The Sullivan thread is busted. Comments have disappeared, before that, boxes disappeared, before that greyness. They came for my white space, but I liked grey, so I did nothing. Then they came for the comment boxes, but I did not need boudaries, so I did nothing. They came for the comments, but I was not on the thread, so I did nothing. Hasan should be acquitted. He did it in Texas, which is full of dangerous Creationists and Teabaggers. I'll bet they had Glen Beck on the tv in the room, that would have caused me to go berserk, but guns scare me. Janet Napolitano told us that returning soldiers are the biggest threat to our security and are just itching to kill masses of people. Hasan was protecting us from them you see, how many lives did he save by offing those ticking time bombs. Hasan is a DOCTOR, a SCIENTIST, so he's an EXPERT. First the FBI found out, then they punted to DCIS. Then DCIS assigned an investigator, who did a little looking and decided that an Army major contacting a radical imam was AOK, at which point he shrugged and filed it away. I propose a new rule: if they're in contact with the enemy, it's a problem. Hokay?

True Story,
Amelia was one hot lady, so when she taxied up to the limo to take me to a convention stop, I just had to tip my hat to her. She said "thanks for the reminder to check the plugs!" I tried to ask her about the comment while we finished a little crop-dusting gig she agreed to for our flight. Never found out the answer. But I bought her a really cool compass for her birthday. I was listening to a generic, top of the hour news feed from CBS just a few days ago, and as they prattled off misleading headlines, they actually played some wankfagger "expert" saying that the funemployment number increasing to 10.2% was a sign of good times because (I shit you not) the economy is booming so strongly now that lots of people are looking for work, so that makes the unemployment number look higher. Yeah, the one problem with the game is that it isn't more of a straight-forward shooter rather than an RPG in shooter's clothing. You kind of already have to be into RPGs to get into Fallout 3. Then again, the game sold me upon entering the subways to get into DC proper, or even breaking into the supermarket for the first survival guide mission, because at that point, it became more of a kill-fest with head explosions a-go-go than the first few missions would seem to indicate. That, and the game allows you to act like a total rat bastard that does things like selling an entire colony of children into slavery or nuking a small town so you can get an apartment (basically). #166 George Orwell The problem is that, as Usual, the Liberals do know understand the lessons of history. In the Great Depression, the money value was decreased, called deflation. Now obama is trying for the reverse, called of course inflation. His whole crazy idea is that inflation would be so huge, so as to wipe out the Federal debt in no time flat. Using cheap, newly printed dollars to wipe out the savings accounts of the recently retired filthy rich people.

PJ O'Rourke had the best chapter title on this in his book "All the Troubles in the World" : Just Enough of Me, Way Too Much of You
Best book O'Rourke ever wrote. Did a wonderful job of deconstructing Global Warming by pointing out that everyone claiming global warming was going to melt the ice caps had, in the early and mid 70s, been claiming that Global Cooling was going to give us a new ice age. SYDNEY — In the world of fiddler crabs, the best form of protection for females is, apparently, having sex with the neighbors, according to an Australian study published Wednesday. Researchers from The Australian National University in Canberra found male fiddler crabs will happily defend a nearby female against intruders – partly because the females will dole out sex in return. Swapping sex for favors is not unheard of in the animal kingdom. Antarctica's Adelie penguins exchange sex for highly coveted stones used for nest building. Another reason the crabs might help fight off their neighbors' intruders is to keep a familiar comrade next door. Even for crabs, sometimes it's a case of "better the devil you know than the devil you don't." Posted by: sickinmass at November 10, 2009 11:36 PM (rYWEB) 269

Sam Adams,
Sales tax in LA city is 9.75% although 1% of that is allegedly temporary. (Yeah, right. No such thing as a temporary tax.) I don't know what prop taxes are, but they're the only taxes that are actually pretty low -- but only because of Prop 13. The liberals have been trying to repeal that since it passed, but no one will allow it. I admit I do like that the Onondaga County NY clothing tax is only 4% while sales tax is 8%. And when I was in NYC last, there was no sales tax on clothes that cost less than $100. Posted by: wherestherum at November 10, 2009 11:51 PM (GZnia) 323

IOUs, even the precious "little guy" paying more in state income tax, more user fees, more regs, and I just read where you can now find plain old white guys hanging around Home Depot and the like looking for day labor.
I honestly think that if something major happens in china, like an economic collapse(which i think will happen in the next ten years for various reasons), California will fall into an "escape from LA" scenario. Cali's rise corrisponds with a rise in Asia, if one of the engines of asia collapses, get ready for violence and mass migration. Posted by: Ben at November 10, 2009 11:52 PM (bftbi) 325

