Ford, The Private Option Of The Auto Industry, Posts Quarterly Profit

Wait, free enterprise works?

Ford, the only Detroit automaker to dodge direct government aid and bankruptcy court, surprised investors with net income of nearly $1 billion in the third quarter and forecast a "solidly profitable" 2011.

The automaker said Monday earnings were fueled by U.S. market share gains, cost cuts and the Cash for Clunkers program, which drew flocks of buyers to showrooms this summer. Ford's shares rose 68 cents, or 9.8 percent, to $7.68 in morning trading.

...The earnings came despite an $800 million revenue drop. But Ford said it cut costs by $1 billion during the quarter, accomplished through layoffs in North America and Europe, reduced pension and retiree health care costs and improvements in productivity and product development.

Chief financial officer Lewis Booth said the company took in $1.3 billion more than it spent in the quarter, an improvement over its $1 billion cash burn in the second quarter.

"That's a huge deal," Booth said.

Meanwhile, their government funded competitors are looking for a 3rd bailout of their credit arm.

Yes, Ford was helped by 'Cash for Clunkers' but that was open to everyone and it will be interesting to see how they fare when that artificial demand disappears.

One can only wonder how much better Ford would be doing it its competitors were forced to live with the consequences of their poor business choices.

Its something that should happen, I don't know if Ford could make it happen before going bankrupt.

More industrial strength irony from “The Won”.

We have saved untold billions of jobs but unemployment still high!

We need more infrastructure building programs!

In the face of our current economic mess (which I inherited BTW) we need new innovative ways of raising money for this infrastructure.

That is why less than 1% if the porkulous program bill was for actual infrastructure.  That is why we Lame-O-Crats passed the bill that requires 20% of the gasoline tax which was originally iuntended to maintain the infrastructure be diverted to the corrupt inner city Lame-O-Crat government in the name of “rapid transit”.

Read “inovative” to mean raise taxes in a dramatic fashion.

I live in a former GM town and I've served Union workers for decades. And I want to speak up for them. It was NOT the UAW which caused GM's problems. Note that Ford and Chrysler use the same Union workers.

Starting over 25 years ago, GM executives had "performance options" written into their individual contracts. In order to trigger these options the executives would post a profit even if it meant failing to fund the workers' pension and benefit plans. In many cases the board members would cash out 7or 8 figure bonuses year after year while rolling forward the pension "debt", then retire before the house of cards collapsed. That could only go on so long before it was a problem. Ross Perot screamed the first time he saw this practice....so the GM execs bought him and his silence out. The big price tag came WITH a gag order for Ross.

Ad to that the situation brought by the Southern States that wanted manufacturing in their area. In several instances they would BUILD the plant for a foreign car company, give the company total tax abatement AND guarantee the purchase of X number of cars built there for State Employee use, in return for 300 or so NON-Union (IE: low paying) jobs. ($15/hour anyone?) BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Issuzu, ALL had plants built for them and they basically guaranteed the big three couldn't compete against this State underwritten manufacturing base. At the same time, there was frequently Federal aid brought to the equation which means NORTHER STATES were being forced to help underwrite their own competition in these Southern plants.

Now, that wouldn't have existed *IF* the Southern States had actually held out for Union Wages as part of the negotiations for these new plants. Or taxed the businesses normally. And frankly many of GM's former executives should be held responsible for criminal neglegence, nepotism and corporate piracy. But to point to the Union Labor as the problem is basically to be naive about how this all happened.

Meanwhile, the retirees who served GM for decades and now find their pensions and benefit plans to be non existant......they should be paid by those Southern States for their part in demolishing the American Auto Industry.

56 I still contend that if the feds hadn't intervened only one of the big three would have truly gone under/away. An actual non-broken bankruptcy in which the rule of law was followed and the primary creditors didn't get shuffled to the back would have scared the bejeezus out of the UAW, making them much more amenable to a real deal with Ford and the other remain manufacturer. Not to mention the sales that would have shifted.

It probably would have been enough, and everyone would have been in a stronger position. As it sits now, every sale of a GM or Chrysler vehicle is like a zombie nibbling on the toe of the rest of the viable auto makers.

But only for the that period.  As of right now, the UAW members are poised to beat Ford into the arms of GM/UAW ownership:

On Friday, two of the UAW’s largest units, which represent an assembly plant in Dearborn and two in Louisville, Ky., followed the lead set by other locals by soundly defeating the proposal that Ford said it needed to be competitive long term with its domestic rivals, General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC.
“It looks like the numbers are heavily against” the deal, said Rocky Comito, president of UAW Local 862 in Louisville. “I see no way of overcoming it.”

Yes, Ford was helped by 'Cash for Clunkers' but that was open to everyone and it will be interesting to see how they fare when that artificial demand disappears.

That's really going to be the key, and I have a feeling their drop is going to be just as bad as the foreign companies that saw their sales spike during C4C during the 4th Quarter.  Absent some sort of miracle, low shipping numbers, retial inventory, and unemployment indicate this Christmas season is going to be really bad.  So while I have no problem patting Ford on the back for

Some of the C4C supporters have crowed about how the program cleared old lot inventory so factories could produce new inventory.  They never seemed to make the connection that absent some sort of "free gubmint money" program, that inventory never would have been moved, and now dealers are going to have a bunch of cars just sitting on their lots again, with no new orders coming in unless that inventory is moved.  The program is pointless unless it stimulated long-term sales growth, not just a one-month spike that cleared out last year's lot detrius.  Not to mention that people who owned their cars free and clear are now 15K-20K or more in debt, when this whole recession was caused by a massive debt crunch across the board.

