| George Stephanopoulos: Last Night's Elections Big Referendum With National Implications... For Sarah PalinMmmm... she was instrumental in moving a guy from 13% to 46%. So, does that demonstrate her power? Nah.STEPHANOPOULOS: The bottom line, when there is a civil war inside the Republican Party, a Democrat can squeak through in a district that has not gone to the Democrats since about the Civil War. So, this is a big surprise for the Democrats here. I think it was a big loss for Sarah Palin. A big win for the Democrats who poured it on in the final days especially Vice President Biden who came in the final day.Do the big Republican wins in NJ and VA similarly mean "a big loss" for Barack Obama, who stumped multiple times for Corzine and Deeds? Of course not; those elections are merely reflections of anti-incumbent fervor, not any sort of "big loss" for Obama. STEPHANOPOULOS: In both states, Diane, this is really, really important. Independents now are the largest voter group in the country. They outnumber Democrats. They outnumber Republicans. And if you look back to the last three elections, 2006, 2008 and last night. These independents have become the predators of politics and incumbents are their prey. The number one issue out there right now, Diane, is the economy. Look at the exit polls in Virginia and New Jersey last night. 89 percent of voters said they were very- were worried about the economy in New Jersey. 84 percent said they were worried about the economy in Virginia. That's what is on independents' mind and the successful Republican candidates last night really focused on that.Merely "anti-incumbent" feeling. I'm sorry -- but can you remind me again about whether the man holding the most powerful office in the free world is currently an "incumbent" or not? Comments1
He's right about one thing: If Hoffman had won, it would have been a big plus for Palin. And that means that his loss hurt Palin.

NY-23 was about principle over party. Hoffmann was a distant 3rd long shot until his endorsement from Palin/Thompson/Armey. He shot up in the last week and lost by 2 points? The big loser in NY-23? The GOP. They spent $900,000 on Dede Scozzofava to have her endorse the Democrat. Conservatism won the battle against the RINO/GOP hoards. This only looks good for Sarah Palin....she outed a terrible candidate in her Party and that point was proven when Scuzzywuzzy threw her support behind the Democrat. If anything she is more popular than ever....she is the outsider, the one who is going "hey, wait a minute....". She also got a whole slew of other Repubs to fall in line behind her. I laugh at anyone who thinks she doesn't even wield more power now than before. Posted by: Cooper at November 04, 2009 01:14 PM (DXHVe) 18
From Palin's facebook:
A Victory for Common Sense and Fiscal Sanity Yesterday at 9:43pm Congratulations to the new Governors-Elect of Virginia and New Jersey! I’d also like to offer a special word of support to the new Lieutenant Governor-Elect of New Jersey, Kim Guadagno, the first woman to hold that office. Of course, the real victors in this election are the ordinary men and women who voted for positive change and a return to fiscal sanity. Your voices have been heard. The race for New York’s 23rd District is not over, just postponed until 2010. The issues of this election have always centered on the economy – on the need for fiscal restraint, smaller government, and policies that encourage jobs. In 2010, these issues will be even more crucial to the electorate. I commend Doug Hoffman and all the other under-dog candidates who have the courage to put themselves out there and run against the odds. To the tireless grassroots patriots who worked so hard in that race and to future citizen-candidates like Doug, please remember Reagan’s words of encouragement after his defeat in 1976: “The cause goes on. Don't get cynical because look at yourselves and what you were willing to do, and recognize that there are millions and millions of Americans out there that want what you want, that want it to be that way, that want it to be a shining city on a hill.” The cause goes on. - Sarah Palin Posted by: ol_dirty_/b/tard at November 04, 2009 01:15 PM (IoUF1) 19

