Here We Go Again With Obama Bowing And Scraping

This time it's to the Emperor of Japan.

obamajapanbow.jpg

I'm sure there are a lot of liberal bloggers burning up the Google servers trying to find an image of Bush doing this. Hopefully for their credibility they can find something better than Bush leaning over to have a medal placed around his neck.

Also, I guess given this we can now assume that idea that the idea Obama was just picking something up off the floor when he bowed to Saudi King Abdulah is um, no longer operative.

As for this case, is it proper protocol for the US President to bow to royalty? Nope. Here's how the NY Times described a much less subservient image of Bill Clinton kind of nodding to Akihito.

It wasn't a bow, exactly. But Mr. Clinton came close. He inclined his head and shoulders forward, he pressed his hands together. It lasted no longer than a snapshot, but the image on the South Lawn was indelible: an obsequent President, and the Emperor of Japan.

...But the "thou need not bow" commandment from the State Department's protocol office maintained a constancy of more than 200 years. Administration officials scurried to insist that the eager-to-please President had not really done the unthinkable.

"It was not a bow-bow, if you know what I mean," said Ambassador Molly Raiser, the chief of protocol.

What Clinton did may not have been a Whoppie Glodbergesq "bow-bow" but what Obama did certainly was.

I think most Americans find the idea of bowing to royalty kind of silly. The Emperor of Japan would be different simply because it's the cultural tradition to bow to anyone when you meet them in Japan. Obama however, isn't a tourist or a businessman hungry to close a deal. He is American head of state and he doesn't bow to other heads of state. Well, he didn't until recently.

"Slappy" found the video, it's below the fold. Oy.

More about bowing in Japan...

I wouldn't be upset if it was a little head nod or even a shoulder kind of deal but this is clearly subservient.

It depends on the social status or age of the person you bow to. If the person is higher status or older than you are, you should bow deeper and longer. It is polite to bow, bending from your waist. Men usually keep their hands in their sides, and women usually put their hands together on their thighs with their fingers touching. If it is a casual situation, you can bow like nodding. The most frequent bow is a bow of about 15 degrees. You might feel strange to do it, but try to bow in Japan. You will be considered very polite.

I wonder if Akihito bowed first. I doubt it since they are shaking hands and the idea of the Emperor bowing to someone would be scandalous in Japan. Plus, you don't need to do both, shake hands and bow, and these things are (or should be) choreographed in advance.

Obama's bow is way too deep. Yeah, Akihito is older but that's not the important factor here. Obama should not be putting himself where he is in the position of lower status.

That's fine for Barack Obama, International Man of the Lef but President Barack Obama needs to stand tall for American (literally and figuratively).

Besides, George Washington bowed to the Japanese emporer all the time, and no one said anything about that.

10 Interesting.  When he bowed to the Saudi king, it was clearly a bow but not so deep.  I guess this time, he wanted to make sure everyone understood, without a shadow of a doubt, that he is very intentional in his bowing.  No doubt about it.  It's a bow.

As a side note, his bow as pictured, is clearly a bow from subordinate to boss.  Not even a bow between equals.  I thought this guy was supposed to be cultured.  Does he really think he's subservient to the emperor?

Who said being an otaku was a total waste of time and money?  If Obama had been more interested in tentacle pron, instead of communist economic theory, he'd at least know how to bow as an equal.

What an ass.

The United States of America was founded by men who risked everything to throw off the chains of tyranny; who rejected monarchy and ‘the divine right of kings’; and who believed with all their heart that ”… all men are created equal.”

The Founders pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to this proposition.

American Presidents do not bow their heads to any foreign leader.

b Hussein Obama has dishonored the institution of the Presidency with this unseemly and embarrassing behavior.

52 I'm not quite sure what to think. Bowing in Japan is NOT just for royalty. It's for anyone, just the depth of the bow shows how much respect. I think since they are our allies he has to bow to some degree, and since the emperor is his elder(though not superior) he should be bowing lower than the emperor does. As far as Japanese bowing goes, that one is just a strong bow, not the classic 90 degree emperor fealty one.

