I remember in law school twenty years ago our professor was making a point about the process of an argument as opposed to the substance of an argument.  (I've long since forgotten what the point was.)   He chose to illustrate by using the abortion issue.  He began by explaining why abortion should be an option then he tried to turn it around with an anti-abortion argument.  He was dumbstruck.  Couldn't think of a single reason why anyone could oppose abortion.  Finally one of the students helped him out by stating (and I quote) "blah, blah, blah."  He jumped all over that using "blah, blah, blah" and off he went to continue making his point.

Honestly, we have a guy running for County Exec who's been on the Council for years.  The county is going broke.  There is a woman (former news anchor with no government experience, but fiscally conservative) running against him.  I would hope that voters would look at the bad economy and vote for someone who would change the direction of the county (putting aside their stance on abortion).  Unfortunately, as you point out, the abortion issue is like an Holy Grail to Pro-Choice zombies.  Therefore, there are idiots that would rather pay higher taxes and have worse transportation and a business unfriendly environment than vote for the "radical right winger."  The guy was talking about raising taxes until she won in the primary (we have a top two primary in our one party state, which really sucks, so the fact she emerged from that was amazing).  All of a sudden, he had to change his tune (but when he wins, he will raise taxes).
