Happy Thanksgiving + Football Today

NFL games today so don't forget to make your picks. Green Bay and Detroit first up today, the Oakland and Dallas. Oh yeah, Huckleberry reminded me there's a game tonight on the NFL network, Giant and Broncos.

Remember if you don't think too good, don't think too long. I plan to make my picks for this week in about 37 seconds. For some reason a half a minute feels strangely familiar to me, like an old friend.

Texas and Texas A&M tonight at 8 EST.

Travel safely, eat good stuff, try to stay out of trouble you goofballs.

UPDATE: Several morons adding their thoughts on thankfulness in the comments. Good idea. Me, I'm enjoying the day with my kids, also thinking about those who are deployed and away from those they love. God keep them safe. Also those who, for various reasons, this time of year can be difficult.

12 happy turkey day!

i am thankful for what freedom i have left.

the Puritans left England to escape state endorsed religion, they went to Holland where things weren't much better so they decided to come to the New World where there were no authorities to tell them how to live. They drew up a charter, they thought that the "fairest" way to live was to hold all property and assets in common, every member of the group recieving an "equal" share. They came here and they starved, half of them died the first winter. William Bradford, the leader of the colony, saw that the practice of holding everything in common created an environment that discouraged the most willing and able from working as hard as they could because no matter how hard they worked they still only got as much as the least willing and able, Plymouth was on the verge of collapse until they struck down the old charter and created a new one where each member of the colony was given their own individual plot of land from which they kept the friuts of their own labor... and America was born!

the first Thanksgiving was NOT a celebration of "diversity" it was a day of giving thanks to God for all things that had been learned by them and given to them.

I am thankful for four walls and a roof.  I am thankful for a fridge, oven and smoker full of food, and a family willing to travel to eat said food.

I am thankful to have been born in the USA (still the last great hope for freedom and democracy in the world), at a time of relative peace and prosperity.  I am thankful that the political process continues, and hasn't been exhausted.  I am thankful for what we don't have here in America, which is famine, pestilence, and war.

I am thankful that we still have a generation of men and women willing to "sign the blank check" and serve our country.  It's tough enough to make that commitment and sacrifice in peacetime, even tougher now.

I am also thankful for AOS morons, cheerleaders, football, teh intertubes, boobies, beer.......

1. The AGW data looking more and more fraudulent by the hour
2a. The census worker's death ruled a suicide, and not murder by a crazed right wing death cult.
2b. Andrew Sullivan and LGF hardest hit.
3. Andrew Breitbart playing ACORN like a Stradivarius.
4. Democrats cratering in the polls.
5. Sarah Palin and her book tour driving the left even more batshit crazy
6. Obama looking more and more like an empty suit, even to his allies
7. The far left at war with each other over Barry's sending more troops to Afghanistan.

These more or less compensate for me being funemployed since last May. I can soothe my ego by dipping my balls in lefty schadenfreude and flop sweat.

Wife said breast down is the best way to do a bird and I'm not one to argue.

That's true, although if you'd like nice browned skin you might want to try to flip it over for the last 30-60 minutes.

True story.  The first year we were married, I cooked a turkey (my first) upside down.  I'd like to say that I planned it that way, but it was just that I was an ignorant newlywed.  I discovered what I'd done only after my husband went to carve the bird and got little/no meat off of the "breast."  Even then, at first I thought I'd inadvertently bought an "all dark meat" turkey (there is no such thing), until I realized the legs were pointing the wrong way!

We had our turkey yesterday: 750 cal, 19 gm fat, 94 carbs.
We found out Mr. Y-not is pre-diabetic, so I had to adjust my recipes, but we still did ok for the day.

I am thankful for having a hubby worth counting fat and carbs for...
and also for AoSHQ, an island of sanity in a sea of liberalism.

62 From the Wall Street Journal, an editorial they have run each year for almost 50 years now:

...And the Fair Land.

Any one whose labors take him into the far reaches of the country, as ours lately have done, is bound to mark how the years have made the land grow fruitful.

This is indeed a big country, a rich country, in a way no array of figures can measure and so in a way past belief of those who have not seen it. Even those who journey through its Northeastern complex, into the Southern lands, across the central plains and to its Western slopes can only glimpse a measure of the bounty of America.

And a traveler cannot but be struck on his journey by the thought that this country, one day, can be even greater. America, though many know it not, is one of the great underdeveloped countries of the world; what it reaches for exceeds by far what it has grasped.

So the visitor returns thankful for much of what he has seen, and, in spite of everything, an optimist about what his country might be. Yet the visitor, if he is to make an honest report, must also note the air of unease that hangs everywhere.

For the traveler, as travelers have been always, is as much questioned as questioning. And for all the abundance he sees, he finds the questions put to him ask where men may repair for succor from the troubles that beset them.

His countrymen cannot forget the savage face of war. Too often they have been asked to fight in strange and distant places, for no clear purpose they could see and for no accomplishment they can measure. Their spirits are not quieted by the thought that the good and pleasant bounty that surrounds them can be destroyed in an instant by a single bomb. Yet they find no escape, for their survival and comfort now depend on unpredictable strangers in far-off corners of the globe.

How can they turn from melancholy when at home they see young arrayed against old, black against white, neighbor against neighbor, so that they stand in peril of social discord. Or not despair when they see that the cities and countryside are in need of repair, yet find themselves threatened by scarcities of the resources that sustain their way of life. Or when, in the face of these challenges, they turn for leadership to men in high places—only to find those men as frail as any others.

So sometimes the traveler is asked whence will come their succor. What is to preserve their abundance, or even their civility? How can they pass on to their children a nation as strong and free as the one they inherited from their forefathers? How is their country to endure these cruel storms that beset it from without and from within?

Of course the stranger cannot quiet their spirits. For it is true that everywhere men turn their eyes today much of the world has a truly wild and savage hue. No man, if he be truthful, can say that the specter of war is banished. Nor can he say that when men or communities are put upon their own resources they are sure of solace; nor be sure that men of diverse kinds and diverse views can live peaceably together in a time of troubles.

But we can all remind ourselves that the richness of this country was not born in the resources of the earth, though they be plentiful, but in the men that took its measure. For that reminder is everywhere—in the cities, towns, farms, roads, factories, homes, hospitals, schools that spread everywhere over that wilderness.

We can remind ourselves that for all our social discord we yet remain the longest enduring society of free men governing themselves without benefit of kings or dictators. Being so, we are the marvel and the mystery of the world, for that enduring liberty is no less a blessing than the abundance of the earth.

And we might remind ourselves also, that if those men setting out from Delftshaven had been daunted by the troubles they saw around them, then we could not this autumn be thankful for a fair land.

**************

A half century since this editorial was first published, and yet how The More Things Change, The More They Remain the Same!

Let me make a personal point here, as a first generation immigrant that arrived on these shores at the old Internation Arrivals Building at JFK in New York way back in 1969 as the 6 year old son of Czech refugees from Communism. My parents had exactly $23 in their pocket and two suitcases full of clothing as their only possessions in the whole world. Within 4 years they owned their own home, and lived to see me go graduate college, serve in the US Army, and begin my own family as a free American.

I once read some jerk post in Lefty Blog that immigrants are too "just got off the boat and so happy to be here." As though that were a bad thing. Better to be, in their estimation, cynical, ashamed to be an American, critical of her and what she means all over the world. I pity Leftists for their blindness, and their inane self-loathing.

God Bless America, and Happy Thanksgiving One and All!
