I have always liked the "peer review" meme from the scammers. The first hint of the fraud on this came years ago back when my blogging was at Townhall.  (I was a lurker here as well but no posts).

In any case someone linked to a site where one of those so-called peers wrote on the topic. He said that he had turned in many comments on the errors in the "hockey stick" graph. Most notably, the lack of coverage for the medieval warm period which made the graph appear to increase dramatically even before the "models" kicked in.

He said that they refused to incorporate his comment and also refused to remove his name from the list of "peer reviewers" when they would not accept his comment.

At that point it became obvious to me that the entire thing was intentional fraud instead of stupid errors.

What I would like to see is the EPA chief being grilled in a Senate hearing. Make her/him defend this data and produce the data they are basing their proposed regulations on.

A good followup would be to ask the head of the FDA about the emails and to suppose that these emails had been uncovered by a whistle blower at several major pharmaceutical firms. 

How would the FDA react?

 A; Some CEOs would be in jail.

Obama has done a "save face at all cost" decision. This house of cards is coming down with the speed of an avalanche once it starts to gain speed and mass. There were a lot of law makers who used the IPCC material to demand coal closure when in fact it was all fabricated.
I see a lot of law suits aimed at the Sierra Club now, and others for pressing legislation targeting industries and utility companies who were red flagged for closure due to misrepresented studies and clear and utter lies.

I have seen a lot of references here at AOS to this being a huge fraud based on the fact that "nothing" happened. Nothing major happened because big companies spent millions revamping their software AND hardware to remove Y2K bugs.

I know this because I was actually involved with some of this at my old company. I had to write a test program for some software that I used and was responsible for. This test program involved loading the software on a stand-alone computer and resetting the date to each of the Y2K related dates and running the software through each of its uses to determine if it was negatively impacted.

There were about 50 people on the team who were responsible for different items all over the company. As it turns out my software WAS impacted, but it was a minor impact on a function that I did not use.  This was not the case for all the hardware and software on site. We wound up having to actually replace hardware that had negative impacts physically wired into them.

The Y2K "scare" was not a fraud.

Yeah, the Y2K thing was pretty much a non-issue for me. I understand that businesses rely on computers much more that I do and must therefore take that much more seriously. When your payroll is computerized, it's important. IIRC, Microsoft put out a patch for it, which was the extent of my preparation for it.

Still, this whole climate change thing is becoming a pervasive annoyance. You can't watch a TV show without some overt or covert GW message. Schools are emphasizing it instead of core instruction and kids test scores and ability for critical thinking are suffering as a result. There's no way to get away from the subject unless you turn off the TV or radio, which, come to think of it, isn't a bad idea.

I hope that Climategate kills it for good. I know it'll take a while for the programming to wear off for the easily swayed. But this is a crisis for the left, one that we shouldn't waste.

Yes, a lot of time and money had to be spent to update old code, and minor glitches no doubt showed up.  However, the lights stayed on, airplanes didn't fall from the sky, bank accounts didn't get wiped out, and for the most part nothing happened.

I had a buddy working for the phone company doing datacom support.  It's a 24x7x365 operation, and everyone had to be at work on New Years Eve in case of major problems that never happened.

For Y2K disbelievers, my software engineering company was contracted by Florida Power & Light for site studies.  Every fuel transfer station's pumps, phone systems, software distribution panels, electronic valves, etc., were itemized, validated, and information returned to engineering office for status verification.

In my first year of Mech Engineering I was taught that in general, engineering is the economic application of science. There are other more elaborate definitions, but that's good enough.

Hell, I'm continuously sceptical of my own work. Sleep on it, recheck it and check it again. Then present it to peers, Mgr, VPs for potential better ideas, revisions, approval and funding.

When engineers are wrong bad things happen promptly: People are injured or die, pollution happens or as a minimum we just lose money.

A lot of that was done.  There was a certain amount of internal politics involved in many organizations as well.  It was seen by some as an opportunity to upgrade hardware (using a different budget rather than limited hardware budgets) even if it didn't require upgrading.

Prudential, for example, had a number of critical systems running on IBM PS/2 hardware, which had RTC issues where they wouldn't "roll over" correctly "automatically".  If however, you simply reset the data/time manually to 1JAN2000, then the RTC would maintain that and all would be well for the next 100 years or so.  The easy way out would have been to simply do the manual date reset on Jan 1 which IBM had certified as an acceptable workaround.

However...those PS/2 systems were hooked up to a (very reliable and robust) Token Ring LAN but the Ethernet Nazis were keen to see that all go away even though when it came to "hauling the freight" under combat conditions, I'd benchmarked the existing 4mpbs T/R being only slightly behind the new 100mpbs Ethernet they wanted.  A trivial config change to the 16-4 cards to switch them to 16mbps would have had the T/R at parity with the Ethernet -- which would have been politically unacceptable. [Lesson: stated "speed" numbers are often meaningless, you need to test a given LAN architecture under load to see what it can really do]

I didn't make a stink over it being a hired gun and it wasn't what I was there for anyway, it just happened that the machines I was working with were on the T/R and some on the Ethernet so I was in a position to draw comparisons.
