| Democratic "Civil War:" Nutroots Threatens Democratic LawmakersRemember, though, the media is only interested in "concern-trolling," as Allah called it, the "civil war" in the Republican Party between the pragmatists and the maximalists. The Democrats are still as united as ever.MoveOn.org is sending out emails today seeking more contributions for its campaign to defeat any Democratic senator who does not fully support Obamacare. Yesterday the left-wing activist group asked members to contribute "to a primary challenge against any Democratic senator who helps Republicans block an up-or-down vote on health care reform." Today, MoveOn reports that it has received $2 million in pledges in less than 24 hours. "It's a clear sign of how angry progressives would be at any Democrat who helps filibuster reform," MoveOn executive director Justin Ruben writes in the new email. "The larger the war chest we can offer a potential challenger, the stronger the signal we'll send to conservative Democrats," Ruben continues. "So we're setting a huge new goal: $3 million in total pledges by the end of the week. That's plenty to launch a serious primary challenge."Byron York notes the media's "concern" of a "nightmare scenario" like this for Republicans, while failing to notice that this has been going on, and continues going on, in the Democratic Party, without any apparent "nightmarish" consequences. I don't think the Dems are ever united, but because they control the media and academia, there's more of them. And they're more able to hide how fractured the party is. It's interesting how disunited the Dems are because a lot of their special interest groups are at complete odds.
For example, the gays and the animal rights activists. The animal rights people don't want testing on animals, but the gays do for AIDS research. Or NOW standing behind OJ Simpson even though he was a wife beater because race triumphs over gender. So if anyone thinks the Dems are united is either not paying attention or trying to hide the non-unity. Another example? Nancy Pelosi and the CA Dems creating a dust bowl in Central California. The choice of new terms speaks volumes. Maximalists and Pragmatists?
So one wants everything but the other is just being pragmatic? BS.A Maxiimalist can be just as "pragmatic", IF it's required.. Maybe you and AP fit your definition but many of should be called Minimalists instead. It's really not a matter of position but philosophy. Maximalists would say you start with a conservative candidate and take away just enough to get across the finish line. Minimalists think if the candidate has 1 thing that can be called conservative then they are good to go. Maybe in a blue district, but the latter should never be the consideration in a Purple to Red one. The argument going on on the right always seems to revolve around where we end up rather than where we start as it should be. A Red district should be a Conservative district whether it's in Alabama or Upstate New York.. Just the same as Blue Districts are Liberal. The Dems ran Lamont against a sitting senator over one stinking issue for God's sake but yet we are supposed to balk at primaries when the hand picked candidate in a red district's only conservative cred is they will make the Dems spend 10% less than they would have otherwise? I wrote this before the Civil War thread disappeared, and darned if I'm not going to post it somewhere. For Those Who Were on the Civil War Thread: I would like to respond to Ace is a serious fashion. While I understand exactly what you're saying, Ace, and agree with you on all the issues, I think that where the problem comes in (for me) is anger management. I am surrounded on a regular basis by liberals, most of whom have only recently come to think of me as not Evil. Whenever they ask me a (smug) question about war, abortion, etc., I always respond with facts, presented in a reasonable, friendly and, if possible, friendly manner. What they have found is that we agree on many things when boiled down (both sides want less abortions, we disagree on how to accomplish it), and that I simply have a different outlook. (By the way, excellent response when the phrase "Religion of Peace" arises: "All I know whenever you hear about a terrorist attack, no one thinks, 'There go the Belgians again.'") That said, I know that for myself I look forward to your Comments section with a near unseemly glee. Because it's THERE that people let fly, whether it's because of Internet Anonymous Courage or something else, and I thrill (and frequently laugh) at the outrageous things said. It's in the Comments that I can let out the anger that I feel toward those in power who seem he**-bent on dragging this country into the Dark & Socialist Ages, where other people seem to "get" my despair at what's going on. Their impolite, profane and frequently physically impossible suggestions give me courage -- that I'm NOT the only one out here who's saying "What the f***?" Perhaps that's why we seem unreasonable -- because part of it is venting at what are, at root, real problems. Elected officials who are selling us collectively down the river. Corruption everywhere. The undermining of every single idea and value that this country was founded on and made so great. So maybe the puppet gallery is