You Can't Dig A Grave Without A Shovel Ready
Plus: Still Stuck on Huck!

As Maximus said, "Are you not stimulated?"

This news item is easily overlooked, and revealing: "Highway-construction companies around the country, having completed the mostly small projects paid for by the federal economic-stimulus package, are starting to see their business run aground, an ominous sign for the nation's weak employment picture."

The month the stimulus passed, February of this year, 6,593,000 Americans were employed in construction; in the most recent report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 5,966,000 Americans were employed in that field. In other words, while all of this stimulus-based construction was going on, the profession lost 627,000 jobs.

Not only did the stimulus fail to create a significant number of jobs in the overall economy, it had little or no impact in the one area that provided that much-hyped slogan: “shovel ready.”

Since I just stole Geraghty's whole post, let me link this takedown of Huck. And quote, um, merely most of it.

Joe Carter, probably the best part of Huckabee's presidential campaign, notes that the candidate really saw this issue differently from almost everyone else in the political world, for better or worse: "The governor seemed genuinely surprised that he was held responsible for the criminal acts committed by those whose sentences he had commuted as governor. It was as if he believed that simply having noble intentions and a willingness to make tough decisions would provide political cover."

...

Huckabee's initial statement, declaring, "should he be found to be responsible for this horrible tragedy, it will be the result of a series of failures in the criminal justice system in both Arkansas and Washington State" seemed to be deflecting his share of the blame. The criminal justice system in Arkansas, for example, was going to keep Clemmons behind bars until the year 2098 until Huckabee stepped in.

Today Huckabee went on Joe Scarborough's radio show, and finally used strong language - not to criticize his earlier decision, but to denounce critics of the decision as "disgusting" and lamenting "how sick our society has become that people are more concerned about a campaign three years from now than those grieving families in Washington."

It takes a particular bravado for a man in Huckabee's circumstances to contend that his critics are the ones who should hang their heads in shame; some people might find letting violent criminals go free early out of a misguided sense that they've changed their ways a clearer reflection of a sick society.

Okay, well, I ripped off that whole post pretty much too.

How about I link his posts on "Bloody Afghanistan" and Bush's "abandonment" of that war?

Update on Huckabee: Huckabee (in Allah's update) accepts partial responsibility for Clemmons while ripping the prosecutors who let him go (since Huckabee let him go), and states unequivocally that in this case religion played no part.

Well, we'll see.

As I conceded, Huckabee does have a point here: 108 years is a long spell for a series of felonies that don't include murder or rape. Still: Part of the decision is about whether this guy had shaped up, and clearly, he had not. Huckabee could have reduced 108 years to 30 years, rather than 11, and this guy would still be in the Slamma like MC Hamma, as Jane Lynch says in Role Models.*

* Possibly erroneously, as the film notes.

Spare Parts: Since I'm apparently just sticking into this post anything and everything that occurs to me, I want to note the witticism of "dr. kill" (I think): He called Michael Mann "Piltdown Mann."

Hee, hee.

He also said scientists were really angry and spitting venom about this sham and that a whitewash wasn't as in-the-bag as I was thinking.

Correction: I had the chronology wrong. SarahW (and other posters) inform me...

Ace, FWIW, Hbee commuted the sentence to 47 years. There is no record of prosecutors objecting in any official or unofficial way.

It's the parole board what sprung him after 11 years. They didn't have to.

Okay, so Huck reduces the sentence to a certain point, then the parole board springs him. But that had to be anticipated. Surely it wasn't a shock to Huck.

22 Huck and Obama are both done. Obama's stimulus went to mostly female-centric Health, Education, and Welfare spending in block grants to the states. That kept up or increased female employment in those areas but left White males hosed. The Rasmussen polls Hot Air has details something like 11 points higher anger among White men at Obama/Feds vs. White Women.

Huck had his Dukakis moment. Where he pretty much outright says that Blacks, particularly Black felons, deserve special, privileged treatment and that is not sustainable. Particularly not in a brutal, permanent recession where White guys are the first fired and last hired under the Diversity/PC regime.

