| New Congressman From NY-23 Breaks 4 Promises Within One Hour Of Taking OfficeWhen Nancy Pelosi said "we won", wens-to-break-campaign-promises&catid=60:st-lawrence-news&Itemid=175">she was right. Owens indicated in a press release that he was now in favor of the bill in direct contrast to his earlier position during his campaign. During his campaign for Congress, Mr. Owens assured voters that he felt the public option had no place in the health care reform bill. Contrary to that position, Mr. Owens now indicates that he intends to vote in favor of the bill even though it now contains a public option.Owens also promised to vote against cutting Medicare benefits, taxing health care benefits, and increased taxes on the middle class. All of those are "features of the House bill. Here's the Owens statement of support for the bill. Heck of job Republican County Chairs, heck of a job. Thanks to Heather Radish in the comments. He was open about it, but Garamendi had this to say about his CA-10 victory. Garamendi said that three things won the race for him. “There was a very clear difference between Harmer and myself on the issues. He had a very conservative agenda, the Tea Baggers agenda,” said Garamendi. “Also, we ran a very good campaign, at the grassroots. I think the public wants to stay with the Democratic agenda in Congress,” he said. Both special election bozos need to go in 2010. Posted by: California Red at November 06, 2009 03:34 PM (tW88P) 19

OT: In a fast-breaking development comes word that agents of the Attorney’s
General office in Louisiana have raided ACORN’s offices in New Orleans.
ACORN’s New Orleans was, for decades, the headquarters of the national
community organizing association. News of the raid comes from Marcel
Reid and her colleagues at ACORN 8, an association of former ACORN
leaders and board members. Many of the individuals involved with ACORN
8 were fired from ACORN for demanding a forensic audit following an
embezzlement scandal involving Dale Rathke, brother of ACORN co-founder
Wade Rathke.

I am falling through the cracks, and loving it. I have no health insurance, but do have severe heart problems, I battle depression and fight chronic shoulder pain. When I say loving it, I mean the United States of America. I love it, and am praying ObamaCare will fail.
ObamaCare would be a massive expansion of the federal government, riddled with waste, fraud, abuse. It would mean additional losses of individual freedom for every citizen. It's not worth it. I'm not worth it. I don't want the whole nation to suffer, so that I can fill out a federal form. I have wonderful health care. God bless the taxpayers of Cook county, for the angioplasty that saved my life. But please don't expand the federal government in this sweeping manner. I'll struggle to do better. I'll try to get private insurance. Until then, I'll gladly fall through the cracks. I'll go without medication, regular doctor visits, cardiac stress tests. I'll live with pain. My country is worth it. Posted by: duhgee at November 06, 2009 03:41 PM (AHyG/) 34

The Butcher and dugee:
I've long thought that one of the best health-care innovations in modern times was the inclusion of those little health clinics in Wal Mart, Target, and other places. Not everyone needs to go to a fricking doctor for a flu shot, or have a sore throat looked at, or any one of a million other maladies. Even setting a broken bone is something a competent nurse or EMT can do. I'd like to see a stratification of providers, and a pushing of simple health-care stuff away from M.D.'s to people lower on the pay-scale. (Midwives for childbirth, for example.) But this would require a dramatic overhaul of tort law to protect these folks from lawsuits, and a change of mindset from the citizen's perspective on what to expect. I think, ultimately, that people need to understand that health care is a service industry, and is subject to many of the same economies and cost-pressures. (More so, given the amount of regulation it must operate under.) Posted by: Monty at November 06, 2009 04:10 PM (4Pleu) 63
Anyone surprised by this turn of events (um... let me parse my words here...) should, in a just world, be dragged into the public square and shot for being so unbelievably stupid that they cannot possibly function in a free society without posing an imminent threat to those they interact with. (Still parsing...) Then their corpse should be burned, and the ashes collected and sent hurtling via rocket into the Sun. For people that were not surprised and voted for the guy anyway, harsher measures should be called for. Posted by: Cautiously Pessimistic at November 06, 2009 04:13 PM (30xKW) 64

