Sullivan: Hasan's Jihad Talk (Which Was Supposed to be on a Medical Topic, By the Way) a Thoughtful, Insightful "Cry for Help"

No link for the pot-smoking case-fixing scofflaw.

Reading Dana Priest's summary and then the document itself, it seems to me that in some ways, Hasan was airing an important debate. I don't glean from the notes for his lecture that he was necessarily an Islamist fanatic, merely that he could see how Islam could be seen as incompatible with military service in Iraq and Afghanistan. His view is pretty close to what many critics of Islam argue. Of course, the power-points cannot convey the tone of content of his actual remarks, so I may be wrong. But as a piece of analysis, it's admirably candid and very clear about Islam's total rejection of a separation between church and state. It seems to me from this evidence that his looming deployment, and the impossibility of a conscientious discharge, were contributing factors to his mass murder. The lecture almost reads like a cry for help, rather than a warning.

Anything to protect Obama.

It was a corrupt deal. An Obama US Attorney (assistant) came down to bigfoot the case and claim that the interests of justice demanded the arrest be expunged entirely.

There is so much BS in Sullivan's take I don't know where to start, but I'll give it a shot.  Let's see:  as a medical officer he would not be directly in combat; he voluntarily signed up for the US military; church and state cannot be seperated (there goes secularism and any argument against creches on public land, etc.); and a cry for help - yep, that always manifests itself as a murder-spree.

Good grief.  When somebody joins the military, they swear to defend a document for which separation of church and state are a key tenet.  This jerk isn't a "victim" because he came face to face with his own lie.

It would be like a Secret Service agent suddenly deciding his "conscience" wouldn't let him protect a President from the other party; we'd wonder why the hell the idiot joined in the first place.

al-Qaeda was also "admirably candid and very clear" about the exact same belief system.  Their beliefs, which are not in any way kept secret, are the problem.

74 The only thing one could say in defense of this, stripping away the sullivanism, is that Hasan didn't hide his beliefs under a basket.  He wasn't some sleeper agent projecting ultrapatriotism while harboring jihadist beliefs in his heart.  He was what he was and he let everyone know what he thought and what could be coming.  If you get a wire that an attack is coming and you ignore it, you do have some (in this case, General Casey, a lot) of the fault.  Hasan's not a victim.  The PC brigade is just a co-perpetrator.  If Sullivan wasn't a moron, he could have made a coherent argument using some of the thoughts.  Too bad conservative sites have been making them since the attack occurred.

If the military is now too PC to protect its own troops from Islamic fanatics on its own soil, how can we be sure it can protect the rest of us?Oh, don't worry, that's not at all what this administration intends from the military. Just think about what Napolitano and others have said -- right wing terrorists (i.e. freedom loving Americans, former military and police, etc) are the threat -- that's where you can expect the military to be used on its own soil.
The 1991 plan of the Muslim Brotherhood to take down the West from within is right on schedule. If we don't collectively get our heads out of the sand we will all be praying to Allah five times a day. Islam is NOT a religion of peace, it is a totalitarian fascist ideology EXACTLY LIKE NAZISM but with the added bonus of a barbarian "religion". The Left loves dictators, communists, marxists, etc., which is why they can't seem to figure out that the problem IS Islam!

Rush put it perfectly, today: Hasan wasn't under the radar, he was on stage.

Hasan wasn't hiding his jihadism; he wasn't being sneaky. So the only conclusion I can draw is that the Army dismissed his rantings as good ol' fashion dissent, which of course is patritoic, as we all know.

Unborn child who happens to be not wanted by his mother = something to be hated and feared and killed with poison and knives.
Terrorist = a person who is only to be pitied, because, after all, we Evil Amerikkkans are responsible for all his suffering.

I will never, ever understand these people. Ever.

102 I think Andrew Sullivan is right. (Just this once.)

Sullivan has looked at Hasan's PowerPoint with an open mind, and described it as something that Robert Spencer might have said about Islam. Hasan's imam Awlaki agreed with it too or else he wouldn't have blessed it.

I've gone through the powerpoint, and I can report that it accurately describes how observant Muslims read their literature and apply it to their dealings with Western institutions (like a secular Army).

