| Chicago Tribune: "V" Aims at ObamamaniaNotes the strong parallels to Obama's Cult of Personality, and the media's embrace of it, yet enjoys it anyway. magine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care. The news media swoons in admiration -- one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: "Why don't you show some respect?!" The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader's origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: "Embracing change is never easy." So, does that sound like anyone you know? Oh, wait -- did I mention the leader is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who's come here to eat us? Welcome to ABC's "V," the most fascinating and bound to be the most controversial new show of the fall television season. Nominally a rousing sci-fi space opera about alien invaders bent on the conquest (and digestion) of all humanity, it's also a barbed commentary on Obamamania that will infuriate the president's supporters and delight his detractors. "We're all so quick to jump on the bandwagon," observes one character. "A ride on the bandwagon, it sounds like fun. But before we get on, let us at least make sure it is sturdy."I was blogging the election and only half watched (or one third watched, really). From what I saw, it looked good enough. In case you didn't see: Not only have the aliens smuggled infiltrators to prepare the ground for their coming, but those aliens are... terrorists. White, WASP-y looking terrorists, but still. But... The producer has been replaced, and the pilot rumored cut in half, in order to reduce the more-blatant Obama parallels. That "rumor" part isn't from the link, but a rumor sent by OgreGunner, without attribution. The New York Times predictably slammed the show. It's always amusing to me that liberals instruct conservatives that we should appreciate art for its own sake, even if -- especially if -- it "challenges our beliefs." Do liberals behave similarly? Um, no. Full-fledged freak out whenever the industry they own puts out a single movie or tv show which raps them. Comments1
I heard ABC already fired the creative director/writer, is that true? Expect this version to turn hard left by the next episode, but the premiere was pretty good. Lots of Morena B. screentime, rowwwrrrrr. Posted by: Dang Straights at November 04, 2009 04:05 PM (Haq+B) 2

White, WASP-y looking terrorists Really? The dude shown only in the photograph looked kind of Islamic to me. At the very least, slavic in need of a shave. They've incorporated the whole reptilian conspiracy into this, which is a good angle for the fiction. A few people are worried about 'whats to come' with whom the lizards have been, but they've clearly already insinuated that the War on Terror was created by the V's, in a way that's wholey palatable. Islamic terrorism and religious wahabbist fundementalism was created by the V's. Posted by: Entropy at November 04, 2009 04:06 PM (IsLT6) 4
ABC's "V" is getting "Chuck"-ed. The red-hot alien drama, which premieres tonight following glowing reviews, has nonetheless made a change at the top. Original showrunner Scott Peters has been replaced by "Chuck" alum Scott Rosenbaum, ABC confirmed Tuesday. Peters will retain an executive producer credit on "V" and is still on staff at the show as of Tuesday morning. But Rosenbaum, an executive producer on "Chuck" (and "The Shield"), will now be at the helm. UPDATE 1:40 p.m. CDT: Insiders also confirm that writer/executive producer Jeffrey Bell ("Alias") has left "V." The showrunner shift had been anticipated in Hollywood circles for weeks, since ABC and Warner Bros. TV made the joint decision to halt production on the series in order to get scripts in shape. According to USA Today, which broke the news of the shuffle, Peters was removed from his post last Thursday. "V" begins a four-episode run tonight at 8. It's scheduled to return in March for the remainder of its first season. Posted by: MRI at November 04, 2009 04:07 PM (aVQo/) 5

Yeah, they canned them. One is getting an "Executive Producer" credit.
I guess somebody at ABC got pissed at Teh One getting razzed. Looks like the only guys with thinner skins than Obots are Muslims. There's also rumors going around that the premier was cut to 1 hour, to minimize the Hopey-Changey critique. Yeah, Chait over at antisemitic gay gossip rag The New Republican blasted it for being "right wing propaganda", too.
But my favorite part was that Chait pretended that it wasn't the fact of the propaganda, just the quality. He then pretended to ackowledge that there is left-wing propaganda on television, too, and that most of it is bad, too, but he doesn't cite a single example. Who thinks he would ever be able to name a single specific example of left wing propaganda on television that he'd identify as terrible? Posted by: Kensington at November 04, 2009 04:14 PM (kSpSZ) 18

Yep, the plot will change to the Visitors are super helpful and really nice. Everyone is heading for a great socialist utopia where bunnies grow on trees. That is until white religious gun-clingers freak out and start killing Visitors WITH GUNS no less. Then the Visitors will have to retaliate, even though they really don't want to.

