We have seen how Democrats prize Republican votes in the House and Senate. The lack of a handful of votes to provide the fig leaf of bipartisanship has stopped what should have been a liberal juggernaut in the legislature. So sure, if we get a RINO Republican elected in Connecticut, we get one step closer to a majority. However, the vote that was once cast by Dodd will have far more meaning, power, and importance for Dems trying to get their agenda enacted.

Today, more than ever, it is important that the Republican party be ideologically solid so that the Democrats find no cover for what they are doing. If that means we give up a seat in a blue state, so be it.

Longtime lurker - and CT resident.  CT isn't as true-blue as it used to be. There are pockets of conservatism that are growing everyday.  In my small town we recently elected a full Republican ticket in the recent town elections. Same thing happened in a neighboring town. It happened all over the state.

That's how it starts.

We have a Republican Governor, though Jodi Rell announced her plans to retire after her current term is over. Given the state of things with Dodd - and the fact that Obama's coattails have gotten very short in the past few months - it's possible that not only will CT keep a Republican in the Governor's chair but we may pick up a Republican Senator in 2010 as well.

I find conservatives around me nearly everyday lately. People are fed up and maybe are finally realizing that the Democrats have been in control of the Federal government since 2006...and they don't like what has happened in that time.

This is how revolts get started....

17 I agree with you 100% here.  The country didn't just snap one day and decide to embrace totalitarian ideologies.  It was a gradual process that has brought us to our current level of insanity.  It will be a gradual process to move us back to a more reasonable state, particularly in states like Connecticut.   There are rinos (McCain) and then there are RINOs (Dede) and the difference between them, and the ability to discriminate between the two types is critical in this effort.  Some Republicans may feel the need to hold their noses as they vote, but it is better than the alternative.

One thing to focus on is that in a no bs political pandering way: The fight isn't between Democrats and Republicans, it's between Socialism and Republicanism.  Think of rinos as the methadone treatment for the socialist addiction.

18 I would say go for the staunchest conservative in the primary.  Wasn't that the strategy the "pragmatists" advocated?  Dodd is odious and this is a good chance.  Don't go squishy until you have to.  If Simmons is the nominee, fine then.  Hold your nose and vote for him in the general election.

There are several blue states that may actually produce Republicans. In addition to Connecticut, in Deleware, Mike Castle is leading Beau (Son of Sheriff Joe) Biden. In Illinois, Congressman Mike Kirk is either ahead or tied with his leading Democratic contenders. Now mind you, it appears Blago is goingon trial in the fall of 2010, so that may help Kirk. Adding those to Connecticut, you have 3 potential R pick-ups in Blue States.

Ayotte leads in New Hampshire, so there is a chance Republicans can retain the seat in New Hampshire. Portman may pull it out in Ohio and Blunt may hold on in Missiouri. Add that to the 4 Democrats in the most trouble (Bennett in Colorado, Lincoln in Akransas, Reid in Neveda and Spector in Penn.) and you can see a net Republican pick-up of 7 if all goes well. That would make the Senate 53 Democrats, 47 Republicans. Considering Joe Liebermann is a wild card and Harry Bryd has health issues and you can see where post 2010 it gets very difficult for "the One" to get things through.

McMahon may be a decent candidate in that she's self-funding due to having the coffers of the WWE at her disposal and has name recognition, but she'll be polarizing because her husband Vince and her company are habitually controversial.  I don't want that to undercut the possibility of removing Dodd from DC since he's such a constant danger to the economy.  

Simmons can get a pass on RINO tendencies as long as he's willing to play ball with the caucus and not go out of his way to stick a thumb in the eye of conservatives and the party base like Specter did.


A lot of the RINO-hunting is based in how a particular politician has angered the base and the composition of the state or district that sent them.  Graham and McCain garner more outrage than the Maine Sisters for the most part because Maine is deep blue while South Carolina and Arizona are very red states and should be able to support true conservative Senators rather than a pair of media whores who regularly make names for themselves by undercutting the base.

I'm with you on the squish factor, but there are two sides to that coin, as we've seen recently.  Party affiliation can be used to squish back, as the health-care debate has so recently illustrated.  Pols then have the choice to respond (Maine), leave the party (Pennsylvania), or face ruin (NY-23).  I would, at the end of the day, rather have a Pol that is nominally more influenced by conservative criticism, than the socialist sort. 

