Re-Posts: CRU Admits They Threw Away (??!) Old Data; Agrees to Release All Data... That They Haven't Yet Thrown Away

The most important outcome of this is the pressure to actually release data and methodologies, something other scientists generally due without facing criminal charges for FOIA evasions.

In case you've been as away as I have this Thanksgiving weekend, here Purple Avenger's post on CRU's stunning admission that, um, their dog ate their homework. (The science is settled; PBUH.)

SCIENTISTS at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based.

It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years...

As PA notes, this isn't new -- they had previously given this excuse when their data was demanded. It certainly is the first time it's being prominently covered, of course.

Given Phil Jones email stating that he would rather hit the delete key than press send regarding his secret "scientific" data, this "throwing away" of data takes on the air of the ominous.

They're now agreeing to finally let people look at the data. What's left of it, anyway. Or are they?

In a statement welcomed by climate change sceptics, the university said it would make all the data accessible as soon as possible, once its Climatic Research Unit (CRU) had negotiated its release from a range of non-publication agreements.

The publication will be carried out in collaboration with the Met Office Hadley Centre. The full data, when disclosed, is certain to be scrutinised by both sides in the fierce debate.

Here's the problem: None of these guys want their data looked at. CRU has this data because the scientists they work with and correspond with have been granted non-publication agreements. CRU gets a lot of its data from people with such agreements -- apparently the entire field is dominated by them; secrecy is the watchword in this particular branch of science, or alchemy, or divination, or whatever it really is -- and they have no desire nor motive to rat on themselves.

So CRU will pretend it's the good guy here -- hey, we want to disclose this stuff! -- but all the scientists with whom they have non-publication agreements will refuse to void those agreements. The data stays safely hidden, while CRU gets a bit of a PR boost.

Hey, the tried, right?

5 They will delay releasing data for as long as possible and hide behind having to get the owner of the data they have permission to release it.

So I guess if we had a REAL investigative journalist on the case they might ask inconvenient questions like having a look at the non-disclosure agreements signed (or not signed as the case may be).

China and India are all set to get on the AGW bandwagon - all the restrictions apply to "Developed Countries," and they're firmly attached to the notion of not being in that category.

When we move down to purely third-world countries, support is quite strong - because these are the countries that will be receiving payouts from the money left over after the graft.

On a serious note, IF they go open source with the data and programs, I would be more inclined to listen to them. Until then, I say they're frakkin' liers and I don't believe anything they come up with. If the Presnit insists on signing some 'agreement', if should (and will) be viewed as a scam as well.

15 I am going to repeat my idea of what global warming is to a 'typical liberal'.

The 'typical liberal' doesn't have religion in a classical sense. They don't 'believe' in a 'higher power' having an effect on their life.

Global warming now fills that void.

In the Dark Ages any calamity was blamed on the Devil. If your calf was stillborn, it was the Devil. Hard rain knocked down your wheat, the Devil. A family member sickens and dies, the Devil. Food is missing from the shed, Ace stole it.

Now global warming is blamed. Flood, fire, hurricane, earthquake, heck, even Philipino whores are because of global warming.

And I knew if I had my chance

And maybe they'd be paying for a while.

But November made me shiver
With every warming paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step

I can't remember if I cried

But something touched me deep inside
The day my junk science died

Got to get it back, and soon now
For tomorrow maybe you and me

What kind of fucking science uses "non-publication agreements" for gathering data? What the hell is the use of a "non-publication agreement" for a bunch of temperature records?

"Non-publication agreements" for peer reviewed studies, that effectively renders them completely useless since they can't actually be reviewed by their peers since all the data is under a "non-publication agreement"? Seriously?

I always used to wonder how they got good data from measurements taken 100 years ago.  "There's no way they can use that data to claim a temperature increase of 0.8C over the last century", I said to myself, picturing men with top hats and monocles squinting at olde-time thermometers and writing the closest number down.

Then I'd say "not to mention that the data wasn't being calibrated so that the guy in Russia and the guy in New York could compare their measurements in any meaningful way".

I'd say that, then I'd tell myself that They Must Know What They're Doing.  I'm just a guy with an Engineering degree.

90 I don't want to see the data so much as I want to see an audit: I want them to walk everybody through exactly how they arrived at their conclusions.

Of course they can't as their code is full of absurd hacks and kludges. But any other scientist halfway certain of his results would be happy (and proud) to share his methodology.

The Western governments are useless. Some sane country like China or India should demand all data, methodology and model source code to be disclosed before they will lift a finger about Global Warming. That should cool down this warmering idiocy.

It is because they are sane that they will not do a thing to upset this applecard.   They are conscious of the concept: don't interrupt your enemies while they are making mistakes.  And don't for a moment think that China does not consider everyone in the West as enemies.

And anyway, China and scientific integrity is hard to reconcile.  Remember the level of secrecy and non-disclosure during the avian flu panic?

108 Just like any good magician they are distracting us with a wand in their right hand and hoping we don't notice what the left is doing.  The "data" is only one of the issues - the issue with the data is it's poor management and lack of referable repository or index of the uses.  Just look at the one tree example; a data set was winnowed down to twelve trees - then one tree was used to bias the entire trend-line.

If something like this were discovered in a quality assurance audit of a nuclear power plant, that plant would be shut down.   I know, I was at Tennessee Valley Authority in the late 1980s.

The CRU has been audited, and they failed, very badly.  Everything done by these arrogant jerks and every conclusion derived from their work should be tossed.  The future is too important to be determined by sloppy work driven by financial interests.

But given the trillions of dollars and manipulations of entire governments, economies, industries and even civilizations that are riding on the AGW data, I suggest that either they release the goddamn data or every single law and regulation based on AGW should be nullified immediately.
