| Overnight Open Thread (Mætenloch)Good evening all Moron-types. It's Sunday so get those last few licks of fun in while you still can. If You Haven't Been to Hoover Dam recently, It Looks Different These DaysThe Hoover Dam Bypass is now under construction. The bridge will be called the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge and is expected to be finished in late 2010. I was there this past August on a weekday and didn't see any work going on at all so take the 2010 date with a grain of salt. ![]() Are You Male, Over 40, and Have a Waist Size Over 33.5 inches? Agree with Todd. One has to be very immersed into comic books to truly enjoy them these days. There's this one guy, Linkara, who reviews bad comic books for an Internet show, but a lot of the time, he's explaining back story that a casual reader wouldn't know.

#37, if I got whacked in a bullshit friendly fire incident and my chain of command committed multiple perjuries to cover it up, my family would probably be pissed off too. The Army used him before, during, and after his enlistment and death and he was idealistic enough to think it wouldn't happen.

Probably pretty rare in the NFL. He does a lot of charity work. He actually downplays that part of it. I don't agree with the sheninigans and wouldn't consider him a role model for his behavior on the field. But I feel comfortable knowing that if they are 2-13 or 6-2 like they are know, they don't have to cheat to get the record they accomplish for the year. Look up Kevin Tillman who is his brother. I think an article he ( Kevin Tillman) wrote was actually posted here a while back, it's just the typical anti-war crap. I don't think there's anything from Pat Tilman himself, it's just his brother Kevin who said he (Pat) was anti-war, admired Chomsky etc. Whether he's telling the truth or not, i don't know, but at this point it's irrelevant because it's accepted as truth. The new version of The Prisoner on AMC sucked all kinds of suckiness.
I was flipping channels and caught an episode description on the Guide. It is a remake of one of the original episodes ('Living in Harmony'). Add to that the first episode is 'Arrival' redone, and you have a six-part miniseries distilled from a 17 part series, where at least two episodes are just remakes. So what was the fucking point again? Can't we just re-watch the original, then? Surely no one is of the opinion that Caviezel >= McGoohan. And McKellan as a running antagonist? No rotating #2's? I admit, I tuned in for about 45 seconds. Caviezel's character is all obvious emoting and an open book, so, apparently, they sacked the idea that #6 was as enigmatic a character as anything else in the show, and now he's just a 'real' guy. Sheesh. I wouldn't care if Hollywood et al was content to prouce nothing but shit for the rest of eternity if they would stop fucking over the stuff that their parents and grandparents actually did right. PGiS about the "naughtiness": It's not about the naughtiness, it's about the directness. That's all. Here's an example: I'm on this dating website and this one woman I'm emailing with, in only her second email, gives me her phone number and wants to set up a first date already. Chemjeff, in all fairness you're on a dating website. Getting asked for a small date by a girl you e-mail with isn't really forward. You've already both taken the steps to be on a dating website, you know.
I say set up a small date. Just so you see her and talk in person. It doesn't have to be a big deal. It doesn't mean you're commiting to anything or agreeing to do anything... uh.... advanced. lacey, what's bad about Tracy Morgan? I actually think he's kinda funny on 30 Rock, actually. Al Gore's been on 30 Rock before. He only had a short scene, but it was pretty funny. I like Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy. It's hilarious.

Posted by: wherestherum at November 15, 2009 11:01 PM (xJEoC) It's a good question with no answer. he's just one of those people (for me) that when you see them, you just want to throw a shoe at your tv. I think it was when he got his tv show on tv. It was just awful. I'm not even sure it ran for a full year. Here's an example: I'm on this dating website and this one woman I'm
emailing with, in only her second email, gives me her phone number and
wants to set up a first date already. My gut reaction to this is just
to recoil. That's way too fast and forward for me.
