| Pelosi = FochMaybe Pelosi is channeling Ferdinand Foch? ...Saturday, the House will take up a 2000 page health care bill that will raise taxes, cut Medicare, and cost more than a trillion dollars. That is the political version of Foch telling his troops to attack in the face of the German machine guns in the bloody fields of the Somme River Valley. It may seem to be politically courageous to the liberal Democratic leadership, but it is political suicide to the 75 or so vulnerable moderates who will face the ire of the voters in a year. Foch’s tactics during the Great War, as it was called back then, unnecessarily killed thousands of French troops at the Battle of the Somme, leading to his eventual dismissal and an unhappy place in history."Unhappy place in history" indeed. 30 years from now I rather expect historians to write fairly dismal accounts of the Obama era, with special emphasis on the seemingly bottomless incompetence and remarkable tone deafness of a congressional leadership that couldn't read a newspaper let alone the mood of the electorate. The Somme was primarily a British effort. But the over-the-top suicidal elan of Foch and other French generals, miles from the trenches, is correct. So make that wasteful and homicidal, rather than suicidal.
Cordially... Posted by: Rick at November 06, 2009 12:04 PM (AIKsa) 5
Point of history, although the French did fight at the Somme, it was the British led by Haig who have garnered the black mark of failure for their performance at the Somme. The Brits took 60,000 casualties on the first day, July 1, 1916. Foch was definitely a buffoon, but the Somme was primarily British buffoonery.

I don't think she's necessarily dumb, certainly Rahm and those guys are smart (if evil.) This is her/their best chance to grab 15 - 20% of the economy and turn us into Europe. They might lose the House for a couple of cycles, but once everybody needs the largesse of the govt to, quite literally, stay alive, the Dems will be in power forever. Our best hope to stop this now lies in the Senate -- God help us all!
If this passes this session, we'll never have the 3/4 we need to uphold an Obama veto even if we could get a GOP House to rescind the bill in 2011 -- and I have no confidence we could EVER get the Senate to rescind this in its horrible totality once it passes. Goodbye to the republic, it was nice while it lasted. Posted by: MaureenTheTemp at November 06, 2009 12:05 PM (8cihe) 11

Didn't Hoyer announce that the vote may slip into next week? I don't think Pelosi has the votes -- probably nowhere close. She's throwing her weight around, and probably threatening bloody revenge if the votes don't go her way; but when all is said and done, the red-state Democrats are beholden to the voters, not to Mme. Speaker. Lots of them know the warning implicit in the Virginia and NJ elections (particularly the Virginia blow-out): the vaunted "move to the left" of the electorate was an illusion. If they vote for this shit-sandwich, they're dead come election day. Pelosi can make their lives miserable, but the voters can end their political careers.
The unemployment numbers that came out today aren't going to help, either. Trying to ram a grotesquely expensive entitlement down a recalcitrant electorate's throat in the teeth of the worst employment picture in fifteen years is madness, but that seems to be the track Pelosi has chosen. Mme. Speaker seems to be channeling Captain Queeg more and more. Posted by: Monty at November 06, 2009 12:11 PM (4Pleu) 20

