Afghanistan Calls Off Runoff Election, Declares Karzai Winner

Not much else to do once the other candidate drops out.

Election officials declared Afghan President Hamid Karzai the winner of a new five-year term Monday, canceling a runoff election scheduled for Saturday just one day after Karzai's sole challenger quit the race. The decision ended weeks of political drift since a first presidential poll in August was found invalid because of massive fraud.

In the capital, a sense of relief was instant and palpable. Kabul residents honked horns and exchanged celebratory text messages as the news spread. American, European and U.N. officials rushed to congratulate Karzai and pledged to work closely with his new administration.

...Within two hours of the announcement, the U.S. Embassy issued a statement saying, "We congratulate President Karzai on his victory in this historic election and look forward to working with him, his new administration, the Afghan people and our partners in the international community to support Afghanistan's progress toward institution reforms, security and prosperity."

U.S. officials said privately that Karzai would clearly have won the runoff, and they maintained that Abdullah's voluntary withdrawal made it unnecessary to hold a new poll that would have exposed voters to the risk of attack by Taliban insurgents. Even after hundreds of thousands of votes were discarded as fraudulent in the August poll, Karzai won more than 49 percent to Abdullah's 30 percent.

That's got to be an Obama record for throwing someone or something under the bus. It wasn't all that long ago the Sen. John Kerry was hailed as a hero for getting Karzai to agree to the runoff. The second round of voting was deemed important to the legitimacy of the Karzai government and any effort to support it.

Now? Not so much.

It's almost as if this was just another stalling tactic by Obama to avoid dealing with Gen. McChrystal's troop request.

Drew, let me be very clear on this!

The only thing that Opie Dopie Hopie Changie is stalling for, is the MARXIST HEALTH TAKE OVER.

Until Opie gets his "Victory" in the insane power grab, there will be no decision on how to lose the war in Afghanistan.

This is a no-brainer.  Opie is sacrificing American Military lives and our National Security for Marxism.

4 My hunch is that they (Obama/State Department) paid Abdullah off for two reasons.  1. They wanted to avoid the safety risk of another election and 2. Abdullah was in support of more troops now and more than Obama had indicated he would send.

5 The administration is waiting to decide the troop request until after the Healthcare debacle is resolved.

6 I wonder if Abdullah Abdullah was thinking what most of us were thinking: hey TOTUS is not sending anyone in to monitor or safeguard the elections so all his legitimate partner to work with is BS, TOTUS is therefore using me and my candidacy to hurt my country by delaying the troop buildup, I should step down for the good of my country.

Wouldn't that be nice, someone thinking about their people ahead of themselves?

I know a lot of GOPers dont like Hillary, but John Kerry would be SO MUCH worse as SoS we cannot even imagine. Unless we look at his speech when he threw AfPak under da bus the other day and comapre it to HRC interview on Lehrer where she made it clear we MUST WIN in Afghanistan and we MUST defeat the Taliban.I LIKE that Hillary pixxed off the Palestinians, I HATE that TOTUS made her walk back her stmt praising Israel after the Palestinians whined to him

I LIKE that Hillary told the Packistan media, I find it hard to believe no one in your govt knows where they are hiding or couldnt get them if they really waned to, when we are giving them BILLIONS of dollars. I like the tougher talk.

Time's up TOTUS, you wanted the big chair now man up and borrow some cojones from Hillary or Michelle if you need to and send in the troop buildup

51 Look out Joe:

Response to Vice President Biden's Comments Today About My Position On Energy Independence

As the vice president knows, I have always advocated an all-of-the-above approach to American energy independence. Among other things, my alternative energy goal for Alaska sits at 50 percent because Alaska reached more than 20 percent during my term in office. The Obama-Biden administration, on the other hand, recently announced a renewable goal of only 25 percent. However, domestic drilling should remain a top priority in order to meet America’s consumption and security needs.

The vice president’s extreme opposition to domestic energy development goes all the way back to 1973 when he opposed the Alaska pipeline bill. As Ann Coulter pointed out, “Biden cast one of only five votes against the pipeline that has produced more than 15 billion barrels of oil, supplied nearly 20 percent of this nation’s oil, created tens of thousands of jobs, added hundreds of billions of dollars to the U.S. economy and reduced money transfers to the nation’s enemies by about the same amount.”

This nonsensical opposition to American domestic energy development continues to this day. Apparently the Obama-Biden administration only approves of offshore drilling in Brazil, where it will provide security and jobs for Brazilians. This election is about American security and American jobs.

There’s one way to tell Vice President Biden that we’re tired of folks in Washington distorting our message and hampering our nation’s progress: Hoffman, Baby, Hoffman!

OT, but fun for those who enjoy schadenfreude:

http://snipurl.com/t0r1m

"One year on, Obamamania cools to luke warm support"

A year on from a historic election, the spirit of popular goodwill that yielded America's first black president has retreated to tepid support for Barack Obama as he presses his change agenda.