People do the two or three or even 4 hour commutes from out in the boonies because that's where the homes are cheaper. No one can afford to live in LA or OC. Mother-in-law is a dyed in the wool liberal... and even she is talking
about leaving the state now she's retired. If you knew her, that is
just... wow.
Yeah, but her voting patterns won't change. That's the infuriating part. She'll move to Nevada or Texas, or some other low-tax state and vote for every tax increase and every liberal politician on the ballot, every time. And then 20 years later, if she's still around, she'll be wondering how the state became an expensive, crime-ridden hellhole like the one she left. It will absolutely not occur to her to connect her voting to the state's decline. If you try to explain it to her, she will not understand. Liberals typically do not see past the noses on their face. I used to sell Real Estate, and I knew that it was a matter of time before the bubble burst. Property values became too elevated. First, it was the fault of the bank appraisers, then the county tax appraiser caught on and started inflating the value of homes for tax revenue. NO WAY, is an 1100 sq. ft. home in LA, or NYC worth what they sell for. I watched HGTV too, and I couldn't believe flippers were buying 1100 sq. ft. homes for $300 plus. I was a Liberal until I was mugged by reality.
Same here. My wakeup call was my first job out of school when I moved to the LA basin from cozy insular rural northern NY where a liberalistic attitude isn't necessarily fatal as it can be in LA. LA is harsh. Lose your edge or screw up one little bit and its very easy to get dead there even minding your own business. I've had a serious physical avoidance thing for large urban areas for the past 30 years or so after that experience. Even Miami, which isn't "large" by urban standards, is normally on my "avoid if possible" list. I prefer places where I can walk out on the back porch, piss on the lawn at any time of the day or night, and not have a SWAT team descend on me for indecent exposure cuz some nosy neighbor was watching me through a telescope. I can see so much in that photo of Barry. His mother represents the white imperial repressive system that he so desperately wants to escape from. On the other side of the fence, somewhere out there, are the dreams of his father. A mostly absent African man who understands the struggle of colonial bondage, the struggle that is Islam, and the futility of resisting the allure of the the white man's world. It is this fence that separates two worlds. And it it Barack Obama that sits astride with all eyes upon him. I love Wicked! It's my absolute favorite Broadway musical. I have the whole soundtrack memorized and I saw the play 3 times, once in NYC and twice in LA. It's a spectacular show. I went in not sure if I should believe the hype, but it totally lives up to its hype. It's beautifully written in terms of the dialogue, the sets are amazing, the costumes are fabulous and the attention to detail is awesome. The NYC was was the best, imo, but I enjoyed it every time I saw it. And get rid of any preconceived notions of its relation to the Wizard of Oz. It really only vaguely references any of it. Wicked: I dunno. Big spectacle, funny script, great production, charismatic actors, no doubt. But the actual music? My problem with all these modern musicals is that it's all about loud, powerful singing, which is impressive in a sort of american idol way i suppose, but there is no melody or real memorable quality. like, they're all interchangeable, you can put in any lyrics and generic music and just belt it out. back in the old days, when i walked to school uphill both ways, there actually were terrific songs in musicals that could become radio hits on their own without the big production. obviously all the great musicals of the golden age (easter parade, meet me in st.louis, etc), somewhat later classics like My Fair Lady which I just watched again two days ago and still blows me away, and then probably the last one like that was Grease, maybe, and then if you like that sorta thing the andrew loyd webber garbage (i do not like that sort of thing). i know i'm in the minority on wicked, lots of people love it, i just don't get the appeal of that music. you kids these days and your ear-bleeding pop!

I love My Fair Lady. I only wish I could have seen it on stage with Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews. I much prefer Julie Andrews' singing than Marnie Noxon (sp?) the lady who dubbed Audrey Hepburn in the movie. The only Andrew Llyod Weber play I like is Phantom of the Opera. I also enjoyed seeing The Producers on stage when it was on tour. Martin Short played Bloom much better than Broderick in my opinion, but Jason Alexander just can't compete with Nathan Lane. I love and adore Nathan Lane. Posted by: wherestherum at November 11, 2009 01:16 AM (GZnia) 487

