Your tax dollars at work:
Of the $1 billion in clean-energy stimulus money spent since the beginning of September, $850 million has gone to foreign wind companies. It doesn't take a bunch of experts at a hastily planned "jobs summit" to discover this isn't the way to bolster employment in America. Indeed, the 11 U.S. wind farms that received stimulus money from the Treasury have imported 695 of the 982 wind turbines to be installed, creating 4,500 jobs overseas. That's far more overseas work than the stimulus money has created in the United States. Should I post the Dewey Whetsell letter about Sarah? Or has everyone read it? Okay, I'll post it, and apologize in advance if everyone's already read it. I feel like wasting electrons tonight to annoy the Greenies.
"The last 45 of my 66 years I've spent in a commercial fishing town in Alaska. I understand Alaska politics but never understood national politics well until this last year. Here's the breaking point: Neither side of the Palin controversy gets It's not about persona, style, rhetoric, its about doing things. Even Palin supporters never mention the things that I'm about to mention here. 1- Democrats forget when Palin was the Darling of the Democrats, because as soon as Palin took the Governors office away from a fellow Republican and tough SOB, Frank Murkowski, she tore into the Republicans Corrupt Bastards Club (CBC) and sent them packing. Many of them are now residing in State housing and wearing orange jump suits. The Democrats reacted by skipping around the yard, throwing confetti and singing la la la la (well, you know how they are). Name another governor in this country that has ever done anything similar. But while you're thinking, I'll continue. 2- Now with the CBC gone, there were fewer Alaskan politicians to protect the huge, giant oil companies here. So, she constructed and enacted a new system of splitting the oil profits called ACES. Exxon (the biggest corporation in the world) protested and Sarah told them don't let the door hit you in the stern on your way out. They stayed, and Alaska residents went from being merely wealthy to being filthy rich. Of course the other huge international oil companies meekly fell in line. Again, give me the name of any other governor in the country that has done anything similar. 3- The other thing she did when she walked into the governors office is she got the list of State requests for federal funding for projects, known as pork. She went through the list, took 85% of them and placed them in the when-hell-freezes-over stack. She let locals know that if we need something built, well pay for it ourselves. Maybe she figured she could use the money she got from selling the previous governors jet because it was extravagant. Maybe she could use the money she saved by dismissing the governor's cook (remarking that she could cook for her own family), giving back the State vehicle issued to her, maintaining that she already had a car, and dismissing her State provided security force (never mentioning, I imagine, that she's packing heat herself). I'm still waiting to hear the names of those other governors. 4- Now, even with her much-ridiculed gosh and golly mannerism, she also managed to put together a totally new approach to getting a natural gas pipeline built which will be the biggest private construction project in the history of North America. No one else could do it although they tried. If that doesn't impress you, then you're trying too hard to be unimpressed while watching her do things like this while baking up a batch of brownies with her other hand. 5- For 30 years, Exxon held a lease to do exploratory drilling at a place called Point Thompson. They made excuses the entire time why they couldn't start drilling. In truth they were holding it like an investment. No governor for 30 years could make them get started. This summer, she told them she was revoking their lease and kicking them out. They protested and threatened court action. She shrugged and reminded them that she knew the way to the court house. Alaska won again. 6- President Obama wants the nation to be on 25% renewable resources for electricity by 2025. Sarah went to the legislature and submitted her plan for Alaska to be at 50% renewables by 2025. We are already at 25%. I can give you more specifics about things done, as opposed to style and persona . Everybody wants to be cool, sound cool, look cool. But that’s just a cover-up. I'm still waiting to hear from liberals the names of other governors who can match what mine has done in two and a half years. I wont be holding my breath. By the way, she was content to to return to AK after the national election and go to work, but the haters wouldn't let her. Now these adolescent screechers are obviously not scuba divers. And no one ever told them what happens when you continually jab and pester a barracuda. Without warning, it will spin around and tear your face off. Shoulda known better. http://tinyurl.com/y8jfgqn Posted by: arhooley at November 14, 2009 10:25 PM (GKXA7) 27

#242 Blazer gives good advice. However, I found out from other peoples misfortunes, that IF you have ANYTHING that has to run on computer chips, Appliances, furnaces, and of course, your PC, Do Not turn these on until you know (by testing) that your generator is cranking out the correct voltage. Failure to do so WILL result in destruction the boards, thus your main unit. Higher voltage is worse than low voltage. In the case of a A/C or a Refrig. Low voltage will destroy the compressor, if you have computer boards in the product. PS. If you do not know, unplug them.

