| It's Official: Scozzafava Endorses The Democrat Against HoffmanYou know me, and throughout my career, I have been always been an independent voice for the people I represent. I have stood for our honest principles, and a truthful discussion of the issues, even when it cost me personally and politically. Since beginning my campaign, I have told you that this election is not about me; it’s about the people of this District. It is in this spirit that I am writing to let you know I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same. It’s not in the cards for me to be your representative, but I strongly believe Bill is the only candidate who can build upon John McHugh's lasting legacy in the U.S. Congress. John and I worked together on the expansion of Fort Drum and I know how important that base is to the economy of this region. I am confident that Bill will be able to provide the leadership and continuity of support to Drum Country just as John did during his tenure in Congress. In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. He will be an independent voice devoted to doing what is right for New York. Bill understands this district and its people, and when he represents us in Congress he will put our interests first. Please join me in voting for Bill Owens on Tuesday. To address the tough challenges ahead, we must rise above partisanship and politics and work together. There's too much at stake in this election to do otherwise.I really hope someone is going to primary her next year for her Assembly seat. Added: Scozzafava's hissy fit is understandable on two levels, she's pissed at Hoffman and she does agree with Owens more. So on a human level I get it. What it is not is forgivable. Someone needs to run against her for her Assembly seat and failing that, support should be given to her Democratic challenger. Trust me on this, one more or less Republican of any stripe is of no consequence there. Right now it's 110 Democrats and 40 Republicans. As long as NYC remains part of NY State, that's not changing. Thanks to @jaketapper for the heads up, even if he is a Phillies fan. Comments1

The notion that you'd better vote for the Democrat because the Republican will gut the military base in town is too hilarious for words. Who the hell are they trying to kid?

And incidentally, I -really- hope this is the last we'll ever hear of Newt Gingrich as some supposed conservative leader. I've -never- liked him, not even back in his best days, and he's pretty much a full fledged RINO now.
Wait. I take that back. Newt is a -consummate- Republican. But he's barely a conservative, and hasn't been for some time. Never really understood all the affection some have for him anyway, but I sure hope that's over now. Qwinn Posted by: Qwinn at November 01, 2009 03:43 PM (SxA2Q) 7

"Moderates" are like an insecure, needy girlfriend. They whine and threaten to leave if you don't call them every hour and live your life for their every whim, pretty sick of 'em. honestly who cares about David Frum. This is the same guy who wrote an article 10 days ago mocking the right for saying Hoffman "had a chance to win". Now here we are, the republican dropped out and endorsed the Dem, and Hoffman with a chance to win the election. He is a joke. I have no problem with moderates in the Republican party, but they need to recognize they are the minority in the party and therefore do not get to decide its direction. If he wanted to really help the party, which i do not think he does. He would use his influence of moderates(which i doubt exists) to push for republicans in the northeast where you have to be moderate to win. And he should then let the conservatives try to win in areas where conservatives win. He will sit there and tell us that we can't run conservatives in conservative districts, but when we tell him that he can't run moderates in conservative districts, we are called crazy and fringe. He doesn't want to help the party, he wants to ingratiate himself to the cocktail party crowd and keep his job as a "house republican" on the NYT Posted by: Ben at November 01, 2009 03:54 PM (bftbi) 43

You fucking assholes like toeing the line, giggling with the democrats just to keep Republicans nervous and be little darlings of the press. There is only one type of moderate Republican that I will ever give the time of day to. "Folks, I am a Republican. I do not believe that opposing gay marriage and abortion rights is productive to the political atmosphere in this country. These issues are just too divisive to be a litmus test of the Republican party. But, make no mistake about it, while I do not agree that these positions should define the Republican party, I absolutely believe that the tax and spend policies of the Democratic party will lead to the destruction of the economy of the United States as we now know it. While there are issues that may differ in importance based on regional and local politics, there is no member of the Republican party who can expect the support of the party faithful while abandoning the core fiscal principals that have made this Nation great. It is time to set aside our smaller differences, and unite behind the things that we absolutely cannot retreat on, ever. If we do, we have failed our supporters, and ultimately failed those who came before us and made the United States what it was prior to the abandonment of sound fiscal policy to tax and spend economic suicide." LOL. I just KNEW this would happen.
I read Ace's post last night about how be "feels bad" for Scuzzlebutt and how she's a "good person," and I immediately thought to myself: "This &%$#* is going to endorse Owens. Just wait." Looks like I was right. Good person? Yeah, right. She's a RINO leftist scumbag. She's so angry that the Republican grassroots wanted an actual conservative to win the district that she's now betraying her own party. Let's all donate to her primary opponent next election. Hate to say this but I think the republicans and the conservatives got played beautifully by the dems. they want to be able to humiliate Sarah Palin on Tuesday and since NY 23 is the kind of district where everyone knows everyone, personally and since dede and hubby are big onion people and she is a "name brand" up there, when she says "vote for Owens", they are going to vote for owens. But the district shows there really is no difference between the dems and the republicans. So that means that regular folks who may think they are being represented, aren't.
Someone upthread said Beck's rating were up last week. Well he had pretty good shows but the one on friday with bolton and the british lord fell flat. they never really said anything of import. The "lord" seemed more worried about America than Bolton. Bolton seemed afraid to say anything controversial and "the lord" said a lot of controversial stuff which fell flat when Bolton said it wasn't so. Not so sure I'm going to keep watching Beck. somehow feel he is part of the administration, not against it. they are such a slick administration, they make it so you don't know who you can trust. If what Beck is saying is true, people should be angry. Instead he is making them accept all of this, like training them to just be complacent. It's a little frightening to watch no one care to stand up for the country. Posted by: curious at November 01, 2009 04:17 PM (p302b) 86

