| Of Course: ClimateGate File Was Leaked to BBC In October... And Of Course They Failed to Report Their ScoopThere's an Elvis Costello song, "Hand in Hand," which, like many of his songs, seems superficially sweet, but is dark. I won't ask you to apologizeYou don't have to forgive me But if I'm gonna go dow-ow-own You're gonna come with me Hand in Hand Hand in Hand Hand in Hand... I've cut out some lyrics there. You get the point. Everytime the left gets blowed up, there's the media, jumping on the grenade, killing themselves while failing to save any of their comrades. The controversy surrounding the global warming scandal today deepened after a BBC correspondent admitted he was sent the leaked emails more than a month before they were made public. Paul Hudson, weather presenter and climate change expert, claims the documents allegedly sent between some of the world's leading scientists are of a direct result of an article he wrote. In his BBC blog two days ago, Hudson said: 'I was forwarded the chain of emails on the 12th October, which are comments from some of the world's leading climate scientists written as a direct result of my article "Whatever Happened To Global Warming".' That essay, written last month, argued that for the last 11 years there had not been an increase in global temperatures. So he got the attention of the leaker, figuring he was an honest broker in the debate. (There is no debate; the science is settled -- Added by MinTruth.) But he did nothing with him. This doesn't mean that this particular presenter is to blame-- but someone in the BBC quashed the story, obviously. ... The emails apparently show researchers discussing how to 'spin' climate data and how that information should be presented to the media. My guess is that the explanation concerns the forbiddence of his superiors, and if he says that, he'll be out of a job. ...but added: 'I do intend to write a blog regarding the CRU being hacked into, and the possible implications of this very serious affair.' Former Chancellor Lord Lawson has called for an inquiry into the scandal, warning the credibility of UK science is at stake. It comes amid pressure on the professor at the centre of the scandal to quit from his position at the CRU.George Monbiot, who previously said there was no point "pretending" these emails weren't deadly damaging, is calling for Phil Jones to quit. And Monbiot is a "leading environmentalist" writing chiefly on "green issues." I am now convinced that they are genuine, and I'm dismayed and deeply shaken,' he said. 'There are some messages that require no spin to make them look bad. 'There appears to be evidence of attempts to prevent scientific data from being released, and even to destroy material that was subject to a Freedom of Information request. 'Worse still, some of the emails suggest efforts to prevent the publication of work by climate sceptics, or to keep it out of a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. How about analyzed for the first time? Thanks to Lance. Comments1

Happy Thanksgiving, fellow morons.
I'm half in the bag, fighting off a cold, and --- dammit --- I'm going to wake up tomorrow safe in the knowledge that there won't be a glacier at my door step, or warm salty polar ice cap melt, or a polar bear come the dawn. but mostly that there won't be a polar bear. It'd be too gamey to serve with the wine I bought. Happy T-day. Posted by: BumperStickerist at November 25, 2009 08:40 PM (ruzrP) 5

Whereas the BBC is publicly funded and therefore enormously resistant to the pressures of the real world, the rest of the media in Britain and in the USA are a bit more sensitive to market forces. At some point, they will have to make the conscious choice between continuing to serve as the propaganda organ of the Left -- thus losing all credibility and a critical mass of readers/viewers/listeners -- or rediscovering the notion of journalistic integrity and truth-telling, which is the only way they can salvage their commercial viability in the long run.

There's an Elvis Costello song, "Hand in Hand"...
Good heavens, I just downloaded This Year's Model earlier this week and I got to hear "Hand in Hand" for the first time in nearly 20 years. Coincidence? I think not! Costello was an interesting alternative to the arty, pretentious 1970s "progressive" rock with long, drawn out 15-20 minute long pieces that frequently took up a whole side of a vinyl record. In contrast, Costello wrote short, punchy pop tunes with a lot of bite. Posted by: OregonMuse at November 25, 2009 08:58 PM (hoowK) 24