Huck clearly pardoned this guy by his own admission because Clemons was Black. He would not have done so if Clemons was White (again, his own words). That does not fly in a nation racked by recession and around 75% White. That is demographic reality.

Huckabee's gross incompetence and dereliction of duty cost these 4 police officers their lives. As far as I'm concerned Huckabee should be tried as an accomplice to the murders, which he is, and then be strapped to the electric chair.

The whole"shovel ready projects" was BS from the get go. Most infrastructure projects take years to plan (environmental regs, etc.). If it looks like a project is not going to get funding the preparation work slows down or stops.

Also, looking at the Bureau of Labor Statistic numbers, the only private sector growth has been in health care. Everything else has gone down. However, government employment is going up.

48 Cicero, still, Ace said HB commuted his sentence to 11 years. That isn't what HBee did.

That lengthy sentence remaining was still there if Clemmons violated parole. Which he did. And got released again without any interference from Hbee.

Probably plenty to criticize Huckabee about - he wouldn't be getting it if not for his overall record of commutation of the sentences of violent offenders.

This cop murder, however, is the result of too many intervening failures for me to pin Clemmon's freedom on HB.

I think Huckabee is one of those guys whose head is conservative but whose heart is liberal, i.e. they know better, but sometimes their inner liberal inclinations wins out and they do stupid stuff. McCain is like this, too.

Rudy Giuliani is the opposite. His head is liberal, but his heart is conservative.

Charles Johnson also is, or was, schizo like this, too, he was a liberal who got scared by 9/11, started thinking more conservatively, but in the end, he simply grew tired of his head telling him what to do. So he told it to STFU and let his inner liberal rage. And what you see now is the result of his inner reconciliation.

That's because every major construction project requires umpteen studies (archaeology, wetlands, noise, economic impact, endangered species, habitat, etc.) before it can begin. It takes at least five years to complete these studies --  after which they are subject to public review which inevitably results in litigation by green groups.

It generally takes about 10-15 years from proposal to ground breaking for most major construction projects. And only if they have smooth sailing through the courts.

Oops! -- I almost forgot acquiring right-of-ways. Tack on another five to ten years if the property owners are holdouts.

Charles Johnson siting an article by a British writer explaining why he no longer is an AGW skeptic to explain why Charles "converted" himself. They both listen to "very thoughtful, intelligent people". If the pseudo scientific idiot is had actual read the article he might have seen this:

I talked to some brilliant scientists and thinkers, some mainstream Greens, some truly tough-minded scientists. There was James Lovelock, the man whose Gaia hypothesis sees the world as a single, gigantic organism.

Who is James Lovelock? Well he's a pseudo religious crank.

Richard Dawkins, author of The Selfish Gene, dismissed Lovelock's book as "pop-ecology literature." British biologist John Maynard Smith went further, calling Gaia "an evil religion."

The same Richard Dawkins Charles worships daily with posts and little love notes.

But it's a perfect example of Charles' attempts at appearing scientfic.

Instead of getting all my information from “skeptical” blogs and news sources, I started reading books and scientific journals and everything else I could get my hands on. I’m kind of obsessive when I get interested in a subject. (OK, not “kind of” — “definitely.”)  by Charles Johnson

Posted by: sissoed at December 01, 2009 06:45 PM

Exactly.  I  dislike Huckles but I can't pin this on him entirely.  He should have pointed out the facts, he reduced the sentence, which may or may not have been too long, and that left it open for the parole board.  But instead he pointed fingers and whined and now dug himself a hole he won't soon crawl out of...with any luck.

As I noted, the film walks this back as Lynch says "Well either he did go to jail or he came extremely close... I know he declared bankruptcy...."

No I don't think he went to jail, or was ever accused of a crime. I think he just went bankrupt.

