indefinite article (off-TOTUS). The word "an" doesn't seem to be in his vocabulary. He uses a long "a", instead - "aaay enormous ...". It drives me up a wall and is clearly indicative of his non-American qualities. I am still amazed that I have never heard anyone say anything about this, and they seem to clean it up for the transcripts.

I was thinking the other day about the people who lecture us about saving the planet and yet live lavish, jet-setting lifestyles, claiming that they offset their carbon footprint with carbon credit schemes.  If they really believe that CO2 is going to wipe out humankind, then their use of carbon offsets is analogous to a person on a lifeboat consuming several times his daily rations of food and water, justifying himself by explaining how he's paid someone on shore to skip a few meals to offset his consumption.  If it's a matter of survival, you have to face up to the need for sacrifice.

In Obama's speech tonight, he simultaneously said he knows that the Afghanistan war is a war of necessity and a matter of survival for the West and said that he isn't willing to sacrifice his other spending priorities to ensure success in the war.  It's that same thinking that the carbon offsetters employ: it's such a dire matter of survival that they're willing to force other people to make whatever sacrifices are necessary.

"Limited war" was the rage in the 60's and 70's - Rumsfeld's early days.  It dropped out of fashion for a simple reason - it didn't work.  This is why the Powell Doctrine was like a breath of fresh air in 1991.  He said, in essence, if you're going to have a war, have a war.  Don't halfass it.  And it worked.  Also led to lower casualties on both sides, because it was over faster.  Now, look at all the peacekeeping operations in the Clinton years.  Bosnia and Kosovo are still going on.  We pulled out of Haiti on schedule, and had to go back a couple years later to re-fix the same problem, only worse. 

We put the Iraqis on a schedule, and it changed nothing. They are still the same lazy, corrupt people they were.  But they are trying to sell their oil to the Russians and Chinese instead of us.  What evidence do you have that putting the Afghans on a schedule will make anything better?
