Anti-prosperity "Progressive" Governance in New York

It leads to a California-style budget disaster:

Without a budget deal, New York will be left with just $36 million in the bank by the end of December, according to current projections. And the money will last that long, officials say, only if the state chooses to fully exhaust its emergency reserves by tapping several billion dollars’ worth of temporary loans from its rainy-day fund and short-term investments.

For weeks, Gov. David A. Paterson has invoked the shrinking amount of available cash in an effort to provoke the Legislature to deal with the state’s $3.2 billion budget deficit. So far, the specter of such dire fiscal outcomes has been greeted with what amount to legislative shrugs, chiefly in the recalcitrant State Senate.

The NYTimes author fatuously suggests that "New York is by no means California" before going on to describe New York's dropping credit rating, projected inability to make payments, education cuts, and tax hikes.

Uh huh. Not like California at all. By no means. Keep tellin' yourself that.

3 They keep shrugging because this is all part of the Democrat playbook.

Tax increases only become politically palatable when all the existing money has been spent and now we have billion and trillion-dollar deficits.

They spend to excess in order to generate the political will for tax increases.

All part of the plan.

Well yeah, they don't have a RINO as governor to blame everything on, this is a completely democrat-owned mess.

6 Republicans = Cut tax rates to raise tax revenues. Then, spend those newrevenues.

Democrats = Spend Now. Create deficits. Tax to pay off the bill.

Only the strategy differentiates the two parties, but both are after the same thing - more and more tax dollars.

There is no way for us to function with folks in power who have no idea of how our economy works. As fantasical as it sounds, wealth can be created from literally nothing but a great idea and some determination. Wealth is not a zero-sum game, where one man's gain is literally anothers' loss. It just doesn't work that way, but that doesn't stop "progressives" from thinking it does, up to and including The Vapid One©.

Free markets only work when they are allowed to operate unfettered by senseless rules and regulations. We've regulated ourselves out of business by voting in people who've never held a position in a real-world job, never had to meet a payroll, or understand that their employees livlihoods depend on them making sound decisions.

When this attitude changes, we'll start to see states return to sovency and logical fiscal policies instead of whining that they're out of money and don't know why.

Couple this problem with the weak horse in the White House leading our military and our CIA into the courtroom slaughter house and well, you have master disaster in the making.

For the years following 9/11/2001 NYC enjoyed the life of secured luxury because a strong horse was in the White House; now there is a weak horse and just as with John Bolton, there is no way hell I am sticking around this town.

41 Further; if I worked in the CIA, the FBI or served in the military under a weak horse president who will sacrifice me and my family to the PC alter I would not stick my neck out to protect others.

Why put yourself on the line if your President or your Mayor punishes you for sticking your life on the line.

Was not the main reason why NYC crime was so high prior to Giuliani's tenure because police-officers stopped doing their jobs, started looking away, since to do their job meant facing the devastation of being sacrificed on the PC alter by previous mayors?

46 Although it is common in politics and the media to refer to government's "raising taxes" or "cutting taxes," this terminology blurs a crucial distinction between tax rates and tax revenues.  The government can change tax rates but the reaction of the public to these changes can result in either a higher or a lower amount of tax revenues being collected, depending on circumstances and responses.  Thus references to proposals for a "$500 billion tax cut" or a "$700 billion tax increase" are wholly misleading because all that the government can enact is a change in tax rates, whose actual consequences can be determined only after the fact.

... the growing federal deficits of the 1980's in the United States have often been blamed on the "tax cuts" early in that decade.  But, although tax rates per dollar of income were cut, the total tax revenues of the federal government were higher in every year of the 1980's than in any previous year in the history of the country, as a result of incomes growing by more than the tax rates were cut.  It was increased spending which led to growing defecits--a fact concealed by sloppy use of the word "taxes," which can refer to either individual tax rates or the total tax revenues of the government.

Posted by: Stuff Thomas Sowell said at November 27, 2009 02:26 PM (aVzyR)

Why in the f*ck can't conservatives simply make the point, over and over and over again:  big government liberalism DOESN'T WORK.

Come to my state - it used to be the industrial "heart" of the United States; it has phenomenal natural resources (see the UP); it has some of the most beautiful shoreline in the world (see the West Coast of Michigan); it is an outdoorsman's paradise (hunting, fishing, hiking, etc.); still, the great state of Michigan is a f**king disaster.

Big government, unions, corrupt city officials (see Saginaw, Flint, Detroit, etc.), racial demagogues, and liberal "elites" (See Ann Arbor) have combined to turn this incredible state into a total and complete sh*thole.

