| East Anglia climate scientist: emails displayed "tribalism", IPCC may have "run its course"...The tribalism that some of the leaked emails display is something more usually associated with social organization within primitive cultures; it is not attractive when we find it at work inside science. [ed: monkeys flinging poo] It is also possible that the institutional innovation that has been the I.P.C.C. has run its course. Yes, there will be an AR5 but for what purpose? The I.P.C.C. itself, through its structural tendency to politicize climate change science, has perhaps helped to foster a more authoritarian and exclusive form of knowledge production CommentsPosted by: Al Gore's authoritay at November 27, 2009 07:58 PM (Oxen1) 2
I don't think that the leaked emails will matter one whit to the "true believers".

But this episode might signify something more in the unfolding story of climate change. This event might signal a crack that allows for processes of re-structuring scientific knowledge about climate change. It is possible that some areas of climate science has become sclerotic. It is possible that climate science has become too partisan, too centralized. Ya think???? Posted by: dagny at November 27, 2009 08:08 PM (usIpS) 13

Watch for Al Gore to start shedding investments. He turned $1million into $100million. It looks the clock is striking 12 and his $100million is about to tur back in to $1million unless he does something fast. I recall that Tipper was discovered to be quite a piece of work when she did her thing vis-a-vis entertainment and music standards back in the '80s. Phil Jones: There are ways of telling whether he is a witch.
Climate Scientist 1: Are there? Oh well, tell us. Phil Jones: Tell me. What do you do with witches? Climate Scientist 1: Burn them. Phil Jones: And what do you burn, apart from witches? Climate Scientist 1: More witches. Climate Scientist 2: Wood. Phil Jones: Good. Now, why do witches burn? Climate Scientist 3: ...because they're made of... wood? Phil Jones: Good. So how do you tell whether he is made of wood? Climate Scientist 1: Build a bridge out of her. Phil Jones: But can you not also build bridges out of stone? Climate Scientist 1: Oh yeah. Phil Jones: Does wood sink in water? Climate Scientist 1: No, no, it floats!... It floats! Throw her into the pond! Phil Jones: No, no. What else floats in water? Climate Scientist 1: Bread. Climate Scientist 2: Apples. Climate Scientist 3: Very small rocks. Climate Scientist 1: Cider. Climate Scientist 2: Gravy. Climate Scientist 3: Cherries. Climate Scientist 1: Mud. Climate Scientist 2: Churches. Climate Scientist 3: Lead! Lead! King Arthur: A Duck. Phil Jones: ...Exactly. So, logically... I would expect them to act the same way as a Christian or Jew would when someone questions their faith. That is the scary part. I've been mulling this over. Historically, religions aren't just disproved. They are normally replaced by a new religion either forcibly or as part of a social or government mandate. Here we have secularism as a religion with abortion as a sacrament. The primary doctrine is that Gaia is in danger and needs humans to sacrifice (their progress) to make her whole again. The religion of secularism with the U.S. as demon isn't really endangered. It will be interesting to see what new reason they come up with to require the humans to sacrifice. They make the Aztecs seem civil, really. Posted by: dagny at November 27, 2009 08:31 PM (ZoVvv) 50

We are just lucky that most of them are dumber than a box of rocks. If leftists had any brains, they would have subjugated all of us and destroyed humankind long ago. As it is, now, the only thing that ever stops the left is their sheer and unmitigated stupidity, and they don't even get stopped until after they've done tons and tons of damage. 29 ClimateGate prompted me to go back and re-read this Michael Crichton speech on environmentalism as a religion.
He couldn't have been more right. It's a shame he didn't live to see this scam begin to unravel. Posted by: Andy at November 27, 2009 08:18 PM (VMyjP) Just in case anyone missed it, a British court just ruled, less than a month ago, that Anthropogenic Catastrophic Global Warming idiocy constitute a religion for the purposes of employment: Climate change belief given same legal status as religion An executive has won the right to sue his employer on the basis that he was unfairly dismissed for his green views after a judge ruled that environmentalism had the same weight in law as religious and philosophical beliefs. Now, I don't place any importance in the rulings of courts (which have demonstrated more of a schizophrenic break with reality and lack of intelligent reasoning than just about any other group - save climate pseudo-scientists) but this was funny, anyway. The moral of the story is that leftists can lose both sides of the argument at the same time. Posted by: progressoverpeace at November 27, 2009 08:58 PM (A46hP) 95