Or maybe not when it comes to international relations as the POTUS.

64 Apologies for the 'cut and paste' but this point HAS to be made:

. . . what makes this bow even worse is the depth of it.

In terms of Japanese etiquette, not only is he proclaiming his lesser status to the Emperor, he’s not even proclaiming his own status as a ’state leader’.

Hint: it’s the kind of ‘bow’ a lower-level ’salary-man’ [or Senior OL (office lady)] would make.

Not even the CEO of Mitsubishi would bow that low.

If this was meant to ‘impress’ the people of Japan, it’s an ‘Godzilla-sized’ epic fail. Obama has gone beyond about 5 AU’s past ‘joke’ status with this gaff.

||||||||

And, to make matters even worse, He did this BEFORE going to the PRC. The SCM in China will have a field-day with this.

To the average Chinese: he ‘appears’ subservient to the Japanese, especially if he doesn’t render a similar bow to Hu [and yes, it will be perceived as an insult.]

To the Party Elites seeing this: he’s a uncultured fool with absolutely no sense of ‘face’.

In the ‘world’ of Asian culture, that’s a disaster on a level I can barely begin to explain to you. To put it bluntly, in the eyes of PRC’s ruling-elite, any credibility Obama had as a ’state’ leader, is gone.

Oh, don’t worry. They’ll go thru the motions and treat him as a ‘head of state’, but behind closed doors, amongst themselves they’ll regard him as little better than a land-less peasant, or worse, a self-effacing bureaucratic ‘toady’.

We are so f*cking screwed with mega-bozo at the helm.

He’s gone past Carter with this . . . with a JATO pack strapped to his a$$.

This is the mother of all gaffs.

As a side note, his bow as pictured, is clearly a bow from subordinate to boss.  Not even a bow between equals.  I thought this guy was supposed to be cultured.  Does he really think he's subservient to the emperor?

Oh, it is even worse than that.

In the Japanese bow the back is kept the back straight and eyes forward, eventually looking slightly downward - but the head is not dropped.  This is very critical since each person must be aware of just how far the other person is extending the bow (the deferrential individual will actually angle the bow slightly away from the other person so as to see out of the corner of their eye that they have extended below the other person), and true Japanese bowing can involve multiple bows, often to make sure everyone has the chance to get it right.  The hands are also kept flat at ones sides.  You either bow, then shake hands, or vice versa, but you should not attempt to do both at the same time, many people do, but it is considered very akward and poor form.

It really is not something that should be attempted by anyone not properly schooled in the formality.  It's not as strict as it used to be and many Japanese have gotten used to foreigners giving it a go, but just like any other attempts at protocol, you really should have some clue as to what you are doing.  Obama just confirmed the impression that American is populated mainly by ignorant goobers.

Embarassing.

The liberal Bush-response seems, so far, to point out that Bush bowed to the Pope, that he quasi-molested Angela Merkel, and that he winked - WINKED!!!! OMFG, he WINKED!!!! - at Queen Elizabeth.

As to the Chinese, I think Obama will probably bend over just as far in bowing to them, if not lower.

He will just be turned the other way when he does it. And probably grab his ankles.

108 It's ironic.  Obama who is refusing to bow to the wishes of the American people (who do not want cap and trade, do not want nationalized health care or Democrat "health care reform", do not want illegal aliens being naturalized, do not want government bailouts of banks and car companies, who do not want wasteful pork laden "stimulus bills"and who do not want terrorists to be treated as American citizens with civillian court trials) is so eager to bow (unasked) to foreign leaders.  In fact, Obama doesn't even want to listen to the will of the American people, let alone entertain any kind of compromise.  I use to think The Birthers were a bunch of nut jobs, but now I'm not so sure.  He really does hate America.  Unbelievable.

115 Oh, and yesterday, Rush pointed out how Rev. Wright viewed Hiroshima and Nagasaki as one of the biggest crimes America has ever perpetrated.  Rush played the clip of Obama being asked by the Japanese press if he thought that the use of the atomic bombs was wrong.  Obama never answered the question and danced around it.  The reporter asked it again, and Obama went on to the next question.  Like Rush said, he didn't answer it because he couldn't say what he really wanted to say, at least not yet.  So in effect, Rev. Wright is Obama and Obama is Rev.Wright.  This is the first time a U.S. president hasn't defended the use of the bombs used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  Absolutely disgraceful.