It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite. My guess is that the BBC reporter only received a small portion of emails - not the giant dump of emails that was leaked to the web recently.
Or, he just received one forwarded email, which contained a series of back and forth replies on a single topic in which he was mentioned. Perhaps the leaker was testing if the journalist was interested in taking the ball and running with the files. In which case - EPIC FAIL - the journalist lost the scoop of his career. I saw the BBC guy's own blog post several days ago. He just confirmed that one or more emails he saw in the zip file was a match for the same email(s) in his own files. (Steve McIntyre did the same thing, and I am sure others did the same -- maybe even that apologist Revkin, the Somewhat Predictable.) http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/paulhudson/ It's OK to despise the Beeb about AGW, cuz they are a major part of this cosmic fuck up, but at least get the freakin' stories straight. Hudson is not Black, both work at the Beeb. One was Mann's personal toady. The other, not so much. There were emails from November in the zip. Check w/ McIntyre's post on when his last FOI rejection letter was dated (the day after the last emails in the zip) and everything gets a lot more clear. And of course since you're an arrogant snob you get to fight with dissenters with a particular sense of superiority of the kind irresistible to ivory-tower climbers. But the deal gets even better. We've pretty much gone through your typical leftie professor's wet dream, but are we done? Oh no. You're silly. You, Mr. Global Warmist Professor, you also get to tell the government what to do. And the government will try to do it! The distinctive elitism of the laboratory, calling the shots by proxy. What academic wouldn't sign on to this deal? What academic wouldn't do everything possible in their expertise to make it seem true? And if you think about the ancillaries, media and political gulping of the global warmist story in one-and-a-quarter bites isn't hard to figure out either. Money money money! Everyone gets money but you and me. The special people get the money. The ones who are better than us. They know what's best. Global warmist scheme = money grab. Fun time! To explain in more detail and bore, politicians will invest their money in various enterprises tailored to government perks for "green" business, get sweetheart deals on "green" properties and such, like Dodd and others did with Countrywide. Scientists on the warmist train will join hands with the "green" industries to develop their products and regulate carbon emissions at lucrative salaries, in the same way some scientists work today for private corporations, some selectively criticized by the left. Of course we must continue monitoring earth's climate with much fieldwork and analysis paid for by taxpayers that will undoubtedly be very comfortable to scientists' pocketbooks. Saving the earth from humans on the taxpayer's money is a big job don't you know. There's way more than global warming after all.
It's so ludicrous that such a thing could come to pass that everyone is going through the motions now, except the true believers and the pundits (especially the true believers among the pundits). Everyone knows that the Indians and the Reds aren't going to sign up for jack that harms their ability to make money, and the Americans aren't either, no matter what the president and the ruling party thinks. But in the meantime appearances must be kept because fanatics just don't go away otherwise they'd be something less annoying. The warmists will continue to throw up lots of hot air and much money will be spent on conferences and such but the failure of any legally binding climate deal (never gonna happen, never never ever ever, making money has been king since money existed, every system except capitalism is a rigged game for certain people to make money, including communism) means that the socialist green utopia of tomorrow is about as likely as marijuana being legalized any time soon (to a pothead's point of view). Very unfortunate on both. Or maybe just one. Posted by: chaos at November 25, 2009 10:41 PM (mFUln) 94

If a researcher accepts money from the gas or coal industry, the msm quickly labels them as a bought and paid for corporate whore, and their work is ignored. However, if a researcher accepts money from corporations with ties to forms of renewable energy or from governments who are looking for a rationale for huge tax hikes and for more control of its citizen's lives, the msn labels them as a world expert. I hope all these "experts" will soon be doing a perp walk led by The Goreacle.

Consider the larger flow chart of the process: You are given large amounts of grant money by lefty politicians to provide the pretext for those same politicians to grab vast amounts of money and power, which would be funneled to wealthy parties like GE or the Sierra Club or credits traders, who would then put money in the coffers of those same corrupt politicians. These sainted 'scientists' were guns for hire, lining their pockets, gaining prestige, and building the lie to take all our freedoms and wealth. I think heat island effect is undervalued. A few years ago when I was doing some electrical work for South Florida water management, one of the sites was a huge 20-30 square mile system of filter marshes out at the edge of the glades. I could leave my crib here at 6:00am and it would be say 76 degrees and pleasant. An hour later as I was passing by the big sugar mill a few miles east of Belle Glade on the way and it was 56 and freaking cold. It won't make a damn bit of difference to Jones if he gets fired. Some other AGW outfit will hire him immediately. Look at Michael "The Hockeystick" Mann. McIntyre and other showed that not only was his work wrong, it had been deliberately designed to be wrong and produce the desired result. And what happened to his scientific career? Nothing. He was snapped up right away and seems to be being used largely as an expert on how to twist models and game the system.