At this point the "Greens" have blessed us with the DDT scandal, the bromide scandal, the Acid Rain debacle, the recycling industry, the Ozone Hole BS, (am I missing any), and this Global Warming conspiracy. This "science" has cost us hundreds of millions of dead from malaria, increased production costs across a wide swath of the economy, and billions in misspent research dollars.
When do they (the environmentalists) have to start answering the hard questions, specifically what is economic impact of there proposals and how does their science scale to the real environment of googolplex size. If we can't introduce science into the FAA systems without four nines of confidence, field a new pair of socks to soldiers without two years of ATEC testing, or administer a drop of a desperately needed drug without years of testing -- what are we doing implementing economy crippling environmental regulations without comparable review. Every year or so I end up coming back to Anne Douglas' "The Feminization of American Culture." When she wrote it, she didn't know she agreed with us. It gives an excellent account of how the clergymen who were put out of comfortable state incomes by the Disestablishment movement in the generation after the Revolution ended up forming all of American "Victorianism," and most of what is the liberal establishment today. It's a good case study of what things might look like at The Goremitage about now. It sets dangerous precedent politically, but this come-uppance calls for much more inquiry than the usual subcommittee hearing. To keep the serpents' heads from re-emerging, there would have to be a worldwide scrubdown similar to the war crimes trials--the real ones, after WWII. With the Current Party in Power you won't get that, but it would be worth changing Current Parties for. At a bare minimum, I'd like to see some advanced degrees revoked, the UN's role eliminated, and some ass-kicking costs-and-damages claims in court. We're talking trillions here already, not even counting Dagny's light bulbs and our pride. Posted by: comatus at November 27, 2009 09:03 PM (/VEEI) 101

The main stream media continue to hide this exposure of the hoax and the majority of Americans and the world have not been told of these charlatans.
For example in Trinidad in the Caribbean just today there is an ongoing meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government which is being attended by countries like those in the Caribbean plus the UK, India, Australia, Uganda, etc. The President of France and the UK Prime Minister is attending and possibly also Harper from Canada. While there they are saying that the meeting aside from regular business is a PREAMBLE to Copenhagen.
Well here is how they are covering up the climate hoax as if it is not happening and I quote from an article from the BBC which is one of the socialist UK government funded aiders and abettors of the farce that is climate change:
"UK PM Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have proposed a multi-billion-dollar fund to help developing nations deal with climate change. Mr Brown said the $10bn (£6bn) fund should also be used to help developing nations cut greenhouse gas emissions. Both spoke at the Commonwealth summit in Trinidad, the last major world forum before the global summit on climate change in Copenhagen on 7 December. Many Commonwealth members are island states threatened by rising sea levels. Mr Sarkozy, with UN chief Ban Ki-moon and Danish Prime Minister Prime Lars Loekke Rasmussen, is there to give weight to any climate change statement. The topic is the only issue on the Commonwealth summit's agenda for the first day. "
So as far as they are concerned - nothing has changed and they will continue this socialist attempt to control more and more of our lives. Posted by: joseph at November 27, 2009 09:12 PM (d566u) 116