In fact, no American of any position or status should ever bow to any royalty of any country, as we have none ourselves.  This probably goes double for those who represent us.

When George Shultz was Secretary of State, he'd meet with ambassadors before they left for their posts. He'd call each one into his office, where he had a big world map on the wall. He'd say, "Can you find your country on this map?" And the ambassador on his way to (say) Peru would point to Peru.

50 Actually, as an expert and Ph.D. in Oriental Studies, I can tell you that Obama's bow is perfectly acceptable and, indeed, admirable. He did the right thing here.

Actually, as a former resident of Japan, who earned a good living by being able to speak the language and deal with Japan's non-Western culture, I say you are full of shit.

It was explained to me early on that foreigners don't know how/when to bow, and shouldn't do it ---unless they fully understood the postures and social nuances.  Otherwise all they generally do is make those they bow to uncomfortable.  For example:   bowing and shaking hands at the same time is something NO two Japanese would do.

ThomasD's comments @ 104 are spot-on. Ditto CPT's @ 64.

No, I'm not saying Obama should have done it - he was wrong to, because of what the act means to Western eyes.

But I think the reason he did it was because he was thinking in terms of its Oriental significance: a bow in the Far East is the equivalent of a handshake in the West, that's all. Though it's usually just a curt drop of the head, in practice - as you can see the Emperor himself doing in that photo.

The guy who invented "narcissism," as a concept, included outsized admiration of dictatorial figures and strongman types as characteristic of it.

Note who Obama's heroes, guides, and associates have been. And who his sainted missing father was. And what kind of people he fills his administration with. And whose sides he takes in foreign affairs. And etc.

The thing is, Obama is narcissistic, but not a narcissist. He's a cult-leader type sociopath; they have narcissistic traits, but not all of them. Irony is a misdiagnosis.

224 A bow in Japan is just a greeting, the cultural equivalent of a handshake.  You and the plumber bow to each other when he comes to fix your sink.  While there are guidebooks for it, most Japanese today don't even know all the formal rules for bowing, they just do what feels appropriate, so all the '30 degree' nonsense is just that.  (How many of you have read American etiquette books?)

The real faux pas here is starting to shake hands and then going into a bow.  Do one or the other, or do them sequentially.  Don't start one and then do the other because you'll have just screwed them both up.  In that sense, once the emperor stuck his hand out, bowing could be seen as inappropriate.

Bowing to the Saudi king was a bow because the man was a king -- that's absolutely wrong for a US president.  This bow is just courtesy.

But yes, other leaders of other countries will look at this and see a man, and by extention a country, that can be had.  AND they will be expecting subservience when the One comes to them, if he expects any co-operation on any issue.

As heads of state, they're are equals and so should give each other the same greeting (e.g. shake hands, give equal head nods as equals do in Japan if the government-set protocol involves "doing in Rome" sorts of things). You'll note that the Emperor is giving a "head nod" sort of bow to go along with the handshake (as Japanese businessmen do with their equals) but Obama is going too far. Literally and figuratively.

BTW, subjects of Queen Elizabeth only do a full bow (or curtsey for the ladies) in very few, formal circumstances (like receiving an award); in ordinary meetings a head nod is sufficient. So even subjects of a monarch don't do that under normal conditions.

And a second BTW, someone (Tom in Korea?) wrote in the ONT morning edition that if the One doesn't bow to the Korean head of state (undoubtedly with the Korean giving an ordinary courtesy bow and expecting an ordinary bow in return), the Koreans will be pissed.

[Now to read 211+ posts to see if I'm being redundant.]

Ummm, what's your point?

First off, we're talking about two heads of state acting in official capacities, not about how some 20 year old Japanese kids act.

Second, in my experience, the Japanese, and Asians more generally, are keenly aware of protocol and rarely do what "feels appropriate."

