anyhow, it's hilarious to see the left suddenly be the ones burden w/ responsibility of war, they don't know what to do. when Bush was in office, they made Iraq a polarizing issue that almost cost Bush what should have been an easy re-election period, then they decided to take up Afghanistan as their main cause & kept telling us how we need to focus on the war over there, now here they are getting their wish & they're melting down over this issue! there's a reason that even w/ the anti republican 2006-2008 movement, the GOP still owned the foreign policy issue

This was inevitable among the denizens of the fever-swamps on the Left. Obama knew that his Afghanistan policy -- whatever it was -- was going to piss off a sizeable chunk of his voters. Abandon Afghanistan and please the hard Left, but alienate the other 65% or so of Americans. Double down and bring the moderate Donks and the GOP on board, but cheese off your most fervent base. What to do?
Obama knows that, rail and froth as they will, the Left will still line up behind him. It's not as if they're going to start voting for GOP candidates out of spite. Pissing them off really loses him nothing other than good-will, and he probably knows that the good will of the hard-left doesn't buy much anyway. Still, I don't buy this (purported) troop-increase as anything other than a domestic-politics pander. Obama couldn't care less what becomes of Afghanistan -- he's only doing this because he blew off a lot of hot air during the campaign swearing he'd do it, so now he's stuck. But I guarantee you that this plan will have all kinds of landmines buried in it: those fabled "off ramps" and "exit strategies". He will give McChrystal ludicrously ambitious objectives, place impossible conditions on Karzai, and then call the whole thing off when his ridiculous plans come to naught. McChrystal's objectives are to stabilize and train, not to engage and win (to his credit: he knows that the situation got out of hand, and he has to work with the situation as it is, not how he wishes it to be). The biggest failure of the Bush era in Afghanistan was a failure to understand that Afghanistan is not a sovereign nation in the same way that, say, Iraq is -- it exists on the map only as a convenience to cartographers. Neither its people nor its (nominal) government labor under that misapprehension. Afghanistan is the frontier, a backwater full of violent cavemen, and it has always been so. Any war-winning strategy does not begin with "civilizing" Afghanistan; it begins by simply putting a mechanism in place to prevent their madness from spilling out into the wider world. A smart US policy would comprehend that "corruption", in that part of the world, is simply the way things are done -- and have been for untold centuries. You're not going to change that behavior, and it is wasteful even to try (as we discovered in Iraq). Posted by: Monty at November 25, 2009 12:29 PM (4Pleu) 17

Actually Democrats did everything they could think of to undermine Lincoln.
Yep. Read up on the Copperhead movement. There was a time when George McClellan, at one time the senior general of the Union Army, was bruited as the Democrat contender against Lincoln in the 1964 Presidential election. He was never a great admirer of Lincoln (once referring to him as "the original gorilla", and often lamenting Lincoln's supposed dullness in his letters to his wife). However, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, as staunch a Democrat as ever lived, became a close supporter and friend of Lincoln. And many fine US Army officers were Democrats. I should also point out that the relative ideologies of both the GOP and the Democrats are vastly different than they were in the Civil War years, so dont mistake the political affiliations of that time with those of the current time. Example: until the 1950's or so, black communities regularly voted for the GOP (mainly out of affection for Lincoln). But the 1960's "Great Society" -- a cynical plan hatched by the New Left -- drew blacks and other minorities into the Democrat fold, where they have remained ever since. The South more generally, which was solidly Democrat from Reconstruction through the Reagan era, turned to the GOP when the Democratic party lurched to the left.