This exact point was put to the Indonesian imbecile in one of the primary debates, regarding the fact that his intent to raise capital gains taxes would likely result in reduced receipts to the government.  The idiot from Indonesia replied that he would raise the taxes anyway, as it was a matter of "fairness".  This was the clearest indication that anyone needed that The Precedent didn't care about redistribution, at all, but had his guns set on nothing but bringing pain and suffering to the successful - "economic justice".

For The Precedent (and many of the left) it's not about redistribution, but merely about revenge.  It's a shame that much of America is too stupid to understand this.  Maybe they'll start figuring it out when they start fainting from all of the blood that is pouring out of their asses - rich and poor alike ...

67 this is why property taxes are the most insidious.  Property can't leave.

Ah, but the owner CAN abandon it when it no longer pays to own it, then the government winds up with dramatically reduced property valuation when the joint is sold at a tax auction.

I abandoned two pieces of real estate in upstate NY over the past 10 years because it simply made no economic sense to continue paying the taxes on property that couldn't make any money and was actively losing money each year.

The towns were unwilling to budge on valuation, and that scared any potential buyers away.  The properties were located in areas where rental income was insufficient to cover constant tenant damage, perform routine maintenance, and replace a constant parade of stolen appliances every time a tenant did a midnight moveout.

Out of sheer human kindness, however, I'll give them, free of charge, the solution to their problems. It's very simple.

CUTS!  CUTS! CUTS! CUTS! CUTS! CUTS! CUTS! CUTS! CUTS!

Maybe, just maybe, if they'll do that there won't be so many people bailing from their states that actually, you know, contribute something instead of sponging off the public fisc.

71 Apparently Wall Street bonuses are back this Christmas, so the city expects tax receipts to blip up for the quarter. Of course, they're planning to spend the windfall instead of reserve it against next quarter's collapse.

Then again, the financial geniuses collecting the bonuses are spending like crazy on big-ticket luxury items, because there's no chance of their firms imploding or laying off another round of imbeciles.

75 Actually, there are two New Yorks.  The city, which pretty much runs things, and the rest of the state, which the city has pretty much destroyed since the Rockefeller days.

First, they drove out manufacturing, because Wall Street was all they needed.

Then they gave us our own version of healthcare reform, by mandating what health insurance could be sold in the state, and lavishly funding medicaid, because the rest of you were paying for three quarters of it and they made the counties pick up the tab for the rest out of our highest-in-the-nation property taxes.

It sucks to be you, and it sucks to be us.  We aren't California - we have snow, and too few people left to have traffic jams.

I'm in Arizona, that state to the east of California.
A quick history of Arizona politics.
The default governorship from date of state inception has been toward progressiveness. It started with a governor who wanted to educate women, have small business thrive, etc. etc.
Now at 100 years later, we gave the nation Janet Napolitano, the woman in man's pants, to Homeland security. The one thing I'm grateful to Obama for - taking her out of this state.
The reason she got elected is because starting back after Goldwater's libertarian/republican/strong defense run for president, the state went into Babbit - ville for governor and then, like an unbalanced laundry load, swiveled from Ev Meacham (r) (who, before Pope John Paul II arrived at sky harbor famously asked "does he speak english?") who was IMPEACHED by the deciding vote of a female black legislator who said she was proud to get that white guy out, and then she was found guilty of bribery to the tune of taking stacks of cash on her coffee table and having the temerity to ask for more. We then got the Keating 5 that ensnarled McCain who if not catholic, should be considering the guilt that he will harbor and try to expunge through mea culpa legislation.

After Meacham, we got Rose Mofford, the democrat secretary of state, who took over after impeachment and was fond of thinking that lasers were pointed at her to spy on her. Nice lady, a little batty in the belfry.

Then came Fife Symington (r) who was called "three sticks" because he was "Fife Symington III". Did a few things before taking office such as: bought a prime piece of land in the middle or "uptown" area of phoenix, built the Ritz Carlton and Esplanade development, then inflated the value of those holdings on loan applications to get more land located downtown where he build the Mercado development.

Phoenix has always been a boom/bust city so the real estate took a header and when he couldn't pay the loans everything came out in court. Problem was: HE WAS GOVERNOR now, not a developer. But, the democrat attorney general filed charges, he was drummed out of office, got convicted by a jury of idiots, was out on bond pending appeal of jury tampering, then had his slate wiped clean by President Clinton who issued a pardon. Fife went to cooking school, everyone made fun of how he married his wife only for her family's money, but they stayed together and he opened a restaurant.