A phone number isn't fast and forward. I think a phone number is honest and real. To me it says - I'm not wasting my time online, I want to meet a real-life person and maybe you are that person so lets get together and find out. Online chat and emailing is all fine and good, but it gives each person the ability to think about every response first and there is a computer barrier in the conversation. I want to see the looks on peoples faces when they talk. I want to judge their non-verbal communication as much as I judge their verbal communication. You really can't get to know people through a computer, so I think if people are looking for a real relationship it's always better to get together in person as soon as possible (that's not to say that online conversations are a bad thing because they aren't - I just mean that they shouldn't be the only thing. Why waste weeks of online chatting just to discover that the person has some sort of serious problem being able to have a real-life conversation?) This guy took me on a breakfast date once. Turned out he didn't like
breakfast food. So, I had to wonder, why pick a breakfast date then?
It's the fastest meal. It takes longer than "drinks" and it's a meal together, but if it all goes to hell breakfast can be eaten quickly... but if all goes well you can linger over coffee, spend some time in a park or the mall, wander around town, get lunch and a movie, etc... If it's a failure it's quick. If it's a success it can last all day. Also, there is no booze involved in breakfast so there is no chance of getting drunk and saying something stupid. Breakfast as a first date is the best way to go in my opinion. Posted by: Elizabeth at November 15, 2009 11:19 PM (hA5JK) 280

It took me literally about an hour to read but I have bullet points (bc I'm a dork like that!) so you don't have to unless you want to: Highlights of his complaint: John Lee Riches d/b/a Bernie Madoff (????) alleges he's the father to all sixteen kids of both Kate Gosselin and the Octopussy. He claims-- *Riches (the pro se litigant) who also goes by d/b/a Madoff (not sure how you can be a d/b/a of another person!) met Gosselin in 2000 at Long John's Silver in Harrisburg, PA while eating 'octupus'. I just thought it was weird for him to suggest it and then almost the first thing he tells me when we're sitting down is he doesn't really like breakfast food.
I had a first date with a guy who wanted to take me to the beach, but he was late in picking me up and he had a family obligation later in the evening. He ended up getting lost, then ran out of time and took me back, but stopped at In N Out b/c I happened to mention I wanted it. He bought me my dinner to go and dropped me off at home. I never called him again. Posted by: wherestherum at November 15, 2009 11:25 PM (xJEoC) 304
Yeah, because I mean, he didn’t like bacon.

Elizabeth, I live in Seattle, we have coffee dates for that "quick first date" venue. I just thought it was weird for him to suggest it and then almost the first thing he tells me when we're sitting down is he doesn't really like breakfast food. Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at November 15, 2009 11:22 PM (RZ8pf) My friend went on a date this summer where the guy suggested the caprese salad and then proceeded to tell her how he hates tomatoes because of his awful mother who used to squish them on his face when he was bad. She ate all of her tomatoes, asked for the check and he let her pay half and the tip. Buh bye. Posted by: loppyd at November 15, 2009 11:25 PM (UJIeT) 306
PGiS,
Yeah, the fact that he didn't like breakfast food is a little odd.... maybe he heard about the benefits of breakfast as a first date from a friend or something. When I would have a guy ask me out to "coffee" as a first date I would recoil the same way I would recoil to "drinks'. It just seems too impersonal to me (especially with coffee since most coffee places serve their stuff in to-go cups). To me that seems as personal as waving to each other across the street.... plus I'm one of theose people that is really really disgusted by people who chew with their mouth open, so I want some food involved in the first date. hey speaking of chicken fried steak- my brother brought back a side of
beef from Montana and gave me some cubed steak and some round steak- so
I need a CFS recipe
You don't need much, just make a mix of flour w/pepper in it and slap your steak in it. Some people use garlic and onion powder too in their flour and also an eggwash, but it's up to you. Then just heat up a skillet and fry it up. After it's done cooking just mix some milk and flour in the drippings and make a gravy and use lots of pepper in it, then chow down. Jones,
One of the things my mother always taught me is that lack of simple table manners is a lack of respect for the people around you and for yourself. I just don't want to date anyone who has no respect for the people around them. I'm not going to be a bitch about little things like putting your napkin in your lap (I am NOT my mother LOL) but if I can keep my mouth shut while eating even with severe painful TMJ, then I think that healthy people should be able to do the same thing. If DC and Marvel wonder why comic book sales keep heading inexorably
south, perhaps they should remember why they read them as kids.