320 Jim, what do you think: hardware RAID via BIOS or software RAID via Ubuntu Linux?
Posted by: chemjeff at November 15, 2009 12:03 AM (tJ4Ym) RAID anything for the average home user is typically more trouble than it's worth. RAID-0 for any kind of data that can't be very easily replaced is the bullet train to pain-ville. I have used it, but only for my OS or system drive that I already had an image snapshot ready to go, so I could replace it in about ten minutes. After screwing around with every storage configuration known to man I finally settled on duplication of data across two disks in a non-raid configuration. Think RAID-1 without the RAID part.

It is irrational. It is because Sarah Palin did all the things that liberal feminists were expected to do (challenge authority, etc.) but she did it as a conservative Republican. FX is showing Fantastic Four: Silver Surfer again. The siege continues.
AMC has been playing Outbreak over and over again... and Bravo is playing Goodfellas for the umpteenth time this month Speaking of that, maybe you guys can help me out here. While Barack is in Asia, I'm here to watch over things, you know he's got the utmost confidence in Sheriff Joe. Anyway, I'm trying to record both Silver Surfer and Goodfellas when the phone rings and it's some Indian or East Pakistani or whatever named Achmed a Rent a John or something. Son of a bitch was swearing at me about stealing his skyscraper so I hung up on him. Come back and the DVR starts going apeshit on me. I pressed enter a bunch of times, then banged my fist on the side to see if I could get it to work right. Well, it blinked on and off and now it's blinking "12:00" over and over. I think the thing lost Barack's Berlin speech too. Can you guys tell me how to reset this thing? Posted by: Joe the Biden at November 15, 2009 12:19 AM (sYxEE) 360

Sure I peed, lots of cars in this neighborhood still have Obama stickers on them
There's been a sharp drop in Obama bumper sticker sightings here in Palm Beach. The first 4-5 months they were common as dirt, now you might drive around all day without seeing one. My neighborhood is probably in the range of 70% black. Not too many here anymore either. I saw some polling maybe 3 months ago showing his support among blacks dropping into the 80% range. If my neighborhood and the bumper stickers are any indicator, it gone down a lot more since then. I think peeling a pumper sticker off is a fairly definitive indicator something is going on. There were lots of Gore and Kerry bumper stickers on cars down here that hung around for years until they just wore off. I have a suspicion a lot of blacks are lying to pollsters giving them the politically correct answers when it comes to Obama. He ain't delivering, and they've been hit pretty hard, and will get hit harder soon, by the Pelosi congress. Posted by: Purple Avenger at November 15, 2009 12:31 AM (LbCHv) 396

Same here. I rely on Google Translate for everything else. Elizabeth, speaking of smoking hot women you may or may not want to have passionate one night stands with, Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki made for a very pleasant two weeks at the US Open. I'm sure she'd be glad to sing to you, she's very friendly! Caroline Wozniacki is meget smuk (very beautiful)..... and I think those are some ugly looking words to say very beautiful. You mentioned singing which reminds me that I also know how to sing Happy Birthday in Danish. Sassy,
Well, I'm happy to be going home, that's for sure. The boy and I had to really big fights in the last couple of weeks and I'm just over being insulted and told I wasn't really trying. Actually the last fight was at 4 am Saturday morning. I actually haven't slept in about 36 hours now. Posted by: wherestherum at November 15, 2009 12:38 AM (GZnia) 419
True, Sassypants, but that also means it is just about the most useless language you can know. Other than understanding what the dying dude says at the beginning of The Usual Suspects, you got nothing. Though it is great if you want to talk to family without anyone around having any idea what you're saying. Except one time my dad made a somewhat ungentlemanly (though very much AOSHQ lifestyle compliant) remark about a comely young lass in an elevator to his friend, and she turned around and slapped him. Small world, sometimes.