Really? If that's true then what Obama just did was the equivalent of a fingertip only, limp wristed shake.

If it's just like a handshake then Obama was bowing to everyone he met in Japan right? Other pics? Is there one of him bowing to the Japanese president? The sushi chef?

Posted by: Rocks at November 14, 2009 01:18 PM (MTcoh)

259 I think that this photo truly displays Obama's ignorance....look at the form of the bow, the complete subjugation of the damn thing.  In a different context that's a damn good bow.  My guess is that all of his life, has been saying to himself, "I can bow better than those guys, and when I get the chance, I'll show them."

And so President Obama has, toward both the Saudi King and the Emperor of Japan.  He has shown that he has no knowledge about the protocol of a bow or what it means when one party bends lower than another, the importance of maintaining eye contact during the bow, the inclination of the head, etc.  In cultures where a bow is commonly used there are many different kinds of bows: equal to equal, superior to inferior, inferior to superior, individual to group and group to individual; those are just the ones that I know about.

Despite instruction, presumably from the State Department.

And what do the Japanese Emperor or the Saudi King think of Obama's bow?  I suspect they don't know what to think.  Sure, maybe it sends a deliberate message, but  a bow is only a gesture, and if you are not following correct bow protocols, who knows what you are thinking?

And as every head of state knows, actions speak lower than words or gestures.  I imagine they are terrified that he is that ignorant, and more terrified if he did it on purpose.

263 I think most Americans find the idea of bowing to royalty kind of silly. The Emperor of Japan would be different simply because it's the cultural tradition to bow to anyone when you meet them in Japan. Obama however, isn't a tourist or a businessman hungry to close a deal.

You're being too kind. It's important that this "bowing-is-like-a-handshake-in-Japan" excuse not be given ANY credibility.

If Obama and the emperor were bowing to each other, that would be fine. If that's how you greet an equal in Japan, that's fine. But Obama's bow (neither of them, actually) were returned. This was a subject bowing to a prince. Disgusting.

265 Japan is a vertical society. Even the language changes depending on whether you're speaking to an equal, a superior or an inferior.

Bowing and/or who bows deepest or if at all. is a very clear indication of who is superior to who.

And yes, that will be huge over in Japan.

Hey, you wingnuts, how else is he going to save all those jobs, except by bowing and scraping?

What?  You don't know that Obama went to Asia because he is "getting serious about the unemployment situation"?  You must not listen to NPR, because if you did you would have heard "Senior News Analyst" Dan Schorr say exactly that this morning, when asked why Obama is making a trip to Asia right now.

No, you can't make this shit up, can you?  And Dan also mentioned how tough it is for poor little Obama to be in the "lose-lose" situation of sending more troops to Afghanistan and pissing off his base, or not sending them and being blamed for losing the country to terrorists.  But just remember - it's not all about him!!  It's just that everyone else, the thousands of troops, millions of Afghans, the United States... they aren't quite as important as Obama looking good, you know?

I dropped a note to NPR asking them if they all arrive at work in a little car, and pop out one-by-one, as the crown gasps and applauds.

You know, there are protocol and etiquitte specialists at the White House and the State Department whose primary responsibility is to ensure something like this is avoided...

In Japan, equals (In the personal and/orofessional sense.) will acknowledge each other with a slight bow.  So Obama (As US President, which is both head of state and head of government.) meets the Japanese prime minister (head of government) or the Japanese Emperor (head of state), he is suppose to treat them and be treated as an equal.  They should not and do not bow deeper than the other.

That Obama, once again, violated protocol...For this,  I will use a Steven den Beste's quote to complete it:

"I'd prefer malice as an explanation. Malice (and ignorance) can be cured, but stupid is for life."