As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, the great rationizing cometh. There will be one hellova hullabaloo here of rationalizers when President Barack Obama tells the nation that he has decided to escalate even further into the Bush/Cheney failed follyActually, this is an interesting admission on the part of a Leftist. I've claimed repeatedly that leftwing politics is primarily about the acquisition of power, nothing more. The left worked hard to elect Obama, but before that made a pacifist stance its primary purity test. For an example, see Lieberman. If the majority of them endorse Obama's escalation, they've reputiated everything they've been *publicly* arguing for the last 8 years. Hell, a majority of the left seems to be troofers anyway, so why the heck should they be supporting the war in Afghanistan? Posted by: 18-1 at November 25, 2009 01:02 PM (7BU4a) 59

Posted by: Tushar at November 25, 2009 01:20 PM (DRC3Q) Actually, one of the great ironies of WWII is that Wilkie was the interventionist candidate in the 1940 election, not FDR. In fact, FDR claimed Wilkie planned on sending American boys to die in European wars. Of course in 1940 FDR had already started a "secret", "illegal" war in the Atlantic, attacking German subs. #90: Better than you, I'd wager. I don't see the connection. The Taliban we're fighting these days are pretty much different than the one we overran in 2002. AQ is no longer a factor there. There is a great deal of truth to the assesment that the main reason we are fighting is because we are there. This is not to say Pakistan can't use some help containing these cave people and I'd be all for giving them that help. But the idea of fighting to control territory in that toilet, can't see it.

The ghost of Hitler could referee, and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk and the Passenger Pigeon. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedom. Posted by: Robert Heinlein at November 25, 2009 01:31 PM (7BU4a) 102
Funny how they realize that when it is going to make Obama look like he is ramping up the War Machine, all of a sudden it is time to kick some Ass! I also find it quite funny how the left can simplify everything down to..... "No War = Solution" without any consideration for the future or how the geopolitical structure is effected. I wish they would just come out and say it.... "We have absolutley no real world solutions, so we if criticize our own country maybe the rest of the world will think we are sweethearts and play nice." It would make our culture war much easier to except. The left has a serious issues with puting Compassion over Commonsense. They need to deal with that disease before it ends up eating them alive. See..I wouldn't have that much of a problem with taking a break in the Middle East, if we all understood that we are going to have to go back someday, completely control the immmagration situation in this country, and be willing to throw our Military Power around to keep the crazies in check. But until the left gets off the "Blame America First" kick, we will probably be better off attempting to produce some big results over there, and do it ASAP. C'mon, like anybody at DU gives a shit about a soldier.
They couldn't give two half shits about our troops. These are the same people that wish we didn't even have a military so the money saved could be used to give them and their buddies more "free" government handouts. These are the "people" that support late term abortions and even letting babies that are born alive be left to die in refrigerated rooms. But in everyone of their other arguments "it's for chiiiiiiiiiildren", "Republicans hate chiiiiildren". You can go to their site and read most of their threads on almost any subject and a lot of them break down into hoping soldiers come home in body bags (even if the subject started out about global warming). But now they act like they care about our troops? Choosing not to fight never stops a war. It only determines which side wins...just ask France. The left has a serious issues with puting Compassion over Commonsense. They need to deal with that disease before it ends up eating them alive. I got into a Facebook debate with some left-wing twit a few weeks ago who tried playing the "compassion" card in regards to social policy. I sarcastically remarked that it was funny how no one knew how to practice compassion until the government told them how to do so, and went on to say that a simple human virtue like compassion doesn't require the coercion of the state--it's charity, freely given and not forced The left's version of "compassion" is completely superficial, since it's based on the notion that compassion must be government-mandated rather than individually practiced.

@120 ChemJeff, My belief is that most of the non-radical lefties understand the fact that the United States is powerful and a cause for good, but they believe it is unfair for us to have so much, and we should be the ones to sink our Aircraft Carrier to raise the Dingy, so to speak, all in the name of Compassion. So instead of them leaving and having to conform to something they know it not superior, they feel the right to make us conform to their Idealistic Utopian desires, the whole "Your to stupid to understand whats best," routine! I believe they have overestimated the reality of how much the United States is actually capable of helping the rest of the world. When ,in this country, your told since you were in kindergarden that you are "special," "there are no winners or losers", "faith is evil," and the "United States is an Imperialist Force," then your gonna have a large group of people a little lost when it comes to the reality realm, and I find that most of them are quite afraid to actually let anybody know how they really feel about the issues, it's all about image, and what somebody else thinks about them...You know......kinda like Childern! The French, British, and Italians grabbed a lot of land and placed harsh indemnitys upon the Germans. This opened the door for the Communists and Hilters Socialist partys to rile against the Allies. Poland was also created after WWI and most ot it was German land. The Germans were stomped on pretty bad after the war.