The endorsement won't help Owens. Her best pro-Owens move would have been to play the victim card, but remain "Republican". Lots of whining and moaning about how the GOP good ol' boys shivved the loyal Republican girl. Why?
Because the crosstabs in last week's polls showed that her greatest support was among Republican women. Voting for Dede as a intra-party protest vote is one thing - voting for a self-avowed liberal turncoat is something else. Posted by: mrp at November 01, 2009 04:18 PM (HjPtV) 90

If you morons take a moment and think about who would've pulled the lever for Scooz, you'll realize her endorsement is insignificant. Scooz was gonna the Anybody But The Democrat Vote. That's it. Scooz was not going to get any 'progressive' votes, those are all going to Owens. Scooz's moderate support will be split 60/40 to Owens and Hoffman, respectively. But the loyal (R) voters, by a margin of 3-1, will go to Hoffman. The rest will go to Scooz because they're too stupid or ignorant to realize she dropped out of the race and will still pull the lever for the (R). This is still Hoffman's election to lose. After giving him some conditional praise yesterday I have to wonder WTF is going on with the Repub party under Michael Steele. That a cabal of squishes and Rinos could've nominated a backstabbing scrunt like Skeezerfava in a procedure which is the antithesis of openness and accountability is bad enough. But then to compound the complicity to have an increasingly worthless gasbag like Neut shill for her in what seems to be a shameless desire to keep his mug in the limelight is just too fucking much. If nothing else, this points out the complete lack of leadership at the top of the Repuke party and why Steele has been a disaster of a choice.

This is O/T but Ally on the CNN money show said he is going to buy a house as they are at their lowest prices and he can get a good mortgage. What is aggravating is that some people sold their homes somehow predicting this crash coming and now they will jump back in to a very down market. the interesting thing was he said he has save twenty to thirty percent down and he had six to eight months of mortgage payments saved and he has a great credit score. The host said "well this is what banks are requiring now" and he said "yes, i've always done this but they considered it nerdy" and she said "well it's not, this is how it is and Ally, "nerdy is the new black." They also noted "no more living paycheck to paycheck" and made it seem that those people were somehow bad people. Then they had a lovely woman on who predicted loss of white colar jobs and a second wave of foreclosures. So some people will make out literally "like bandits" and others are screwed and will continue to be screwed until they may lose it all. Honestly know people trying to seel their houses. Can't do it. Either people won't pay them enough to cover their existing mortgage and even then most will lose the money from previous houses that they put into this house or is they do get the "right buyer" that buyer ends up not getting the mortgage. Seems the non home owners who got out at the top and seemed to see something the rest of us didn't see are going to be the winners.

I just tried to contact our former Speaker, but only got this message: Newtered Gangreneich won't be available to help the Republican cause in New York for the foreseeable future. He has lost interest in NY-23 and has thrown his full support behind Manuel Zelaya, the great moderate Republican running for the Presidency of Honduras, and will be out of the country for a while. Any tin foil you could send would help, as the great Republican Zelaya has a need for more tin foil than is currently available in Honduras (due to those dastardly Israelis and their mind rays). Send your tin foil to: Great Republican Manuel Zelaya Tin Foil Alley, Brazilian Embassy Basement, Honduras
And remember, just because you don't agree with Zelaya on 99% of the issues doesn't mean that he isn't a great Republican, dedicated to conservative values. He signed a pledge (on tin foil, if you can believe that). Posted by: progressoverpeace at November 01, 2009 04:30 PM (A46hP) 108

