Overnight Open Thread - TGIF Edition (Mætenloch)

Welcome all M&Ms. Friday at last, Friday at last! So now you don't need an excuse to stay up late and play in the ONT.

Star Wars: How the Death Star Computer Graphics Sequence Was Made
One of the amazing things about the original Star Wars was the computer-animated Death Star attack sequence. Of course it looks completely dated now, but it was state-of-the-art at the time it was made in the mid-70's. Here's a video by the animator, Larry Cuba, where he describes how he created the sequence.

Lindsey Graham Censured By SC GOP
Okay I'll admit it: I loathe Lindsey Graham. Not only do I dislike Graham as a RINO-ish squish, but I also have a semi-irrational hated of him as a person from his holier-than-thou attitude down to his whiny accent and his goofy haircut. So this makes me happy.

The True Identity Of Your Online Girlfriend Flowchart
Sadly it doesn't have a category for the ONT moronettes. But I suspect there's at least a couple of kittehs posting around here.

Japanese Fake 'See Thru' Skirts
Somehow I don't see these catching on here.

Dogs Welcome a Soldier Home

Holding a Grudge
We're always told to forgive and forget and that probably is good advice for a happier life. But part of me also respects someone who never forgets and is prepared to serve revenge in its proper state.

Tonight's post brought to you by desperate desires:

5 I think everyone is still heavily debating the issues of Carrie's "sex" tapes on the other thread. That is where most of the morons are. I, on the other hand (no pun intended) have learned my lesson.

6 The moon-water thread is dead, and I just put a lot of work into commenting on books. Because I am an inconsiderate asshole, I will reuse the material here.

104 #89...oh, fuck both you guys, Monty beat me to it at #98.

Small bit of trivia. The first US soldier to die in Red Phoenix died in the Honor Guard Company's back guard shack at Hilltop House (the four-star's residence). I pulled my first ever shift in Honor Guard Company back there in August '99. My team leader thought he'd play fuck-around and try sneaking up on me and I fucking near put a pair of 9mm's in him.

Arc Light was good. Jack Henderson's Circumference of Darkness was much better. The old self-published iUniverse edition is better, but Jack is good people. Great book. When Bantam picked up the book, he changed the ending a bit to allow for a sequel, which he told me is underway. I recommend it to all AoSHQ readers.

I've been on a Tom Kratman and John Ringo rampage over the last year.

Clancy summed up the romantic difficulties in his writing with 'What the fuck do I know about sex? I'm a married Catholic." Too bad he couldn't get over his taste for young strange. His wife Wanda took his ass to the motherfucking cleaners, and rightfully so, for his cheating. They'd been married since he was still selling insurance for a living. I wrote a reader review on Amazon where I said he'd rushed the ending of Rainbow Six in order to make an alimony payment on time. The Bear And The Dragon was a lot better in concept, if not always execution. I can still read The Hunt For Red October and enjoy it.

Oh, and Heinlein. Yes, he and his wife apparently got polyamorous later in life. Ignore it. I do. I don't give a fuck about writers' love lives.

Heinlein's essentials for me: Starship Troopers, Glory Road, Fifth Column, and a lot of the essays on patriotism and survivalism (he was convinced we'd lose WWIII and we'd have to win WWIV with rocks and guerilla tactics) that are now only found in Expanded Universe.

That sucks.  Sorry, Kefka.  I hope you didn't watch both FF movies in one setting?  I think even one FF movie almost exceeds the amount of major movie suckage a human can view in one setting, to see both in one setting would have severe physiological and psychological consequences!

Anyway, I admire the guy's dedication to exacting some measure of revenge (dish, served cold, etc). I know how he feels. There is a kid from my old neighborhood, decades ago, who I would certainly subject to brutal payback, if given the chance. The scenario involves duct tape and a shovel.

Peeing on yourself does not constitute being shot at and receiving a second serving of scrambled eggs for breakfast is not getting a hummer.

Heh, I tried to but I got about 1/2 of the way through the Silver Surfer when I had to turn it off.  It was the military torturing the Silver Surfer that did it.  I mean that sure is subtle Hollywood, thanks for that.  Its good to know that even stupid comic book movies have to have the liberal themes in them these days.

The  Star Wars computer animation thing was pretty neat. Never really noticed how cutting edge that was back then until now. They did come close in the first one, when Jessica 'hoba was experimenting with her new powers.