A friend is choosing between Honda and Ford for their new car which they desperately need as their old car has over 150,000 miles on it and counting.  someone in the group asked why the guy hadn't look at some of the amazing new GM trucks.  His answer was "I know they are amazing but at least with Ford I know my warranty will be worth something"  Then someone else said "don't worry about GM, the government will back up the warranty" and someone esle said "that is precisely what worries me".

I saw the commercials for GMC's new station wagon, and I admit I was pretty impressed by the slick marketing.  It seems to have everything I'd want in a vehicle of that type.  The problem?  It costs over $24K base, and would probably run up to $28K on most models.  I might as well buy a Rav4, and get the same features, for roughly around the same price; or a Kia Rondo, Honda Accord, or Honda CR-V and spend about $5-10K less.

I won't be buying or even renting a GM, ever.

Oh, I always ask for a GM when I'm renting.  I drive off the lot with that POS floored, at every stop light I use the emergency brake from 40 mph to 0, I make tuna sandwiches on the hood, throw cigar butts on the back seat, and set the radio to mariachi music.  When I return it I usually fill 'er up with diesel.

Yeah.  Ford only makes a profit until the next labor renegotiation.  They're going to dick over Ford, since Ford competes with the companies they own.

Well, at the companies the union now owns, the rank and file get paid less.  That's the whole problem with the Ford proposal: they've asked their UAW workers to take the same deal that the workers at Government Motors have had to accept.

What would be swell is if the UAW members at Ford came to realize that forcing the company into the embrace of the Obama Administration is a recipe for lower wages and bigger layoffs... and then the UAW members at GM and Chrysler might come to the same realization.

To be ford is good today.  Do you think that Ford should be the new corporate sponsor of the Rebulican Party?

they could put it on the advertising , and make a Republican specialty car...

it would have no air bags( let's face it being Republicanss can be a real head banger),

a radio that only has talk stations,

roof rack for the toys, 3 children seats in the back, a map the the USA

and directions to the small towns in America.  There would be a small flag on the windshield, and  some jumper cables in the trunk.

96 ($15/hour anyone?) BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Issuzu, ALL had plants built for them and they basically guaranteed the big three couldn't compete against this State underwritten manufacturing base.

Yeah. I can say $15 an hour. Especially for unskilled factory workers. As far as I am concerned, the southern states did a good thing. While your argument regarding rolling the debt may hold water, I have not fact checked it, your argument that the union worker is not the problem is patently wrong. Greed can exist at the worker level too. These workers bled the system for every penny, being way over paid for what they do. I know many professionals with debt accured to get an advanced education that do not get what these folks get....many of whom never finished grammer school. So cry me a river and bye bye to the union.

Proud owner of 3 Fords:

2005 Ford 500 (Yes, somebody did buy one)

1996 Ford Crown Victoria

1977 Ford F-150 Custom

They are all outstanding, and none of them have ever required more than routine maintence (note: I follow the servicing schedule printed in the manual - what the machines are designed to need, this may explain it). I can't say the same for my wife's string of Toyotas and Hondas. They've been okay, but somehow all of our most expensive repairs have managed to fall on them and not the Fords. The 2005, the "young 'un", is now approaching the 100K mile mark. These are fine machines, and each of them nicely priced when I bought them. All of them were built in the United States, by fellow Americans, who did a great job.

The weasels running the unions better back off Ford and not screw up the last great American automotive success story during the current round of negotiations. These negotiations, by the way, ought to be illegal because of conflicts of interest. The unions are major owners of GM and Chrysler now, and they should be compelled to give Ford the same terms they have in effect given themselves. Ford is essentially bargaining with GM for its labor costs, which is ridiculous.

Industrial business must be allowed to thrive in America again, of its own free reign. Time has long passed for us be messing around throwing obstacles in its way and layering with non-competitive costs. To hell with that. Let industrial muscles flex.

Ford should use its head, tell the union thugs this is what you get period, and if they refuse move your assembly plants to non-union owned states.  Get out of Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana and move to Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma or Texas and tell the UAW thugs to Kiss your Grits.

The UAW already owns GM (Government Motors) and Chrysler and are ensuring there failure.  Ford was smart enough not to fall for the “Obama scam” and that just pissed the UAW off that they don’t have a monopoly on the US auto market (you know Team Obama (Obama/Holder/DNC) would never take any action to stop their theft.

I will never buy a GM or Chrysler product again; they couldn’t even give me one on a game show.

101 I think that the STARTING wage is $18 to $19 per hour (depending on location) at the Toyota plants with most workers making closer to $25, not including benefits.  Comparing apples to apples is kinda hard.  Tennessee has a much lower cost of living than Michigan, much warmer winters, but much hotter summers.

I'm not fond of the burnt orange and coon dogs, but if you have the cash I suppose you could send your kids to Vanderbilt instead.

Posted by: RicardoVerde at November 02, 2009 06:42 PM (PBTsv)

102 I have experience through myself and my family of GM, Chrysler, Ford, AMC, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, BMW, Renault, Jaguar, and Mazda.

And I regualrly work on Toyotas, Mazdas, Nissans, and the above cars.  GM stuff now is actually pretty damn good.  But Ford is better.  Ford, Toyota, and Buick all occupy top spots in quality surveys in this country.

You can't go wrong with Ford is all I'm saying.