Except the Emperor didn't respond in kind and it's not protocol, as illustrated by the posted New York Times article from '94 regarding Clinton.  Many of those trying to defend Obama's bow here, whatever your motivations, are intentionally ignoring some of the details to make their point, which should show you that your defense of Obama's bow is off base.  Only someone who was trying to knock his own country down a peg or two, as Obama is, would continually take actions and make apologetic statements that are meant to humble the U.S. (as if that will make us stronger and a more positive influence in world affairs).  These are the actions one expects from an enemy or adversary of the U.S., not the elected President.  How many other countries' citizens -- much less those who are citizens of the most powerful country on the face of the planet -- would find this acceptable behavior by their elected leaders?

The man-child is a joke and never had any business being considered for the presidency, much less actually winning it.  The citizens of this country have NEVER made a more damaging mistake than electing this clown.  I keep hearing that the guy is so intelligent, but he has a minor-league mind obscured by his smooth-sounding voice and speech patterns and his skin color.  Too many fear being branded racists for pointing out that this guy isn't even qualified to be a U.S. Rep or Senator, much less leader of the free world.

Aw, come on -- bowing is a vast tradition in Japanese culture, especially amongst dignitaries.

In Japan, people of equal status give slight bows to each other.  A person giving a noticeably deeper bow than whoever he/she is meeting is acknowledging the other person superior position (In life, profession, etc.).

Obama and the the Japanese Emperor are both heads of state - thus officially equal in terms of protocol.  One does not bow deeper than the other.

Akhihto knew that, and it showed.  One has to wonder about Obama's motive.

" I'd prefer malice as an explanation. Malice (and ignorance) can be cured, but stupid is for life." - Steven den Beste, in a context in many ways similar to this.

The Precedent doesn't really care about Bush. He likes to use Bush as a punching bag, but that's about it. This, and the rest of his World Traitor Tour were about nothing but harming the US. Bush was never anything more than a footnote. Shit, The Precedent apologized for colonialism during the Cairo leg of his Traitor Tour, as if the US had anything to do with that, at all - and as if the third world didn't benefit immensely from colonialism, which gave them contact with the modern world and allowed them the chance to rapidly advance without having to expend the effort to do it on their own.

The Imbecile-in-Chief also apologized for the Cold War. Bush is nothing but a useful tool for the America-hating Indonesian prick.

The Precedent doesn't care about making a fool of himself. Either he's too stupid to know how dumb he is (which seems to be a real possibility) or he just doesn't care, as he is on a suicide mission to destroy the US and the West. What The Precedent always intends to do is make a fool of the US Presidency - to denigrate and injure the office, itself - as he did so well with that moronic fiasco in Copenhagen. The Precedent is oriented towards sucking the respect and dignity out of all US institutions, so that they are injured beyond repair even after he is thrown out and tried for treason and various other crimes.

Why did the Clinton White House in '94 think that your belief wasn't true then when it came to world leaders?  Were they mistaken?  Comparing business exchanges and the exchanges between heads of state is obviously not an accurate comparison, especially when one side of the exchange acts so deferentially to the other, like obviously happened here.  It's an embarrassment for the U.S.

Aw, did I hurt your feelings, Mr. Sensitive?  Not big on receiving any criticism, are you?  Your response is the response of a child who can't defend his early post, as I certainly didn't attack you in such a crude fashion.  After all, you're the one making yourself look like an ignoramaus by acting like all forms of bowing in those situations are equal.  There is a protocol and what Obama did was certainly not appropriate.  Why don't you read the New York Times article posted above and see that even the Clinton White House in '94 knew the difference?

But you keep tossing out "intelligent" phrases like "And then kindly blow me, you condescending fuckwad."  It really enhances your credibility on any issue.  You're as big a child as Obama, but at least he even doesn't resort to the use of infantile terminology (though his recent use of "teabaggers" is pretty close).

Best as I can recall, the deep bow in a sign of subservience in most cultures.  Goes back to a time when showing the top of your head or your neck literally meant you were putting your life in the hands of your superior, as that position made decapitation easy in an era of swords.

How eastern cultures and western cultures diverged in custom from that point isn't revelant today.  We know the bow of a subject when we see one.

This is a major mistake for an American president.  It's even worse if it isn't.

Cautiously Pessimistic: If Obama had been more interested in tentacle pron, instead of communist economic theory, he'd at least know how to bow as an equal.

