Good News: Iran Working On High Tech Nuclear Warhead Designs UPDATE: Obama Finally Sets Precondition For Meeting

Because warhead design is an integral part of a 'peaceful civilian' nuclear plan.

The very existence of the technology, known as a "two-point implosion" device, is officially secret in both the US and Britain, but according to previously unpublished documentation in a dossier compiled by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iranian scientists may have tested high-explosive components of the design. The development was today described by nuclear experts as "breathtaking" and has added urgency to the effort to find a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis.
The sophisticated technology, once mastered, allows for the production of smaller and simpler warheads than older models. It reduces the diameter of a warhead and makes it easier to put a nuclear warhead on a missile.

2 I mentioned this over at Doubleplusundead. A 'two point implosion' device is a very simple and compact design. It is commonly used to make very small nuclear weapons, so called 'suitcase nukes'. All they need is the Plutonium.

41 Pretty much every nuke that is in a weapon now has a two-point design. 'One-point safe' is a term I heard and didn't understand until I found out that a two-point detonation is how pretty much all nukes initiate implosion -- you can set off one point (fire, crash, accident) and detonate the conventional explosives without causing a nuclear explosion. It takes two simultaneous detonations to shape the explosive wave to properly compress the plutonium and get nuclear fission as a result.

Suitcase nukes are small and tricky to build, I wouldn't worry about those as much as I would worry about the implications of Iran actually being able to arm their missiles with reliable nuclear weapons that are small enough to be delivered. Saying that they are "skipping generations" in nuke weapon design may seem surprising, but implosion of plutonium is now 64 year-old technology. Knowing that two-point implosion works puts you halfway to being able to do it, given clever and motivated physicists and engineers.

Suitcase nukes mess up tens of city blocks. EMP weapons paralyze countries. If you have a reliable nuclear detonation system, which seems like a better application of finite resources?
