Small Victories: Another Dem Deadline Come and Gone

In July the President said "the time for talk is through." In August, Harry Reid said their proposal would be ready immediately after the summer recess. And on September 22, Obama's OMB director, Pete Orszag, said that the goal was for Obamacare to be a law "over the next six weeks or so, maybe sooner." He bragged, "Prospects for broad-scale health-care reform have probably never been this good."

Today marks six weeks from his statement. At the time, he and the administration were still talking up the Baucus bill—you remember, the one that's been completely ignored after getting bottled up for two months with endless and ultimately fruitless negotiation. Harry Reid would have had his vote right after the summer recess, if it weren't for the Baucus bill. Those two months tore the Democrats to pieces and kept them from ramming through another anti-prosperity, anti-freedom piece of garbage like the spendulus. That was a small victory.

Orszag didn't just pick his six-week deadline out of the air. He knew—Obama knew—that if the healthcare bill passed in less than six weeks, Democrats as a party could go to the polls with something to show for the past eleven months. Lord knows, they haven't managed much else. Just Spendulus, Lily Ledbetter, and Sonia Sotomayor. Party disaffection—at the base—can be an insidious and dogged problem. It starts small.

Orszag also knew that if Obamacare hadn't passed in six weeks, Republican wins today would be nails in its coffin. Today, the Republican candidate for governor will win in Virginia, which voted for the President 52.62% to 46.33%. In today's election, a conservative candidate—a tea party candidate—manages to upset all of the planning and expectations of beltway Washington. These are small victories, but Democrats elected in swing districts are watching and they are doing the math.

So just missing another self-imposed Democratic deadline is a small victory. It starts with small victories in an off-off-election year. When you're out of power, small victories may be all you can manage. But they add up.

12 I just ask because the first two comments suggest 12:48-ish, but the end of the post says 02:13.  Which isn't DST weirdness.

And I like Beck as much as the next guy, but I think we can safely assume that the disintegration of the Democrats credibility in the process of failing to pass Obamacare was not part of The Plan.  Maybe parades celebrating its passage were meant to provide cover for some malfeasance.  But tomorrow's elections (appear to) put federal bureaucrats in much the same position as the Blue Dogs.  If there is some sinister master plan, each and every person involved has got to be wondering when they're going to be left out on a limb, since his power is not so absolute any more.

I think its alot simpler

They overestimated what they could do, and the opposition galvanized better than they had in 15 years. The Left thought they were still asleep, and so the mask slipped. They also thought they still controlled the information flow.

Now the homeowner is awake and the burglars are scrambling for cover.

The only way they will regain power is to shut off the flow of information, or in burglar-speak, turn off the lights. Then its back to a waiting game for the owners to get back to routine of sleep/eat/work, because the bulk of the US has a short term memory.

21 Beckoning Chasm,

I'll give it a go and try to answer your query:
Democrats must lie about their true goals because the American people disfavor elected Democrats' true goals by extraordinarily wide margins. However, average Americans are often too busy or lazy or what have you to investigate beyond the labels offered by those said same elected Democrats. Throw in a complicit MSM and the deceit can carry the day.

Or perhaps I'm mistaken...

Well, theu promise and they lie. But. who are we to say?

They don't always keep the promise.

But, they can continue to make the promises until they are called on it. Happens every ten years or so since we broke the dem hold on congress that went back forty years before Reagan.

25 Jersey don't need no stinkin' ACORN to steal an election.  They're already asking for extensions/exceptions for those absentee ballot requests whose signatures didn't match the voter records and haven't responded to inquiries.  Wonder what will come of that . . .

Meanwhile, they probably delayed sending the overseas absentee ballots long enough to make sure military stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan won't be able to get them in on time.  But, ya gotta have priorities . . .

NY-23 wasn't even set until 35 days ago, 10 days shorter than the federal recommendation.  No telling when their absentees went out.

From the above link:
Jobs have been a big issue in Upstate New York. It’s something Hillary Clinton campaigned on when she ran for Senate, and what every gubernatorial candidate promises to change when they campaign Upstate. New York State has been particularly hard hit by manufacturing jobs losses. In the past decade, since 1999, New York has lost more than 293,000 manufacturing jobs.