I actually sense a sexual undertone at work here.

I think that Obama was probably molested by Frank Marshall Davis, and possibly even by his grandfather, Stanley Armour Dunham - I think that Stanley must have been at least vaguely aware of what was happening between little Obama and "Uncle Frank", so that Stanley was at least an enabler.

And I think that there's probably a kernel of truth in Larry Sinclair's allegations [and I imagine that there was something very "iffy" going on with that Trinity United Church of Christ choir director, Donald Young, who was murdered - male choir guys are notorious for their homosexuality].

Anyway, if you want to see something similar, then watch this recent video of Shaquille O'Neal - what you are seeing in Obama and O'Neal is the kind of "on the down-low" easy & seamless bisexuality which is rife in the fatherless African-American community [which would be about 75% or more of that community].

There's a scene where the American executives are in a board room with Japanese execs, negotiating a deal. During introductions, one of the Americans bows deeply, like JugEars, and the Japanese immediately recoil in horror. Later, it's explained to him that the Japanese took the gesture as a sarcastic insult, that he was mocking their protocols.

Always remembered that scene.

When I lived/worked  there I never "refused to bow", it's just that I was not  formally bowed TO---except maybe by elderly ladies speaking super-polite language and generally behaving as submissives, as pre-war Japanese women were taught.

Other than that, nothing more than the head nod, from "shacho" on down.   They got a head nod back, then a firm handshake and a look in the eye --- which is exactly what they expected.   They did not expect me to abase myself to them.  I was not their social inferior, a subordinate in their corporate hierarchy, or a business supplicant.  I was there as the representative of the presidents of the companies I worked for.

No crap, please, about my not understanding the cultural niceties. I crawled the bars in Gion and Roppongi with my hosts until 2 AM.  I gave a speech at a wedding for a Japanese friend, in Japanese.  "Haykuten Manten", I was told.  (if you understand the language you will "get" that).   I was very comfortable with them, and they with me, which is one of the reasons I got the high-paying gigs that I did.  I knew how to behave.

If Lumpy was bobbing up and down all the time in Japan I picture him to be like the hippie idiot I saw once in Kyoto, wearing a happi coat, wooden geta, and a surgical mask.  Japanese referred to such fools as "Henna Gaijin", weird foreigners.

ctx217, slappy , rocks,  naturalfake and all the others who say Obama blew it, big time, are right.  On the money.  Perfect. Hyakuten Manten.

meh, I can't get too worked up over this. I think to bow to the Emperor is really not as horrible an act as people are making it out to be. I am a little surprised that he went a little overboard...actually no i'm not. But theres a big difference, in my mind at least, between bowing to a figurehead of an ally that holds bowing with special cultural siginificance, and bowing before a satan-worshipping, pot-bellied degenerate who heads up a country that is certainly the root of most of the evil in the world.

Living in Japan, I've extended my hand numerous times, only to get a bow in return. First couple of times I was put off, but then you have to realize, hey, thats who they are. Not disrespect, just their way.....

Obama should stand tall as did General MacArthur 64 years ago. America should bow to no nations or people, neither should Michelle touch the queen of England. Both seem to appear as uncultured buffoons.

but..In Japan, if one is meeting an elder on a formal occasion, especially at first introduction, not bowing would be insulting and humiliating to the elder party and it would be like the younger party is openly calling for a fight. This was either stupid or extremely malicious on many different levels.

He rubs American noses in his actions while further weakening his own foreign policy capital (and with a silly faux pas no less -- at least expend political clout on something bigger and better than this), and provides what can be construed as an extremely embarassing moment and/or a sarcastic snub to the Japanese (who I believe, would really like to keep a low profile where the Chinese are concerned, for many reasons -- this will just help to highlight the past, as it has here).

If his staff advised this they should be fired as fools; if he decided against advisement to do it, then he's a narcissistic fool or a very nasty pot stirrer, or both.

500 How can this guy be such a wuss on the international stage, yet he is a complete THUG domestically?

Because he perceives himself as an almost suave international sophisticate that desires to be accepted into the club so,  he's kowtowing to his betters.

