| Stargate Universe: Time Discussion ThreadOur weekly SGU thread. Enjoy. ![]() An audience of predominantly middle aged women gathered the weekend of Nov. 6-8 at the Los Angeles Marriott at LAX for Creation Entertainment’s Official Stargate SG-1/Atlantis Convention for a chance to melt at the sight of the Beatles of Stargate — hotties Michael Shanks, Joe Flanigan, Ben Browder, and perhaps the Ringo of the group, Paul McGillion. [...] Photo-ops with the actors were a huge big deal. Eavesdropping on the fans, there was no talk of alien races, time travel dilemmas or arguments about quantum physics, just gleeful exclamations of: “Oh my God, Ben (Browder) is such a hunk!”, “Joe (Flanigan) was sooo nice!”, “Michael (Shanks) hugged me!” This is a sci-fi convention??? But it’s more than just the hot guys that bring these women back year after year. One new fan who just started watching Stargate SG-1 reruns a few months ago told Michael Shanks she watches marathons of the show with her kids for hours and hours, forgetting everything else. She gushed, “You guys become part of my family. It was pivotal for us to experience that, go on journeys with you. Thank you very much!” To which Shanks replied “Thank you for sipping of the Stargate Kool-Aid.”I ran into Flanigan a few times in Malibu. Nice guy. I still didn't watch much Atlantis, though. Comments1
The problem with Atlantis was that they wrote themselves into a corner with the Wraith in the first episode and all the things we learned about them after just seemed to be retcon to cover for their shittiness as a main villain.
That being said, Rodney McKay is still my favorite Stargate character of all-time. Posted by: Shivv at November 13, 2009 08:47 PM (00mcl) 2

Never watched Stargate, save for the occasional glance at SciFi or SyFy or whatever the hell they're called these days.
Should have I been watching that instead of surfing the Web for Skinemax clips? Posted by: Kratos (on the back of Gaia, scaling Mt Olympus) at November 13, 2009 08:55 PM (otlXg) Posted by: somejoe at November 13, 2009 08:55 PM (SSWdi) 6

I don't hate this show, it just needs to be more then a Voyager/Lost in Space redo and I kinda miss the SG formula of having a big baddie. Can they find some sapiants? I actually like the cast but for Lou Diamond Philips character.

I watch on Hulu so the next episode isn't up yet.
I never got around to watching the other Stargate shows. I didn't avoid them, I just didn't get around to it. I watched all the episodes in this new series so far and some of the things really annoyed me and I expected to dislike it a whole lot. There are still things that annoy me. But! I'm starting to like other parts of it and starting to like some of the characters and starting to like the various dilemmas they are in. More importantly, the end of the last episode (not this one) seemed to be the end of a particular narrative arc that *felt* almost like a pilot... like we can get on with it now because the set up is complete and the rules are now all known. It seems to me that it's not until the end of the last episode that the commander actually took command. So what I'm expecting when I see *this* episode is a new, more purposeful attitude among the crew. Posted by: Synova at November 13, 2009 09:30 PM (NTu5Z) 20
"Will Eli escape the Friend Zone this week?"
Heh. You know... guys like that tend to glom onto the impossible and ignore what is right in front of them. It's masochism or something. How about Eli and that excessively chesty female soldier? Odd couple, sure. But I can see it. Posted by: Synova at November 13, 2009 09:33 PM (NTu5Z) 21

Next week on Stargate: Universe. Episode title: Rabbit A female crew member spends 35 minutes of the show in the bathroom awaiting the results of a pregnancy test. Is she or isn't she? Unforunately, an environmental leak in the hull of the ship compromised the test kit which now needs additional Sodium Chloride to function properly. Fortunately the ship has jumped to a planet that contains Sodium Chloride in the topsoil and the team must brave rockslides and a giant ape who throws barrels to locate it before the ship jumps again.
Seriously if I was still watching this show (thank god I'm not) I'd be demanding that they explain how the alien spaceship took them to a planet with birth control, cause they couldn't have been that well stocked for evacuation of the military/science base. Else by season 2, all the female cast members must be preggers. Goddamn soccer moms are ruining science fiction. Posted by: Entropy at November 14, 2009 12:44 AM (cok/k) 50