They read them for escapism. Reading these dark disturbed anguished character stories doesn't feel like escape, it feels like making you want to slash your wrists. Part of the reason sales slid so much was the fact that comics left the grocery stores and convenience stores and are now almost exlusively sold in collectibles stores, called the "direct market." They all mostly use one distributor, Diamond Distribution, and that hasn't helped. Shenanigans by Image Comics in the mid-90s didn't help either when they basically single-handedly ruined the collectibles market and caused quite a few comic stores to close up shop. While I think that op-ed piece was pretty damned good, saying the comic market declined solely because of left-wing politics is pretty silly. Then citing Frank Miller's most awesomely awesome The Dark Knight returns is even sillier! (It was largely, if anything, a giant libertarian finger to authoritarianism.) He's absolutely right that you have to pick up too many books to follow anything these days. Comics are $3 and $4 dollars a piece these days.....absolute murder! When I was a kid I could get a giant stack of comics for a few bucks, and now a small stack is pushing $40 bucks. Intertwined and convoluted story-telling combined with high prices pushes people out of the market. But it has to be realized, publishing is failing all over. Was it Newsweek that only sold 60,000 copies of an issue lately? I do believe that's worse than the top 50 selling comic titles on the market at present. I've been saying, the comics publishers have to really take advantage of the internet. Dead tree industries are as dead as the trees they print on. I would like to thank all the morons and ettes this evening for the discussion on the importance of proper manners, good stuff. I've been reading some Austen this week and, wow, did we ever end up a long, long way from where we once were. p.s. the thing about austen that annoys me is that so many people think of her just as chick-lit or just like her for the romance and the colin firth british accent and hotness angle, but she's actually, and i'm totally sincere, i think she may be the funniest writer ever. very subtle sometimes, but almost every page is laugh out loud funny. it just annoys me sometimes that a lot of people don't seem to get that and don't notice when she's being tongue-in-cheek.

So is this turdsnorgler a complete idiot or are we missing something? Politico:
“I know that the United States has been disengaged from these (Asian) organizations in recent years. So let me be clear: those days have passed,” Obama said (blah blah Politico blah) “As an Asia Pacific nation, the United States expects to be involved in the discussions that shape the future of this region, and to participate fully in appropriate organizations as they are established and evolve,” Obama said. Well, fuck him six ways to Susquehanna, but "disengaged?" WTF? Yet the weirdest thing is... has Barry ever looked at a map or a globe? Is it too tuff for his widdle bwain? The US is an "Asian Pacific" nation? Look, I could see saying, awkwardly and with tongue-twisted maladroitness "North American Pacific," but unless General Zod had recently rearranged the tectonic plates, North America is not Asian. Not even close. Asia is on the western side of the Pacific, and the US is on the eastern side. Simple geography, Barry. Perhaps his brats could enlighten him on the subject, if they have any brains. Jeesh, Scarborough is having one of his more obnoxious shows this morning:
First they snear at Palin for daring to imply that McCain's campaign manager is fat (they actually woke Maureen O'Donnel early to come on and say this) - this coming, of course, from the side of the political spectrum that tried to make weight an issue in the New Jersey Gubernatorial campaign - and then Joe goes off about what a great, GREAT job Hillary is doing. Right - all she did, after all, was pretty much destroy the Middle East peace talks and piss off the Pakistanis with every word to come out of her mouth! But Hillary is SMART because she is worried we are spending too much money and because she thinks we need to restore our fiscal sovereignty. Palin is DUMB because she is worried we are spending too much money and because she thinks we need to restore our fiscal sovereignty. Funny how that works, ain't it? Deseret News, The (Salt Lake City, UT) - July 21, 2001 Congressman's office aide is found dead in Florida FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- An office worker for U.S. Rep. Joe Scarborough was