If you know without a doubt that what you are doing is rock-solid and your results are right, why would you care that people want to see your data? The more it's scrutinized and validated, the more outstanding your science would be considered. Would these same scientists be afraid to release and allow for review current information on the earth's flatness?
Secondly, let's imagine, that these emails had come from the RCC and discussed a church decision to hide/create/regarding the "hoax" of the virgin-birth and how the RCC would continue to perpetuate the hoax. Think the BBC, et al would sit on that story? Or, let's say a "news" organization obtained some classified information on methods the US government used to track money transfers between known terrorists. Let's say the "news" organization knew the info was classified, that the methods were currently used, and that the government had documented success that could continue if only the methods remained classified. I bet the NYT would sit on that story....don't you? Posted by: The Hammer at November 25, 2009 11:54 PM (YBTwf) 117

Here is my slightly drunk, middle of the night hypothesis, complete with some big science words:
1 CO2 levels are rising 2. Some tree rings patterns are showing growth patterns with which dendrochronology traditionally associates with increases in temperature or extended growing season. 3. Temperatures are not rising 4. Is it possible that the tree ring growth patterns are directly effected by the rise in CO2 as it is essentially "tree food" 5. If the tree ring proxy data is removed due to potential multicollinearity do the BE-10 ice cores show the same divergence with respect to today's more accurate measurement techniques? 6. If the answer to #5 is yes, did the sun short Soros? Posted by: Jean at November 25, 2009 11:58 PM (xCBQ4) 119

Perhaps the leaker was testing if the journalist was interested in taking the ball and running with the files. It was probably better in the long run that it didn't happen that way, though. A few emails leaked to a journalist can be pretty easily spun--it's a hell of a lot harder to make a 50 MB file of emails, charts, and other documents just go away. East Anglia is doing damage control, the BBC reporter admits he screwed up by not running with the story, and the AGW cultists at realclimate are desperately using any argument they can (including the lame "there's nothing THAT bad" and "ooh scientists are nasty to each other, big deal" arguments). Just imagine that Ben Bernanke, Hank Paulson, and Tim Geithner sent out emails stating that their calculations on TARP showed that the bailout wasn't really necessary to save the economy, and that it was going in the shitter anyway. And then said they were going to have to hide that information from people who were skeptical of the claims. Can you imagine the media firestorm that would ensue for something like that? And TARP was just a one-time event--the CRU's scientists have been influencing the AGW debate for DECADES, with their research and data sets going out to scientists across the globe and being used as the foundation for climate studies. The result has been an incestuous circle-jerk of manipulated or incomplete data disguised as "peer review" that's taken as a given, not something to be analyzed objectively. No, I think it's a good thing that the media didn't pick up on this initially, because it eventually would have been snuffed out. Now that the info is out there for everyone to look at, there's no way a sympathetic, morally compromised journalist can mute the discussion by withholding information. While it's true that the BBC meterologist in question received some emails back in early October, the ONLY ones he received were those that involved the concerns that Jones & the rest of the Team had with his "Where's Global Warming" article. He did not say that he had received ALL of the emails (and related computer code and data) that was released in November. Before we all pile onto something, let's make sure that it's accurate. There's enough smoking guns in the material that was released to blow a few sizable holes in the AGW crowd - don't give them the opportunity to duck and run by shooting at a (relatively) innocent bystander. As noted above, what Hudson said on his blog was: "I was forwarded the chain of emails on the 12th October, which are comments from some of the world's leading climate scientists written as a direct result of my article "Whatever Happened To Global Warming".' Here's the email that started the "trail" that I think Hudson is referring to (contained in #1255530325.txt): "Subject: BBC U-turn on climate Steve, [Stephen H. Schneider] You may be aware of this already. Paul Hudson, BBC's reporter on climate change, on Friday wrote that there's been no warming since 1998, and that pacific oscillations will force cooling for the next 20-30 years. It is not outrageously biased in presentation as are other skeptics' views. [7]http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8299079.stm" There's actually about 10 separate emails, which are related iterations of the same "chain". It's not clear exactly which chain Hudson received (though I've not gone back to his blog to see if he has clarified this point). Cheers. Posted by: Ian at November 28, 2009 09:42 PM (+BTV5) 138