I don't much like sharing a bed with Sullivan, Spencer, Awlaki, and Hasan but sometimes, you know...

Posted by: Zimriel at November 10, 2009 05:44 PM (yt2K4)

103

Here's a quick and easy way to point out the dishonesty in Sullivan's argument:

Imagine a pro-life activist flipping out and killing everyone in a planned parenthood office because he was "forced" to pass by it every day on his way to work. That guy's an evil scumbag, obviously.

Hasan, though, because he's a member of a protected victims' group, gets a pass.

So many of the liberals' operating beliefs just don't stand up to close scrutiny. It's one of the reasons I started to drift away from their ranks.

I'm not so sure they can. Well, at least not effectively as once before. My confidence in the Pentagon, at Langley, and at the CIA is broken.

One of my friends told me that when the FBI came to investigate my background for my military clearance, the first question they asked was if they knew whether I had ever threatened the uniformed services or the US government amoung other similar inquiries.  If any one of them would have been answered to the affirmative, I wouldn't have gotten a clearance as well as being discharged from the service.  Is it just me, or has anyone else asked themselves if perhaps any of these same-minded jihadis are officers in any of our military nuclear operations?

Gee, if he wasn't "necessarily an Islamic fanatic," and if Islam entails a "total rejection of separation of [mosque] and state," does that mean that Sullivan believes that ALL Muslims are ticking time bombs ready to burst into sudden jihad?  That NO Muslim who truly believes in his religion can honor the oath of a U.S. military officer to protect and defend the Constitution?

The Torah defines a form of Judaism that rejects separation of temple and state.  The Catholic Church spent centuries rejecting the separation of church and state.  Judaism and Christianity evolved and came to a world view that separates the political government of the temporal world from the mandates of the spiritual world.  Interestingly, there are a number of Muslim countries where Islam has achieved a similar evolution, where leaders are elected by popular vote and not assigned by the religious authorities.

I think that any American Muslim, Christian or Jew who believes that the United States should become a theocracy, its Constitution replaced by Scripture, is by definition a fanatic.  Maybe the problem for Sullivan and the Progressives and the Lamestream Media is that they have spent so long conflating all Christians with the most extreme and findamentalist Christian sects that they can't now admit that it's possible for some members of a faith to be extremist fanatics and yet the vast majority of the members of the same faith to be people grounded in allegiance to the American Constitutional republic.

Nah. I think that if his parallel-universe double, Ludwig von Dousschebag, had given a powerpoint about the Great White Race before going on a spree, we would be ABLE to psychoanalyse him. "Cry for help" is a psychological term, and the reason it is is because it's a well-observed phenomenon.

187 Vince, posting what he likes is the droit de bloggeur, and I do not lightly give suggestions to our hosts here. (Commenters are another story.)

In this case Ace has reached a wrong conclusion, given the explicit content of Sullivan's piece. Given what we know of Sullivan's mental state, I'd say a primary motivation was a musing upon mental instability. Nothing to do with Obama here.

188 I did, however, take the part about supporting and defending the constitution seriously. But that says nothing about separation of church and state.

Posted by: sandy burger at November 10, 2009 06:28 PM (MT+0i)

189 From NRO's Corner:
After the carnage we've seen for two decades, and the high religious authorities that have endorsed it, it is simply astounding that an American president — at a solemn memorial service for soldiers killed just days ago by a jihadist acting on his rational, broadly accepted understanding of his religious duty — could claim that "no faith justifies" sneak-attack murders, and that no religion teaches that "God looks upon them with favor." In fact, a widely held interpretation of Islam holds exactly these principles. No one is saying that all Muslims follow Hasan's construction of Islam, but hundreds of millions do and they have scriptures to back up their beliefs — scriptures we could all read if we'd just pull our heads out of the sand.

To deny that is to deny reality. A country can't be protected by people who lack the will to face reality.

Sort of on/off topic, but isn't the DC Sniper supposed to die by lethal injection tonight at 9:00 p.m. EST?

I heard the Governor of VA didn't give him a stay of execution, so it looks like it's on, for now, anyways.  Rush made the point that the media isn't covering this story much at all.  However, whenever a Republican Governor of a state like TX is going to let someone fry, the media is there having a candlelight vigil.  I hate the media.

by the way, did you happen to notice Sullivan specifically said it was not a warning?