I just watched the movie Australia. Dumb and predictable, really didn't want to like it, but darn, I got suckered in. And I hate Nicole Kidman. And romanticizing aboriginal 'wisdom' really makes me want to club seals. But some of those visuals...
WTR, in one drama class the teacher didn't even bother with subtle propaganda and just had us watch a movie about the Andrew Shepard death (the inspiration for our brand new thought crime laws, yay), full of lies and half-truths, of course. But, in general, I actually really liked drama class because some friends and I always partnered up for the improv exercises and we got to do really silly, stupid things. Also, just want to give a thank you to whichever moronette it was, I don't remember, who recommended Mansfield Park, it's simply wonderful. Last year for Veteran's day, went to the American cemetary in St Avold's France and wandered the battlefields of Verdun (WWI in keeping with Veteran's day which was originally created in observance of the end WWI). 325,000 dead in a year (mostly French and Germans) with another 600,000+ wounded and missing. Over 40 million tons of artillery rounds dropped on the battlefield (the most ever in one place). Went to the Ossuary where they have over 100,000 unidentified remains that you can look at through the glass. They are still finding bodies to this day. Put a new light on our own casualties in the current war. Would we ever be willing to sustain those kinds of casualties in this day and age?

Nope. Look how much they screeched about the relatively low number of casualties in Iraq. I'm not downplaying the deaths of troops, but in terms of numbers, it's nothing compared to WWI and WWII. Posted by: wherestherum at November 11, 2009 01:50 AM (GZnia) 533
Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.'" As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans. In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress .. at the urging of the veterans service organizations .. amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the last Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on Oct. 25, 1971. Finally on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of Nov. 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed on Nov. 11. For those talking about travelling to Australia and want to go where the crowds aren't, recommend VanDiemens Land (Tasmania). Only tourists they really get are Ozzies from other parts of Australia and Canadians backpacking. Most unusual thing to get used to as an American in Australia is getting asked if your Canadian. Fourth time I got asked, I asked an Ozzie girl about it. She said it was easier to ask an American if he was Canadian because we didn't go into hysterics and be an asshole like most of the Canadians did if they got asked if they were American. Oh, and the only similarities between Taz of Bugs Bunny and real Tasmanian Devils is the sound they make.

532 I am in sync with you on that. I currently serve, but the hysterics over our casualties compared to previous wars is embarrassing from a national perspective. Every casualty is a tragedy, but less than 10,000 from all battles fought the last 8+ years (including 9/11 casualties)? We lose more to traffic fataliies in one year. 325,000 dead in one year from one battle. That's three times the population of the city I'm currently living in. Puts a great deal of perspective on some of the histronics about our casualties.

GrimJack,
Thank you for your service! America has been at war for almost eight years -- almost three times as long as it took America to pound both the Nazis and the Imperial Japanese to the point of unconditional surrender. Almost seven years after defeating Saddam Hussein, Iraq remains at best a conditional victory, since the start of the troop draw-down, Islamic terrorist attacks have increased. As US forces pull out, Islamic fighters move in. Despite the estimated Taliban troop strength in Afghanistan of only 15,000 fighters, the commander of NATO troops on the ground told the White House that without an additional 40,000 Americans, the war is in danger of being lost. How can this be? The main reason is that it is politically incorrect to recognize the enemy for who the enemy is -- because doing so would create a Constitutional crisis. That is the reason that US officials are pretending to be baffled as to Major Hasan's motive for attacking his military colleagues. The Constitution expressly forbids Congress from passing a law respecting religion and from prohibiting the free exercise thereof. That constrains conservatives and Constitutionalists, but it doesn't explain political correctness. It all depends on the definition of religion. As long as Islam is a religion, it is protected by the Constitution. It is, however, also a political philosophy which advocates the violent overthrow of the United States, which is NOT a Constitutionally protected-right. The Left, which ordinarily despises religion, regularly refers to Mohammed as either "the Prophet Mohammed" or simply "the Prophet". The same Left would never refer to Jesus as "the Son of God" -- most won't even acknowledge that the Temple Mount predates Islam or that Jerusalem is a Jewish city. The Left has no problem ignoring the Constitution when ignoring it favors their agenda. The proposed health care bill shreds the Constitution, requiring individuals to purchase health care with their own money or face fines and imprisonment. It is simply a recognition of reality to acknowledge that the Left hates Christianity and everything it stands for. One of Barack Obama's first public pronouncements to the Islamic world was to deny that America is a Christian country in his speech from Ankara. The Left went wild. It is also a fact that Islam hates Western Christianity and everything that it stands for. The Koran says so in no uncertain terms, requiring that Christians under Islamic rule be converted, put to death or relegated to dhimmi status. The Left would fare no better than the Right under Islamic rule, but 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' is the slogan of all left-leaning revolutionaries. If Islam will help bring down Christian hegemony, then Islam must be protected at all costs. That's why when an abortionist is murdered, the automatic and immediate assumption is that the assailant is a Christian pro-life activist. But when a devout Muslim shouts "Allahu Akbar" before opening fire on a crowd of American soldiers, they are 'mystified' by what could have possibly motivated such an act. One thing for sure. It couldn't have been motivated by Islam. That would be jumping to conclusions. Maybe he was a Christian pro-life activist? Posted by: sickinmass at November 11, 2009 02:27 AM (rYWEB) 549
Christianity started off as a slave religion and it seems most modern christians are content with it becoming one again. What can you do?

