| Media Chicken-Plucking Continues: "Secondary Trauma" May Be to Blame for Hasan's Mass MurderIt is now well past the time we have learned Hasan attempted to contact Al Qaeda, and was a "typical fundamentalist Muslim," and worried the Army (though not enough) with his weekly outbursts in support of jihad. And still it continues. This time from Time.As an army psychiatrist treating soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, Major Nidal Malik Hasan had a front row seat on the brutal toll of war. It is too early to know exactly what may have triggered his murderous shooting rampage Thursday at Fort Hood - Hasan is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 32 others before he was wounded by a police officer - but it is not uncommon for therapists treating soldiers with Post Trumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.) to be swept up in a patient's displays of war-related paranoia, helplessness and fury. (See pictures of suicide in the recruiters ranks.)Um, but what about the fact he appeared to be an Al Qaeda wannabe -- literally a wannabe, attempting to contact them, and drinking the venom spat out by Al Qaeda's favorite former Iman in America? Oh, Time makes allowances their theory may be incomplete: It's entirely possible that other factors may have acted as a trigger for Hasan's alleged killing spree. It's possible. Let's go ahead and pencil in a "Get right on that" as far as these mysterious "other factors." Jeffrey Goldberg has some thoughts on When Muslims Attack: And I can't help but think that the deadly doublethink here is having bad effects even when people aren't being murdered. Thanks to MargaretH., DavidR., and Hot Air's headlines. CommentsPosted by: shibumi at November 09, 2009 11:35 AM (OKZrE) 2

John Ryan, did you get tired of the asskickings at Blackfive? Gen Casey is the convening authority for the General Court Martial - he shouldn't be saying anything remotely prejudicial and second it turns out that the FBI may not have been sharing with the Army what they knew about this clowns AQ links, and third, the Government definition of terrorism is fairly specific and initiates a series of procedures generally related to "coordinated international terrorism". (Which is the term they should use.)

Amazing how many nut jobs go to the same place of worship, cite the same religious texts, and get their publicly expressed insanity ignored because it happens to match the elementary beliefs of a certain religion. If I gave a presentation at a professional conference and, instead of technical information, described how brunettes deserve to be beheaded and boiling oil poured down their throat, I suspect I'd be out of a job pretty damned quick. At the least I'd be hospitalized for observation. Why wasn't this "nutjob" treated the same way? The only answer is because the insanity he spewed is straight from the Koran. It's pretty obvious that the liberal line would be vastly different if the shooter had been a devout Christian or an anti-abortion activist or a so-called "gun nut". This reflexive obeisance towards Muslims is not only ridiculous, but dangerous. It shows a cultural weakness and lack of confidence that our enemies must find very heartening. They see a civilization mired in corruption and decadence -- so much so that they will excuse the murder of their own citizens in the name of "tolerance" and "diversity".
It is "diversity" in particular (in Gen. Casey's formulation) that is a particular evil. "Diversity" in and of itself is not a strength; it is in fact a weakness. It is -- in a pedantic sense -- an adulturation of a pure substance. Sometimes this adulturation is useful, as when iron is adulturated with other alloys to make steel. But often, "diversity" is a negative quality that results in a weakening of the whole. When applied to human culture and creed, it is an admission of weakness more often than not. It is a statement of unbelief, of lack of conviction, an inability or unwillingness to choose between alternatives. In a military, "diversity" is deadly. Militaries are -- they must be -- organizations of rigid chains of command and unit-level homogeneity. (A soldier's "uniform" is called that for a reason: all soldiers are "uniform".) A military dedicated to "diversity" as a goal in itself manifests an inability to determine friend from foe, and a lack of morale among the troops (because the troops are unsure of what purpose they serve in any spiritual or ideological sense). "Diversity" is death for a military...as we have seen. Islam is incompatible with Western liberalist political philosophy. I've thought this for years, and this terrible slaughter at Fort Hood only underlines it. Islam is not just a religious faith; it is a body of criminal and civil law as well. To a Muslim, religious and political are just different words for the same concept. The same is not the case with Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Shitoism, Buddhism, or any other world religious faith. This is why I always say that Islam presents a special threat to the Western style of Westphalian liberalist government. The two systems simply cannot function together in any meaningful way: they are ideologically opposed. That's why Muslims in America are indeed that: Muslims living in America, not American Muslims. A Muslim's first (and some would say only) fealty is to family, Islam and the Ummah. This country is in the jaws of a terrible trap, and unfortunately it is a trap of our own making. We have spent so much time over the past several decades in santifying various victim groups -- women, blacks, gays, unions -- that we have lost the ability to call a true enemy as such. When an Islamic zealot can wilfully murder American soldiers while shouting Allah Akbar, and still find a sympathetic ear among American citizens, that we are well down the road to ruin. If we cannot find the belly to pass the death sentence on such a person*, then we are well and truly lost. *The charge is treason as well as murder, and is punishable by death under the UCMJ. Luckily, there were crews of flight-ready muslims on board who took over the planes, trying to steer them onto nearby runways and save the passengers and any possible victims on the ground. It looks like the MSM has gone beyond Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome to Pre Traumatic Stress Syndrome, the kind of stress you endure before you actually experience any trauma, before you travel to a war zone, and before you sit in a nice, safe doctor's office far from the front line. That's the kind of pre-trauma which can make a man snap, if you're an editor in the MSM desperately looking for an angle to blame anything but the jihadi who killed his own comrades for his religion.