Kinda funny Sullivan would do that if he wasn't deliberately trying to refute the charge that Hasan was setting off warning bells and sirens that were ignored by his superiors and intelligence officers, who just so happen to be under the responsibility of OBAMA.

Sullivan was spinning for Obama. This terror attack, which could have and should have been prevented, happened under Obama's watch.

Heh!  More blue on blue violence:

A group of prominent gay-rights bloggers, activists, and fundraisers, led by AMERICAblogGAY, is launching a boycott on contributions to the Democratic National Committee and Obama's campaign apparatus:  We are asking voters to pledge to withhold contributions to the Democratic National Committee, Organizing for America, and the Obama campaign until the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) is passed, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) is repealed, and the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is repealed -– all of which President Obama repeatedly promised to do if elected....Democrats should not have promised to support gay civil rights rights in exchange for our votes if they never intended to keep the promise. If we're not controversial during the campaign, when politicians are happy to accept our votes and our money, we cannot accept being labeled controversial after our candidates win. We kept our part of the bargain, we voted for Barack Obama and a Democratic Congress. It’s entirely reasonable for us to ask our elected officials to keep their part of the bargain too.

"In a country of 300 million people, there are going to be acts of violence that are inexplicable. Even within the extraordinary military that we have -- and I think everybody understands how outstanding the young men and women in uniform are under the most severe stress -- there are going to be instances in which an individual cracks."...................

It’s no wonder everybody’s hooked on this PTSD excuse:

* It works for Obama by making this a crime and not The First Terror Attack since 9/11.
* It works for Hasan by giving him an insanity defense. (Assume for a moment that Sandy Berger will not be dispatched to the hospital to put a pillow over Hasan’s face.)
* It works for the Army so they don’t have to look at how their diversity cringe gave Hasan a pass.
* It works for the Media because it protects Obama and let’s them keep saying “Coulda’ happened to anybody–heck, he might as well have been Amish.”
* It works for the anti-victory crowd by saying “Bush broke the Army and vets are all damaged kooks–just like ‘Nam, man!”

* And it works for the federal agencies Obama had “eavesdropping” on Hasan  before they decided it was No Big Deal. You can’t expect them to take seriously the writings of a nut, can you? Besides quoting Mao, I mean?

This Pre-Traumatic Stress Disorder is the Holy Grail of Official Narratives(tm). It slices, it dices. It’s a breakfast cereal, it’s a floor polish! It does it all, baby!

It will be interesting to see who gave the orders to ignore Hasan’s e-mails. And to see if Hasan is tried in a military setting after Obama has bashed military justice for so long.

But there is one other narrative that must be observed at all times, The Prime Narrative(tm):

“It’s Not Obama’s Fault.”

268 The maddening thing is that if jihadis like Hasan ever got a claw-hold in US society they would absolutely be pushing for sharia law. Gays don't seem to be treated very well under sharia. Having a brick wall pushed on to you or being tossed off a roof falls under that category of bad things that hurt you.

Sullivan would not fair well under sharia and his audition for the Man from Stockholm isn't his best work.

I hate to say this, because I really am against frivolous litigation, but I really do hope that the families and survivors of this terrorist attack pursue some kind of class action suit against the government.  (Didn't people do that after 9/11?)  This incident is so much worse because 9/11 already happened and we know who our enemy is.  The fact that the government has been culpable in the deaths and injuries of the people who were attacked in Fort Hood makes it even worse.  The main job of the government is national security.  The politically correct agenda embraced by our government is killing people and making national security a joke.  Unless something changes, more people are going to die.  (Sorry, my bold is stuck on!)  Nothing usually changes unless it involves the payment of big sums of money and outraged people.

274 If Hasan is "cracked", then so is every other jihadist.

That means Khalid Sheik Mohammed should be confined at the State Mental Hospital until psychiatrists say he safely integrate into American society; a process that usually takes, two, maybe three weeks.

Hasan's a shrink--maybe he could evaluate KSM for us!

The point is, if this is mental illness, then we aren't fighting terrorism--we're in the War on Craziness. ALL of them are "cracked" by this standard.