I left in 2000 and went to Alabama. You can't build or expand in NY. Only shrink. NY has major shrinkage. Ross Perot was right, but for the wrong reason. Too many fucking liberals at the helm.

Today is the day. The current predictions by the “experts” is a blowout for the Republicans in NY-23 and VA.  NJ is predicted to be a squeaker.  From what I have seen, that is probably accurate.

NY-23 should be a massive wakeup call for the national Republican Party. Even before Hoffman started blowing Dede out of the water, the Ras was on Fox saying that his latest poll should be a wakeup call for the Party. More than 50% of self-identified conservatives did not associate themselves with the Republican Party.  His words, and also that should scare the Republican Party.

NJ being a close race is another thing for the national Republican Party. The Dems are already putting their election fraud machine in high gear. If they do not win this election and the Rs win by less than 5 points trunk loads of votes will start turning up in urban districts.

The wakeup call there is that the national party must spend some money to fight this kind of corruption tooth and nail. If they continue to play “Mr. Niceguy” they will never win another close election.

32 From a piece at American Thinker

You and I are told increasingly we have to choose between a left or right. Well I'd like to suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There's only an up or down -- [up] man's old -- old-aged dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order, or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. And regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

33 Was that law passed in the late 1860s, per chance?

Actually that is section 5 of the Voting Rights Act which was supposed to be “temporary”. It was supposed to expire decades ago but each time it comes up congress renews it. They recently renewed it for another 25 years.

The law is blatantly unconstitutional on at least two fronts, the equal protection clause and the section dealing with States establish voting procedures. That being said, the liberal courts of the 60s upheld it based on it being “temporary” and needed to address past discrimination.  (Funny I have been unable to find either of those reasons in my copy of the Constitution).

It was recently upheld again in another one of those 5 – 4 splits with Kennedy getting up on the left side of the bed.  They did leave room in the ruling for another potentially successful challenge to the law though.

But what really torks me is the cowardice of the Republican Party in not challenging this in congress.  They are afraid someone will call them “racist”.

I'm endlessly held in awe of the process and machinery of government that the Founding Fathers (or "that cabal of old dead white male slave holders" if you are a modern liberal) put in place.  They knew the corrupting influence of power and they also knew that the only way to keep it from descending into outright tyranny was to divide it among many people.  Hence the subdivision of government into three branches, and the further subdivision of the legislature into two houses with all the associated speakers, presidents, leaders, whips, and straw-bosses of various kinds while it seems (and actually is) chaotic is very effective at preventing huge power grabs like ObamaCare even if a large number of the powerful want to do it.

Sometimes government gridlock is a Good Thing.

Oh, and Good Morning everybody!

RICHMOND, Virginia (CNN) - Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Virginia, acknowledged Monday a lack of enthusiasm among Virginia Democrats in this year's gubernatorial race, and predicted that turnout at the polls tomorrow will be low.

If that forecast holds true, Tuesday could be a difficult day for Creigh Deeds and his fellow Democrats, who have strung together a series a statewide victories in recent years by capitalizing on high voter turnout in Democratic-leaning regions of Virginia. Deeds is trailing Republican Bob McDonnell in the polls, due largely to an exodus of independent voters from the Democratic fold.

"It's going to be a low-turnout election," Scott told CNN after appearing at a rally with Deeds and the rest of the Democratic ticket in Richmond. "It's going to be tough. But Creigh Deeds knows how to come from behind."

By the way, let the spinning begin:

Actually the spinning has been going ever since the Dems realized they were going to get an old fashioned ass whuppin. The current talking point is that it doesn’t matter and has no implications for 2010.

The Fox Panel last night was funny with everyone except Juan Williams saying that tomorrow would show a massive Republican surge. Juan had to give the talking points and you could tell he didn’t really agree with them.  Just spinning to be the spin.

They are going to lose all three elections but go for the steal in NJ.

Let's hope today goes as well as predicted.  Any additional road block that can be thrown up in the path of the Leftist advance is a blessing.  Every gesture of defiance, however futile it may be, is deeply satisfying.  Given that today's elections are small potatos they might even be slightly more legitimate than usual - it's probably not worth it to the Left to crank up the voter fraud machine into full gear today.