HYMN BEFORE ACTION
The earth is full of anger, The seas are dark with wrath, The Nations in their harness Go up against our path: Ere yet we loose the legions -- Ere yet we draw the blade, Jehovah of the Thunders, Lord God of Battles, aid! High lust and froward bearing, Proud heart, rebellious brow -- Deaf ear and soul uncaring, We seek Thy mercy now! The sinner that forswore Thee, The fool that passed Thee by, Our times are known before Thee -- Lord, grant us strength to die! For those who kneel beside us At altars not Thine own, Who lack the lights that guide us, Lord, let their faith atone. If wrong we did to call them, By honour bound they came; Let not Thy Wrath befall them, But deal to us the blame. From panic, pride, and terror, Revenge that knows no rein, Light haste and lawless error, Protect us yet again. Cloak Thou our undeserving, Make firm the shuddering breath, In silence and unswerving To taste Thy lesser death! Ah, Mary pierced with sorrow, Remember, reach and save The soul that comes to-morrow Before the God that gave! Since each was born of woman, For each at utter need -- True comrade and true foeman -- Madonna, intercede! E'en now their vanguard gathers, E'en now we face the fray -- As Thou didst help our fathers, Help Thou our host to-day! Fulfilled of signs and wonders, In life, in death made clear -- Jehovah of the Thunders, Lord God of Battles, hear! - Rudyard Kipling Posted by: somejoe at November 11, 2009 02:59 AM (SSWdi) 554

More industrial strength stupid from our friends with journalism degrees.
Do you folks remember the infamous statement from Wendel Goler about the Great Pyramid at Giza being a fine example of Muslim science and architecture? Well we had a similar one last night on Special Report. One of the reporters was discussing the Hasan shout out before he started shooting and the reluctance of the PC crowd to attribute that to terrorism or Muslim Jihad. The reporter made one of those infamous foot n mouth statements "perhaps if the same had been done during the civil war John Wilkes Booth's statement after assassinating Lincoln would not have been a Confederate saying". What Booth said was "sic semper tyrannis" which is Latin for "thus always to tyrants". While true it was the State motto of Va, it is NOT a Confederate slogan of any kind (It is also the motto of Allentown, PA). Experts have said that it is most likely a dramatic invention by Shakespearean actors for the play about Caesar. Booth most certainly was familiar with it since he was a renowned Shakespearean actor. Even more Industrial Grade stupid. This one from a Federal Judge no less here in SC.
She made this statement while striking down a new SC law that created a new license plate with a cross and stained glass window: (Also awarded attorney's fees) State laws promoting one religion over others have been illegal in the United States since the nation's founding, Currie wrote. This from a graduate of the University of SC and also a law school. Evidently she not only knows NOTHING about history, but she knows nothing about the law either. Well Ms Currie if you or a friend happen to read this note the following: The country was founded in 1776. The first Supreme Law was the Articles of Confederation. There was no "first amendment" then. Even after the Constitution was ratified the first amendment did not apply to the States. Several States did in fact have State sponsored religions and nothing was said about it. In fact Ms Currie, this so-called separation of church and State didn't start getting hit on until after the theory of "incorporation" was bandied about with the 14th amendment after the civil war. Making it "illegal" for a State authority to mention anything about religion did not start until the liberal Warren Court in the 60s. So go back and kiss Bill Clinton's ass for appointing you to a court you are obviously unqualified for. Note to all the Morons: This statement is quoted from a local article written by a local reporter. You will not find it in the AP account for the same story. More bias via omission. Something is way off with the claims for that shipping website. This morning it shows only ONE cruise ship in the waters around Miami, all the way down to Puerto Rico. No Way.
And there are no container or auto-carrier ships anywhere near the ports of Brunswick and Jacksonville. Either this site misses huge bunches of shipping in the class it claims to cover, or the economy is so screwed we are done for. Posted by: Musings at November 11, 2009 08:51 AM (6WjQu) 611

Arnold,
Of course I read Ace's post. I read all of Ace's posts. How else would I manage to keep informed about critical information like that? When he goes out hobo hunting, I just sit here, mournfully refreshing the page. (Actually, that joke's a little too true to feel funny) I just find it interesting that either this system fails to track a lot of the ships in its purview, or a lot of ships that are supposed to be using the system, aren't.
