Gibbs: You're So Stupid I Can Tell You Anything
Update: Gibbs Apparently Reading Kos for His Spin

These elections had nothing to do with the president. Except the one maybe where we won.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs today said that Republican gubernatorial victories in Virginia and New Jersey do not portend anything for President Obama, but the dynamics and the Democratic candidate's success in the special election in Upstate New York has ramifications for the GOP.

"I think the data from the gubernatorial races demonstrates that voters went to the polls in those two contests to talk about and work though very local issues that didn't involve the president," Gibbs said, invoking exit polls indicating that most voters in those two states said that President Obama was not a factor in their votes.

In the New York race, Gibbs said, "we watched a party pick a candidate and then purge that candidate. And I think the result was an election (in which) that district sent its first non-Republican to Congress since before the Civil War."

In related news:

President Obama, looking very indifferent about
Creigh Deeds' candidacy, distancing himself and keeping
completely out of this meaningless affair
which concerns, after all, nothing but intensely local issues,
and not at all yoking Deeds' political fortunes to his own

As a formal matter Jake Tapper is simply wrong; in Virginia, for example, 39% of voters said Obama was a factor in their vote. About half of that 39% voted to support him and about half voted to oppose him. This may be a wash, but it is incorrect to say Obama was not "a factor."

The only lesson Gibbs wants to draw from a big Republican victory is that Republicans are in disarray. In such a bad state that we nearly won an election even though the Republican candidate suspended her campaign and endorsed the Democrat.

Here's another lesson: Democrats were handed a victory on a sliver platter due to shenanigans in the Republican nominating process and party strife and our actual official candidate endorsing her Democratic opponent, and even with all these normally-disastrous circumstances, we very nearly won.

There is no doubt that the GOP in NY23 was in disarray. And yet: We very nearly won anyway.

Now, what does Gibbs think will happen in races in which there is a primary, one candidate prevails, and the party goes forward united without splitting the vote between a candidate and spoiler?

Or is he counting on Dede Scozzofava to play spoiler in every election in 2010?

And here's yet another lesson, noted well by the Blue Dogs and the twenty Democratic Senators in red states:

n New Jersey, the news is even worse. Chris Christie beat Jon Corzine by four points in a state that went for Obama by 15 points — and where a Republican hadn’t won in over ten years. Unlike Virginia, Obama campaigned heavily for Corzine, calling him his “partner” and putting his prestige on the line. Joe Biden made a couple of campaign appearances, too, and the White House supervised the campaign in the final weeks after Corzine initially fell behind. Obama made the argument for Corzine all about Obama — and New Jersey, one of the bluest states in the nation, rejected him.

Obama will still be president for another three years, but the mystique is gone. New Jersey just taught Democrats in Congress a big lesson — Obama can’t get them re-elected. Being the President’s “partner” on his radical agenda is not a winning position; it wasn’t for Corzine in what should have been a secure blue state, and it certainly won’t be in moderate or conservative districts and states held by Democrats in the House and Senate.

That is a huge blow to Obama and his agenda, as Democrats now have to consider unpopular bills for ObamaCare and cap-and-trade in an entirely new light.

Indeed, a Blue Dog representative even said as much, pretty much offering up last night's election results as significantly influencing whether the Blue Dogs will bow to liberal pressures, or if they'll start exerting some serious pressure back on the liberals.

Here's yet another lesson, and one that should give the Democrats shivering douchechills: Rasumussen, the oft-derided "Republican Robopoll" currently putting Obama's job approval at 46%, pretty much nailed New Jersey's final results:

obopolls. Rasmussen's final poll, showing a 46-43-8 Christie win, was pretty damn accurate. Polls using conventional human operators tended to show Corzine ahead. They were wrong.** ... If you have a choice between Rasmussen and, say, the presitigous N.Y.Times, go with Rasmussen! ... Why this is important: Rasmussen's polls tend to show the highest level of opposition to health care reform. If they accurately predict who will turn out to vote, they may signify big potential trouble for Democrats in lower-turnout mid-term elections. The Democratic Congressional id--at least the part that represents primordial existential fear of non-reelection--is throbbing.

Need Spin? Go to the Moderate, Centrist Kos! The cobloggers tell me that Gibbs' factoid about Democrats not losing that seat "since the civil war" is in fact wrong, and comes from Kos' post last night.

Unless the "civil war" you're talking about was the 1992 election. A Democrat won that seat in 1993.

29 To deconstruct the current "R's in disarray/civil war/fight for the soul of the party" meme put forward by the libs and leftists a little more...

Clearly one of their goals is to make the Republican party be a monolithic thing. You're only allowed one strategy, and a simple one at that! Make your choice! And they mis-identify the choice to boot. Moderate (i.e. mostly liberal) or Extreme Right Wing?

In fact, Ace has identified the real way to run this, and I sincerely hope that enough people who are making these calls come to same conclusion. Here is our strategy: We are conservatives, and will strive to put into office the most conservative candidate that we think an electorate will support.

But its frustrating to watch and hear these news people blather on about moderate versus conservative, as if a successful strategy can't accommodate both. Actually, some of them probably know that it's the winning path and so they try to get people to think it's about something else.

The only polls showing Obama was or was not a factor are the exit polls.  We need to keep in mind that exit polls are conducted in person.  For this reason, people were probably reluctant to express their displeasure with Obama.

If it were possible to conduct exit polls using the same impersonal technology as Rasmussen polls, we would probably see more honest responses from folks.

83 As happy as I am about the outcome of the NJ race, one should not understate the extent to which Corzine is just a giant douchnozzle.  I mean, most of my Dem neighbors (i.e. all my neighbors except for one Indian guy, Vishnu bless him) voted for Corzine, but none of them like the guy - in fact most think he's a total douche, especially after the SUV crash thing.  It is hard to win when even your natural base freely admits that you're an ass.