The worse part about the 1st FF movie was that it was so damn boring.  Hollywood actually made a movie about 5 super-humans extremely boring.  And who the hell thought that they could play off Jessica 'hoba as a scientist by just putting glasses on her?  Although, Uwe Boll actually did worse when he casted Tara Reid, glasses and all, as a scientist in his shit-fest Alone in the Dark

81 #30, the book The Rocket Boys is better than the movie. But yes, that's him. He also got into scuba diving off the Outer Banks and wrote a pretty good naval history of the U-boat offensive called Torpedo Junction.

#41, I made the mistake of reading a lot of the accompanying books and impedimenta, and apparently the pre-war era was more technologically advanced and artistic. The Imperial era spread a coarser, cheaper tech to places like Tatooine. And apparently the Y-wing was originally all supposed to be streamlined like it's nose section, but the bomber was unreliable enough mechanics got in the habit of leaving the skin off (it rarely flies in atmosphere anyway) so they could fix things easier. I thought that was a nice bit of backstory.

90 72 70 - what happened?

She has to have order, even if it's unstructured. Everyone has noticed that she's been anxious lately & was waiting for someone to make a mistake or just to be in the wrong place at the right time. Guess who she picked? "Forgot" my name this morning, etc....Then: the intern & I were overhauling the photo collection, & the intern was talking about a big school project tomorrow (my alma mater). Long story short, intern was talking & I got verbally smacked for it. Boss made it quite personal. Told us to do what we were doing but to not do what we were doing. I made the mistake of telling her I didn't understand. She apologized later, but only after raking my immediate boss over-the-coals for confusing me. He didn't.

114 But the boss has been really shaky lately. Usually the chain-smoking calms her, but it didn't this time. We have a big event in January that might not pull-through, & I think they've invited Kay Bailey & John C.

Her bark is meaner than her bite. None of the employees nor the board members like her. I've seen her smile while mocking them (in front of others) for her own benefit.

I'm sooo glad I'm the only archivist /researcher at this little county museum. Just feel bad b/c my immediate "boss" is my mentor from college. Fortunately, he doesn't like or trust her, either.

Moral: Choose your job wisely.

115 Sofia,

I had a similar situation. Met a guy, thought he was the one, married him, found out years later that he was a liar. Plus he became a World of Warcraft addict which made things even worse... but it was mostly the lying that pushed me over the edge. Then I ended up staying in a shit relationship because he was seriously depressed over the thought of losing me and his shrink asked me not to leave until he was ready. It totally sucked.
The only good part is that during that time while I was waiting for the shrink to tell me that he wouldn't kill himself if I left I met someone new online which has since turned into an awesome relationship.

122 90 - sorry, I had disappeared for a few minutes. I'm sorry that happened, miss 80's. Bosses can be so weird and obnoxious. My last female boss was horrific. She did the same thing you're telling me that yours did. Looking for mistakes, until I finally told her she was essentially behaving like a simpleton. (I was looking to get fired and it gave me my opportunity). So she told me to get out. And I said "thank you for saying the words" because that meant I could collect unemployment. She hated having to pay her part of the social security for fired employees. Seriously, some bosses can be wicked. I feel your pain.

It's funny, I met him online. And we were always amazing together, we like the same things, share similar interests... But the lie just ruined it all.

That and the fact that he hasn't had a job in ages. I don't need a man to support me, never did, but he's too picky.
I'm just not like that and I my father was such an example of  a man who was not afraid of work, of challenges, of starting over...

I know a few guys who have Ann fantasies, but they all revolve around tying her to in bed. I think everyone knows she is a "top" which is why the fantasies revolve around making her be anything but the top.

You idiots know NOTHING about Boss/employee relations.

A pat on the butt is normally followed by a quick nipple pinch if the relation ship is man-boss woman-employee.  And it is completely natural.

The boss pat on the ass followed by a quick pinch MAN-TO-MAN is known as the BARNEY FRANK and is usually followed by the victims employment and compensation being increased.

Saw a preview for Star Wars when I was six years old right before a Benji movie and it was like discovering a nudie book in your dads workbench for the first time. After the Benji movie was over I begged my mom to take me to see Star Wars when it came out and she said " I dunno. It seems too violent, maybe there will be a good cartoon coming out".

There's my Red Ryder moment.

There was absolutely nothing like being around to see the original Star Wars movies in the theaters. Especially “Empire Strikes Back” And the whole “I’m your father.” The theater was so still you could hear a pin drop, and then, and then, they just ended that thing with Han Solo encased in carbonite and the Luke revelation.

That there, regardless of the graphics (which were good for their time) was some epic story line. Say what you will about Lucas, because God only knows he deserves it for Jar Jar Binks, but the original Star Wars in the theaters were EVENTS.