It may be short-term, individual-congressmen suicidal--but it is quite the contrary if you are looking at the long-term socialist agenda.
As every socialist ideologue in the last 50 years has pointed out, if you can socialize medicine, you will quickly have complete control of the society. It's the Nazi principle: Threaten people's children, and they will do anything you command. A mother will do whatever it takes to save her child's life if it is in danger--she will put up with a socialist system, she will pay whatever they ask her to pay, be quiet about whatever they ask her to be quiet about, go along with whatever they demand. Yes, the socialists are perfectly willing to sacrifice however many Democrat seats they end up losing next year. Don't you see? IT WON'T MATTER. Even if Republicans regain a majority, they will not be able to reverse socialist health care once it's enacted!!! What Conservatives really need to be focusing on is taking 3/4's of the State Legislatures. Once we do that we can simply repeal anything the Dems did by Constitutional Amendment. It will be terribly hard to do but it will basically be the only way out of the trap the left is putting this country into. If we do go that route we need to be willing to go in and gut the Federal Bureaucracy to the bone. If they passed this, couldn't it be attached to something in the Senate like Rush talked about. This is what he said:
"the trick is to take a health care bill in the Senate and attach it as an amendment to another bill that could be related or unrelated. Now, the TARP bonus bill is unrelated. There are a couple of other bills -- "vehicles," they're being called -- that Reid could use and then call for a cloture vote. And because it's not the overall health care bill, it's likely the cloture vote would be lost because the people who are afraid to vote for cloture on a straight health care bill could then say, "Well, we weren't voting on the health care bill. We were voting on the TARP bonus bill," or one other, two other bills that Reid might use if not the TARP bill. So there are two health bills in the Senate: One from the Harkin committee, one from the Baucus committee. Harry Reid takes the best of both, he merges them, creates one Senate bill and attaches that as an amendment to a bill that either has something to do with health care or in the case of the TARP bonus bill has nothing to do with health care. And once they get cloture, he could drop that combined bill to the floor of the Senate, which includes Baucus and Harkin, and then they'd only need 50 votes to pass that final product because Biden would be there to provide 51 if necessary. Now, one of the questions here is: Can they get Senator Byrd to the chamber? He's in poor health. If they can't get Byrd to the chamber, the only need 11 votes. You have to assume they're not gonna be able to get Byrd there. Now, we can also assume that we get all the Republicans and Ben Nelson and Blanche Lincoln; maybe Pryor, Landrieu, Bayh, McCaskill, Carper, Warner, Webb. But the Democrat side will get Specter and Bennett and Nelson and Shaheen and Conrad -- and, in that situation, our side would lose." Not a good analogy. Foch was not dismissed and exiled into an unhappy place in history. His performance up to that point had been far better than that of his Allied contemporaries. He later went on to be the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces and played a critical role in defeating the Germans in 1918.
A better analogy would have been General Nivelles whose generalship resulted in the French mutiny of 1916 and who was relieved and relegated into obscurity. Posted by: Durable Hawk at November 06, 2009 12:52 PM (mOUat) 86

We already know the ME twins, Lowlife Linsdey, and Crapweasel McLame are for crap and tax. And that bill stands to hit us a lot harder than healthscam. And I have yet to hear any damn news reader discuss the onerous shit that is in that bill. Like having to spend several hundred thousand dollars on your house before you can sell it, refinance it, or even make an addition to it. . Yes, that shit sandwich is close to passing now. God forbid, should this monstrosity of a Bill pass, who says it could not be repealed? Repeal has happened historically.
Not in recent times. The last law of this magnitude that was repealed was the Volstead Act (Prohibition), and that was way back in 1933. Given the realities of gerrymandering and near-perpetual-incumbency, I see little hope of a health plan getting repealed once enacted. The system would have to completely crash first because no politician would be willing to take medical care away from old people and babies (which is most assuredly how Democrats would frame it). This is the fabled "liberal ratchet" effect. More broadly, it explains why democracies almost always implode from within -- entitlements get out of hand and the state becomes both bankrupt and morally corrupt. Um...the original aritcle is screwy and does a great disservice to Foch. First off, the Somme was a mostly British operation, and while Foch was temporarily fired, his commander, Marshall Joffre, was given the permanent heave-ho shortly thereafter. Second, Marshall Foch was restored and made the Allied commander-in-chief in 1918. He was unhappy with the 11/11/18 cease-fire, because he believed (correctly) that the Germans had not been utterly defeated, and would again pose a mortal threat. (Our Black jack Pershing thought exactly the same way.) . Upon reading the Versailles Treaty, Foch was heard exclaiming, "This isn;t a peace! It's a cease-fire for 20 years!" Well, 20 years and 65 days later, England and France declared war on Hitler's Germany. Posted by: Big Mo at November 06, 2009 01:10 PM (HI9pP) 96

Not the same Monty, the Volstead Act was a Constitutional Amendment which took another Amendment to remove it. That is much more difficult than repealing a simple Act which can be done with 51%. A much more timely repeal was the act that forbid some credit unions type places from engaging in banking activities. The one the commies are blaming their failures on. The Civil War battle at Franklin TN might be a better metaphor. General Hood, angry and frustrated at the misadventures of his invasion of TN, decides his army needs the "discipline" of a frontal assault on the Union army, entrenched, some armed with repeating rifles. In 5 hours of butchery into the dusk and night the army loses 7000 men (1750 killed), fifteen generals (6 killed, 8 wounded, 1 captured) and any hope of success in the future.