The other big factor was no Barrack Obama motivating "yout voters" and minorities to get out to the polls, just a contest between two dumpy-looking white guys.  Of course, there will be no B.O. next year either.

95 The problem with Gibbs's take, and the MSM in pushing it, is that they only people they are going to convince is Dem voters.

Which isn't a problem at all if you are looking to get rid of a lot of Dems in '10.

Keep telling disaffected Republican, Conservative and Independent voters that the Dem policies still enjoy a mandate, and you end up encouraging the voters against those policies to come to the polls, while giving little motivation to the supporters of those policies to do so.

Why should 20 somethings drag themselves out of their Mom's basements when the WH keeps telling them "nothing to see here, everything is A-OK"?

101 Late last night I heard one of the talking heads, it may have been Michael Barone, who was talking about the NY-23 was going to be redistricted this year to ensure the Dems can hold onto this seat. I don't know much about it but basically they are going to split it into 2 separate districts to be absorbed by adjacent solidly Democrat districts. So this may have been the last chance for this area to get a conservative anyway.

This is correct.  Lawrence O'Donnell was using the same logic to claim "democrats don't care what happens in NY23.  They actually wouldn't mind losing it."

I didn't watch Lawrence last night, but I'm guessing he took a train ride into the Land of Make Believe and he never made these statements.

108 Hoffman is going to crush Owens in 2010. Provided the moronic Republicans nominate him again. Knowing them, they'll nominate Owens.

Another big story is that Westchester county went Red. Astorino kicked Andy Spano to the curb. This is a fairly blue county, although Northern Westchester is very red. In fact Republicans practically swept the Northern Towns. The papers were trying to save Dem face by saying they won the Mayor of White Plains, but because of NY's stupid election laws, Bradley ran on all the lines. That's right Democrat, Republican, Conservative, Independent. And he got 100% of the vote.

A third big story is how Republicans won big in muni elections in Connecticut. Not exactly a red state either.

Dems should be shitting themselves.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind about redistricting.

If the redistricting is not done because of population decline the total number of seats does not change. If the Dems pull a higher concentration of Dems into one district it results in a higher number of Repubs in a district somewhere.

If they are doing it because of seat loss, even though we may lose a House seat that could have been Republican, overall NY is losing seats AND presidential electors which minimizes liberal influence in the general elections.

119 Tonight's big lesson by kos Tue Nov 03, 2009 at 09:32:52 PM PST

There will be much number-crunching tomorrow, but preliminary numbers (at least in Virginia) show that GOP turnout remained the same as last year, but Democratic turnout collapsed. This is a base problem, and this is what Democrats better take from tonight:

If you abandon Democratic principles in a bid for unnecessary "bipartisanship", you will lose votes. If you water down reform in favor of Blue Dogs and their corporate benefactors, you will lose votes. If you forget why you were elected -- health care, financial services, energy policy and immigration reform -- you will lose votes.

Tonight proved conclusively that we're not going to turn out just because you have a (D) next to your name.....

___________________________________________________________

So let me get this straight, it is horrible for libs to run "moderates" because, well, they lose.  However, conservatives MUST run "big tent" candidates or they will...lose?!?!?  Is Markos really this delusional?  I give it about 8 hours before C'fn'J gets his marching orders from Kos and starts trying to legitimize this theory on LGF.

Hoffman didn't live there,

True, but moot. He could have easily moved the eight miles in order to claim residence in the district. This is common with public officials, school superintendents, etc., but they don't move until they're offered the job.

he didn't know the issues facing the district

Of the three candidates, he was the only one whose ads even mentioned an issue facing the district (keeping Fort Drum open).

and he was lousy on TV.

I read a lot about Reagan and Teh Fred around here, and I'm sure it's not all about their on-camera time. There's more to politics than telegenics.

Which, in one sentenace, summarizes why Markos knows as much about politics as I know about playing in the NBA. Nothing.

Markos, you are clearly not too bright, so let me walk this through for your real slow. It was an off year election. In every off-year election, what you see is a reduction in turnout. That often reduces these fights down to which side is more motivated. In this case, Republicans are more motivated. They were able to get out the same number of votes in an off year as they did for a Presidential year. And what is motivating them: your guy. The 2 big issues in Virginia - the economy and health care. Somehow, I can't see you spinning this as merely a "local" issue.

Also, Markos, your analysis does not account for the 18 point swing in independents voting. The Republican governor got an 18 point bounce out of independents that John McCain did not. If McCain gets the 18 points, he wins Virginia.

Finally, Markos, Virginia proves one point I have been arguing about: the large youth vote for Obama was not necessarily about what he stood for but more of a fad that swept through college campuses a year ago. It became a cool, trendy thing to do - lets go to an Obama rally. It was not about the ideas he had, or the policies he articulated, or about the New Democratic Party. It was about being seen and seeing at the hot new nightclub for college kids. 3 years from now, will it be just as cool, just as trendy. Or is your boy about to become the disco/New Wave/Grunge fad of modern American politics.

"If they are doing it because of seat loss, even though we may lose a House seat that could have been Republican, overall NY is losing seats AND presidential electors which minimizes liberal influence in the general elections."

Redistricting will be done after the 2010 census, which will be conducted next summer. It probably will not be finished in time for the 2010 midterms, though certainly before 2012. My guess is that New York will lose one seat in the House, perhaps two, as people flee New York for more business-friendly states - unless the administration decides to use "scientific sampling" to juice the results in favor of blue states, in which case I expect to see WWIII in the courts.