On the other hand, he truly believes that the majority of Americans are backward uncivilized knuckle dragging inbred uneducated clingers that should be in a constant state of amazement of his being and should be ruled with an iron fist.

For the argument that says this faux pas is just that - yes, I mostly agree with it.

The big point to me is that it is a faux pas that Obama has committed at least twice, in public.  And committed the second one after he was called out on the first one.  Which suggests that a) he can not or does not learn from his previous mistakes, and/or b) he is unable or unwilling to listen to anyone else who might have better knowledge of the topic at hand than he does.

Put that into the context of his decision making, and....well, the dithering over deciding whether to send more troops to Afghanistan becomes clearer.

531 Obama doesn't know the correct way to bow in Japan.

If they were exchanging business cards, he'd probably screw that up too, by handing the card to Akihito with his left hand while trying to shake with his right.

The proper way is to present the card with both hands, then when accepting the card from the other person, "study" it for a second or two (a show of respect) before extending the hand for the handshake.

Wonder if he called him Akihito San, or Aki?

William Henry Harrison took the presidency during bad weather, which was such a heinous example to set for The Children that he ought to be tried posthumously for crimes against humanity. We always tell The Children to come in out of the rain. When they don't (and when they subsequently get sick and have to miss school) we have Harrison to blame.

(By the way, it was Pope John Paul I who served -- and remained steadfast in his position against a woman's right to choose -- for 43 days. But that'll be a completely different condemnation of the evils of the West. . . .)

Relocated to Chicago. Lots of construction to do, building a Marine base from scratch. Lots of opportunities for "local economic stimulus", if you know what I mean.

Of course, the Marines won't actually move into the base. Can't have those nasty military folks hanging around. By the time the base is built, he'll have slashed the defense budget enough that the Corps won't be able to pay for maintaining the base. It'll be closed down and turned over to civilian use. Daley's cronies will have a field day parceling out the unused government buildings.

This report shows many things most important of which #1) Obama has not listened to his protocol advisers or has deliberately rejected 200+ years of proper head of state protocol in the United States. both of those answers are pretty damning #2) It shows VAST cultural ignorance of Japanese culture and that is the BEST case scenario. This means the President will likely be ignorant of other matters when he goes into meetings in China. #3) Worst of all the President may be communicating a sense of deep national shame or deep national subservience. Both of these suggestions will color how the Chinese will deal with obama in meetings This stuff doesn't matter to normal people. But to the people who deal with foreign policy professionally this is life and death stuff.

While I cannot expect refinement in coming up with attention-grabbing headlines, these 'diplomatic protocols' ^  may mislead people into believing that observing the custom of greeting Emperor Akihito in this way can be simplistically reduced to a show of obsequiousness. In fact, bowing is a highly ritualized and ubiquitous form of salutation shared with at least two other countries (North and South Korea), and the non-observance of the custom of bowing can connote unfamiliarity, inattention, or at worst, overt disrespect. In Korean culture, people bow to people they recognize every time they see them and want to say hello or part ways--it takes getting used to, and it certainly feels a great deal more formalized than saying "Hi, how are you", but it can be compared to the custom among Muslims of saying "Al-salaamu `aleykum" and "Wa `aleykum al-salaam" in response (and "ma` al-salaama" in the case of parting). If two people pass by one another without bowing, they may not be familiar or they may not be paying attention, but if they do know each other, it is disrespectful not to bow.
Another way of understanding what it would be like is if a person from a culture where people always greet each other casually by sticking up a middle finger at each other greeted Mr. Obama in this way. If that culture were one that had been antagonized by the U.S. at some point, and then that people from that culture became economically and militarily powerful and culturally influential, then everyone from that dominant culture would wonder what's the big problem with middle fingers, and they would consider it demeaning to shake hands with a previously hegemonic power like the U.S.!

Isn't Barack Obama respectful? He is such a sweet guy to everyone but the American citizens. He intends to enslave them, and make their home a third world country. Can't wait for the groveling before the Chinese--he'll be prostrate on the floor before his masters.

