NJ Update: CNN Exits Show Big Lead for Christie Among Independents

Looking Up: Blowout lead among indies:

This seems pretty darn big: In New Jersey, CNN's exit poll says Christie won independents 58-33 over Corzine, with indies making up 27 percent of the electorate.

NJ Results: Very little of the vote in yet.

Big Update of Dubious Provenance : Geraghty is not vouching for this number at all but he's re-tweeting a claim: Corzine and Christie knotted up at 47 apiece, according, supposedly, to leaked exit polls.

...

Turnout Poor In Newark, Other Democratic Strongholds: Corzine needs minorities to turn out enough to make up 20% of voters. It appears unlikely. Although turnout has ticked up in Newark, no one is talking about strong turnout. Even Democratic hands will only predict, wink-wink, a "narrow win."

More on NJ Turnout from Mary Katharine Ham.

...

Pretty damn good news:

In NY-23 despite the presence more or less of two Republican candidates on the ballot, Doug Hoffman is winning 71% of the GOP vote to Bill Owens’ 67% of the Democratic vote. Hoffman leads Owens 52-30 with independents.

In New Jersey Chris Christie is getting 82% of the Republican vote while Jon Corzine is at 72% of the Democratic vote. Christie leads 52-29 with independents. …

From the high levels of party unity it’s clear that Republicans voters see the path back to power will require staying on the same page. And whether it’s because the Democrats have bad candidates or they’re unhappy with President Obama, independents are giving the GOP very high levels of support. It should be the best Republican election night since George W. Bush got reelected.

Christie, though, is not in a good position. He may be getting more of the Republican vote than Corzine is getting of the Democratic vote, but the fact is New Jersey has a lot more Democrats than Republicans. Hopefully doing well with independents will provide votes to put him over the top, but it's going to be near thing: We probably won't know until late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Whoops! Maybe not (fingers crossed knock wood spit). Turnout in McCain counties in NJ heavy.

I want to preface this by noting that all of this is based only on the early voting, and is based on about a half-dozen polling places in every county in New Jersey; some known as historically Republican districts, some known as historically swing districts, and some known as historically Democratic districts.

A trusted source tells me that as of noon, total turnout in the GOP the swing districts in NJ is significantly outpacing turnout in Democrat districts. The turnout ratio is not quite two to one, but it's not that far from it.

Caveats Geraghty adds: Democrats vote later, etc.

Also, small sample size here.

Still.

Thanks to AHFF Geoff.

2 In New Jersey, nearly every poll before the election had Christie winning with independents, usually by double digits. Right now, I suspect it is still a turnout game.

4 The two heaviest turnout counties are Hunterdon, which McCain carried by 13.3 percent over Barack Obama and Morris County, which McCain carried by 8.1 percent.

The phenomenon is not uniform; Union Country's turnout is described as above Ocean's, and Obama carried Union by 27 percent; Ocean County's turnout is described as "good," and McCain carried that county by 18 percent.

Hudson County and Essex County were described as "light." Hudson County is heavily Democratic, with Obama carrying it by 46 percent last year; he carried Essex County with 75 percent of the vote.

Salem County's turnout is described as "unbelievably sleepy"; Obama carried that county by 4 percent.

Sort of amazing when voters are offered a clear choice of philosophies, unclouded by doubts of "true party adherence".

My next burning desire is to see how many "Actual Conservative" Democrats can be flipped to the GOP.

Independents tend to vote by the adage, "Fool me once, shame on you;  fool me twice, shame on me."  People who identify as members of a particular party will tend to be more forgiving of their own party's politicians breaking promises or underdelivering, because to criticize those politicians involves taking some of the blame themselves.

Thus, compared to self-identified Democrats, independents are less likely to feel the need to stick by and justify their prior votes for Obama and his fellow Democrats.

Today's results are what Axelrod feared could happen if the movement continued to gain steam.  The VA and NY-23 wins are just going to embolden teabaggers further now.

There wasn't even any pretext of objectivity in Minnesota.  That was brazen theft, pure and simple.  Just proof that if you have brass balls, can lie with a straight face, and have a compliant judiciary, you can get away with anything.

Yeah, but who knows now?  The media is so biased, I wouldn't be surprised if they do what they did in the Kerry polls which is to release fake info so as to buoy the spirits of Democrats.  Maybe they're accurate.  Maybe they're overestimating R support to account for unintended biases inherent in exit polling.  Maybe more Rs are talking to exit pollsters this year.

114 It is really amazing how we're just considering fraud to be de rigeur.  The fight is in the courts.  We have to start making the argument that even a whiff of voter fraud disenfranchises legitimate voters.  For example, a GOP state AG should charge any case of voter fraud with millions of counts.  If somebody knowingly commits voter fraud, they disenfranchise every single voter.