Anyway, following up on an earlier thread today, may I ask a question about stay-at-home moms? At what point in a relationship do you think it's appropriate to broach this issue? Because I totally agree with what someone said earlier, that if you make the decision to have kids, you don't leave em with some nanny, you stay home with them (and, frankly, I very much lean towards homeschooling anyway, Freeman Hunt is basically my hero). But you don't want to bring up your future children on a first date, kinda creepy, but then again you don't want to waste six months of your life with some girl who, when she finds out how you think, runs away screaming from your caveman misogyny, either. So, yeah, thoughts? (Because, like they said in the other thread, even conservative women, which are the only kind i date, are not necessarily all agreed on this and some do very much look down on stay at home moms, so dating conservatives is no guarantee)

Whenever the "do you want kids someday" question comes up. You can follow that up with the "stay at home mom" discussion.

I was always honest with guys I dated. When the kids question would come up I would immediately discuss the fact that I believed in being a stay at home mom (at least until the youngest is in first grade).

So, umm, morons, just curious, is there a statute of limitations on sex tapes? Like, say, you’ve been divorced around, oh I’ll just pick a number randomly out of a hat, 7 years, would you still be harboring enough animosity that one day you might decide to post said sex tapes out of spite? Or by now would you have destroyed them?

That would really depend upon the circumstances upon which said tapes were recorded. If the taping was unknown to one of the participants, then the aggreived party could claim that the "discovery rule" tolled the statute of limitations. In otherwords, because they were unaware of the making of said tape, the statute of limitations was tolled until the discovery of said tape. Another argument would be that because damages is an essential claim of any suit, until the tapes were published, then no damages were inflicted and, as such, the statute of limitations did not begin until the actual publication.

Of course, if someone (say a friend) was trying to, oh, lets say gain an advantage by threating to release said tape (because "blackmail" and "extortion" are ugly words) then a cause of action would arise once the "threat" was made and the statute of limitations would commence at that point.

Of course, each state is different, this is kind of the general rules.

So, your friend has knowledge of the tapes. So no "discovery rule "exception.  However, until the tapes are published, there is no cause of action. My argument would be that until the publication occurred, no damge was sustained by the Plaintiff and, accordingly, the statute of limitation could not commence until the final element of the of the cause of action had occurred.

You could allso make an argument that the other participant to said tape had a property interest in the tape. Until the property interest was violated, the cause of action did not exist. The statute of limitations does not commence until all elements of the cause of action are present.

I only know this because of a "friend"... but usually there are different levels of clubs. The ones you find ads for tend to be the nasty places with the nasty people and everyone avoids those places like the plague (except for the nasty people of course)... the ones that are invitation only tend to be the highest quality places with high quality people and are the only places worth going to.
If your city got rated high on the scale, my guess is that there are lots of invite-only types of places.

451 My 80s crush is Deborah Foreman, from Valley Girl. Followed closely by the criminally underrated Terri Garr. And my favorite obscure 70s babe is Barbara Harris. One of the funniest actresses I've ever seen, and apparently just retired to lead a normal life right before she would've become famous. The Freaky Friday with her as the mom (and Jodie Foster as the daughter) is real good stuff.

Elizabeth, Summer can also do that thing where she sticks to the elevator ceiling, so you can definitely fit in a sixth.

The husband agrees, as he'll try anything to get his wife back, and enters the room......A few minutes later the husband cries out in terror and runs from the room. The nurse and the doctor enter to find the woman dead. "What happened?" They ask. The husband wipes a tear from his eye: "She choked!"

577 I think the kissing scene from The Quiet Man in the cemetary in the rain is one of the sexiest ever filmed. So many people will not watch an old movie for some reason. In her role as Lt. Uhura, Nichols famously kissed whiteactor William Shatneras Captain James T. Kirkin the 1968 Star Trek episode "Plato's Stepchildren". This is often referred to as the first interracial kiss on US television, however that milestone actually took place when Sammy Davis, Jr.and Nancy Sinatrakissed briefly on the variety program Movin' With Nancy in December 1967. It wasn't even the first interracial kiss on Star Trek, as Shatner had kissed an alien played by Vietnamese-French actress France Nuyenin the episode "Elaan of Troyius", which was screened earlier that season.

Got this on Wikipedia.  So it must be right.

They keep their boyfriends warm at night

I wish they all could be California
I wish they all could be California
I wish they all could be California girls

The West coast has the sunshine
And the girls all get so tanned
I dig a french bikini on Hawaii island
Dolls by a palm tree in the sand

I been all around this great big world
And I seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldn't wait to get back in the states
Back to the cutest girls in the world

626 Maybe she's not as stunningly gorgeous as the pin-ups, but all things considered, don't count out Barbara Stanwyck. She could do it all in terms of hilarious comedy, serious drama, and femme fatale action, plus when TCM had a Stanwyck day, they showed her starring in the earliest talkies in like the late 20s, and over twenty years later still smoldering on screen in the classic film noirs in the fifties, I don't know if any actress can match that.

