The Narrative: Hasan Was Suffering From Mental Problems. Subtext: So Are All Soldiers And It's Bush's Fault

Deviate and you are clearly inciting hatred.

Newsbusters has a few examples of the developing narrative.

Whatever you do, ignore the potential for jihad. Things like...

Soldiers reported that the gunman shouted "Allahu Akbar!" — an Arabic phrase for "God is great!" — before opening fire, said Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, the base commander. He said officials had not confirmed that Hasan made the comment.

Or this.

He gave a Grand Rounds presentation. . . You take turns giving a lecture on, you know, the correct treatment of schizophrenia, the right drugs to prescribe for personality disorder, you know, that sort of thing. But instead of giving an academic paper, he gave a lecture on the Koran, and they said it didn’t seem to be just an informational lecture, but it seemed to be his own beliefs. That’s what a lot of people thought.

He talked about how if you’re a nonbeliever the Koran says you should have your head cut off, you should have oil poured down your throat, you should be set on fire. And I said well couldn’t this just be his educating you? And the psychiatrist said yes, but one of the Muslims in the audience, another psychiatrist, raised his hand and was quite disturbed and he said you know, a lot of us don’t believe these things you’re saying, and that there was no place where Hasan couched it as this is what the Koran teaches but you know I don’t believe it. And people actually talked in the hallway afterwards about ‘is he one of these people that’s going to freak out and shoot people someday?’

Follow the link to Instapundit. There's more about Hasan including a report that he'd been reprimanded for "proselytizing about his Muslim faith with patients and colleagues".

Today President Shout-Out said we shouldn't jump to conclusions.

"We don't know all the answers yet. And I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts," Obama said in a Rose Garden statement otherwise devoted to the economy.

Funny but he was willing to reach conclusions within hours of the murder of abortionist George Tiller. Interestingly, it took Him 2 days to issue a statement when a Muslim terrorist killed a soldier at an Army recruitment office in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Seems some incidents call for restraint and others call for immediate conclusions.

Also, compare and contrast the media reaction.

Immediately Tiller's murder an act of domestic terrorism (here, here and here for just a few examples. Warning: liberal sites).

Now however, we must not even consider the idea that Hasan is a Muslim terrorist. Wouldn't want to spread fear and hate.

Just to be clear, jumping to conclusions is not what anyone is advocating. My problem with Obama and his courtiers in the media is that there are certain classes and subject which may not be speculated about but there are clearly some times when it's ok.

The media is most definitely jumping to conclusions, one unconnected to anything we know about Hasan while at the same time ruling out any consideration of a subset of the things for which there is evidence or at least indications.

Right now the Army Secretary and Chief of Staff are meeting the media at Fort Hood. They keep talking about 'stress' and 'suicide' while absolutely avoiding anything inconvenient about Hasan. It's dishonest and dangerous.

And below the fold, since I want to do what little I can to keep this alive, the Presidential Shout-Out not heard round the world.

7 for the record, Medal of Honor recipients abhor the word "winner". They are recipients of the medal, and for the rest of their living days, are caretakers for the medal.

I have met several, and they all are offended, and gently remind anyone when they mention the word "winner".

So how many more lives of US soldiers are going to be sacrificed on the altar of political correctness?  We are in a War of Civilizations, and the Muslims have made it quite clear that they are fighting to win.  Until we do the same, there are going to be a lot more tragedies like this.  This guy was clearly a jihadist, he should never have been in the Army to begin with.  Its not the first time a Muslim soldier turned on non-Muslims and it won't be the last.

Ultimately, to the Muslims, loyalty to the Koran comes before loyalty to the US constitution.  We had better get used to this reality.

Actually, this saluting while in civilian clothes thing kind of irritates me. Irritated me when Bush and Reagan did it, as well. The salute is rendered as a sign of respect for rank between warriors while in uniform. Service members don't salute while in mufti (in fact, they are prohibited from doing so, as I recall), and the civilian members of the chain of command should adhere to the same rules.

132 Actually, this saluting while in civilian clothes thing kind of irritates me.

I must respectfully disagree.  The POTUS is the Commander in Chief, and is also technically a civilian IIRC.  We don't have Supreme Commandants marching around in uniform with dozens of medals pined to the chest.

Come to think of it, when would the CiC ever wear a uniform?  I think George Washington was the first and last POTUS to exercise direct command as CiC, during the Whiskey Rebellion.

148 Obama also seems to have conflicted loyalties. He has repeatedly denounced the U.S. and does not identify with it. He has been indoctrinated to be alienated from our values. His surrogate father was Communist Party apparatchek Frank Davis. Obama in his autobiography (or authorized biography) relates that he found Marxist professors and Islamics to be most congenial to him and he sought out their company. He chose a black racist bigot, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, as his avuncular friend and family intimate, and mentor, a man who spouted anti-American, anti-white, and anti-Jewish vitriol for some two decades of their association.

Conditioning affects anyone. Obama's other associations are permeated with people whose stated beliefs are antithetical to American values, people such as self-declared domestic terrorist, Weatherman Bill Ayers, whose group bombed the Pentagon, and Ms Dunn, who praises the philosophy of Chairman Mao, a monster whose "philosophy" caused him to murder as many as 70 million Chinese during peacetime.

"They weren't in Iraq," author Dinesh D'Souza said on television Thursday night, analyzing the culprit. "They were living a normal, everyday life." But he is wrong. In the midst of two wars, those living as military and military family experience a different—often, more distressing—everyday experience of "normal." And forgetting that, either in understanding this singular case, or making a decision about more deployments, is dangerous at best, and morally bankrupt at worst.

