"V" Thread

On ABC, now.

West-Coasters should probably not read if they're worried about spoilers.

Though how big a spoiler could be contained in the pilot of a remake of an episodic tv show I don't know.

Let me blow one for you right now: The Visitors are not what they pretend to be.

Movie Review

Red (200

Starring Brian Cox. It's about a man and his dog. And a bunch of assholes. I don't want to give too much away but it's Old Yeller meets Roadhouse meets Gran Torino.

I liked it because it the movie did something very rare, nowadays: It told a story. It was like reading a novel. Everything unfolded perfectly. It isn't a feel-good movie, that's for sure. But it's a good story with good acting. No frills.

I give it a solid 7.5 out of 10 stars.

Show kinda jumped the shark at 7:21. It's clear the writers have run out of ideas.

Posted by: Entropy at November 03, 2009 08:29 PM (cok/k)

27 so they FIRED the executive producer Thursday!!! and replaced him with..wait for it, the producer of NBC GE show Chuck! then after the rave review that ran in Miami and Chicago in which the comparison to Obama Hopium was stressed and the critic really enjoyed it, the NYT 'brutally' ripped the show in its review today

as suspected the idiots at the network are trying tio make a kinder gentler fascist alien invasion to avoid Obama comparisons

they will ruin the show

32 SciFi (I refuse to spell it incorrectly) had a marathon of the original two miniseries and season on Sunday afternoon and I watched a lot of it for the first time in twenty something years. Some of the stuff was a little hokey (in particular the ending of the second miniseries) but all in all it held up okay. I doubt I'll watch much if any of the remake, who knows.

I don't think a show like this can last for too many seasons, eventually, you want to know if the good guys win. I'm still surprised that the networks haven't stolen the telenovela concept from Latin America, because I think V as a concept would work pretty well as a one or two season series.

40 'Chuck' jumped the sharked early on for me when it decided to use a really well known arcade game, Missile Command, and make it into a plot element including a fake company and programmer behind the game. Guys, instead of reassigning credit for something whose creators are still alive and their history well documented, make up your own game. A mock-up of an old 8-bit game wouldn't have cost that much.

They did annoying crap like that on that show a lot. The only reason I saw it after the first few episodes was that my Geek Squad employee brother had to see it.

Posted by: Mama AJ at November 03, 2009 08:42 PM (Be4xl)

46 The original mini-series in pre-production hired a pair of Science Fiction writers to try to make the premise believable. The producer, less than five minutes into their presentation, asked 'Why do I have to listen to this?' Meeting over.

So they took their consulting and wrote 'Footfall.' A book that still make more sense than anything Hollywood has ever put on a screen.

84 I will at this moment put down a $10 bet that, since the Visitors were offering universal healthcare, a major plot switch from the original series is going to happen:

I say, the visitors will be good... but there will be an American insurrection against them, that is put down.  Sort of a "rednecks try to kill the benefactors" plot twist if you will.

That's my prediction... that in the end, the V's are good, but the series will be about a period of turmoil brought about by conservative types who resist every good thing in the universe.

110 If they toss that away and make their own plot incoherant to avoid offending actual goddamn utopianistic idiots.... yeesh.

You do realize that you are talking about an administration that has been whining like a little bitch about the one TV network that won't polish its knob? The same administration that tried to bar said network from the press pool?

Incoherency is on the way, my man.

Was a fan of the original in the 1980s. Looks a little campy today.

The ABC remake 'looks' good so far, special effects and make-up wise.  Storyline has obvious reflections of the political crap today, and sort of liked the terrorist cell element (but better not see the storyline go south with insinuating the WOT was manufactured, but they'll disappoint ... a given).

Disappointed the typical 2 hour opening pilot for such shows wasn't the case.  Will be interesting to see how much of the 80s show storyline they fall back on, and how much 'new' (something near impossible for today's Hollywood machine) they come up with.

124 In the original series, the idea that the Visitors couldn't imitate our voices was absurd, so that was dropped for the redux. The idea that they'd want our water is also absurd, so I think that's out. They may like to eat people but I think their motive is to colonize or just use the planet as a base. And they'll probably work anal probulating in there, somewhere.

Salem 124, One possible use for Earthlings might be to enlist the populace as terraformers on other planets. You don't want to waste valuable men colonising an inhospitable planet - so you send in the serfs, and when they're done taming it, then you move in as the ruling elite.

If they just wanted Earth's resources they could have just pounded the place back to the Triassic. Wouldn't even need nukes; a few big rocks would do it.

First impressions from an old fart who watched the original series:

Main alien chick needs a couple of sandwiches and some goddamn hair.

FBI mom looks like Ann Coulter, if Ann Coulter ate food. I'd hit it like a whiplash fender-bender - from behind, necessitating several visits to the chiropractor, a large prescription of oxycodone, and a ginned-up lawsuit afterward.

Disenchanted reporter dude is the illegitimate love child of Michael J. Fox and Hugh Grant.

Besides all that, it had no mysterious goings-on, uncertainty, or doubt among the human characters like the first miniseries did. Nothing to evoke charges of paranoia from the gracious but suspicious benefactors, suspicions to be later vindicated. Nope, they only had near-worshipful acceptance or rabid completely justifiable opposition. Not even anybody saying "how come you guys look just like us hairless monkeys when you come from the other side of the Milky Way?"

I was rather underwhelmed.  Sadly.

It looked like they took a two-hour pilot and chopped down to one hour.  Too much of it was forced, without sufficient build up.  Maybe that's because everyone already knows that they are reptilian and so that aspect would not be a surprise, but still.

Also, the V-Obama parallels seem a bit overstated as well.  At least at this point.

All that being the case, it is still a million times better than that piece of worthless crap called Stargate: Universe.

I like how the kid had to fill out a form, in a common paper brochure, in order to join a club created by frickin' ALIENS. Am I the only person on Earth who would find it odd that visitors from another planet call themselves Visitors, shorten that appellation to "Vees", and need your mom's signature if your under the age of majority? Isn't it a little too convenient that their culture meshes so perfectly into our existing legal regimes? I'd think I was being punked right off the bat.

155 It hasn't jumped the shark yet, but I'm pessimistic so waiting for it.

After the gossip rumors it'd be 'toned down due to current social similarities' AKA Obama...I was incredibly surprised it was so...brutal.

Not just the Universal Healthcare bit. The journalist totally folding bit was..very surprising. Add unto that the..sorry, Godwin, the Hitler Youth style signing up kids for Visitor Ambassador.

Granted, there were, and still are, many elements that make the 'rebellion' look like violent crackpots.

So I'm still waitin for the Anti-V's to come out as...French 'Youths' or Palestinian 'freedom fighters'.

Still, am VERY surprised they went that far. This is a good sign.

I liked the idea of cells of V's being here the whole time.

Yeah, were the falling crucifix and jet fighter at the beginning seemed to be symbols of the soon-to-be replacement of religion and military/defense by the Vs.  Still, as others have noticed, you know the creators (or their replacements) will mess it up in order to avoid "hurting" the Prez.