Read to mean: Characters are incidental. As a hopeful writer I DESPISE this view of most any fiction. I don't watch/read fiction to invest in things or abstract concepts I do so because I want to care about the people in it. Posted by: Rodney at November 14, 2009 01:38 AM (6WxDr) 55
It was a plot that every SF show has to do eventually. Everybody dies horribly and says stuff they might otherwise never get out but it isn't the end of the series because they get a time travel do over. They all do it, guaranteed. The trick is what you do with it. I thought they got some good performance out of this and and added some good backstory to some of the characters.
As for the birth control issue, I wouldn't be surprised if long-term implants are standard issue for off-world personnel. The only ones who wouldn't have been covered are Chloe and the Ming Na character, who isn't likely to get knocked up accidentally, IYKWIMAITYD. I expect Chloe can focus her powers of annoyingness to spermicidal effect. The fade to black without perfect resolution was good in two ways. It gives the ending more tension and it gives more time for story instead of having time wasted on everyone standing around saying, "Gosh, we sure dodged a bullet that time but we're still stuck on this stinky old ship." Some plots are obligatory. The writers just cannot resist. Take the 'our heroes have been shrunk down teeny-tiny' plot. At least on Farscape, when they did that one, they had one of the characters going insane trying to figure if it was an illusion because it could be real for a variety of reasons. It was a great moment of breaking the conventions of cliche. Posted by: epobirs at November 14, 2009 01:54 AM (p9DCO) 56
Fuck this show just gets worse every week.
Dear SciFi, When you are the SCIFI CHANNEL and you are showing a SCIFI show having the geek character go directly into the "friend zone" EVEN WHEN HE IS INHABITING THE BODY OF A 6'4 SOLID MUSCLE SOLDIER is a bad bad idea. Your viewers are always going to identify with a character... and it ain't the jerk character that is mercilessly having sex with every vaginal canal on the spaceship. Love, -Everyone I was totally supportive of the concept of SG-U, and taking the series in a new direction-- 100% behind that. But last week's episode was 30 minutes of people talking about their feelings. Is this lifetime? As for the pregnancy thing, the dropping out of FTL travel (and going back into it) might disrupt the body enough to prevent pregnancy. Posted by: Sir Elliot at November 14, 2009 02:27 AM (DUNS7) 57

I only saw one or two episodes of Sg: Atlantis. Last night, I caught a brief scene, and it appeared Atlantis was flying through the galaxy. WTF? Did they learn how to fly the city around like a spaceship? And it appeared someone was concerned with lack of power. Lack of power? You're flying a city around. Power is not a problem. So. Is that show off the air? If so, I think I know why. Posted by: You're Gonna Need a Montage (rdb) at November 14, 2009 07:26 AM (a/B2/) 64

I like this new style of approach for the Stargate (no pun intended) "Universe". And as for all the posts saying things that imply that only sci-fi shows that EVERY week have COMPLETLEY unrealistic storylines (and I don't mean because there aren't really stargates all over the Milky Way) and unrealistic characters with their predictable lines and "Formula" personalities can only ever be the really COOL sci-fi type shows that are enjoyable to watch, that tells me none of you have ever actually read some Joseph Campbell, R.A. Lafferty, C.M. Kornbluth, James Tiptree Jr., John Varley, Harlen Ellison...if you know none of these names my point is made, and your sweeping knowledge of GREAT Sciece Fiction is probably limited to Star Trek's various incarnations, the original V & Buck Rogers etc. And all the complaining of, "booo, all the dialogue and everything...", OR "how characters actually feel, how boooring..." Well, like I wrote, now after reading all these posts I'm no longer wondering why I have never gotten along with anyone I met that said they liked some of the same sci-fi- shows and movies I did...I'm guessing because most Sci-Fi "FANS" think the genre started only after television was invented. In fact, why am I still even writing here? As no-one who comes here will even understand why I'm irrated with the comments and why I actually think S.G.U. is one of the most engaging, interesting sci-fi show to come out since the new B.S.G. and before that...well, there wasn't really anything. Stargate SG-1 wa okay maybe every tenth episode or so when a good writer would get ahold of it...but all those shows were just filler for me when I wasn't reading a BOOK. With like, long conversations between characters, intricately thoughtout storylins with plenty of food for thought, stuff that translates ultimatly, when you THINK on it, (the Story) to our own human condition and usually has some underlying message to think about, hidden inside a really cool alien invasion, body snatching story-line that when done well is really entertaining in a completly shALLOW WAY AND ALSO AT THE SAME TIME COMPLETLEY THOUGHT PROVOKING WAY, A 50/50 MIX. I'M SO PISSED NOW........................................................................ I'll keep watching this series because I need my sci-fi fix, but what a crap load of writing so far.
They rehashed the "let's" make a video diary because we are going to die thing. Now they rehashed the time travel/gate/solar flair thing. And for the love of God, can these episodes get any more plodding? And so far this reminds me of a fatal flaw that plagued SG-Atlantis. They had this great big city, but they seldom devoted any air-time to actually exploring it. Now we have this obviously huge ship, but once again, no one seems to be exploring it.... Hopefully the writing gets better and soon. Posted by: theMachiavellian at November 14, 2009 10:48 PM (5f37Q) 75