I like shoes, but I prefer sneakers, stompy boots, hiking boots, and cute little flats. I have very few actual high heels because I'm tall enough already and my back is screwed up enough that I don't need to balance on a big tall heel and make it worse. That's why I like stompy boots as my heels. Not only do they look better, but my back likes them much better than high heel shoes.

Strangly, my son prefers baseball cleats that the plastic can be molded into sharp points so if you decide to slide in head first at home he can leave a nice imprint on your skull with them and basketball shoes that don't squeak, because, in his words, "when you are committing small felonies under the basket, you don't want to draw attention to it with your shoes."

810 Yeah, Rick Schroeder got the short end of the stick.  I guess during the time Schroeder was on the show Milch had a relapse into alcoholism.  There were no scripts for a lot of scenes, he would just show up and throw out his ideas and everyone would kind of ad lib around them.  Schroeder was kind of screwed because he really didn't have an established character to fall back on.

That's why Jimmy Smits and Kim Delaney left the show, because there was no organization at all and no scripts. I'm amazed that the show continued to do so well and that is a credit to the actors abilities in my opinion.

Chatter from every Jihadist in the  Middle East must be going about 100 MPH right now. Travel plans are being made, passports must be in order, with the correct visas. Yes, thank you, I'll be staying with relatives. Six months, yes that should give me enough time.  And no one in NY is alarmed by these new events.  In fact,  they welcome the chance to brings these criminals to justice right at the area that they destroyed.  Fools who do not know their enemy are destroyed by them.  Three thousand dead, NY you haven't seen anything yet.  NY you have challenged demons to visit and they will come and you will have no one to blame but yourselves.

I've got the first Friday night online in a month. Just been so busy. Work's been crazy. I've been stressed too, but hallelujah, it's Friday night, and the weights are coming off.

Sorry I'm late to the ONT party (yes, party - everything is a party on a Friday night) but I wanted to make sure I emerged from my lurking to offer my salutations and blessings.

I've got an email to finish yet tonight, (my best man has asked me to critique his latest short short story (do they still call them such, or is flash fiction the more popular term?) for publication submission, and that mother fucker done gone and made it about him and me, and our marriages, (his 15 years ago, mine 2 years), and friendship, and Christmas, and I had tears in my eyes at my first re-read) so I can't promise as to my devout attention here, but my longevity should suffice as I drink coffee with whiskey as a side to my Carling Lager, of which my fridge still has at least 18 left.

And I just wanted to say that you all are a blessed crew here. I am thankful for this place, and for all of you.

Cheers!

858 Was it only a coincidence that all-American McDonald's has seen some of its strongest sales in foreign countries where individual freedoms have traditionally been in short supply? That question appeared in an essay I wrote called "Would Jesus Eat at McDonald's?" A rejoinder to the professor's anti-McDonald's essay, it noted that some at the seminary and parent Presbyterian Church (USA) have in recent years unfairly Condemned Israel and rallied behind the Palestinian "cause." It's all part of a peculiar postmodern and post-Soviet worldview that has become increasingly popular over the past twenty years in many colleges and seminaries. It's a hybrid of Christianity, Marxism, and Edward Said.

From AT article. By the way, Jesus would eat at McDonald's, and he thinks you are a jerk(lefties).

The seals on the back of a dollar bill include 13 steps on the pyramid, 13 stars above the eagle’s head, 13 war arrows in the eagle’s claw and 13 leaves on the olive branch. So far there’s been no evidence tying these long-ago design decisions to the present economic situation.

Woodrow Wilson considered 13 his lucky number, though his experience didn’t support such faith. He arrived in Normandy, France on Friday, Dec. 13, 1918, for peace talks, only to return with a treaty he couldn’t get Congress to sign. (The ship’s crew wanted to dock the next day due to superstitions.) He toured the United States to rally support for the treaty, and while traveling, suffered a near-fatal stroke.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt would not travel on the 13th day of any month and would never host 13 guests at a meal. Napoleon and Herbert Hoover were also triskaidekaphobic.

And speaking about Emily, the last episode of Newhart with innkeeper Bob waking up in bed with Emily of The Bob Newhart Show in the bedroom set was great. A shot at the Dallas dream episode crap; a homage to his former show and a cameo by his wonderful co-star; and praise for his Newhart wife's boobs that he had been "dreaming" about ("You know, Emily, you should wear sweaters more often.") made it perfect.