I come from a military family and have friends in the military and they all seem to live perfectly normal lives.

What Mr. Bast fails to realize is that those who are suited for military service are generally better able to cope with the stress involved, unlike candy-assed dandy boys like the author himself. This guy needs to get kicked in the nuts, just because.

If only there were some clue to the motivations of a man who, after a history of attraction to Islamic jihadism and open support for suicide bombers, shot down dozens of American soldiers while screaming "Allahu Akbar."

Nah, you're right...this must just be another routine example of the pathology of our military.  No other pattern could possible explain these totally random, disconnected data points.

I say we just blame Bush and call it a day.

Incidentally, I wonder how coy the media would be about "jumping to conclusions" if this had been some sort of fundamentalist Christian pro-lifer screaming "praise Jesus" as he gunned people down.  /sarc

177 Call it jaywalking, for all I fucking care.  I'm just waiting.

I understand.  It's semantics in many ways, but I think it's important to keep clear exactly what the nature of terrorism is. Mostly because I don't want it blurred from the other direction by those that seek to define attacks like 9/11 as legitimate resistance. I too would like the media to call it as it is though, rather than wringing their hands over how much angst this poor guy must have been feeling.

(Similarly, the attack on the pentagon at the time is, as a matter of definition, distinct from the other actions on that day in that it targeted a military command center. That the attackers acted as they did makes them "unlawful combatants", legally, rather than "terrorists.")

Regardless, they all deserve the 72 virgin goats they are promised.

The thing that gets me is the MSM is so damn anxious to tag folks in the military with the old Vietnam labels of KillKrazyPsychotic/TraumatizedChildlikeVictim.  And why that gets me is that PTSD and related issues are real problems, but the focus from the MSM isn't meant to inform, but to sensationalize and use them for their political narrative.  Like the number of suicides (NOT suicide rates), assaults/murders (NOT assault/murder rates), etc.  They're building a case for Vietnamizing the GWOT, and this is just another step for them.

Bad MSM!  No market share!

President Obama:

During your campaign, Americans watched as you made mockery of our tradition of standing and crossing your heart when the Pledge of Allegiance was spoken. You, out of four people on the stage, were the only one not honoring our tradition.

During one of your many speeches, Americans heard you say that  you intended to visit all 57 states.

We all know that Islam, not America has 57 states.

When President Bush leaned over at Ground Zero and gently placed a flower on the memorial, while you nonchalantly tossed your flower onto the pile without leaning over.

Every time you apologized to other countries for America  's position on an issue we have wondered why you don't share our  pride in this great country. When you have heard foreign leaders berate our country and our beliefs, you have not defended us. In  fact, you insulted the British Crown beyond belief.

When your pastor of 20 years, "God-damned America " and said  that 9/11 was " America 's chickens coming home to roost"  and you denied having heard recriminations of that nature, we  wondered how that could be. You later disassociated yourself from that church and Pastor Wright because it was politically expedient to do so.

When you announced that you would transform America ,  we wondered why. With all her faults, America is the greatest country on earth. Sir, KEEP THIS IN MIND, "if not for   America and the people who built her, you wouldn't be sitting in the White House now." Prior to your election to the highest office in this Country, you were a senator from Illinois and  from what we can glean from the records available, not a very  remarkable one.

All through your campaign and even now, you have surrounded yourself with individuals who are basically unqualified for  the positions for which you appointed them. Worse than that, the  majority of them are people who, like you, bear no special allegiance, respect, or affection for this country and her  traditions.

87 I wonder if Fox gave Greta a talking to after yesterday's program. I couldn't believe she was the one sounding like the voice of anti-excuse reason.

I was thinking the same thing...when Hasan's cousin was whining about the alleged "harassment" she skeptically cocked her head and pointed out that he is a "Major not a Pvt in boot camp."  After suffering through all the hyperventilating from stupid Shep I did a double take.

183 Obama doesn't want us jumping to conclusions?  Wrong. Obama doesn't want us, through reasoned thinking and examination of facts, to ever arrive at a VERY SPECIFIC CONCLUSION.  To avoid that one particular conclusion at all costs, is what he means.

Even if this guy admits that he did it for Allah, for the Umma, the Caliphate, and cites the hundreds of relevant verses in the Koran, the examples set by Mohammed and recorded in the Sira, and the teachings of his mosque from the Hadith, we still must NOT arrive at this particular conclusion which Obama is alluding to.

We must blame the Army, Bush, come up with "PreTSD", ambient racism in TX, Global Climate Change, and angry white conservative people.

But never arrive through reason and truth at a logical conclusion.  That would be "jumping".

If you feel better calling him a terrorist than a traitor, go ahead.  I'm speaking to the legal definitions of each.  I don't think it puts him in any better light to define the attack properly. Lack of clarity over what these sort of terms mean is what lets leftist assholes avoid calling a spade a spade.

To them, we are just killing machines of the military industrial complex.

The president was smoking pot with his friends in college over the weekend, while real men wear in the field training to save their asses.

193 Yeah Greta said he was a "major" but he really wasn't. He had been in the Army for 6 years. You do not get to be a "Major" in 6 years in the normal path.

He should have been a civilian after the first episode, but if the thread that his education was paid for by the Army is true they may have figured that he was trying to get kicked out so he could short change them on commitment.

They should have busted him for "conduct unbecoming" and sent him to Leavenworth with his very on DD.