found dead Friday in the congressman's district office.Preliminary findings from the medical examiner's office showed no foul play or any outward indication of suicide, said Police Chief Steve Hogue.Authorities identified the woman as Lori Klausutis, 28. I saw 2012 last night, just to quench my thirst for seeing massive destruction and chaos on the big screen. There was a preview for a movie called "Did you hear about the Morgans?" It stars Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker as a dysfunctional high-end couple who are forced to go into the Witness Protection Program and live in Wyoming. Real original, Hollywood. It looks like a clone of "For Richer or Poorer". Anyway, there was some woman shooting a gun and Jessica's character says "Look, it's Sarah Palin". WTF? First NCIS and now some stupid movie? BTW, Avatar looks like it's going to suck the big one too. While visually stunning, it looks like the typical "rich white American meanies are going to rape a virgin ecosystem and the natives are going to righteously kick their asses with the help of military turn-coats" flick. Hoover Dam is gorgeous. Who else has visited that dam and in days past taken its tour inside to eye witness the glory of American machining? Who else caught this week's PBS broadcast of its construction? The Hoover Dam was proudly/humbly built by American laborers who suffered intense torture (14 deaths acknowledged from the poisonous gas fumes) within the bypass tunneling. But the dam itself is a magnificent monument to the American amalgam of science, artistry and MANUAL labor performed by American citizens.
Yes, I appreciate the need for commercial transportation. But I'll admit that this bridge looks like graffiti blocking view of the dam's architectural statement. Yet the 1930s dam was not intended to be an interstate highway bridge. We know who's paying for the new bridge. I'm curious, who is building it? The same Chinese interests who "repair" San Francisco's? Or the "Spanish" corporation given the bid to build TX highways? Did Reid/McCain fund the lining of international interests pockets compounding the costs of the new bridge? Since Hatch owned the interests that built Lake Havasu City, his profitable interests are worth observing, as well. Finally, if built on tribal reservations, what role are our native tribal councils playing in this? Gateway to new gambling casinos? Win/win? I can't believe I am the only one who remembers this story about the aide dying in his office. This is from the Ft. Walton Daily News:
Two Fort Walton Beach police officers who witnessed the autopsy of Lori Klausutis, an aide to U.S. Rep. Joe Scarborough, reported her skull had been fractured. The extent of the head injury has never been reported by those investigating the July 20 death of the 28-year-old at Scarborough's Fort Walton Beach office. The body, which had apparently lain on the floor all night, was discovered about 8:30 a.m. by a couple arriving to discuss a work permit issue with Klausutis. The popular young aide's death was ruled accidental. The autopsy information, noted by Officer Stephen Sequeira and crime scene expert Dusty Rhodes, was found in a Fort Walton Beach Police Department report turned over Monday to the Northwest Florida Daily News. Police Chief Steve Hogue said he decided to open the investigative file on the Klausutis case after a public records request was made by Daily News Editor Ralph Routon. The skull fracture didn't change the findings about what killed Klausutis, according to Associate Medical Examiner Michael Berkland. A hairline fracture like the one found is completely consistent with an unconscious person's fall and totally inconsistent with a physical assault, he said. Of course, it would be consistent with someone falling for whatever reason. Not saying he offed her, but an accident due to shoving, or finding her and not reporting it, would be something blackmailable. Mostly, I am posting this to prove I am not making things up. "Present" Bow-ou-bama never could independently reach from factual reports a conclusion, whether right or wrong. Given Obama's record, his point is to persistently perpetually postpone any "decision" until he has decimated his own forces prior to their return home, weakening his "opposition" that just so happens to be those under his command in our armed forces. Obama means to destroy American morale, in our military and at home in our citizenry. Obama means to deny rule of law; he's already decimated contractual law. Obama's decisions are consistent with sabotage.