Evening all.  It sort of strikes me that in the area of pardoning and/or commuting of a prison sentence the Govenor is the backstop of the process.  While providing mercy to an individual the Govenor has to hold the protection of society paramount in his/her decision process.  It would seem that Clemmons spent about 11 years in prision for a variety of offenses before Huckabee commuted a large portion of his sentence which  made him immediately eligible for parole which was granted in 2000.  The fact that he violated and was returned to prison in 2001 (to serve the vastly reduced sentence) seems to show that a mistake was made.

I think that this ends any chance at all of Huckabee running for president.  The moment he indicates that he is considering it again I think that his record in terms of commuting/pardoning will be under incredible scrutiny and one can but wonder whether there are a lot more errors to be uncovered (hopefully not as horrific as this one although I gather there was at least one other commutation where the released prisoner went on the muder someone).

85 Not only did the stimulus fail to create a significant number of jobs in the overall economy, it had little or no impact in the one area that provided that much-hyped slogan: “shovel ready.”

The CBO says that ARRA recipients claimed that 640,000 jobs were "created or retained" through September.

Whether those claims are accurate is another matter entirely...

87 Huckabee's clemency essentially reduced Clemmons' sentence to time-served after which Clemmons was released on parole.  He violated parole (shock!) and went back to prison until 2004 (i think), still well-short of the original sentencing.  There's a multi-part problem here:  Huckabee's gullability, the whole "credit for good behavior" thing that makes time-served a fraction of time-sentenced, and the ability of a career violent criminal to get out on bail when charged with child rape.  Haven't done all the math, but I think that even without Huckabee's gullability, this time bomb would have been back on the streets in time to kill those four police officers.

88 All of the prosecutors in Arkansas -- a shitload of them because the state has more counties than a houn' dog does fleas -- were up in arms over Huck's clemency policies. One let loose for every four days of his administration, more than 700 in all. If we still had newspapers worthy of the name, it would be interesting for one to dig up how many crimes they committed.

89 Huck’s a schmuck- with this Dukakis moment, he’s done for 2012

Mitt is in a political hole with conservatives for his failed Massachessets HC plan that’s hardly any better than Obama’s… and a pitiful response to NY-23’s special election drama (if there was ANY response, I sure don’t recall it).

Meanwhile, the Arctic Fox’s book is #1 while crowds swell at her signings… and a poll now shows her vs Obama’s approval numbers closed within the margin of error… I think we all can see where this is headed...

93 $800 billion for fixing the infrastructure of America!  No more collapsing bridges!  Fix the power grid!  Renew our 60 year old interstate highways!  Yay, Stimulus Bill!
Except...
"Shovel-ready?" quoth the feminists. "Aren't construction jobs mostly for men?  This cannot stand!"
And off they went to Washington, where they threatened and browbeat enough people to change 42% of the jobs to "jobs to fix our crumbling human infrastructure," and which were earmarked for women only.
"Shovel ready" jobs...?  Already closing down with the promised infrastructure renewal not done, and men back out on the street again, unemployed.
The jobs for women?  Teachers, social workers, etc.  Anyone think they'll be out on the street when the Stimulus funds run out?  Of course not.  They are permanent.  End result of Stimulus Bill?  About $400 billion in permanent new government jobs.