When Republicans win, it's because of the economy. When Republicans lose, it's because of their stands on social issues. When Democrats win, it's because of their stands on social issues. When Democrats lose, it's because of the economy. Got that? Good. Commit it to memory. If anyone asks who told you to say it deny, deny, deny! The media have realized that they can maniplate the beltway GOP. They are out in full force trying to get them to support RINOs. It is obviously easier to govern when the other party is merely a light version of your own. Enough of this independent/moderate crap. This is a culture ware between marxism and liberty. Moderates are merely morons who fail to take it seriously. Rush is right in having no respect for the moderates who theoretically wishy-washy between the two parties. I don't see how this is a "big" loss for Palin. First, she greatly aided in throwing out an ultra liberal Republican who may very well have switched parties in the House and would've voted for cap and trade, the healthcare bill and card check. It would've been a disaster if Scozzafava ended up winning. Instead, a moderate Dem was put in as a benchwarmer for a year and if I'm not mistaken specifically ran against the public option. A Republican candidate will have a good chance of unseating him in 2010. Second, Obama pushed hard for the candidates in VA and NJ and walked away with bumpkiss. It'll illogical to claim that Palin, who only sent out FB posts and a little money in support of her candidates, suffered a big loss while Obama, who made mulitple personal appearances and threw in loads of money, did not. This tap dancing bullshit would shame Gene Kelly. Scozzafava's endorsement of Owens and her district's switch to him sealed Hoffman's fate. The real loser here is the local GOP officials who believed this woman was a legit Repub and the NRCC who put up money for her and attack ads against Hoffman. Fuck them and that horse they bet on. Sarah Palin is only powerful, not all-powerful. She definitely put her political weight and reputation behind McDonnell, Christie and Hoffman, and managed to humiliate the White House and the DNC only in two out of three of those races. But she managed to wake up the RNC and the NRCC in the third race, and made it clear that the liberal faux-Democrat was not going to beat the real Democrat, that the only chance of defeating Owens in NY-23 lay with a real right-of-center candidate.
And taking a nobody to within a few points of victory -- a victory which but for the perfidy of the so-called Republican would have been his -- is a pretty clear affirmation of Palin's power. Posted by: stuiec at November 04, 2009 01:30 PM (rBLs5) 52

That's absolutely right. When the Democrats are willing to claim "bi-partisan" support when just one RINO votes for a Democrat bill, each RINO in Congress represents a detriment to the Republican Party. The worst disservice McCain did in office, to my mind, was his organizing the Gang of Fourteen to undercut his party and his President. Perhaps the worst part of it was that it trained Lindsay Graham to do the same thing. Posted by: stuiec at November 04, 2009 01:35 PM (rBLs5) 60

We've got them on the run so let's keep up the pressure.

I'm not sure if Shep was the one on Fox repeating the: not since the civil war talking point - but Bob Bechel was... Bob was also rewriting history and blaming Palin for the loss. Hey Bob I got a suggestion for you go back a couple weeks and look at the lead Owens had prior to the uproar about Scozzi. Hey he just gets his marching orders every morning from the White House phone con and says what ever is ordered up, if Axel tomorrow said the "One" was declaring war on puppies, he would run it as a front page major scoop story. The propaganda media like him and Lapdog Obermann or "Tingle Legs" Christy or “Beggin” Sanchez or “Soupy” Anderson continue to parade their lack of honesty, integrity, creditability as a badge of honor, because they know the “One” loves them. “It is better to die on your feet facing the enemy than exist on your knees”

"a Democrat can squeak through in a district that has not gone to the Democrats since about the Civil War."
Yeah, except for in 65 out of the last 92 years in which the seat Owens just won was won by a Democrat!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NY-23 This is fucking outrageous. Qwinn Posted by: Qwinn at November 04, 2009 03:29 PM (SxA2Q) Posted by: Y-not at November 04, 2009 03:34 PM (sey23) 100

George participates in a WH conference call at least 3 X a week. So he does have the benefit of their brilliant insight. The best prediction George ever made was that if the Democrats took the House and Senate that there would be no troops in Iraq or Afghanistan within 6 mos.

The moose hunter from Alaska demonstrated her keen aim, attention to detail, and ability to lead a political target in the last few weeks. That should give her serious consideration for a 2012 candidacy. Or we can just follow the Hoffman principle and vote for her anyway, instead of the SCM-approved RINO or weak-kneed moderate, right?
Remember, Sarah Palin is no Joe Biden. She is no Barack Obama. And she is no RINO, either. Posted by: exdem13 at November 04, 2009 06:31 PM (lYKj1) 103
"So, does that demonstrate her power?"
Does anybody else think that Hamond started moving up when Palins stepped in and stopped moving up when the NRCC (or what ever it was) moved in and started telling him how to do it? ("it" meaning losing contact with the troops he needed to go vote). I see a pattern here. Posted by: Larry Sheldon at November 04, 2009 07:30 PM (OmeRL) 104