Of course, next year "IT'S ON" and we'll see all their worst law breaking come into play...  No doubt there will be squads of black panther goons outside the polling places, my deceased great-grandparents will be voting "D," and someone will probably be kind enough to cast my vote for me while I'm at work.  Naturally the absentee ballots from overseas will have an even higher loss rate than usual, which will be ever increasing from this time forward.  ACORN will probably have their funding restored via an amendment to a "defense" bill, or the Lib-controlled courts will find some constitutional mandate that requires us to fund them.  Now that they have power they will stop at nothing to hold onto it permanently.

Should be real interesting next year.

45

On another note for a small victory on crap and tax. This in a story at Fox about Republicans threatening to boycott the Senate crap and tax committee hearings:

Democrats have a 12-7 majority in the committee and enough votes to advance the measure to the full Senate

The AP article neglects rule number 9 for committee hearings. In order to vote a bill out of committee to the floor a 10 vote majority must vote to do so AND at last one of those votes must be a minority party member.

Note that no mention is made of any Republican saying that the bill is flawed because the entire issue is nothing more than a scam. No mention is made of any Republican saying that even if the AGW scam were true, the bill does nothing to actually advance the problem of AGW. It is nothing more than a huge invasion of private property and increase in taxes.  In other words, like all the watermelon eco-legislation, it is noting more than a method to advance communism in the U.S.

Well, it is an AP article and Fox editors made no effort to clean it up. On that note, I see an article from Beitbart on Drudge that the Tribune Company will do a test next week in abandoning AP for economic reasons.

Wouldn’t it be a shame with BOTH the Tribune Company and AP were to go out of business.

This column over at NRO:

Can This State Be Saved?
Corrupt politicians took over my playground.

By Jim Geraghty

He discusses the possibility that a Republican gov will “save the State” from corruption and stop the continued bleeding of residents from the State. Excuse me Jim, but didn’t NJ have a Republican gov before?

I think we, as voters, put entirely too much credit in the election of the chief executive, whether it be the Governor or the President.

We had 8 years of the best President in the past 2 or 3 centuries in Ronald Reagan, but because he was hamstrung with Democrats and RINOs in Congress he really couldn’t get much of his agenda passed.   The same thing with GWB, except that he as a RINO and he did get a lot of his RINO stuff passed. Not so much for the conservative stuff.

So all you voters out there going to the polls today keep that in mind. It doesn’t do one bit of good to vote in a good conservative Governor or President is you send him to office to deal with a liberal legislative branch.

You must give them the tools to get the job done as well.

NY -23: It always was a Republican district, everyone knows it going to be drawn out of existence in 2012 and no respectable, mature, deep-thinking responsible person wanted it, so the voters had a temper tantrum and elected a firebrand just to vent their frustration out on a bad economic times, which, by the way, is the fault of George Bush.

Virginia: Craig Deeds ran a horrible campaign, he sank the whole ticket and he fumbled the tax issue by not being prepared for it and fumbling.

New Jersey: Corzine was battling a tough uphill fight with the economy, which, have we mentioned, is the fault of George Bush. So, Corzine is a victim of Bush's failed economic policies. As a governor, there was nothing he could do and he became a victim of George Bush's ineptitude.

There is no reason to be  SURPRISED...

The fact that Obama is utterly unqualified for his job is no surprise to me at all.  He's just a demagogue and people fell for it.  Yet every day he finds new ways to astound me with the degree of his incompetence.

Lying through his teeth, his famous "expiration date" on anything he says, his inability to speak without teleprompters, his intolerance and cowardice of hard questions, his unmasked devotion to Marxism, his ignorance of even basic economics, this was all expected.

Openly attacking Fox News?  Following Bush's war gameplan?  Not accomplishing anything even with a fillibuster-proof left wing congress for 9 months?  Bowing to the Saudi King/giving DVDs to Brown, iPod to the Queen/recoiling in terror when the French first lady tries to kiss his cheek?  Spending half his time going on dates or golfing or going on TV?  This was beyond what I expected.  It's like an I Own the World cartoon or an Iowahwak spoof, except it's really happening!!!