When I first heard about the premise of this show, I thought it could be interesting. But so far, it's been relegated to the "I'm drunk and there's nothing on" show. If this is supposed to be more realistic, a group of random people put in a life or death situation, and all they want to do is cry and bitch about their feelings, then humanity is officially fucked (which Obama's Administration, response to the Ft. Hood shooting, etc. lead me to the same conclusion). I thought this episode was better than the some earlier ones, but really, the only reason I'm going to keep watching it, if I get around to it, is because it's Stargate. At least early on, the new BSG (I missed the first series due to being a little young at the time, so I can't speak to that) seemed to more realistically deal with the despair and survival situation--as in grow some fucking balls, man the fuck up (or, to not make this a gender issue, soldier up, or whatever the proper saying might be), and at least pretend like your life and the life of those around you are on the line, this isn't fucking Oprah or Dr. Phil. Maybe these Hollywood types should be required to watch Band of Brothers or something similar based on real events before they write crap like this. Otherwise, God help us if we don't deploy a shrink to ask how everyone feels should it ever come to this. Posted by: aggiebc at November 15, 2009 04:48 AM (T8TuL) 77
And Claudia Black is Hot?!? That horse face and mouth, if her mouth got near my junk I would fear for it still being there after! All those teeth! Jaws has nothin' on her. Flat as Flatland. And an ass that slants toward her pelvis, an almost inverted anatomy back there. Her legs go slant out about 40 degrees outward at the knees when standing straight. Yeah I dream about that at night...and wake up screaming grabbing at my junk to make sure it hasn't been horse knashed off!!! Now that First Sg-1 M.I.L.F. Doctor? - I'll nurse off that anytime. Even Dr. Weir is hotter than the "Black", she really is hot. And probably could teach some good stuff... That one episode of Atlantis where Flannigan & The Scottish Guy get hooked up on that planet of the dead zombies with the quartet of the only ALL FEMALE marine team in the Pegasus Galaxy? WOOOOO DAMN!!!That one is the "Julia" nerd chick hokkin' up with Fargo on Eureka. Very Nice. Wow, all this flak. It's only been like what? 4 or 5 episodes? For something that's intended to be an ongoing series and not a set few shows like a mini-series, You can't just jump in there to the (metaphorically) middle of the book. Give it a chance - It's not like this is Star Trek Enterprise. A little setting up of the whole mood and feel of the show is nesccary, and with so many characters that seem that they will have a lot (over time) of screen time, well I personally want to know a little about their back-stories. I think that covers the "plodding" part. And yeah, when I realized this what a time travel type episode I winced a little, always a iffy area to write with, but it wasn't bad, and I thought it was actually a bit of a nod to the SG-1 Series Super Sucess Story when they included the 'Solar Flare Time Shift' thing, like maybe even though this one is supposed to be a more serious/realistic type show they still are willing to play around in the knowingly sooo over the top storylines of the previous incarnations...that's just my take. And not exploring the ship yet? It's like a zillion square feet, and they are just trying to make their food & water last...I'm sure the writers have some really cool stuff alraedy planned out about what will be found around the ship, technologies etc. Maybe even a sealed off section with dead ancients and a whole story there to go with it, maybe the original occupants of Destiny and what ever happened to 'em? The possibilities are endless, as a wanna be writer myself, I wouldn't just jump right into what could be possibly some of the best stuff/reveals of the series in the first five episodes. Come on. Also F*#K political comparisons to this show, I watch stuff like this to ESCAPE ALL THAT DEPRESSING SHIT ANYWAY. Quote: "This one was better than eariler ones..." you mean the other, what, five or six or whatever? SG-1 was on FOR 9 or 10 YEARS, not weeks. Like I said b4, give it a chance. And whether anyone wants to admit it or not, they would be messing themselves in the same situation as the people on the show and crying for their mommies...I think these fictional people are handling possibly being away from everything they ever knew or loved pretty well, a little praying when you think your 10,000 year old ship is going to take a header into a star is a little waranted I think. Damn, when the close-mindedness I think people can have will no longer suprise me...well, I dont have enough words. I'm outta here, 4 good. Been a pleasere. (That was I think qualifying as a feeling, guess I'm a cry baby) Posted by: Not wondering why I don't get along w/any other sci-fi fans anymore... at November 15, 2009 11:00 AM (w6U7D) 79
I'll probably keep watching, but the only character I really like is Rush, and the only ones I sort of like are TJ and Eli. It's sort of like the new Star Wars movies... I'm watching for what this is rather than any of the actual content, and hoping that something good will make an appearance.

Thanks "Rodney", for being a voice of reason in a Cacophony of idocy.
Cacophony (ca·coph·o·ny [kə kóffənee](plural ca·coph·o·nies) n: 1. unpleasant noise: an unpleasant combination of loud, often jarring, sounds. 2. use of jarring sounds: the use of harsh unpleasant sounds in language, e.g. for literary effect. __________________________________________________________ Also one more thing, they didn't kill off ANYBODY, the whole episode was one big do-over in the end. P.S. (post script) - The 'Solar Flare Time Travel?Time Shift' thing: 1. The SG-1 Episode "1969", 'nuff said there. 2. The SG-1 Episode where Tilc' & McGyver lived the same day over & over for about a year b'cause of that ancient machine utilizing the same solar flare thing on a planet orbiting an unstable star throwing off massive flares continually. 3. Probably at least one other episode w/same premis. And of course "Continuim". They ripped themselves off way b4 "Universe" ever did. Like I said b4, they were probably trying to cement themselves firmly/respectivly w/the SG-1 & Atlantis universe Fans with an easily recocnizable plot mechanism for any die hard fans to appreciate the irony of the use of it & to think the fans would realize this and not think they just couldn't come up with anything else. You think? Totally off subject: Best SG-1 Episode EVER: "200". Posted by: Not wondering why I don't get along w/any other sci-fi fans anymore... at November 19, 2009 08:54 PM (w6U7D) 92