There are always going to be disputes, but changing the base line of argumentation is what the left did so well to stick us in the mess we're in now, and what the right needs to do to effect a lasting ideological victory that out lives the passions of any given election cycle.  There will be embarrassing drunken uncles at the party, but they are part of the long term solution, as annoying as it is right now.

133 A word about Rob Simmons, from one who's familiar with his record:  definitely not a RINO in the Scozzafava sense.  A solid fiscal conservative & social moderate, he's pretty much the slightly nerdier ex-Army/ex-CIA spook version of Rudy Giuliani (a lot nicer in person, too).  Were it not for the colossal cockups of the 2nd Bush term, neither he nor Shays nor Nancy Johnson would be out of a job in the first place.  He lost reelection in 2006 by a margin of EIGHTY-THREE VOTES...talk about a ballbuster.

Lifetime ACU rating is 53.3, but he loses almost all his points on predictably blue-state social issues like abortion, not on fiscal ones.  He was always the most conservative of CT's three GOP representatives (Shays, Johnson, Simmons).

He is without a doubt our best candidate for Senate: well-liked, well-known, socially moderate enough for his state, fiscally conservative enough for the base.

I live here in CT.  Rob Simmons is not quite a RINO.  Yeah he's not Pro-Life, but he is pro-business, believes in less gov't, less taxes, is pro-gun (worked for CIA and is a veteran) and recently changed his stance on cap and trade (he's now against it).  I know we're part of New England, but Simmons is no Lincoln Chafee.  Simmons deserves national support.  IMHO.

I don't see Hoffman winning under even the best of circumstances.  I just look at the whole mess as reinforcing that Hoffman would have won with true Republican support as well as a good reason for the NY Republicans to make Scuzzy into a pariah.

The closer he gets in any counting of the vote here, be it in absentee ballots or a recount, the more momentum he gets going into 2010 and the more the Dems' big victory this year loses a lot of shine.

I live in a state that will be abortion on demand until the end of time. We can't even get a parental notification for minors law passed here, in spite of *three* rewrites of the bill to allow for minors emancipation should it be incestuous and to expunge any possible language construed as anti-abortion or religious. Should the judicial monstrosity of Roe be overturned as it should be, I can easily see entrepreneurs going to Needles or Baker or Truckee (I-10, I-15, I-80) an setting up 24 hour abortion mills on the CA state line, in partnership with bus companies. So I have to let that issue go.

Not true, which is why I didn't vote for McCain. Thanks to McCain losing, we have a socialist President, a socialist Speaker, and a socialist Senate Majority Leader, and they can't get a God-damn thing passed because most representatives are self interested and the Democrat rank-and-file know that it'll be their necks when the Pelosi-Reid-Obama agenda takes the country to hell. If McCain was President, you'd have a liberal Congress that would feel safe in not simply pushing for radical changes, but safe in voting for them. Sure, they wouldn't be as radical changes as are being proposed now, but they would take this country further in the wrong direction, and your average voter wouldn't know who to blame. In the end, the best you could say about McCain is that it wouldn't be so bad at this moment. But you might be stuck with him for an extra four years, or maybe he would get voted out in 2012 for President Hillary or Obama anyway. So, all that a vote for McCain could have done is hobbled the development of the Republican party for four or eight years.

Have bad things been done under this President? Absolutely. However, there is revulsion at his practices and policies, and that revulsion is directed in the proper place. The pendulum is swinging, and because McCain was not elected, it's going to swing back hard, as long as we let it and stop trying to preemptively compromise.

Living in Connecticut... it is considered a rich state because of the Fairfield County Area. where many rich live.  A lot of us are middle class and a lot are welfare people.   I hear many times that there are signs down the south and in Puerto Rico telling them to come up to Connecticut for the most generous welfare.  Welfare, immigrants (legal and illegal) get better treatment than the average citizen.

It is a blue state because of the rich liberals, the welfare group, and some middle class people (those who are very pro-union) who still think that  the democratic party is still for the helping the everyday middle class people and not the leftist party it is now.