As with Colin Powell, I argued that we could have a reasonably large tent, but that we had to have one rule. If you want to be a Republican, then you can't go around endorsing Democrats.
I think that's a low bar, but pretty much essential. It's amazing how tone-deaf the so-called conservative intellectuals are. People like Brooks and Noonan and Parker and to some extent Newt were shocked, shocked!, that Obama turned out to be what we all knew he was. But another friend one of the "ladies who lunch" who lives in Bill O's renighborhood when asked how she likes her twnety plus percent decrease in value said "well, let's fact it, all this real estate was way over priced, I would like to see it come down much more to tell you the truth so it would be affordable". I think we keep supporting the good conservative candidates. Like Marco Rubio. I've been out of work for way too long, but if enough of us kick people like him $25 (or even less), it will make a huge difference. Like it has for Doug Hoffman. Lacey,
I think it's pretty simple. Set up a conservative PAC, although there could be quite a battle there on what core beliefs are. But assuming that can be done with a sole focus on limited government and fiscal responsibility. Candidates that toe that line get the money, those that don't, don't. Make sure that everyone is aware of it and instead of donating to the RNC, people send their money to the conservative PAC. The RNC is full of RINO dipshits anyway, so it's not like I will ever give them another dime to begin with. As a matter of fact, let's just get out ahead of the discussion and call the PAC Americans for Conservative Fiscal Policy. No social issues, just conservative economics. Tell the Republican establishment to fuck off, if we feel a Republican candidate shares our beliefs, we'll contribute. If not, go pound salt assholes. I understand that you don't feel sound fiscal policy is a Republican core belief, so I don't picture you getting on board with the idea. Peaches, just sending money to the individual candidate does help the candidate, but that's not enough anymore. A statement has to be made and only a national PAC will be able to accomplish that. It's got to be a fuck you Newt and Steele PAC that says until you start sending us candidates with sound economic beliefs, you can piss off. They have to know where there money has dried up and gone to.
There is another war to be fought, and that's the war to rid the conservative movement of the social issues. It's a loser, plain and simple. If gay people want to get married, let them. Thus, someone who is a conservative, who is principled and who stands

"the party faithful while abandoning the core fiscal principals that have made this Nation great" bingo! that's main very main concern of mine... leave all the social disagreements out ... fiscal principles, indiv. rights principles are most important to independents. Posted by: johnc_recent_EX-democrat at November 01, 2009 That's easy to say in theory. What happens when the so-called social liberals/fiscal conservatives say that global warming is a social issue and healthcare for all is a social issue. People seem to think that it's quite alright to put people into power with the mentality that sacrificing the lives of millions of people is quite alright. That's what supporting abortion is. You have the mentality that it is quite alright to kill millions of babies out of "convenience". And you don't think this same mentality won't affect healthcare and being okay with "death panels" and rationing? Or won't affect Cap and Trade and 'saving the world from global warming' at the expense of destroying people's lives through economics (high taxes, high energy rates, totalitarian control of life, etc)? People seem to think so cavalierly about fostering a society with the lack of respect for the sanctity of human life, thinking that it is just some opinion people can have without it having a horrible consequence on society. If all life is not sacred, then no life is sacred. As someone mentioned yesterday... "It's a fascinating anomaly of modern America that it's un-Constitutional to execute a rapist for the crime of rape, but perfectly Constitutional to execute the rapist's unborn child, who's committed no crime at all." If you think that mentality does not have a detrimental effect on culture and society, and can just be ignored as irrelevant, I just don't know what to say. You are right about that. Here's my issue, this Dede thing just basically pushed me over the edge. I've always followed politics, but never been terribly politically active. But this NY race and how much of an idiot Newt is has absolutely caused me to blow my stack.
My job also somewhat thwarts that as I cannot really be a active partisan when the wrong side is in power in my state. Which they are, for the next year only hopefully. Not that I'm a big deal, but big enough in my industry that I cannot risk hurting my co-workers. Which is why I like the PAC idea, financially support candidates who stop the fiscal insanity. With a clear message about what the intent is, what the beliefs are, and see if folks will donate. And yes, part of the message is that the RNC is a bunch of dipshits who can no longer be trusted with money, and even more so, decision making. People need to know that the game has changed, perhaps forever. If the social conservatives don't want to have anything to do with it, that's their choice. denial of the obvious is a warning sign of metal illness No, I assure you I am really mentally fine. But what you had in New York was a complete cluster you know what. A local Republican establishment with a country club type attitude. A candidate (Scozzafava) with a complete inability to understand the tides of the race. And Hoffman hit lightning in the bottle. Now, there are lessons to be learned here. You can't be a Republican in the modern era that is more left than the democrat. You can not be an organization that is tone deaf to the impact blogs, the internet, talk radio and the like have on movement conservatives. You can't, as a Republican, go against every core principal of the conservative legs that support the party. But, you also can't read into one isolated incident more than its an isolated incident. If you are a Republican candidate and you learn from the Scozzafava incident that you have to be at least a fiscal conservative, or at least a conservative on some issues, in a blue state or a blue district, you don't have a Scozzafava situation. Also, every congressional district is its own animal. What works in one does not always work in another. Thus, I merely caution against viewing this as some national trend. One win does not a trend make. And, the lesson that can be learned from it can prevent the situation from arising again. Posted by: Mallamutt at November 01, 2009 05:34 PM (V9SYy) 201