@400 ... smart guy! Not really Latin but I find the phrase amusing. According to Wikipedia ...
"The phrase originated during World War II. Lexicographer Eric Partridge attributes it to British army intelligence very early in the war (using the plural dative, or perhaps they meant ablative – it's the same form: illegitimis). The phrase was adopted by US Army general "Vinegar" Joe Stillwell as his motto during the war.[1] It was later further popularized in the US by 1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater." Blazer, the way I see it, Perth, Australia is a city on the edge of civilization anyway, even in good times or in bad. To say it's a place that's "less free than America" is to say that people there don't own guns, which I don't agree with. It's a frontier city. I just don't agree that this place can be saved from within. Even if we get President Palin, she will face - like President Reagan did - a powerful bureaucracy resistant to change. It's way bigger than what she faced in Alaska. I don't have much hope, that's all.

Communism, as advocated by the hard left, proved not workable in practice. Some may try again in the future, but human nature dooms it to failure and dissolution. I think the Russians (and Chinese) have shown that the next evolution beyond communism is a handful of powerful Oligarchs running the show. Dictatorships OTOH, have proven a durable scheme through all of recorded human history. I've seen the future its Dictatorships and Oligarchs. Katya, The reason the original "The Prisoner" worked was because of Patrick McGoohan. He had starred for several yrs in a Tv series called Danger Man, aka Secret Agent. His character was named John Drake. All of us who watched "The Prisoner" were sure it was the same person, as the charecter in the show was a secret agent who abruptly resigns from the service. The series was pretty much the forces that be trying to discover by hook or by crook to fathom why this person had quit. It was certainly quite different. The only way this new series could work, IMO, is if it starred Kiefer Sutherland as the prisoner. Would never have to give his name, but you would just know who he was. Which would make it one of the more interesting shows on TV today. But, I think I'll DVR the new one, and see if it has anything going for it. Not gonna hold my breath though.

chemjeff -- the most concise, convincing argument I ever heard about why the US would never go (or more importantly, stay) socialist was when David Horowitz scoffed at the question and pointed out how well the Soviets took to capitalism -- they didn't. They've had generations of oppression and can't get out of that mindset. Americans are basically can-do individualists who don't want the shite Ozero's selling and are sick of it after 11 months. just read the NYTimes review of Sarah Palin's book: Yet, Mr. McCain’s astonishing decision to pick someone with so little experience (less than two years as the governor of Alaska, and before that, two terms as mayor of Wasilla, a town with fewer than 7,000 residents) as his running mate and Ms. Palin’s own surprisingly nonchalant reaction to Mr. McCain’s initial phone call about the vice president’s slot (she writes that it felt “like a natural progression”) underscore just how alarmingly expertise is discounted — or equated with elitism — in our increasingly democratized era, and just how thoroughly colorful personal narratives overshadow policy arguments and actual knowledge.

474 460- Lou, I had an anti-Obama clingy on my car during last year's election, and I pretty much lived in fear until I took it off. Nothing ever happened to my car, thankfully, but the sign I had in my yard got trashed all to pieces. I also had these teenagers who would ride their bikes back and forth in front of my house chanting, "Obama, Obama ..." Freaking weirdos.