If it makes economic sense, I'll buy green stuff. I switched my crib to CFL's years ago and knocked many hundreds of bucks off the power bill with them over the years. They do pay for themselves. The CFL floods up on the gable (which need a ladder and are a hassle to change) have been in service for over 6 years now. Incandescent floods would have required changing a couple of times a year as well as sucking a lot more power. When dawn/dusk electric eye switches fail, its usually at higher current loads. Take'em much over 300W and they start to get into a short lifespan zone, no matter what their claimed wattage rating is. My dawn/dusk eyes have been in place since around 2003 with out failure. When does ClimateGate really break out? I was forced to bring up this
topic at Thanksgiving yesterday with my nice, uberlib bro-in-law, and
all he could say was "I trust the many scientists who believe in
climate change." Finally, I said, "you'll see, very soon, Al Gore will
be seen as the new Joe McCarthy.
Uh, who are these "many scientists," and when do they start deserting the climate change ship? Posted by: ParisParamus at November 27, 2009 10:31 PM (zL+qc) 186
"The tribalism that some of the leaked emails display is something more usually associated with social organization within primitive cultures"
This is junk. Information locality is a property of our reality starting from at least the level of quantum information exchange. Tribalism can not be eliminated. "The I.P.C.C. itself, through its structural tendency to politicize climate change science, has perhaps helped to foster a more authoritarian and exclusive form of knowledge production" This is correct, and the guy deserves credit for saying it. That's a great article and he does a terrific job. Sadly, he'll probably be excoriated as a heretic, because the guys who are behind this are extremists who will brook no questioning. Unlike the fruitcakes such as Mann, he seems genuinely interested in doing good science.

In this context, tribalism isn't only about shunning the outsider. It's about the reflexive impulse to destroy the outsider to preserve the honor of the tribe. It's exactly the same type of dynamic that is at work in Afghanistan or the Rwandan-Congolese border.
The good thing is that this dynamic can be turned against the evil tribe members, when it becomes obvious that their claim on the tribe's loyalty and honor is actually harmful to the tribe's survival. Maybe the scientist calling for the IPCC to expire is the first sign of an East Anglia Awakening. Posted by: stuiec at November 27, 2009 10:36 PM (Ate22) 189

See, I think they knew they were making the trade and sent her out to trash Fox to see if it would work. Then if they got shit for it, it was just from a soon to be ex-employee, if the exhiling of Fox was accepted, then they could just keep it up. The networks didn't go for it as far as the WH briefings were concerned but the cherry on the sundae for us was Anita's Mao loving speech. I acutually wished a long-timer would have said it and would have been fired because we were getting her replaced anyway.

Lesson 1: Don't let users put passwords in their signatures. Yep, you got that right: One of the scientists included both on his e-mail signature — which means that anyone receiving an e-mail from this guy had access to his files. This may have been the source of the hack; in fact, some folks have theorized that a recipient of the e-mail was the source of the data dump. Posted by: Neo at November 28, 2009 01:15 AM (tE8FB) 218

I can not say what happens at most Universities, but I found that many proffesours, when they are back from their vacations research trips around the world at students expense, they maybe only teach 1/2 or 2/3 of the classes because they have kids working for their masters giving the rest of the classes. It is tough to work so hard in the colleges when you have to leave your latte and capacino meetings with friends co-worksers to teach class.

Re 56: You are quite right, the best way to show up these Green hacks is to get the messages out to the general public ASAP. No matter what the academic and political elites may think or their Lamestream Media mouthpiece allies, the public at large won't stand for being lied to. Especially when they are being asked to change their own lives, and pay taxes to "make the world a better place". Change the political climate, and these global warmers will drift back to the fringe where they belong.
For my own part, Dr. Hulme seems to be soberly suggesting some effective damage control on his side of the argument, even if the rest of his piece makes me uneasy about his political and scientific philosophy. Dr. Curry is a true scientist, and she is the sort of person who ought to be fielding our skeptical questions, instead of those "oops we lost the data" quacks. The ones who are responding to criticism by manipulating data or trying to silence the opposition are doing more harm than good to their cause. Why do the "STFU" people always think stifling debate is going to lead to a win, instead of provoking a walkout or more strenuous opposition?