-NYT quoting a muslim soldier as saying the WoT was like the Civil War and how he 'didn't want to stain Islam by killing muslims'

-And Hasan holding forth about how muslims should be released as conscientious objectors rather than be forced to fight muslims

I'm beginning to think that maybe Hasan was right about that. Kick them out.
They're soldiers. They balk at orders. Thus they aren't good soldiers.

Speaking of tea bag, did anyone see Bill Clinton used the phrase "teabaggers". Its funny because before the tea party movement started I used to refer to him as Former President Teabagger

Yes, Bill was out there today doing the Dark Lord's work.  He met with Blue dogs and told them not to fear the Teabaggers.  He said the only reason he lost the midterm elections was because he didn't get health care legislation passed.  Now the funny thing is, The Bamster asked him to do this.  I think Bill was only too happy to oblige.  Because when the crap hits the fan, and the Democratic party gets a backlash of poop, Bill will be not be able to contain his glee.  Barry's destroying the Democrat party, and Bill knows it.  So when the Dems are scattered in pieces, they will need someone to put them all back together.  Hmm, I wonder who that could be?

Uh oh, were Barack's trouser creases less sharp today?  David Brooks in the NYT is actually decrying the way the Fort Hood Massacre has been covered in the media:

The conversation in the first few days after the massacre was well intentioned, but it suggested a willful flight from reality. It ignored the fact that the war narrative of the struggle against Islam is the central feature of American foreign policy. It ignored the fact that this narrative can be embraced by a self-radicalizing individual in the U.S. as much as by groups in Tehran, Gaza or Kandahar.

It denied, before the evidence was in, the possibility of evil. It sought to reduce a heinous act to social maladjustment. It wasn’t the reaction of a morally or politically serious nation.

386 @127  I can only speak about the Air Force, but officers wanting to resign is  going to be governed by if they have commitments, such as if the Air Force paid for education, you were promoted, or sent to specialized schools.  In this case, a shrink who got his education paid for by the military is going to owe some serious time or have to pay serious cash back.  Even if you don't owe commitments, you have to apply for separation months out.  Hopefully when they send him to Leavenworth (all officers, regardless of service or length of incarceration are sent to Leavenworth; enslisted depends on length of incarceration) they put him in the general population so that he gets a chance to worship on his knees before every infidel in the joint with both mouth and rectum.

Samuel Adams,

For officers, resigning and separating are two separate things.  Resigning is usually a complicated endeavor and usually done in lieu of courtmartial.  Resigning means you are stricken from the rolls.  If you are mad and want out, there are other options, depending on your situation, but they all involve separation.  Difference between separation and resigning is that if you resign, your commission is stricken and you will never be called up in a national emergency and I believe you forfeit all VA benefits.  If you separate, for officers, you go into the inactive reserve where you remain until 60 something.  Theoretically, you could be called up in a national emergency.  Separation is usually planned out by individuals.  In the case you mentioned, about initial hitch, that is true if they don't incur additional time, and usually they start planning a year out.

Sam, many officers have long commitments now. In the Air Force, many pilots had 10 year commitments and couldn't resign or separate prior to that. I also think I read somewhere that their commitment had increased a few years ago to 12 years. Can't speak for the other services or different jobs.

Someone noted earlier that the media wasn't paying much attention to the DC Sniper execution - not nearly as much as they pay when some scumbag gets executed in Texas.  Easy enough to figure out why.

The Texas serial killers killed Texans.   The DC sniper was shooting people in DC and suburban Maryland.  You know, places where important people live - WaPo columnists and politicians and bureaucrats.  And Andy Sullivan.

They can't publicly cheer an execution, because that's what rednecks do.  But I doubt the DC sniper is getting any sympathy from them.  Those bullets struck a bit too close for the elites' comfort.

Hasan may be a terrorist because of his associations, but his act wasn't terrorism-troops deploying is a legitimate target in war.

it was TREASON. Treason of the worst sort- he was an officer shooting the very troops he was supposed to lead and protect.

I personally put treason on the same level of disgust as terrorism, but this dirtbag took it to a whole new level.

There is no plane of hell low enough for his soul.
