| Obama Went To China And All He Got Was A Mao T-Shirt![]() "He came bearing a long shopping list, including Chinese support for tougher sanctions on Iran and more flexibility by Beijing on currency exchange rates, but Obama was met with polite, yet stony, silences....Not only is the U.S. president coming away without any definable concessions, but the Chinese appeared to be digging in their heels.....Perhaps most disappointing was China's failure to budge in its opposition to tougher sanctions on Iran. With their extensive oil interests influencing their policies toward Tehran, the Chinese are increasingly seen as an obstacle to reining in Iran's nuclear ambitions..... "Obama did not meet with Chinese journalists, lawyers, human rights advocates, environmentalists or any ordinary Chinese, and an expected meeting with Hu Shuli, who recently resigned as editor of China's leading business magazine, did not materialize.Obama's limited results in part reflect the profound shift in Sino-U.S. relations and global politics, with China's rapid rise and America's weakened position, especially in the wake of the financial crisis."That's part of a rundown of stories on Obama's failures in China by Seth Leibsohn at The Corner, go ahead, click over for the whole sad story. Leibsohn makes the point this is all very reminiscent of the Carter years and that's true. The problem is we are only 10 months into this administration and it's already worse than the Carter years. Jimmah, for all his ability to do the wrong thing took much longer to reach this level of danger. One difference I think is that Carter looked at a tired and weathered country (the upheavals of the 60s, Vietnam, Watergate, the oil shocks) and decided that there just wasn't anything that could be done. He was simply overwhelmed by the situation and didn't have the capacity to see another way, so he tried to put a smiley face on what he saw as an unreversable position. While Obama certainly inherited some significant challenges, just as all Presidents have, he seems to see this set of challenges as an opportunity to remake America (his words, not mine). Instead of dealing with these problems as temporary and fixable, Obama has decided they are an opportunity, not to reinvigorate the country but to bring it to what he sees as its rightful place in the world...just another country among equals. Nothing special, except perhaps for the mistakes its made and the damage its done. It's simply not possible to look at his attitudes and actions toward countries like Iran, Burma (I know, don't care what the thugs want to be called) and Honduras or thugs like Cavez and Putin and conclude anything other than a willful effort to be more accommodating to them. Look at his willingness to throw the Dalai Lama, a fellow Nobel Laureate, under the bus on this trip. The leaders of China, Russia and Iran are nothing if not pros. They have all survived tough and often deadly systems to get where they are. They are not going to be impressed or moved by Obama's 'humbleness' or 'humility'. They are going to see it for what it is, a kick me sign. And trust me, they are going to kick him and by extension us, right in the butt for the next 3+ years. Unfortunately, Obama seems to see that as a feature, not a bug of his policies. Comments1

Also, despite his all-around incompetent bungling, Carter actually has an accomplishment: he brokered a peace deal between Israel and Egypt that has lasted to this day. Obama, on the other hand, has given a lot of pretty-sounding speeches. Sorry, Carter gets way too much credit for this. Carter provided the local and generally annoyed everyone to the point of just getting something done. Way before Camp David, Anwar Sadat realized he was going broke fighting Isreal and Isreal realized that with one less boarder to defend, they could turn their attention to the asshats who really deserved some scrutiny, Syria and Iraq. Carter was just able to throw in a few dollars to the Egyptians to sweeten the deal. Sadat and Begin deserve the lion share of the credit. They were the one's who had to go home and convince the hard liners it was a good deal. In Sadat's case, it only cost him his life. Posted by: Mallamutt at November 18, 2009 11:07 AM (V9SYy) 18
so he tried to put a smiley face on what he saw as an unreversable position. Trust me on this: Carter did not try and put a smiley face on anything I can recall of his presidency. The man preached doom and gloom to us; his speeches weren't about smilynesses ...they were about malaise. About making do. About accepting our national demise. How it was our fault, yadayada. I can recall this time, and Carter wasn't, umm, cheery. It was Renaldaus Maximus who came along and gave us - Americans, not just Republicans - hope after the dark days and depressing views of Carter: he didn't just put a smiley face on things, though ...he created a smiling, productive America after the fricking peanut farmer did all he could do (to that point) to kill our spirits and the dynamic American can-do -ism. You had to be of age, I guess. But the difference in mood of the country with the Reagan election was electrifying. ...gawd I miss Reagan. But Carter? No. Worse, he laid the groundwork for what became 9/11 ...he cost us what you see now, and in his words "my advisers all counseled a military response, but it would have cost 20-30 thousand Iranian lives". And that statement shows why you NEVER elect a weak-willed pussy as commander-in-chief. Those 3,000 innocents in the Tower that day were killed by a President of the United States ...may he rot in hell, the bastard. I think the left will soon get desperate. Could an assassintion attempt by "right wing nutjobs" be far behnd? Mark my words... I would not be surprised. Right after the Great Political Upchuck of 1994, there was the lamestream media hype of the militia movement in the wake of the OKC bombing--they were *trying* to encourage more of it. I can see the Commiecrats and the DemSM (but I repeat myself) subtly encouraging someone to shoot Obama. A martyred Obama might be worth more to the Commiecrats than a disgraced buffoon a la Jimmuh Cartur. I am also reminded in 1996 of the fabricated story of a wave of black church burnings--which statistically didn't happen. That was agitprop straight out of the CPUSA archives.

13 I think the left will soon get desperate. Could an assassintion attempt by "right wing nutjobs" be far behnd? Mark my words...
Shit I hope not. Otherwise liberals will never realize how much damage socialism can do and will wax on about how much he could have done and wish for another just like him.

As much as I hate....HATE this disp[icable persident, I would never EVER want to see an American President assasinated again. We are NOT a banana republic despite how BO runs things. We elect leaders, not shoot them.

What I see is a racist who harbors long-standing grudges against those who are melanin impaired. And Rightzilla, I agree, except in the fact that this entire election reeked of third world, personality driven elections. A dumbed-down electorate bodes ill for the country.

And Rightzilla, I agree, except in the fact that this entire election reeked of third world, personality driven elections. A dumbed-down electorate bodes ill for the country. Then it is our job to smarten up the electorate, not succomb to the ultimate conclusion and go "coup" on things. That is absolutly giving victory to the libs socialist desire and we have to fight it with true democracy backed by a robust capitalist model. Putting a bullet in a president is the death nell of our way of life. It confirms that what HE wants is what we will get. The tea parties, the Palin momentum, all of what we are doing to make 2012 reverse this current direction would be for not and we could settle into our Hugo Chavez like existance. "Diplomacy of deference" - How's that working out for you, Barry?
Posted by: Penultimatum at November 18, 2009 01:50 PM (LxXXO) 101
Wait. Isn't "deferential" the proper attitude for a house servant? Butlers, maids, houseboys are deferential. Heads of state may be polite and protocol-bound, but deferential? To other countries' leaders? That's just weakness.

17 Walter Cronkite deserves more credit for that peace deal than Peanuts. Sadat and Begin were the ones desperate for peace, albeit on the correct terms for their national interests; anyone could've been the neutral third party (which today, by the way, is Sarkozy's France - he's hosting a Peace Summit with Israel, Fatah, and Syria later this year).
