Owens killed Hoffman in Scozzer's home area. She threw the race to the Democrat.

Yeah, great call on her, New York County Republican chairs. She conducts herself with so much "forthrightness." Great pick. Great, great pick.

A final update from Drew, which I was going to post before I saw the race had been called:

Rob Ryan is on now and is saying it's still close and may not be called tonight.
He's starting to spin it as a "big win for the Conservative Party and Doug Hoffman" considering where the race was 3 weeks ago.
Moral victory talk is never good.

A Positive Take-Away from... Allah? He's actually upbeat.

Points to take away from the loss: (1) PPP’s last poll was way, waaaay off; (2) Scozzafava’s endorsement must have had some impact on her supporters, as it erased the five-point lead Hoffman held in the last Siena poll after she dropped out; (3) third-party challenges, while sometimes warranted, are a very risky proposition (attention Glenn Beck!); (4) the win in New Jersey, where The One staked his own political capital in campaigning for Corzine, was huge compared to the loss here; and (5) as I said over the weekend, the actual result of this race is unimportant. The point in torpedoing Scozzafava and swinging the GOP behind Hoffman was to send a message to the Republican leadership that only fiscal conservatives will be tolerated henceforth, and that message has been sent even if Owens wins a squeaker. The loss is disappointing, but it’s a detail on otherwise great night.

Although we lost, I repeat my previous statement that this was cost-free and therefore helpful move. It's "teaching the GOP a lesson" in a smart way, in a single election (for a term that will last only one year), that will send a short sharp shock that while we may accept RINOs where we absolutely have to, we damnsure won't be accepting them where we can win with a conservative candidate.

We're not just going to support liberals just to win; what is the point of "winning" then?

Obviously a conservative candidate -- one of the in-district conservative candidates actually favored by many of the GOP county committees -- would have carried this district easily.

Instead, people decided to play it cute with games about having a woman candidate, having someone "the money" was happy with, and doing favors for some stupid GOP chairwoman's BFF Dede Scozzofava.

And the GOP can see there will be bloody revolts if this happens again. And that there will, in fact, be money for a more conservative candidate, too.

On the upside, as Karl Rove notes, Hoffman got what he got being unknown 30 days ago. He'll not be an unknown come primary time next year and already has a clearly solid base.

20 This is not like a typical "conservative" vs "moderate" REPUBLICAN issue. DeDe Scozzafava showed herself as being a true democrat when she endorsed Bill Owens, and therefore any kind of "republican-type" principles she might have had were revealed for what they were - nothing.

So voting in DeDe as the Rep for NY23rd would have been the same as voting in a pro-Obama democrat.

We need to get a new candidate for that district who can express themselves and the message more effectively. Doug Hoffman was the only choice for real conservatives in this race. But I'm sure there is someone more charismatic.

29 You folks need to realize that NY-23 is a bucolic, northeast liberal Republican town. Lots of colleges, vacation towns, and huge dose of unionized state workers whose love of their guns cause them to usually lean GOP. It is largely Vermont in New York. More on the libertarian side of things, although there is certainly a strong socially conservative population.

Hoffman gained steam when he was seen as an outsider. When Hoffman went from being an outsider to being the Republican, the conservative Republican, candidate of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, the blue-ish bloods turned up their noses.

Had Scozzafava stayed in the race, Hoffman would have won it. Why else do you think she dropped out? It obviously wasn't to graciously help Hoffman. Her team knew her core support was more union guys with guns than movement conservatives. She was a union gal, and they followed her advice, since the other guy was saying "I won't vote to take your guns, but I will vote for more stimulus to keep your jobs another year or two".

39 Disappointing for sure... but I come out of it feeling just as confident for next year as I did coming in. NY-23 really was just one of those weird little American political dramas, the only way it really would have had national significance is if Hoffman won, I'm not spinning. If he'd won, it would have certainly energized conservatives even more. As it stands, take a step back, recognize that the NY-23 election was weird as hell, figure out what went wrong (other than the obvious pick of Dede), and I think they won't find much other than that that went wrong, make damn sure you put all reasonable resources into taking NY-23 next year, tell Newt Gingrich to take a long vacation somewhere, and start finding the best conservative candidates we can RIGHT NOW AS IN TOMORROW MORNING and start setting up for them to be the GOP candidates in October. I think and hope that Hoffman's loss, looked at objectively, will break more benefit for the GOP in 2010 than if he had won. Particularly since he lost so closely here, and because he and his campaign certainly were above the whole "conservatives vs. RINOs fued." Follow Hoffman's example, the target is Pelosi and Reid and Obama, not ourselves!