If a vote is counted that shouldn't have been -- based on the law before the election took place -- then it disenfranchises voters who voted properly.

And we have to use the word "disenfranchise".

Just voted for Christie in West Orange. Took about 7 minutes, all in (so get out there and vote if you haven't already!). Brought my 11 year old in with me (his class is all over election-type stuff right now as its topical).

Showed him the red line, he helped push some buttons, and then he hit the big red button (I like that the button to cast your ballot is red!).

Aww. My parents took me to the poll when they voted for Nixon in 1960. For years I thought a political machine was that big thing with the levers where you cast your vote.

118 Cynically, but accurately, we assume that Dems will steal close elections. Anything under 1% is up for grabs. In NJ, I fear the rules have changed. Since the ultimate enforcement on the law is Holder's Justice dept. the local Dems might feel frisky enough to try and steal an election that's within 2, 3 or even 5%.

226 In 2005, Gloucester county was a perfect microcosm of the rest of NJ, having almost the exact same vote % for Corzine as the final tally in the state.  In 2008, again, Gloucester County's vote % for Obama was very, very close to the state-wide average.

Why do I say that?  Because with 78% of the precincts reporting, Christie leads in Gloucester County by 2.5 points.

Still to close to call, but I'd say that's good news.

And with 92% of the precincts reporting, Christie is leading by 3.3 points in Gloucester County.

Posted by: Bill Mitchell at November 03, 2009 09:46 PM (Gm9rd)

322 309 - I grew up there, haven't been back in 12 years but from what I know

Dem counties - Essex, Union, Hudson, Camden, Mercer, Passaic, Bergen, Atlantic

GOP counties - Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Morris, Salem, Somerset, Ocean, Cape May, Cumberland

Mixed - Middlesex, Monmouth, Gloucester, Burlington

Caveat - The Dems hold most of the counties with the much high populations

Posted by: kbdabear at November 03, 2009 09:46 PM (sYxEE)

323 If Burlington and Salem are republican, Christie could win this by double-digits.

324 50-44 with 58% reporting

Posted by: Peaches at November 03, 2009 09:47 PM (9Wv2j)

325 It also depends how much of the other counties have reported. for example a heavy Corzine county may have only reported 1% so far, we will just have to see here.

329 Do ya'll remember that mayor that sounded drunk election night in a county in Illinois who was holding up the vote? OMG if I was not so pissed off that night it would have been funny. I see that crap happening now.

Posted by: 2010orBust at November 03, 2009 09:49 PM (/mbDE)

330 Who is your friend and what do they have to do with the election?  Sit on their ass and watch the results like the rest of us?

Posted by: Editor at November 03, 2009 09:50 PM (YX6i/)

331 One caveat, looks like some of the heavy dem counties are only about 75% in.  any of the Republican counties in more.

We'll see.

Posted by: Bill Mitchell at November 03, 2009 09:50 PM (Gm9rd)

332 again 100k votes this late is tough to overcome.  especially since burlingto probably wont hurt Christie and Salem will help him.

334 I'm looking at the "color" codes for this

If Corzine only took a high percentage in Essex and Hudson, he might just lose this too much for ACORN to cover

Posted by: kbdabear at November 03, 2009 09:52 PM (sYxEE)

335 Whoever asked about that 50K vote batch at once for Corzine, it probably came from Hudson County. They're so crooked there that Corzine would get those votes if he was dead.

Posted by: kbdabear at November 03, 2009 09:53 PM (sYxEE)

336 good news, burlington coming in for Christie by 6%.

Posted by: Bill Mitchell at November 03, 2009 09:54 PM (Gm9rd)

337 The kiss of death for Christie will be, of course, if there is are "recounts."

338 Good news.  84% of essex is in and Corzine is down by 100,000.

Posted by: Bill Mitchell at November 03, 2009 09:55 PM (Gm9rd)

339 Remember when a 7-point GOP lead with 64% of precincts in felt safe, and you didn't worry about things like voter fraud?

Yeah.  Me neither.

Posted by: crusty the wonder sock at November 03, 2009 09:55 PM (7lAxC)

340 I'm getting a very strong feeling that this race is over.  I checked the estimated voter turnout per county and compared it to turnout in 2005.  To put it bluntly, turnout was higher in red-leaning counties than blue counties.  Couple that with the excellent performance Christie had in these counties, and I'd say this is a race that's going to be outside the realm of a recount.

Unfortunately, I have a bad feeling about NY-23...

Via RCP;

Nearly an hour after polls closed in NY, results for the 23rd are coming in at a snail's pace. The NYT page has 8% reporting, with Owens winning 53% to Hoffman's 42% and Scozzafava at 4%. But that's a total of less than 10,000 votes.
