2010 Campaign: Giuliani Leads In Race For NY Senate Seat, GOP House Hopeful Takes Break To Play In NFL

First, Rudy.

Democratic incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand may have a serious problem on her hands if Rudy Giuliani gets in next year’s race for the U.S. Senate in New York State.
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of voters in the state finds Giuliani, the former Republican mayor of New York City, leading Gillibrand by 13 points – 53% to 40%. Four percent (4%) like some other candidate, and just two percent (2%) are undecided.
News reports that Giuliani has ruled out a run for governor next year and is interested In the Senate race could turn Gillibrand’s bid to fill out the rest of Hillary Clinton’s term from a close struggle to an uphill climb.

I still would like to see Giuliani run for Governor. I know that's a more up hill battle against Andrew Cuomo but he'd have a decent shot. That would free the Senate race up for former Governor George Pataki. Yeah, George isn't my ideal candidate either (well, the 1st term Pataki was ok) but I'd like to win both seats.

Rudy still hasn't announced and quite frankly I'm not sure he'll make the run. Consider that the '10 race is a special election to fill the last two years of Hillary's term, he'd have to run again in '12. I'm not sure Rudy wants to essentially spend the next 3 years campaigning almost non-stop.

The second story is an amusing tidbit.

Former Philadelphia Eagle Jon Runyan will challenge Rep. John Adler (D-N.J.), but first he will make a brief NFL comeback next year.
Runyan said late Tuesday that he has signed on for the rest of the season with the San Diego Chargers, but that the games will be his last. He said he will indeed pursue a run against Adler once the season is done.
While it will prevent him from getting an earlier start, Runyan's season should be over by early February at the latest. That will allow him nine months to run the race.

I can't really blame Runyan.

First, who wouldn't want to spend the next two or three months in San Diego as opposed to south Jersey?

Second, it's the NFL. If you are a football player, you go if they call.

Third, it's likely not that big of a deal. December is a dead time anyway and how far are the Chargers likely to get anyway? The publicity from this will likely out weigh a few months off the trail. Can you imagine the boost he'd get if they won the Super Bowl? Unless of course, they beat the Eagles. Then he's screwed.

Actually, I think he would like that, but in a good way. Campaign season is the only time that most people give a darn about government, so this would give Rudy more attention (read, tv apeparances, etc.) than he would otherwise get, which he would like. I'm not talking about Obama-like endless campaign stuff; just an added feature of the job.

Maybe in ordinary times, the Senate would be too boring for Rudy, or other executive-oriented politicians. But the current Obamacle (Obama + debacle) changes that. I also think Rudy would find Albany extremely dulll especially since Albany is two hours+ north of NYC, and it's just a depressing place (Albany Law School '89 grad here...)

Bennett's vulnerable because he's basically seen as a seat-warmer right now, but I think the Rs have a better chance of winning the governor's seat because Ritter is so unpopular. Ritter's big downfall was trying to be a centrist, business-friendly Democrat like Romer or Lamm, when the left-wing base in the state has become much more influential and despised his anti-abortion views, while the right opposed all the left-wing policies he followed. McInnis will probably take the gov's seat by default; I'm not really sure who they could run for Senator that is particularly outstanding, and if former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff decides to run, he could beat Bennett in the primary and give McInnis a run for his money in the general.

The state is purple, but it's a very deeply divided purple--despite the current state representative makeup, the Dems had to run centrist-seeming candidates like Salazar and Markey to gain the upper hand in reps. They can always count on the 1st and 2nd going Democrat because of the demographics in Denver and Boulder, but have to pick their battles everywhere else.

31 Kirk is a strong contender to take over Obama's former Senate seat. He's the frontrunner in the primary, but has to cover that Cap n Trade vote. He's walked away from it already after touring the coal parts of Illinois. It's a huge vote killer because those parts know Cap n Tax is Cap n Close. It would decimate these areas of Illinois.

Kirk's likely opponent is Alexi Giannoulias, a 32 year old hotshot banker that is now the IL Treasurer. He's lined up a ton of Illinois Democratic Party endorsements early. He's already been elected to one statewide office that didn't have Obama on the ballot, but that was also the same race where Blagojevich was elected to a 2nd term.

Needless to say, the Illinois Democratic Party isn't in great shape today.

Add North Dakota (if the current Governor runs) and you are at 9. California may be a long shot, but it is in play at least, so there is your 10th. Wisconsin (Feingold) is on the list. Right now, Russ is ahead (with possibly Tommy Thompson making a comeback) but his approval rating is below 50, so that makes him vulnerable.

The more interesting fact is that the Republicans have less seats to defend. Right now, there are about 4 Republican seats that are vulnerable: Missouri, Ohio, New Hampshire and Kentucky. North Carolina is sort of like California and Wisconsin - Burr is not real popular, but the Democrats can not recruit a decent candidate. Kentucky may be safe now that Bunning has decided to retire.

Last poll had Blunt (the R) trailing Carnahann (the dynasty D) by 1. However, Blunt was winning with the independents in double digits. It will be a turnout election. Blunt comes from the Springfield, MO region, which is the Republican stronghold. Carnahann is not going to be able to cut into Blunt's strengths in the rural area. So, it will come down to A) who gets their vote out and B) can Blunt cut into the Democratic advantages over the last 2 elections in the Kansas City and St. Louis suburbs.

Giuliani was also way ahead of McCain 12 months before the election too, and Obama wasn't even on most people's radar screen as a serious candidate.

I think Giuliani's executive temperament is more suited to being NY governor, and he'd undoubtedly be of more benefit to the State as Governor than US Senator, but as someone NOT living in NY, I'd rather see him in the Senate.