Russell - you cannot really be this fucking obtuse. Let's see here: a soldier shoots up an army base. He is reportedly a religious fanatic, who has given theological harangues in the place of medical lectures, talked openly about his sympathy for the nation's enemies, and apparently shouted a religious slogan while shooting.
And, he's a practitioner of a religion that has a disturbingly large militant component, and has a radical wing that justifies violence to advance the faith. Members of this religion have perpetrated a large number of atrocities recently against those who disagree with them or those who oppose their desire for a theological state. You'd have to be a fool NOT to regard radical Islam as the most likely motivator/enabler for this man. You, and the elites in this country, are devoted to avoiding a number of painful and obvious truths. You are not doing anyone any favors. There is a conversation ongoing about whether Islam is compatible with modern Western society. Your lot is simply pushing it underground where the true no-middle-ground crazies on both sides can dominate the discussion. Your "nothing to see here" rhetoric is making a truly violent resolution to this problem far MORE likely, not less. Posted by: SparcVark at November 09, 2009 12:59 PM (8HaYL) 147

Posted by: Dagny at November 09, 2009 01:20 PM (ytYLi) The modern left is suicidal, in the extreme. This is a result of the heavy use of guilt in individualistic cultures. It's sad, but the power of individualism makes it well-worth the risk. The main lines of demarcation between the West and the arab/persian/muslim world are: Individualism/Guilt/Atonement versus Tribalism/Shame/Revenge The atonement response to illusory guilt generates self-haters and suicidal leftist freaks. The revenge response to illusory shame generates homicidal maniacs who hate everyone outside of themselves and their own cultures. That's why there is no "self-hating left" in the arab/persian/muslim world. But the fact that they are not individualistic is why they are so backward (in addition to the retrograde force of islam, itself). "MSNBC's Rachel Maddow quotes the FBI agent in charge of the inquiry, Ahmed Faisal, as saying, "we are now confident that Hasan's faith played absolutely no role in his state of mind leading up to this tragedy. "we are now confident that Hasan's faith played absolutely no role in his state of mind leading up to this tragedy. End of subject." I know what the FBI agent is saying, but I have a different take. State of mind = mental health. At the extremes - sane/happy/well adjusted/etc vs crazy/disturbed/etc. Islam does not create crazy/disturbed/etc states of mind in its followers. Rather it re-enforces a feeling of sane/happy/well adjusted/etc by its adherents when they faithfully follow its (Islam's) dictates of jihad/killing infidels. So it's perfectly natural to expect a devout Muslim to massacre as many non-believers as possible without atributing it to any abnormal stae of mind/psychology. It's what the religion demands, silly.