94 Gosh and Golly! It sure seems like it's easy to pin this on Huck!
Looking at it from a distance, why did the dirtbag get 108 years for two non-armed robberies in the first place?  That is what Huck is using for a defense.  Was it because Arkansas is full of a bunch of hillbilly racists? Or had he done lots more that they weren't charging him for, and the prosecutor let the jury in on it?  How the hell do I know, I only lived there for a couple years.
I just don't see any good reason to sentence anyone to that kind of time. I guarantee he had a license to kill and plunder as soon as he got in. No way he thought he was ever going to see free sky again. Eleven years knowing you were seeing all the world you ever would. If you weren't twisted before, you would be after.
Why not commute the sentence to a quick hanging? I think that would have been better.  If there is no rape or murder or maiming involved, why should a jury have the ability to choose such a long sentence?  Prison isn't supposed to be a life home, in my view. I think it should be punishment for your crime that has an end. If there is no end, kill the bastards and get them off my taxes!
Any crime that could get you that kind of time should have the Death Penalty attached to it. People shouldn't get life for stupid shit like getting caught three times doing non-violent stuff. If it's worth life, man up and throw the damn switch.  If we are going to decide that someone is beyond repair, send him home and let God fix his ass.  Don't let him be a role model for his fellow inmates.
Huck tried to do a good deed, if you wanted to do that for this dirthead, it should have happened sooner, and let him work for his parole. This worthless sack was gone before Huck ever got there, and people need to figure that out.  You can't save the lost. Whether you're talking about someone feeling like he has been made an outcast, or a child molester, or someone who thinks people taste like pork, you can't come back from some of those trips.
It's just like when people worry that someone will get the Death Penalty when they were innocent for the crime.  Innocent people die every day. Lots of them from the people we're protecting from the Death Penalty. Get over it . Let God sort them out.
But, at least Huck ain't a contender anymore, right?

Posted by: Notsomebodyelse at December 01, 2009 09:16 PM (ALgvI)

95 Not to defend Huck-a-dick but it is reasonable to expect the Parole Board to only release him if he had changed. I would assume the parole board are the experts in that area. In Huck's case he was righting a wrong in his mind that a poor black kid got nailed with 108 years. While passing him off to the parole board to do their duty and verify if he should be freed. Its apparent the board fucked the duck on this one.

You stupid fuck, this subhuman had committed at minimum of 13 felonies including raping a young relative before he want on this cop killing spree. This piece of shit was a menace to society and completely unfit to be among the civilian population. He should have been imprisoned for life as he originally was or executed; all the fault lies with Huckabee who should share the murderers fate since he ultimately made the decision that set this all into motion. .

99 I'm not a Huck fan but don't take your eyes off the bouncing ball. Those two lib f*ck judges in Washington who let Clemmons out on bail had more insight into the guy than Huck did in 2004. By 2009 Clemmon's rap sheet was far more disturbing. The Washington court system had far more intel.

That happened after he should have been thrown back in for his first parole violation in Arkansas, and he never should have made bail after they had him in jail in Washington.  And if you could read for comprehension, you'd see that I favor the Death Penalty over life and longer terms in prison.

The sentence that was commuted was for burglary and non-armed forcible theft.

107 ...the naked disdain for fat country hicks betrays your rockefeller elitism.

not a huck fan, and would hate to ever see him run again.  always had problems with his massive expansion of social programs and inclination to grant clemency and commutations.  i like this site a lot, because generally, you tend to focus more on logical interp than on impassioned critique (and cuz you say "fuck" a lot).  but this non sequitur really tells on your illogical hatred of the huck:

"Huckabee could have reduced 108 years to 30 years, rather than 11, and this guy would still be in the Slamma like MC Hamma, as Jane Lynch says in Role Models."

...then...

"Ace, FWIW, Hbee commuted the sentence to 47 years. There is no record of prosecutors objecting in any official or unofficial way.

It's the parole board what sprung him after 11 years. They didn't have to.

Okay, so Huck reduces the sentence to a certain point, then the parole board springs him. But that had to be anticipated. Surely it wasn't a shock to Huck."

so, on the one hand, you say huck is an idiot for commuting the whole sentence instead of commuting it to something like 30 years.

on the other hand, you learn huck commuted the sentence to 50% LONGER than your (retrospective, having-facts-available-to-you-that-huck-did-not) recommendation, and he's still an idiot for, this time, not knowing the parole board would fuck this up?

again, i've been against huck's "compassionate clemency" since the primaries (still voted for him over mccain and that looney mcrooney from my own state, who were the only three still left in the face by the time it come to tx), and i don't want to see anyone who is such an easy target representing my political ideology.  the disingenuousness of calling someone an idiot for doing somethat that you just in the last breath called them an idiot for NOT doing is distasteful.
