A couple of Veterans Day notes

I have adopted a tradition of my Dad's (two tours in Vietnam) for Veterans Day. He works half a day because he is not a State or other government employee who gets a free day off, and then he heads to a watering hole because he earned the right. So as my last official act today a couple of links.

Mike Royko on the same sentiment as my old man

Warrior Legacy Foundation has adopted the ass-kicking "Warrior Song" as our Fight Song, and also announces a new campaign with country music stars, and other sports and entertainment types called "When they come back, we give back".

Now I will don my "Don't be a DouChe' shirt, my Blackwater hat and am off to aggravate the lefties in my trendy Alexandria neighborhood.

Thanks to all who have served and all who support them. I'll add this collection of dogs welcoming their owners home from the war.

2 happy Veterans Day to all ....

for a quick laugh:

obama screwed up the Veterans Day unknown soldier ceremony.....

He's got his hand over his heart, EVERYONE else in the military is saluting, as is appropriate.

he did it several times, and there is a general standign beside him saluting too - as is everyone in teh background, even the drummers..
what a douchebag.

Just a fucking good writer, smartass, and lush. Tip one for Billy Goat Tavern.

5 There is an old graveyard that I drive past every day and I always stop to put a flag and flowers on the graves of the vets.  The nice thing?  Usually there's already something there and the tombstones and surrounding areas have been cleaned.

Thank you.  Thank you.  Thank you to everyone who has served.  I am not worthy of such men and women.

6 Thanks for that post, Uncle Jimbo.  I've always been a Mike Royko fan.  I remember when I was in middle school, he had a column that exposed Dan Rather for the douchebag he was (a story about how he stiffed a cabbie).  I was so indignant when I read it, I sent Mike a letter thanking him for standing up for the little guy and vowing never to watch Dan Rather again.  I disliked Rather from that point on.

I'm pregnant, so I can't drink.  Can someone throw one (or more) back for me in their honor?  Any takers?

8 I went to my Veterans Day High School yesterday, honoring all Vets. Even those who did not attend the school. Very moving..  They even brought out the high school senior class to sit among us veterans, so we could interact with them.  Respect is what we had for each other.

Thanks Uncle - I am loathe to point out that the top-of-the-fold front page headline in the Sacramento Bee today is a lengthy James Risen NYT article about Blackwater employees possibly bribing Iraqi officials to possibly cover-up a shooting that may or may not have even taken place.

On Veteran's Day. Front Page. Above the Fold.

Disgraceful beyond words, but par for the course in the Bee.

22 Regardless of how high his office, no politician who had the opportunity to serve in the military, but didn’t, will be allowed to make a patriotic speech, appear on TV, or poke his nose out of his office for the entire day.

But there were television cameras!

23 I could comment all day about what happened for two hours at my Veterans Day HS ceremony.  Suffice to say, only one local TV station mentioned it, and panned the audience, for 10 seconds, just before the sports news. PS. this a inner city school, nowhere near the county line. I must admit, that this is not a city school, but a parochial school.  Most kids have a small help as to the tuition as I found out.

But there are all those great patriots who didn't serve - you know like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, and Sean Hannity (I'd argue W. but who has the time.  Fortunately there are those who do serve (Markos and Jeremiah Wright for example.  Cheers (and yeah, you're welcome).

26 Thanks Jimbo, I'm throwing one or three back in my front swing, watching over a mess of ribs I'm smoking. Just returned from my oldest grand daughter's school where they had a Veteran's Day celebration. They built a wall out of paper bricks with all of the kid's veteran relatives names on each brick.  It was a long wall in the gym, almost half the way down and about five feet high.

They had invited all of the living vets to come so I showed up. The Principle explained the celebration and showed some slides and gave a real good speech aimed at the kids and what the day was and why we should celebrate and honor it. Then she asked all the vets that had come to come to the middle of the gym floor. She introduced us (there were six of us ) and then before she could hardly finish, all of the kids started clapping and shouting.

It was a fine morning.

It's worth remembering, too, that for our friends in Britain, Canada, Australia, NZ, and elsewhere in the Commonwealth (and in South Africa, too), today is Armistice Day, when on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the guns fell silent on the Western Front:

In Flanders Fields, the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row ...