getting a little nuts. Is that so awful? Because under all the one-liners flying around, some real ideas are being bandied about. About what's important, who in power is abandoning core principles and how upsetting that is, about what we should do about it. The morons and moronettes have a lot of intellectual firepower (which is a bit scary) and it's on these pages that it gets to be expressed without being watered down (except for damping down the profanity for your advertisers, which has yielded some of the best euphemisms ever), knowing it will usually be taken in the spirit intended. You have to hope that this turns Democratic Primary voters into Republican general voters. It might. In Iowa in 2007-8 it turned Republican general voters into Democratic Primary voters. WTFCI - Moveone's track record of winning primaries is crap. The best hope would be that the moveon candidate savages the incumbent democratic sentator so much that they stumble out of a primary with incredibly high negatives and broke. Love to see someone like Lincoln or Bennett role into a general election cash strapped and with a significant chunk of their donor base so pissed at them that they won't give them any money. The upside to that is then the remaining third party outfits (like SEIU) and National Senate Campaign have to rush in to spend money to save an incumbent (which is always the priority) that they do not have the cash for open races like New Hampshire, Missouri, Ohio. The democrats have, the last few cycles, had money advantages. However, money is a finite resource (I know, you know that, I know that, but our President hasn't figured that one out yet). Every dollar spent to prop up a Lincoln is a dollar that can't be spent to take on Blunt, Portman, etc. Posted by: Mallamutt at November 03, 2009 03:27 PM (V9SYy) 106

how fractured the party is. It's interesting how disunited the Dems are
because a lot of their special interest groups are at complete odds.
I don't think there are more Democrats at all. However, there is the PERCEPTION that there are more Democrats because of the media etc. That demoralizes everyone else, who decides not to vote because there are so many Democrats out there frothing for obamacare/cap-n-tax/gun control/ fascism for all. It's all about perception baby. Not reality. What the public perceives as reality. That's why we got a crypto Muslim Commie in the White House. PPP On The Independent Surge For The GOP:
In NY-23 despite the presence more or less of two Republican candidates on the ballot, Doug Hoffman is winning 71% of the GOP vote to Bill Owens’ 67% of the Democratic vote. Hoffman leads Owens 52-30 with independents. In New Jersey Chris Christie is getting 82% of the Republican vote while Jon Corzine is at 72% of the Democratic vote. Christie leads 52-29 with independents. … From the high levels of party unity it’s clear that Republicans voters see the path back to power will require staying on the same page. And whether it’s because the Democrats have bad candidates or they’re unhappy with President Obama, independents are giving the GOP very high levels of support. It should be the best Republican election night since George W. Bush got reelected. Posted by: YRM at November 03, 2009 04:05 PM (xNw7B) 234

"The larger the war chest we can offer a potential challenger, the stronger the signal we'll send to conservative Democrats," Ruben continues. "So we're setting a huge new goal: $3 million in total pledges by the end of the week. That's plenty to launch a serious primary challenge." God, the irony of this whole situation is thicker than a bottle of Mrs. Butterworth's. It bears repeating that MoveOn raised nearly $100 million for political agit-prop between 2004 and 2008. They are trying to raise $3 million to fight Dems who don't support single-payer health care. It never occurred to these people that they could have donated every cent of that money to free clinics and other charities that help provide health care for the poor. Then again, let's face it--if the money was going for that purpose, there's no way in hell the dollar figures would have been that high. One of my Virginia guys who's plugged in says he's not surprised by Democratic reports of panic; the indicators and things he's seen make him think it's justified. Again, it's early; the after-work crowd could be much more Democratic and make the overall picture look different. The Democrats have a few more hours to try to make these delegate races look better for themselves. But from everything we're hearing and seeing, it seems safe to say the GOP had an excellent morning. From "Blue Virginia: (Fun Liberal Panic Reading): I'm a bit skeptical of this, so take it with as big a grain of salt as you'd like, but it's from an excellent source. They got exit poll results from a precinct in Arlington that went 60%+ for Kaine in '05. With around 250 voters sampled over a 5-hour period this morning, McDonnell is up 22 points on Creigh Deeds. WTF? I mean, if that's even CLOSE to being true, it's horrible. Also, even if it gets better through the day, we're talking about possible margins in Arlington of less than 60% possible for Deeds. For comparison purposes, Tim Kaine got 74% of the vote in Arlington in 2005. Posted by: YRM at November 03, 2009 04:24 PM (xNw7B) 272