THOSE are the people who are ruining this for conservatism, not those of us, like you and I, who are going to people to vote Democrat, asking them why, and then explaining to them that the current Democrat Party does not represent their values anymore and here's why they should consider voting Republican. No, instead, DrewM and Ace and AllahPundit tell us that is "fantasy land" and instead of convincing conservative Democrats that the GOP is the conservative party, we should just say fuckit, we're never gonna persuade people, we better make the GOP Democrat-lite to try to win "moderates". I don't know what the hell is going to wake people up and realize that we are not losing because we aren't "nice" enough or "gratious" enough. "You have the mentality that it is quite alright to kill millions of babies out of "convenience". I am pro-choice, however that does not mean I am pro-abortion... I don't believe in late term or partial birth abortion, its a person and should be given up to adoption. But during the very stages, I think that serious hard decision should be up to the family.. and that decision should be respected... does this mean I think there should be a planned parenthood office in every neighborhood encouraging abortions... absolutely not. I guess it all depends on when one considers a life a life. as for the rationing with "death panels"... I'm not sure where the connection is b/w this and the abortion issue... I absolutely am against any government run heathcare in any form... it would open the door to socialized care that I do not want opened.. and I don't even want that door cracked open even for a bit mainly b/c it would drive so many doctors out of praictice, and then yes it would lead to rationing for those people who need help the most and would be dependent on some beaurcat in DC doling out rationed care. as for cap-n-trade, again, I don't see the connection b/w this and abortion.. I have huge issues agn cap-n-trade mainly b/c it would cause so much pain to busienesses and so many higher bills for americans... it does no good... and top of that .. just because we snark here, doesn't mean that's all we do, i suspect many of us have given both our time and money to the cause in various ways both large and small.
this IS Snarkville Posted by: shoey at November 01, 2009 04:58 PM Yep. I spent all last year doing what Ace and DrewM and AllahPundit and others say is impossible: persuading people. I worked on my entire office, I worked on my friends, I worked on my family. I made the case for why Obama was dangerous, I made the case for why McCain was better and I was 100% honest with them about everything I did not like about McCain. I earned their trust. Such that when they saw commercials ripping McCain or praising Obama, they came to me and asked me about these commercials and asked if they were true. I then presented to them the full context of what the commercials were talking about, we had discussions of where we agreed, where we disagreed, etc. I was just one person, but I did this with my office group of ~50 back when I worked at Ford, my office of 15 when I was laid off from Ford and had to go back working in house at my Engineering consulting firm, my 325+ Facebook friends, my distribution list of about 100 family, friends, softball friends, walleyball friends, etc. I'm just one person and I affected that many people. Think of the movie Pay it Forward. That was a simple thing of just affecting 3 people, who in turn affected 3 people, who in turn... etc I'm not sure who piss me off more, liberals... or "moderates" and so-called conservatives who keep saying "never gonna happen", "can't persuade" and "you live in fantasy land". It's easy for people like ace and DrewM and AllahPundit to pontificate about "never" this and call the rest of us "fantasy land" people when they don't get off their ass and do jack shit. Has there been any reporting of a Tea Party attended by any of the bloggers on this blog? How about AllahPundit? Has he gone to a Tea Party? Nope. But people like Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit are out there making a difference. As are hundreds of thousands of other Americans. All started by a few people who decided they weren't going to listen to the people saying "never", "can't" and "fantasy land". Posted by: Michael in MI at November 01, 2009 05:47 PM (ObTcs) 219
If you don't believe in fiscal conservatism, you are not a conservative, period. I used to think that meant you weren't a Republican, but that shit is right out the window these days. And I would generally agree with you, although I think George Bush really tested my belief in that as well. But sometimes around here I think we forget that there is a difference between ideology and being a political party. As a conservative, I would prefer that my candidates reflect my ideology, low taxes, pro-life, strong defense, small government, promotion of individual freedom. But political parties exist to win elections. That may be good. That may be bad. Whether it is good or bad is largely irrelevant because it is what it is. Ultimately, you decide whether you are a conservative or a Republican, or a conservative Republican or a whatever Republican or just a conservative. Just a reminder, parties and ideologies do not always have the same goal. It is the goal of the ideological advocate to win the argument. It is the goal of the political party to gain and maintain political power. At times, the 2 goals merge (see, e.g. Reagan in 1980). Sometimes, they do not. Thus, I am not at a point where I want to say NY-23 is a turning point for the conservative movement. Just too many odd things happened at the same time. I could be wrong. But, as I remind my own children of (and myself, frequently) sometimes patience and perspective are wonderful attributes to have. Posted by: Mallamutt at November 01, 2009 05:48 PM (V9SYy) 220

