Suspect in custody an officer?

RT @chucktodd NBC's Pete Williams: US official says early reports are the man in custody is in the military, late 30s, with officer rank.

NBC affiliate is now saying that there are new unconfirmed reports of shots being fired.

Sen. Hutchison says a general at Hood is saying 30 wounded.

Original Post:
Just breaking.

All available EMS units in and around Killeen are being dispatched to Fort Hood where a "mass casualty event" has taken place.

News Channel 25 has learned a shooting has left seven people dead and 12 injured.

The Nolanville Fire Department tells News Channel 25 that they've been asked to bring all available EMS and Rescue personnel.

2 gunmen, supposedly in uniform of some sort, 1 in custody.

MSNBC is going off thinking it's mentally ill soldier but now they are saying 3 shooters.

Another (3rd) shooter has started shooting. Sounds like an attack. Too soon to say for sure but shit. Just shit.

20 Many people wont realize that on a CONUS base the vast majority of soldiers are going to be unarmed and have very limited access to weapons. It is not like Fort Apache or an FOB in Iraq, wherein a bugel call goes off and you grab your rifle from the hook at the end of your rack.

I think this is a Federal Crime, and yes, the death penalty will apply. If the shooters are (muslim convert or mole?) servicemen, the UCMJ should apply, and we should get a relatively quick execution. Timothy McVeigh was executed fairly quickly (6 years rather than 16 or even 26)

He knows nothing about the military, nothing about the Army, nothing about security, nothing about what he's talking about.

Ft. Hood is now a 'closed' base.  They're talking about security now.  Shooters wouldn't come in the damn gates anyway.  You can tell these people have never been to Ft. Hood - it's HUGE.  They could crawl over a fence for goodness sake and walk to wherever they want to go.

Instead of waiting for facts and sticking to reporting what they know, now they have to sensationalize it.

Posted by: catmman at November 05, 2009 03:53 PM (BCSpK)

112 Three shooters, three locations.  The first two apparently opened fire simultaneously at the base movie theater and at the Soldier Preparedness Center.  Only after one shooter was in custody and the other on the run did the shooting occur at the PX (the base has several shopping mini-malls and areas, so it's unclear where that third location is).

So, multiple shooters, multiple targets, and not a lone PTSD case or whatever the media wants the narrative to be.

I cross my fingers that this is a training drill that somebody picked up over the radio and misunderstood, like what happened on Sept. 11th this year.

Doubt seriously that's the case or they'd know by now.  But that's the only good scenario I can think of.

This was obviously a planned attack.  People who have gone off the deep end generally work alone, not in teams.

Posted by: yinzer at November 05, 2009 03:51 PM (/Mla1)

The fact that every EMT unit in the Ft. Hood-Killeen area has been scrambled to assist with the casualties sort of confirms that this is not a drill.  That, and the many official announcements by the base and by elected officials.

156 To get on through the gate, one needs a passable military ID and window sticker.  The guards will inspect these directly for a few seconds, and can pull a vehicle for spot checks if something is suspicious.  The IDs and sticker would not be impossible to fake, but would require some work and planning to pull off.  Also, getting in to pull of a simultaneous attack would most likely require multiple visits over time for planning.

Guns would have to be smuggled in, as active soldiers in garrison don't have their weapons.  (once on a post, the targets are as soft, if not softer, than a civilian site, since the concealed carry laws in Texas would not apply - less chance of an armed civilian stopping things.)

Ft. Hood is huge, as noted above, so entry through the countryside is also possible.

To me, this level of planning and access suggests an inside job (i.e. at least one of the shooters or planners is military).  Hope I'm wrong.  Praying for my fellow soldiers and their families.

197 CONUS military installation security is lax, as opposed to what the general public might think.

Security is tiered towards controlling entry.  Gates and entry control points are the priority.  Mobile patrols work in their respective sectors (usually).  If there is a high priority resource, the security around that resource would be higher, depending on the resource.

Ft. Hood is massive.  If I had to guess and this was anyone other than military guys, they probably came over a fence somewhere and simply walked where they wanted to go.  If they were wearing uniforms, even if they were carrying weapons, they wouldn't seem to out of place on a military base, even in traditionally built up areas - BX/PX, theater, Commissary, etc.

And as someone else mentioned, if they came on a base, it isn't to hard to get on in civilian type vehicles claiming to be cable-TV, whatever - security, as good as it is, isn't that tight.

And frankly, most of the entry controllers are probably civilian contractors and they just don't pay as close attention as active duty guys in my experience.

230 Of course the commie press need for it to somehow be a PTSD case, poor soldiers driven to madness by George Bush's evily evilness. They need it to be that way, to fit the "military at the breaking point" narrative that they've been beating to death for years now. Anything else wouldn't suit their needs, and must be ignored and suppressed.

And of course, if this turns out to be what most of us expect it to be -- an islamo-vermin attack that managed to slip through -- they'll do their damnedest to bury it. Which will only further punctuate how contemptible -- and dare I say, treasonous -- they've become.

NBC suggesting they wouldn't be surprised if it's a soldier suffering from PTSD. Of course that's what they're positing...