Meh.     You've already said you were a low-level interpreter, so I suspect you were expected to do a lot of bowing.   My position was quite a bit higher, and the points remains:

* Westerners don't go around Japan bowing.

*  Nor do Asians --- can you imagine a Chinese diplomat bowing to the Emp? Or a Korean?????    Snork!!!!

*  Obowma did not follow the rules of protocol here: he violated them, embarrased Tenn-chan, and made a fool of himself.

Me pretending to be Japanese?  Anyone claiming to have worked in Japan who doesn't know who Shotoku Taishi is, didn't get paid much with the 10,000 Yen bills bearing his portrait.

For the record: I worked in English-language consumer electronics advertising for a huge Japanese ad firm when I lived there, and set up/managed local sales channels for what used to be called "high technology" to Japan and the Pacific Rim when I returned to the US.

After-hours club-crawling with businessmen is NOT part of Japanese social life that people doing business at higher levels have to become comfortable with?  Heh.

Actually, if you're going to greet Japanese dogs, it should be . . .

'wan, wan, wan'

rather than President Obama, it should be President ōbaka  [ 大馬鹿 ]

Trust me, it fits.

568 Dunno, I think wanko fits better, but it doesn't quite 'sing', if you know what I mean.

Though I must admit, as a President, he is a 'dog' [and yeah, it is an insult to dogs].

Posted by: Tattoo DePlane at November 15, 2009 01:13 AM (VLYnh)

573 I'm not a fan of Obama by any stretch, but I really don't see what the big deal is when everyone bows to everyone in Japan.

This strikes me as desperately reaching for something to complain about.

There are plenty of complaints to make about Obama that are well earned and legitimate without having to dig down into the bottom of the barrel and dredge this up.

Now I will point out that it doesn't look like the emperor is bowing in response, which maybe the emperor doesn't do in Japan...who knows?

I don't know what the protocol is there. Do other heads of state bow for him? Is this the expected behavior?

If so, then this is just bitching for the sake of bitching.

If not, then maybe someone should point this out to the Manchurian candidate so that he doesn't beclown himself in the future.

Posted by: Lee at November 15, 2009 03:07 AM (TcVyy)

574 I just saw the photos of other heads of state greeting the Emperor of Japan and it is clear that they are now bowing.

So it looks like Obama has beclowned himself yet again.

Doesn't have have PEOPLE who prep him on matters of protocol?

If not, then he should.

Or maybe he's just so extra special fruity-licious that he refuses to listen to anyone about anything.

In any case, I still don't see this as something to fuss about too much. Like I said before, there are PLENTY of real, serious problems with Obama and his agenda without having to devote time and attention to a faux pas like this.

Laugh at him, but don't lose sleep over it.

Posted by: Lee at November 15, 2009 03:12 AM (TcVyy)

Most ignorant comment on tis thread.  The empress is an older lady, so her kimono is a bit subdued, but there is nothing on this earth more feminine than a beautiful Japanese woman in a kimono.

584

Again, the bow itself is a small blunder (For Americans.), but it is indicative of a larger problem with Obama:

It is a type of avoidable faux pas that Obama has committed at least twice, in public, which could have been easily avoided simply by listening to experts who work for him.  And he committed the latest one after he was called out on the first one.

Unfortunately, we can not restrict his decision-making to just a moment's embarressment in a foreign country.

Oh Yeah, we passed a law that deprived them of our raw marerial exports thus their invasion of China would come to slow halt.  They attacked all over SE Asia to secure oil and ore from the evil colonial powers for the East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere thus removing the yoke of American, Dutch, French, and British colonialism.  If we had just met with them without pre-conditions and let them have China we could have saved thousands and thousands of American lives and avoided a costly war.  How dare we  impose our values on another country.

And yeah, if he'd done a little teeny bow it wouldn't be such a big deal IMHO, but a bow that low is way subservient, and a big protocol breach. Foreigners may be given a lot of leeway on a casual basis when it comes to Japanese courtesy, but business and politics are different, and Obama absolutely should have known better, or been advised better. Or listened to the advice he got.