Sure the libs are crazy, but isn't there a genuine question of what is the best way to proceed in Afghanistan? I don't want to waste our blood and treasure on that hell hole trying to build a nation. All I care about it protecting America.
I agree. We have no responsibility to build a nation in Afghanistan. Somewhere along the line Americans have been duped into thinking that it is our responsibility to rebuild areas that we had to destroy in order to protect our national security and defend ourselves. This was because of too many people who didn't really understand the reasons behind Reconstruction and the Marshall Plan, but just took it as a given that we "have" to fix everything we are forced to break in war. That thinking must stop. Sometimes ... fields should be salted. Does that mean we have to stay there? What is the objective? What are the tactics that will prevail? How do we avoid the mistakes that plauged invaders throughout history? I think even conservatives can disagree on the best policy. I am not seeing anyone who claims to know how to define and achieve victory there. Well, loosening our ROE to make it somewhat realistic would be a good start. Unfortunately, we have been moving in the opposite direction, with McChrystal being one of the fools who was for a far more restrictive ROE, designed to police rather than kill. Even with his political ass-kissing in that, The Precedent still treated his recommendations as if they were babblings on a note that one 3rd grade girl sends another. And McChrystal hasn't raised much of a stink about that ... I have yet to figure out why none of the general staff have resigned over this ridiculous attack on our military that The Precedent is OBVIOUSLY engaging in (as the dithering was his strategy from the very start). The bottom line though is that Obama has been exposed as a weakling. He ran as a pro-Afgahanistan war candidate. His tough talk on Afghanistan and Pakistan was the only sensible stuff he ever said, but everyone knew that he was lying his ass off when he said it. His inaction and his strategy to bleed our military by indifference is no surprise. Frankly, The Precedent should be up on charges. He is clearly working against our nation. According to him this is the "necessary war." He appointed McChrystal and now he wont give his General what he needs. That is offensive to me. He's incapable of making a tough decisions. That's not true. The Precedent makes tough decisions all the time. Look at how he's been ramming stuff down our throats since the minutes he got in. The PRecedent made a decision about Afghanistan long ago and that decision was to dither and bleed the troops, there. He's been carrying that decision out and will only grudgingly allow the minimal number of troops as reinforcements in order to be able to stretch the pain and loss out as long as he can. The Precedent has no problem making decisions. His problems are that he is as dumb as a box of rocks and that all of his decisions are oriented towards how to most harm the US. He has been very consistent in this. I only hope the General can accomplish his goals with the troops Obama commits. I heard unsourced info that he really wanted to ask for more than 40k but knew he couldn't. Posted by: California Red at November 25, 2009 03:10 PM (9K6fX) The Precedent will put one road block after another in the way. He will do his best to scuttle the mission and harm our nation and military. The Precedent is exceedingly easy to predict. Just think of what would be terrible for the US and that is likely what he will do. Posted by: progressoverpeace at November 25, 2009 03:33 PM (A46hP) 166

"Somewhere along the line Americans have been duped into thinking that it is our responsibility to rebuild areas" Colin Powell. Maybe not the original sin, but the one that burned it into the American consciousness. If you consider he tried everything he could to derail Gulf War 1/Desert Storm, why not a poison pill, to make any future conflicts that much harder to support. Posted by: MDr at November 25, 2009 03:45 PM (ucq49) 171
Sure the libs are crazy, but isn't there a genuine question of what is the best way to proceed in Afghanistan?
That problem has vexed everyone from Alexander the Great to Genghis Khan to the Moghul Dynasty of India to the British. It's a tough nut, for all kinds of reasons. It's not know as the "graveyard of Empires" for nothing. Part of the problem is that Afghanistan itself is pretty much a worthless shit-hole, but it sits astride some interesting trade and communication routes. The old Silk Road from East to West; the Siberian-Asian route from north to south; the Hindu Kush passage from India to the Orient. It's not a destination for most, but if you're busy building an empire, you have to pass through there at some point. Afghanistan is not a country. The lines you see on the map mean nothing to the tribes; they hold no love for (or even respect for) the "government". And Afghanistan's chronically lawless state destabilizes Pakistan (which isn't really a "nation", either). And Pakistan has a) a very large and restive Muslim population, and b) nuclear weapons. A chaotic Afghanistan means a chaotic Pakistan, and that's not good for anybody but the bad guys. Posted by: Monty at November 25, 2009 03:49 PM (4Pleu) 172