Since he was drummed out of office early, the secretary of state - Jane Hull (r) - of the red hair - was sworn in as governor. She lasted until Janet Napolitano (d) of the undetermined sex was elected.
Janet (no last name on the election signs. she felt she was like cher), left early and was replaced by the secretary of state Jan Brewer (r) who is in a standoff right now with the majority controlled republican legislature.

So, against this backdrop of having the testicular fortitude of knowing truth from fiction and really throwing the bums out when they were bums, something happened in the 1990s.

Rodney King.
All those race riots in California spawned an exodus from LA to Phoenix. Since most of the governors who served since the state was formed were democrats, it shouldn't have made a difference, but IT DID.

The first wave of transplants, wanted Arizona to become like Calfornia and they figured that to make no 'rodney king' incidents, they would go out of their way to become PC to the nth degree.

They made changes to labor laws, to police tactics, etc. etc. to make sure nothing like rodney king would happen again.

Too bad this mucked everything up. During the 90s the real estate market stabilized with so many coming in from California, but taxes went up because they demanded, through voting in democrats always willing to be more vitriolic each election cycle, more and more and more - mainly for the schools.

Then came the latest round of migration in the 2000-2003 years. The writing was on the wall and anyone who could get out, did. Where did they go? Oregon, Nevada, Colorado, and yes, Arizona.
But this time, there was some segregation: The rich liberals went to Oregon and Colorado telling everyone to plant a tree, keep the skies clean since LA was such a smog pit, etc., but  the poor democrats came to Arizona and Nevada and took jobs that paid less than what they were used to in California. This changed the make up of politics because the bums, who we would throw out and vote out, were now scene as how business was usually done.

That led us to Janet. First off, let me say that the republicans in this state are unorganized, neutered by the press, and when they stand up against illegal immigration that had 1 judge down in Tucson fining the state $5million dollars because he didn't like the republican legislature's per child expenditures for english as a second language (which happened to be $3500 per child for extra english immersion classes), they get walloped.

CLUE for republicans from ground zero of the entitled skin color game: You won't win. Each group hears what they want to and any time you have a republican say: no more money for bilingual education since the judge forced us to spend $5k per child to get the daily fines that were breaking the bank, off our backs, all those bilingual children's parents think: those white guys don't want to pay for my child's education. NUTS! COMPLETELY NUTS! But when you are dealing with entrenched interests and their foot soldiers - the workers who don't have time or the education to understand what's going on, but do understand that they should just vote Democrat - you get the fix Arizona is in right now:

The republican controlled legislature had been hanging firm on cutting the budget: education and state assistance programs. Since the state doesn't do much else, these items are huge.

The governor - a republican - wants a 1 cent sales tax increase to 9%+ to cover the cuts.

They adjourned without a budget and we're now $4billion in the hole. Thanks Janet - really - because if it wasn't for your ponzi/madoff schemes of selling state assets at inflated prices and then having the real estate bubble crash, thus putting those who purchased state properties in bankruptcy, we could have slowed the growth of these entitlement programs, which by the way, are mainly unfunded federal mandates. DO YOU THINK JANET COULD MAYBE CALL ONE OF HER DEMOCRATIC BUDDIES AND GET SOME MORE FED MONEY TO the state she wants to come back to now and run for senator against either McCain or Kyl (both republicans).

So, now there's a branch of the republicans that want to work with the democrats and hammer out a budget that won't (and I quote) "gut education and healthcare". Now a special session has been called to address the budget shortfall and with republicans signaling a willingness to compromise - spend more and tax more - we're going to be in even deeper trouble.

It would be very different if those that left California in 2006/2007/2008 didn't just end up here because they ran out of gas and thus became 'citizens' of the state of Arizona, thus clogging the lines at the various help agencies and adding to our state's woes. Could they please leave their cars at the border near Blythe CA and just stay in California. You made you crap hole of a state the way it is and now, like roaches, you're invading mine.............again.

Sign me - NOT TOO HAPPY.

From the old ska/punk song - Merry Robbin' Hood:

Well I rob from the rich

And I give to the poor

Then the poor become rich

And I rob some more

The number one rule of business

Is to keep the gold for me.

If it takes that long.   Hell, upstate NY was Detroit 20 years before Detroit saw it coming.   Not that NY got off the tracks when they saw the lights of the train.

You've got the same combination of Public Sector Unions, Public Sector Left Wing Special Interests, and the pols they elect, all of whom have their hand in the till and won't take it out until they have bankrupted everything  to include credit.