From MSNBC website

"Fort Hood has seen other violence in recent years. In September 2008, a 21-year-old 1st Cavalry Division soldier shot his lieutenant to death and then killed himself. Spc. Jody Michael Wirawan of Eagle River, Alaska. shot himself to death after shooting 1st Lt. Robert Bartlett Fletcher, 24, of Jensen Beach, Fla. to death"

they could have just as easily said 3000 people were killed when muslims flew planes into buildings in new york, but then again we all know what they are hoping for.

I have mixed feelings on the perps. One part of me hopes they both get killed, another part wants one to be captured so we can find out all the details about those responsible.

Either way, I hope the twenty wounded aren't badly wounded and will make recoveries.

I kinda depends.  Most entry control duties at military facilities have been taken over by civilian contractors or DOD cops over the past few years - at CONUS bases.

You'll see MP's or SF on the gates from time to time, or at certain gates, it just depends on the installation, manning, lots of factors.

Almost all the 'sentries' down here in San Antonio are civilians.  Most of the military police are deployed or doing other 'cop' work on base.

Doesn't fit the profile. Most of the ones we've dealt with domestically have been under 35 IIRC.

335 281 - Most urban shootings are with crap rounds (.25, .380, 9mm), not what any decent handgunner would use. The 5.56 military ball with the regular twist is essentially designed to wound - no one will be checking themselves out of the ER. The reports say M16 - the only thing we can infer from that is that the shooters were likely using rifles not pistols (still could be wrong) which is bad.

This is an indication of military 'security':

If you wanted to stand on top of a missile silo containing an actual nuke, how hard would you think it was to gain access?

Answer:  A bolt cutter or simply climb over the fence.  That's it and you could set up your tailgate party on top of an active missile silo.  And you' have anywhere from 15-30 minutes before any security folks showed up to take you off/out.

Of course you'd never get through the 40 ton 'blast door' covering the silo, so...

Military security is relative.  It is nothing like you would think it is and nothing like what you've seen in the movies.

427 A note about military fatigues: they're really easy to get, even the newer ACU's. You can mail order them from lots of places. And making yourself into an officer with ACUs is as simple as slapping a velcro patch onto the front of your uniform blouse and maybe pinning a subdued rank onto your cover. A civilian can buy this stuff with very little trouble (though it is a crime to impersonate a military officer).

Why is that my OPINION?

Because if I was going to go on a rampage, I'd go into my company area and pop people that have pissed me off over the years. Top, CO, that bastard XO, etc.

536 I just heard about this as i turned on fox. and then i herd them say the president was about to speak, and i felt a deja vu like feeling where your emotion is out of sync with reality,... i felt like Bush was about to speak, and i felt a little relief that listening to him would help,...  but of course i instantly realized it wouldn't be Bush, but Obama.

Let me say for the record that I regret every bad thing I ever said about that man. He may have screwed the pooch on the  economy, but he we a Leader and a good President.

538 476,  The problem with the SS109 round is that it was designed to go through hard objects or body armor before entering tissue and then fragmenting.  They can't make it a hollow point, so they use other designs so that it fragments after entry.  When the SS109 round goes into unprotected tissue, especially at close range, it often will go 10" or more before it starts to yaw or fragment, which results in a lot of small holes straight through with no fragmentation.  Yes, there is alot more initial energy on impact and I would never want to get hit with it.  But given the choice of getting hit with a 45 hollowpoint or a SS109 at close range, I would rather get hit with the SS109 round.  That all changes if you are wearing body armor...the armor would stop the hollow point, but not the SS109.

629 Elizabeth, you are thinking of mala'ik that is angel. MLK is the Semitic signifier for rulership. So "mulk" in Arabic is "sovereignty" and "maalik" is a "ruler". For instance, 'Abd al-Maalik means "slave of The Ruler" the ruler in this case being God.

638 629 Elizabeth, you are thinking of mala'ik that is angel. MLK is the Semitic signifier for rulership. So "mulk" in Arabic is "sovereignty" and "maalik" is a "ruler". For instance, 'Abd al-Maalik means "slave of The Ruler" the ruler in this case being God.

I googled name origin malik and click on the first link that popped up. That's where my info comes from. God knows I don't know any damn Arabic.

639 and then i herd them say the president was about to speak, and i felt a deja vu like feeling where your emotion is out of sync with reality,... i felt like Bush was about to speak, and i felt a little relief that listening to him would help,...  but of course i instantly realized it wouldn't be Bush, but Obama.

It took me about six months to adjust to the reality when the words "the president" were spoken, they were being used in reference to the ass Obama. I had to keep reminding myself Bush wasn't president anymore.

Funny how the Feds claimed it wasn't terrorism related ten minutes after it happened. Three gunmen in a coordinated shooting wasn't random. It could hagve been drug or gang related. But claiming it wasn't terrorism related was stupid. Or maybe I should say SOP.

But since there is no "War on Terrorism". Guess this is a "Domestic Contingency Operation" related incident.

Then he droned on about them having an "extremely productive conference"...and giving his "solemn guarantee that this is not the end of a process, but the beginning of the process" and that "we are going to follow up....every single member of my team understands that this is a top priority for us...this is not something that we just give lip service to...and we are going to keep on working with you to make sure that the first Americans get the best possible chance in life...blah...blah...blah..."