Posted by: MDr at November 25, 2009 03:45 PM (ucq49) It is hard for me to put into words my contempt for Powell. He's an idiot (not in the pejorative sense, but truly a stupid person) who has never seen a war he thought needed to be fought. His ascendancy in through the ranks was a pathetic shame. But, as if his stupidity wasn't enough, he showed what a despicable, backstabbing scumbag he was when he let the Plame fiasco drag on and on, hamstringing our entire government over nothing. His support for The Precedent was no surprise to me, at all. Anytime I hear anyone talk about "The Powell Doctrine", I bust out laughing. Powell can't think of any war in history that he would have supported. His move to prematurely end the first gulf war was enough of a demonstration of his lack of skill (in anything) that his career should have abruptly ended at that point ... but ... he got a personal Marshall Plan for his career. Lucky him. He repaid it with Plame, his pathetic tenure at State, and his support of the retarded marxist. Great stuff. Posted by: progressoverpeace at November 25, 2009 03:55 PM (A46hP) 173

Posted by: koopy at November 25, 2009 04:12 PM (XllG0) He's gotten more conservative? Are you kidding? During the election, allah argued that he was more comfortable with the Indonesian imbecile in the White House since, "he's got brains to spare for the job", as opposed to Palin being VP, which AP looked at the same exact way that the lame stream media did. "More conservative"? And, for your information, allah still thinks The Precedent is a smart guy - as he argued with me when I took him to task for posting the idiocy that the Copenhagen Olympics trip had to be in the bag beforehand. I don't have to say how that prediction of allah's turned out. Allah doesn't know what the hell he's talking about and he has misjudged just about everything. You think that someone who posts one idiotic babbling by the brain-dead MegaMac after another is "more conservative"? I'll try to explain this slowly for you dipshit. The predictability of your comment is saying i'm just here to stick up for Allah, it's exactly what a person who would whine "he started it" would say. And since you obviously didn't understand my original point, i'll try one more time. Losing in Afghanistan, on the other hand, is easy to define. It is anything other than Victory. Now, walk through the second and third order effects of Losing. We open ourselves to another couple of decades of terror attacks based on our Paper Tiger image. We lose another few thousand innocents. And we end up with a major land war, somewhere, sometime, fixing a problem we left festering. The Iranians go full speed ahead with their nuke program, then kick up their unconventional war against the Sunnis into a conventional war. Maybe the Taliban liberates a Paki nuke and triggers it in the US. The Pakis and Indians go at each other. The Chinese end up owning Central Asia, in conflict with the Russians. Bottom line, it's a bigger mess than today. And eventually the madness spreads to our continent. I've been to a couple of war zones. I'd rather keep them in other peoples' back yards, thank you.

I call BS on the left's indignation with the war. When Bush was president, there was a daily body count and people clamoring about coverage at Dover AFB. Now, not so much.
Their choices are limited--gamely support President Kumbaya and argue that they're going after OBL (in the wrong fucking nation, incidentally), or accede to the facist, baby-killing, missionary-position-fucking, Jesus-loving, gun-owning, Palin-financing greedy inbred banjo-Gordon Gekko evil nexus, eat their pride, and support Satan's handpicked own. No, no, no. The point is to call Obama a chickenhawk. After all, he hasn't even served in the Texas Air National Guard, and is sending Americans off to fight in foreign wars.
Also, he's escalating the war in Afghanistan only so he can seize control of the imaginary oil pipelines. That was the reason Michael Moore ascribed to Bush, so the same motivation must hold for Obama. Posted by: Ernst Blofeld at November 25, 2009 09:25 PM (x0aCf) 194