This seems to be a reference to The Bell Curve and my friend Pres. Obama's supporters.
I find this quite offensive and not in keeping with The Big Tent that Lindsey Graham, Dede Scozzafava, Al Sharpton & myself have been working to bring about (or maintain more correctly) in the GOP.

some obvious things that could change.
1.) the bad V's will be responsible for starting pointless wars, this will be something they harp on. Hell throw Katrina in there... started by the V's.. why not? 2.) the media guy will turn against the V's and become the hero (as Donovan did in the original). 3.) Someone mentioned this last night, and I would find it hilarious. The V's turn evil obviously, but are still supported by a big time radio personality (who disagrees with the media guy mentioned in #2). Finally the twist for the new show could be that the aliens really are here to help, the good aliens have things in line, and are providing health care, peace, etc... but then a crazy right winger kills one of the leaders and this allows the darker wing of the V's to seize power and try to destroy earth. So many ways the lib writers could still turn this around. Posted by: Reality Man at November 04, 2009 05:08 PM (l0WG5) 46
I don't see a reason to read too much into Peter's demotion yet. It's perfectly possible that he is an ass that no one likes working with (co-writers on "The 4400 have said exactly that) and that his scripts are lousy, requiring extensive rewriting. (again, a complaint from the 4400) So, wait and see if the show goes off-message before deciding whether or not Peter's demotion was politically motivated. So many ways the lib writers could still turn this around. Word. I'll have to watch the remaining episodes just to see how they can twist this into an anti-conservative screed. Painful to watch but curiosity wins the day. I have a feeling the pilot was cut and that some of the scenes taken out involved the president. I was a little puzzled that the series could open with this landmark event and not include a scene of the world's most powerful man doing something about it. We did see a downed fighter, so we have to assume he ordered the military to investigate/attack. Maybe these scenes made the president look like an idiot. What better way to prop up Obama then cut the bad scenes and replace them with a heroic black president who will lead the world to freedom, but still take the best of what the Vs have to offer (universal health care!) and implement it without the nasty side effects (Vs eating us or taking our water). I don't think there was intended for subliminal criticism of Teh Obamessiah and disciples, but the howls of protest from the State Controlled Media tells us it must be true.

The rumor that they cut the premier in half sounds very plausible- it felt extremely rushed. In one hour they portrayed the aliens landing, acting friendly and inspiring devotion, being deceitful, killing the beginnings of a resistance movement, and presence of aliens on the side of the human resistance. I'm not sure that two hours wouldn't have been rushing it a bit. The Obama parallels were there, but I thought they were pretty subtle- not as blatant as I thought they'd be. Keep in mind they did throw in the dig about the aliens starting "unnecessary wars", which otherwise would've been interpreted as a dig on Bush. What's always boggling to me in situations like this is how much ideological ground the left is willing to sacrifice to maintain the metanarrative. Look what they've done here: they've defined savvy, intellectually curious, and strong as "right wing" and bad. They've reflexively defined themselves on the side of credulous, weak, dangerously naive fools.
They really see no danger in defining themselves against a situation in which things aren't always as they seem? Posted by: DoDoGuRu at November 04, 2009 06:22 PM (Xdxf8) 57

I would also agree that the premiere was edited. The story moved very quickly from intro of Visitors to Visitors Are Pod People to Heroic Resistance. It did not have the same level of build-up to revelation as the original V pilot episode, although the indications were there. I would like to know if the Visitors had provided a remedy for Climate Change to go along with their Universal Health Care offer.

Top 6 Reasons the "V" Aliens Are Unlike Obama:
6. No skeletons like Rev. Wright in the V aliens' closet. In fact, they have some sort of shell-like carapace covered with flesh, so really it's an inappropriate metaphor. 5. The V aliens are going to war against all of humanity, not just Fox News. 4. Even if you include the original '80s series, they've been on TV far less than Obama. 3. While Obama struggles with chain smoking, the only thing Anna is smoking is HOT. 2. I mean seriously, look at her. 1. Some of the aliens are not outright Communists. I liked the pilot and yes, it was rushed. The biggest disappointment was the fact that it was only an hour long.
I've already figured out how they're going to turn this into a liberal love-fest: Cheney (or their Cheney stand-in) and other popular conservatives will be revealed as Vs. Dun-dun-DUN. It was obvious in the speech given by the resistance guy - unnecessary wars, collapse of the economy... all things the libs LOVE to pin on conservatives, especially Bush. It's a bait and switch - sure anyone with a half a brain can see that this almost perfectly mirrors The One, but they'll switch it around and show that it's really those evil conservatives. I'm waiting for the speeches that start sounding like liberal perversions of Rush and Palin. Side note - interesting that they gave the original Robin's role to a boy. Impregnating the alien girl is not going to have the same impact as a human female getting impregnated by the alien male. There's a reason that role was female in the original. I'll wait to see how they handle it this time around, but I'm not too hopeful. Maybe the alien girl will turn good? Not sure on this one. Oh, and I'm still saddened by Alan Tudyk's role. Damnit. At least he'll show up later. Posted by: soulpile at November 04, 2009 08:08 PM (afWhQ) 64
I saw pieces of the last half, switching between FNC and this. I thought I watching the second part of 2 nights' worth, considering how much was revealed and set up in the snippets I saw. I wasn't even paying that much attention and I thought they were cramming too much in one hour, like they were scared they'd strain the viewers' attention span. I don't doubt this premiere was originally 2 hours. I also don't doubt it was an incredibly bad decision to chop it up like that. I was hardly fascinated, although admittedly Scott Wolf is a little cutie and the priest character has potential. However, good looks and one interesting character isn't enough to support an ensemble show. If they kill off the whiny FBI chick and her POS hoodlum son so they stop sucking airtime away from decent plot, it could work. But, they won't do that.