underscore just how alarmingly expertise is discounted — or equated with elitism — in our increasingly democratized era
A fucking piece of paper from Hah-vid, some well placed connections, and a bullshit name and they anoint themselves as "experts". Half of these "experts" couldn't find their asses with a map and a flashlight along with a feature story on how to find your ass in the New York Times. Remember, it was "experts" who determined that Maj. Hasan was no danger to anyone. They're scared shitless of being exposed as clueless phonies and will do whatever it takes to keep the veneer of "expertise" which somehow justifies well dressed idiots drawing a large salary. Check your State law as to whether or not you can shoot/knife/ harm a intruder in your abode. In Ohio, you must prove absolute fear for your life. If not, you go to jail 20 up to life. The State will send home a rapist/murderer/ absolute low life to make room for you. They want to make sure a person does not have the option to defend their home/apt/etc from the criminals. Editor,
For years I lived in a condo that had that same echo problem, but when I lived there none of my neighbors creeped me out, so yeah I shut the window but I didn't worry about creepy neighbors. Hell, one of the neighbors across the tiny courtyard was quite loud and several people were known for shouting "shut your windows Dave" to the loud guy when he was being particularly loud. It was like a neighborhood joke that we couldn't keep any secrets from each other even with our windows shut. That never bothered me because those neighbors were not creepy... these neighbors are creepy so the thought that they might hear and might have even gotten a cell phone recording just really bothers me. I just realized the boy will have to deal with our nasty landlord
without me to run interference. That's going to be interesting.
I would love to be a fly on the wall for that! It would be quite interesting. My ex called me in September asking me to help him with the condo landlord. I just delighted in telling him "nope, that's your problem now". Hell, I dealt with that landlord for over 10 years and I'm so happy that I don't have to deal with it anymore. (or course considering my current situation I'd happily deal with the condo landlord rather than the old man that owns the building i'm in now). PA, and he then followed up the blender accusation with me stealing his strainer...
A few years ago I walked off a job over a $35 Unibit (a kind of universal drill bit that will do a lot of different sizes). I had a new one, the guy I was working with (nominally "the boss") had an old whupped one. For months he'd been going on and on about how he'd gotten years out of that old one by just using some "special oil" when drilling holes with it. One day his old beat one turned up in my bag at the end of the day and my new one in his and I casually mentioned that somehow the Unibits had gotten mixed up during the day. At that point he stated I was confused and the new one was in fact his. I let it slide that day, but it kept gnawing on me for the next week or so. Now, this is a guy who admitted up front to being a felon and doing 15 years for something (never said precisely what, but it could only have been murder or a major weight drug deal to get 15 years cuz this guy wasn't an Ivan Bosesky type). I had no problem with that. Previously, him and his partner decided they trusted me enough to do some blow in front of me one day. I could live with that, as long as they weren't jacked on the job and fucking up so much I couldn't fix it. His electrical work was a tad on the crude and sleazy side for a guy with a Master Electricians ticket, which I found annoying and troubled me somewhat since I'm totally anal about electrical stuff. Unlike 99% of electricians in the field, I want need it to be 100% perfect. I was still able to live with that since he was preping and I was following up finishing all the detail work and could un-fuck his disasters when I got there (I probably spent 200 hours unfucking this guy's crude shit too) But when he lied about that freaking Unibit it stuck in my craw hard. I came to interpret that as an indicator of a major character/personality flaw that would eventually cause me a lot of grief and suffering if I stayed around this person for any length of time. I walked and don't regret it. Often "little things" that seem trivial are indicators of much larger problems that are hidden beneath the surface. If someone would fuck you for a $35 Unibit, what are the chances they'd fuck you out of $50,000 if the opportunity came up? Pretty good in my mind. Eli Lake broke a story today showing that the National Iranian American Council (NIAC) appears to have acted as a lobbyist for the Islamic Republic, in violation of its tax status and likely also in violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Its staff seem to be abandoning the sinking ship. Until yesterday, Artin Afkhami listed himself as having two jobs: A blogger for the NIAC and a researcher for the New York Times. Here's a google cache of his "Linked In" page. Today Artin — who has fabricated quotes and refused correction — has erased all mention of his employment with NIAC. He simply wants the world to think he never worked for the organization as it was pursuing the Islamic Republic's foreign-policy objectives with regard to sanctions and fighting concern over proliferation Michael Rubin at the corner(@nro Posted by: willow at November 15, 2009 09:21 AM (1kwr2) 690