Our elders were pretty smart when they were pleased with little to no turnout from the 18-29 year old electorate. Don't you people know anything about history? Foch wasn't the French Army commander during the Battle of the Somme; Joffre was. Joffre was replaced by Nivelle who was replaced by Petain. Foch was appointed supreme commander of all Allied armies in March 1918, above Petain. French troops mutinied under Nivelle, hence Petain's promotion. Joffre more than anyone else was responsible for the victory at the Battle of the Marne in 1914, which saved France and arguably doomed German. God, the ignorance on display here is astounding. Posted by: Old Texas Turkey at November 06, 2009 01:23 PM (0D4RJ) I'll grant he was a great general, and personally no evil Nazi. Nevertheless, he served Hitler and would have helped him subject the entire planet to his tyranny had not the war turned against Germany. Yeah, he was implicated in a plot to kill Hitler... after it became clear Hitler would lead Germany into utter destruction. It wasn't for humanity's sake that Rommel plotter to kill Hitler. Had Hitler proven victorious in Russia and occupied London, Rommel would have been just fine with him. Posted by: CoolCzech at November 06, 2009 02:15 PM (QECjC) 115
Had Hitler proven victorious in Russia and occupied London, Rommel would have been just fine with him. Well, I'm not sure they were even at war with Russia at the time Rommel turned against Hitler, and he was primarly concerned over what had happened in North Africa where Rommel had fought, and ultimately lost to a British general I believe was called Montgomery. Posted by: Entropy at November 06, 2009 02:25 PM (IsLT6) 116
Newspeak transformed tone deaf into change we can believe wherein we have no place. American citizens lack standing so far as Pelosi's Congress is concerned.
Why on earth Congress doesn't revolt against Pelosi is the question worth pushing. The House Speaker is only as strong as she is enabled by dhimmi followers. Americans are NOT with Pelosi. Constituents have turned the very pitchforks against Congress that Obama himself threatened against American citizenry. Posted by: maverick muse at November 06, 2009 02:28 PM (F1b/5) 117
Well, I'm not sure they were even at war with Russia at the time Rommel turned against Hitler ... They were. His primary concern was the way the war was going on all fronts--badly. He was in command of the Normandy defenses on D-Day and knew first-hand that Allies would in all likelihood win the war. Previously his loyalty to Hitler was sufficient to get him appointed as commander of Hitler's personal defense battalion, in 1938. He was also a close personal friend of Joseph Goebbels. Make of that what you will. Posted by: Steve (aka Ed Snate) at November 06, 2009 02:48 PM (28MmA) 118

Posted by: Steve (aka Ed Snate) Steve, thanks for The Great War to End All Wars tutorial. Seriously, it's appreciated. My grandfather was a Major in that war, but never spoke of his war experiences. He let his son, a WWII Vet and Korean War Colonel, enjoy the limelight telling old war stories to us kiddies gathered together at family reunions, particularly at Thanksgiving when he'd come from the Pentagon to visit us all. Comparing the utter carnage of the D-Day assault, every day was that way during the Great War that never should have been; WWI was utterly hopeless in conception and execution and ultimate outcome. I read Grandpa's journal after he passed away. Evidently, the American officers were ordered to never look above the trench after commanding their men to assault. He did, though, and the wasteful carnage he saw broke his heart, all the men mown down without getting anywhere, time and again, which explains why he refused to describe that war to his grandkids. But he taught us all the songs which we sang together with gusto, taught us to respect weapons properly, and shared the sentiment that in warfare, neither Grandpa nor my Uncle admired the arbitrary and pompous French commanders.