Since the November 4 poll, Obama's visage has been everywhere, conspicuously on the streets of the nation's capital where millions of foreign and domestic tourists have visited over the past year, many of them snatching up poignant souvenirs.

A quick look around downtown Washington confirms that Obama trinkets are still on sale, but several street hawkers have found little point in displaying the t-shirts, posters, and "Yes We Can" buttons bearing the new president's image.

"They stay in the truck," grumbled a vendor who identified himself as Dick, as he pointed to a rusty vehicle behind him. "They don't sell any more."

Willow it is pretty easy to do. Take this sentence

"Well you have got what you want, Arlen Specter and Dedes out of your party. Now they reliably vote Democrat. "

See everyone knows the reason they "left" or got kicked out, either or you choose, is because they were already reliable Dem votes. That statement at face value is so ridiculous and devoid of reality that it is absurd. The trolls post shit like this because they are either stupid, mentally retarded, or lieing thru their teeth. You just leave little nuggetts like this in your sockpuppet comments, like a logic puzzle with a piece missing, and it usually fools everyone unless they can see your hash marks. Further example would be: "You pathetic wingnuts need to come to grips with your parties irrelevancy and embrace the moderates in your party or face extinction." The logic pieces missing there are

1. Usage of "pathetic wingnuts" when in the very next 10 words appeals for you to embrace moderates.

2. Obviously Democrats are in the process of chasing out their "moderates", Liebermann most notably and the Blue Dogs have been gettin ads run against them in their own districts. So appeals for you to embrace moderates while the Democrats sprint to the left are laughable.

If the cro-moderates don't like the platfor, they can "down principle*" themselves and go Donk.

Personally most of the few Mods I know, if they had a gun to their head, say they would rather go donk than be a conservative. If they shift values, left is it for them.

*"down principle" is a (tm)  I created for use by morons only. Your mileage may vary. Batteries not included. I won't come in your mouth.

137 Obama and the Democrats will find a way to turn Afghanistan into a humiliating defeat. It is in their DNA. Inside every liberal is a mewling sissy waiting to spit on a vet.

The type of bastards that spit on the Vietnam vets are now running the country.

They figure that if America is defeated badly enough, it will discourage any future military operations and let them take away the defense budget to support free heroin needles and ACORN voter drives.

Forrest Biden is still pissed he couldn't lose us the Cold War with all his votes against modernizing our weapons.

Commies and liberals have a love affair with cowardice in general and defeat for America specifically. And Obama is worse than most.

But I'm simple. There may be nuance that I can't grasp.

Because it's only FAIR after all the evil we do.

Just anecdotal, but I've heard it from unsuspecting moonbats on multiple occasions.

Obama will surrender, bribe, retreat, and kiss-ass his way out of Iraq and Afghanistan in any it takes so he can focus on his list of chores Soros gave him.

142 Hmm, not much surprise here. Looks like Afghani opposition candidate decided that he didn't have much chance in a runoff, or that Teh Obamessiah was going to use him as a political tool to avoid more commitment for the country. Either way, waiting for another chance, with possibly a more stable nation, might be a good thing. Or waiting for the next election after Karzai drops the ball (or incase of the present US President, the soap) and then his failures won't be able to be covered by Chicago style politicking. So, no runoff for now. Whether or not that is good for Afghanistan remains to be seen.

I bet those vendors could make a lot of money selling old Bush merchandise.

My husband and I were in DC in the spring of 2008.   I looked everywhere for Bush merchandise,  and didn't find any except a framed White House stamp with an ink portait of President Bush (which is hanging in my study right now).  Everything was McCain and Obama, with a little bit of Hillary.

150 Concerned Moderate Voter:

Dede and Spector were not moderates.  They were democrats who assumed Republican labels in order to get elected.  Spector was a democrat before he changed parties in order to win in Pennsylvania, back when Republicans were in the ascendancy.  His vote was more reliable for the democrats than for the Republicans on any important issues.  (He would happily vote GOP when it was inconsequential, or when the democrats already had enough votes.)

Likewise,  Dede probably ran as a Republican in her heavily Republican upstate assembly district. It didn't really matter,  since the democrats have a huge margin in the New York Assembly.  She could vote with the GOP knowing full well it didn't matter. And her holding that position kept someone else from getting it and moving up the ladder in GOP politics.

It all fell apart when she decided to run for the congressional seat.  Suddenly,  her positions were scrutinized and found to be unacceptable.  With her husband being an official in the SEIU,  it is now obvious that she was a mole.

No one is trying to keep moderates out.   But we can't allow the moderates,  who are a MINORITY, to run the show.  And before you label someone a moderate,  you should look and see whether they are really democrats who have infiltrated our party.  And my charge of infiltration isn't a paranoid muttering;  it is obvious we have a group of people who have done just that.  I wonder how many have weaseled their way into the party structure.