Once you get beyond the easily-fixable inefficiencies in the medical system (tort reform and making insurance available across state lines being the two biggest), you then have to address the tough question of how much health care does a person deserve versus how much he or she can afford. It's a fact of life that older people require more and more (and more expensive) health care as they age. You'll probably spend more money on health care in the last ten years of your life than you did in your entire life previous to that.
Medical science has given us a plethora of new tests, drugs, and procedures that improve the lives of the elderly, but it comes at a huge cost. We are battling right now over how that cost is apportioned -- should the body politic front the bill (socialized medicine), or should the recipients (the elderly, mostly) bear the brunt of the burden? It's a difficult question because at some point, medical technology can only do so much: it becomes a point of diminishing returns. Vast amounts of money are spent on procedures for very elderly, chronically ill people who are unlikely to benefit much (if at all) from the procedures. This is why I believe that any nationalized health system will *inevitably* lead to treatment triage. There is only so much to go around. An elderly patient now has the option to get as much health care as they wish, albeit at enormous expense; if costs are to be contained, then the treatment options offered to people with a poor prognosis will inevitably narrow -- and not at the patient's discretion, but at the governments'. Posted by: Monty at November 06, 2009 04:44 PM (4Pleu) Don't worry, all that will come to a screeching halt if the US socializes health care. It was the profit in our system that funded all of those advances - which the rest of the world then got on the cheap after we had paid for the expensive initial treatments and all the tweaking and adjusting until they became established procedures and efficient manufacturing. It's almost funny that many in the US take medical advancement for granted and don't understand that we paid for it to happen. They seem to believe that, even with all of the profit removed from our sysem, the same R+D will occur at the same pace. But, that is how the simple-minded STATICISTS tend to think about everything. The world just IS, and will always be the same way, no matter irrelevant details of profit or anything .... Posted by: progressoverpeace at November 06, 2009 04:55 PM (A46hP) 82

Went to regular doc today and he drained a thimbleful of pus from it (wow, it really was an infection! who knew! apart from me...) and prescribed me those antibiotics. My impression of "little health clinics": they're quack shacks. Posted by: Zimriel at November 06, 2009 05:50 PM (rtzHA) Posted by: David Paterson at November 06, 2009 05:56 PM (OkT2m) 101

Maybe the people in NY-23 (or the 49% plurality, at any rate) really do want government health care. Biden was in there stumping for Owens, and everyone knows Biden is liberal. He said "vote for my guy", and they did. NY-20, another traditionally Republican district also voted in a democrat earlier this year. There are lots of congressional districts in new york, but I think there are only a couple of Republicans. (Peter King and one other?). No state wide elected Republicans - Republicans are almost extinct in the state. Their economy is a basket case, but still they like their liberal democrats. They keep tolerating higher and higher taxes and upstate pays out lots for welfare in NYC. Maybe they just want socialism, and we shouldn't be surprised that Hoffman lost.

duhgee, Prayers and thoughts with ya. I have chronic pain and depression, so I understand a small portion of what you are going thru. I gave up my insurance last yr when business was so shitty, I was paying $32,000 a yr, just for coverage on the hubby and myself. Luckily we have been able to afford our costs, so far, but I agree with whoever posted above-you can get help from the pharm companies. Good luck, and God bless. #94- Can I please steal that line-jeaniUS-in-Mompants? That rules. Posted by: di butler at November 06, 2009 06:18 PM (S3xX1) 104