You want to see stupid to the 50th power go over and look at the comment section of the Politico.

78 I honestly think the MSM spin, as far as the national news is, will be to ignore it completely.  It's off-off year elections, so it's not important.  If pressed to talk about it, parties will not be mentioned.

The following headline and article over at Politico:

Uncivil War: Conservatives to challenge a dozen GOP candidates

Yes, they are quoting the MSM spin and meme on the GOP but as it turns out the article itself is quite balanced. Could that be because the editors who choose the Headlines at Politico are all liberal douches?

I recommend Morons go over and read the article.

But I gotta go folks. May be back later this evening.

Wolf Blitzer: Well, Roland, what do you make of tonight's election results?

Roland Martin: Clearly, Wolf, The President has failed to make us a post-racial nation because it is evident that a lot of white, angry, bigoted voters still exist. And its a shame. Because this President has extended the hand of friendship to these racists, and yet they cling to their bitter, angry ways.

Jack Cafferty: Word, Roland, Word.

84 Africans boycott meetings at UN climate talks Published: 11/3/09, 8:45 AM EDT
By ARTHUR MAXBARCELONA, Spain (AP) - African countries boycotted meetings at U.N. climate talks Tuesday, saying that industrial countries had set carbon-cutting targets too low for reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

The action forced several technical meetings to be canceled. Delegates to this week's U.N. climate talks in Barcelona warned that, unless the African protest was settled, it could set back the timetable for concluding a new climate change pact at a major U.N. conference next month in Copenhagen.

Chris Matthews: What do we take from these results tonight? Rachel

Rachel Madcow: Well, Chris, you have a bad economy that is clearly the result of 8 years of George Bush snorting cocaine, and the voters are punishing the wrong people. Clearly, the voters are stupid.

Keith Olbermann: If more people, before they voted, would simply listen to us, we would be able to enlighten them on what is truly going on in this country. How this historic President is trying, at times it seems almost single handly, to raise us above our base instincts. But, educating the masses is not easy. Thus, I think tonight, we here at that network my redouble our effort to educate America on what is truly wrong with the economy, that we are draining valuable resources by keeping GITMO open, how Death will win unless a strong robust public option in enacted and how there must be trials for the war crimes committed by George Bush, Dick Cheney and Sarah Pain. Until we as a country heal our wounds so insidiously inflicted by the last 8 year, can never move on.

Mika Brezhinski: Word, Keith, Word.

Could also be a tapeworm.   But he's a pathological narcissist; he can't handle losing a primary challenge or getting Bush-like approval ratings.  Best to quit while he can still blame Bush and Limbaugh for his failures.

89 "He never did release his health report. They're setting up narrative where he resigns (or declines to run for re-election) citing "health reasons" and gets to avoid taking responsibility for....something hitting the fan. What that something is, I don't know."

I don't know if I'd go that far, but I will say that I find it unlikely that he'll last another 7+ years at this rate. If for no other reason that he probably doesn't really like the job (or to really work for that matter). His policies won't work and he won't be able to stand chronic sub-50% approvals for long.

It's no secret that the man has had few, if any, "crucible" moments in his life when his gut was checked, he dug down deep and forged ahead like a real leader must when faced with adversity. He's a great campaigner and can win elections but in this job, unlike many of his others, results count. And his "results" won't be the kind that most voters had in mind when they pulled his lever in 2008.

I've heard Obama referred to as as the "accidental President" and even now I don't think that in Jan. 2007 he had any idea that he might win. Raise his political profile for a future run? Yes. But to wind up as POTUS, even his ego wouldn't have predicted that.

Whatever happened with the ACORN funding that was supposed to expire at the end of October?

Was it renewed?

The cut off was only for the rest of the fiscal year. As of November 1, 2009 the money taps were running wide open again. I believe the appropriate words describing the actions of last fiscal year were "Shuck" and "Jive". Stopping the Democrats funding criminal and unconstitutional activity is going to involve wooden stakes in the heart, and perhaps silver bullets.