It looks like New York has added another Democrat Representative.

The votes as of 11:47 PM were Owens 59,388 (49%); Hoffman 55,002 (45%); Dede (RNCC choice choice who endorsed Owens) 6,683 (6%).

Ballot machine failures in Fulton County (23 Districts) prevented these votes from being reported. These votes, together with some 10,000 to 11,000 absentee ballots will not be counted until tomorrow.

To win, Hoffman would need about 60% of the untabulated votes, to overcome a 3,735 deficit. Possible, but unlikely.

Spoiler votes for Republican-candidate turned Democrat-endorsing liberal RNCC-nominated Scozzafava were 6,061. A count that would have given Hoffman a clear majority and the win.

The lessons I see in this are:

Conservatism Can Win, but not when the Republican Party supports non-conservative candidates. And, Republicans cannot win without Conservative support.

The GOP/RNC and Newt have got some 'splainin' to do to garner the support of Conservatives.

P.S. If the margin was only 4% the vote fraud was likely great enough to have stolen it. Kind of like saying, "Nice Republic you've got there, it would be a shame if anything, er, inopportune might happen to it."

He did make it a squeaker in a liberal state so kudos to him and to our New York brothers and sisters, be happy with your choice.After the last elections it should be blazingly clear that elections "do" have consequenses and I do hope that it isn't politics as usual in NY for New Yorkers sake.

The one great take on this particular race is how the horn was torn off the RINO for all to see when she dropped out and supported Owens which leaves no doubt as to how she would have voted on important ideological issues.Thank God it will be a Democrat making the decisions and taking the responsibility for towing this administrations line and not a twin with a (R) after her name.

And let us hope that former conservatives who backed this woman are shamed into understanding that many other conservatives are counting principals much more so than counting seats, yes there is a political reality that needs to be met to become effective and yes we have a big tent for decent hard working Americans but nipping this type of candidate in the bud says loud and clear that we wish to avoid sabotage of our parties principals even if we have to wait another four years.

In any case, it was a good night and I hope to see Mr. Hoffman again for the next election cycle.

The point in torpedoing Scozzafava is if you want Fiscal Conservatism, you are not going to get it by electing socially Liberal Gig Government spenders.

75 A win for Hoffman would have been great but given that Scuzzyflava was more liberal than Owens this is not the worst case scenario in my view. This seat was specifically targeted by Obama for a flip to blue. John McHugh voted like a D most of the time and got tapped to be Sec'y of the Army in exchange for being one of the 8 R's in the House who voted for Cap-n-Tax. It's not as if having that seat in the R column was getting us anything in the first place.

The Republican party in NY really needs to get it's act together fast and recruit competitive candidates for Governor and Gillibrand's Senate seat. Those could go our way but I am sure they will blow it.

I'm suprised that Hoffman lost and Christi won, but Hoffman could be in a good position to run again. Owens marketed himself as a moderate Dem right? He needs to be held to that; Scozzafava blew up in the faces of the RNC, so maybe, just maybe they'll learn their lesson (or they should). This could work out ok in the long run.

I hear there are reports of problems with the absentee ballots in NJ though -- be prepared for some challenge to that vote. Although it would be stupid, I think, for the Dems to do this.

80 Upstate NY has a lot of weapons-grade stupid, but Hoffman's run shows that even that can be dented. That is a massive accomplishment. The problem with Upstate NY is that it has been a welfare state for SO LONG that people have stopped trying to improve themselves. They have either given up or they never cared in the first place. I sat in a McDonalds the other day and listened to four completely ignorant individuals try to discuss this race. They couldn't name *any* of the candidates, just "the woman" and "the other guy" (I assumed they meant Owens) and "some other guy" (Hoffman). On top of that, they had all of the facts wrong. And they were sitting there trying to discuss it. If things are going to change in New York, there needs to be a crack in the entitlement armor, and there needs to be education and inspiration. Something needs to motivate these people to get off their asses and stop waiting for shit to come to them. Successful conservatives are going to need to go through local media to get it done, like it or not.