Woulda been the same with Scuzzy. Frankly I'm glad it's one of theirs and not one of ours being a traitor to the voters. The ads write themselves, no?
Posted by: tdpwells at November 06, 2009 06:28 PM (Ei3oZ) 106
Actually I think this is good news. I hate to say it but you have to figure that one vote more or less isn't going to matter on this. If Scozzawhatever had stayed in and won she probably would have voted for it anyway. This seat will be up for grabs in one year and instead of the County Chairs picking someone there will be a real nomination vote. I suspect the winner will be a true conservation republican and with this kind of news to use in debates and ads Owens will be tossed out like Pelosi's ethics. The Dems will be forced to pour money into defending this seat which they will lose.
Posted by: scr_north at November 06, 2009 06:49 PM (GE/dx) 107
I agree. Scuzzafava most likely would have voted the same way so it's better to have a Dem lying and spitting on their constituents.
Hoffman or whoever it might be - this writes the campaign ads for the next conservative candidate in NY-23. Posted by: reginaldL at November 06, 2009 06:57 PM (k6Tcc) 108
I'm glad the Repukes have a strong leader like Michael Steele to oversee throwing $900,000 to Skeezerfatwa instead of, say, having a candidate that could be trusted to provide an alternative to a worthless lying worm like Owens. That really worked out well.
Posted by: Captain Hate at November 06, 2009 07:18 PM (oObEM) 109
"Heck of job Republican County Chairs, heck of a job."
Uhm, I believe Scozzafava was beating Owens before the outsiders jumped in and started telling the people there who their "real" candidate should be and who they should "really" vote for. I don't think it was the county chairs who are to blame for Owens having this seat. Sozzafava might have been a RINO but I doubt she would have been on board with Obamacare. Posted by: crosspatch at November 06, 2009 07:36 PM (ZbLJZ) 110
Yeah, on October 1st the polling numbers were:
Scozzafava up 35-27, with Hoffman trailing at 16 percent. Posted by: crosspatch at November 06, 2009 07:46 PM (ZbLJZ) 111
Sozzafava might have been a RINO but I doubt she would have been on board with Obamacare.
Posted by: crosspatch might have been? do you know anything about scozzafava? and the "people" in this case was a ten member board not THE people dipshit. Posted by: evil libertarian at November 06, 2009 08:03 PM (7y71/) 112
Sozzafava might have been a RINO but I doubt she would have been on board with Obamacare.
She endorsed the Democrat. I'd say it's a given. Posted by: toby928 at November 06, 2009 08:30 PM (PD1tk) 113
Wow, when Owens won I said "make the sob live up to his moderate campaigning", but I didn't expect this so soon or so much. Ok, I'd hammer the freaking voters of NY-23 and the rest of the nation with every promise Owens breaks for the next year -- after all, he represents his party too, and if one Dem can be so blatant, well, you know the rest.
Posted by: unknown jane at November 06, 2009 08:34 PM (5/yRG) 114
Perhaps it's only the obvious, but I'm saying it anyway.
They're liars. All liars from the beginning. RINOs, DIABLOs, Democrats, the whole lot of them! Scozzfava worked for the republican party her whole life... and she turns and endorses Bill Owens when the rubber met the road. Bill Owens preaches from high heaven during the campaign he won't support Obamacare... then Supports Obamacare the week he's elected! I could bring up other examples, but these two put the issue to bed if it hasn't already been done so. People blame the politicians, they blame the Lame Stream Media, they blame democrats, they blame Republicans, the Great Pumpkin, Santa Claus, Xenu and whoever else comes to mind.
But here's the fact, people. It's YOUR fault. Maybe not yours sepcifically, but it is the peoples' fault. Period. The people of NY 23 voted for a lying, thieving, socialist scumbag dem, not Xenu, not Santa Claus, not Newt. The people of that district.
Why? Because some of them KNEW he was a lying, thieving socialist scumbag (aka, democrat) while most are/were just simply stupid.
I'm talk___ animal dumb, mouth-breathing, stupid. Anybody that expects a democrat to keep his or her word about anything he or she says qualifies.
Take responsibility, people of NY 23. You're just simply stupid. Live with it. Posted by: Uncle Rick at November 07, 2009 08:39 AM (El8pC) 119