"the war to rid the conservative movement of the social issues." One of our own breed of handwringing squishes wrote that upthread. Rid the Conservative movement of social issues? Why? So we can be liberals with better discipline over our spending habits? Is that all there is? Are those my two choices? Shall I be a social liberal who is also a profligate spender, or shall I be a social liberal who occasionally and halfheartedly tries to balance the national checkbook? You don't care about social issues. Yet you constantly campaign against those who do, even when they agree with you on strictly fiscal questions-which you say are the critical ones. Right.

Captain America,
The place to win on social issues is not in national elections. You want to stop abortions, make it a state issue. I would doubt my beliefs are that different than yours, I just think we need to prioritize the battles and if we don't stop this fiscal madness, all the rest of the shit isn't going to matter a hill of beans. Conversing and blogging is all well and good but what now? Where do we go from here? What's the call to action? Online petitions? The formation of a true conservative PAC that will directly rebuke the RNC that financially backs and endorses *RINOs*?
Posted by: laceyunderalls at November 01, 2009 04:52 PM Pretty simple. The silent majority needs to get off its ass and stop being silent. Talk to family, talk to friends, talk to coworkers, talk to neighbors, talk to teammates on sports teams on which you're involved, talk to teachers, talk while out in public. In other words, SPEAK UP. Stop being silent and having people assume that the entire nation is made up of Obama-loving Communists. Many people are afraid to speak up, because they think they are alone. Well, we with the courage to speak need to start speaking and set the example for others to speak up as well. We don't need PACs, we don't need any organizations whatsoever. *I* am an organization. *YOU* are an organization. We conservatives are our own PACs. Send e-mails to friends, family and coworkers, talk with ff&c, network on Facebook with FF&C and network with other likeminded people on Facebook. I have 325+ contacts on Facebook, only 25+ of which I even know in person. ~300 are like-minded conservatives and America-loving people with whom I network and help spread info. Conservatism is supposed to be about individualism. Well, stop thinking we need some PAC or some kind of organization in order to make a difference. We don't. The individual makes the difference. One man with courage makes a majority. One million men with courage make a movement. Posted by: Michael in MI at November 01, 2009 05:54 PM (ObTcs) 228

I just wanted to note that it was more than a credible conservative candidate coming out in NY 23 to make this situation happen. So, shoey, who died and made you the leader of the conservative movement. Since you now speak for "us". Or because I am not willing to jump up and down and claim that this is the death to all RINOs am I no longer a conservative. I can't believe how many of you can't see the direct connection between our loss of traditional social values and the expansion of government. Every social value that gets marginalized or disappears translates into more welfare, a social program, more taxes. Some of you, dear morons, have the idea of "Well, people should be able to live however they want; it doesn't effect my life." But it does, morons. You pay for it, eventually. You pay for single moms. You pay for abortions. You support children because their dad isn't around. You pay for 'raising awareness' for homosexual rights in schools. You pay for sex-change operations. Just like you pay for anti-smoking propaganda, btw. You will end up paying for all of it, in some way or another. Now imagine what taxes and government would be like if we didn't pay for all these ridiculous things made prevalent by the Leftists. Posted by: Tweet at November 01, 2009 06:04 PM (f8+ox) 244

There is another war to be fought, and that's the war to rid the conservative movement of the social issues.
You are 100% wrong. Our big cities are shitholes because we ceded so much ground on social issues. The Left attacked America by destroying the American family and American values. Posted by: Tweet at November 01, 2009 05:25 PM Yep. And the destruction of the American family and American values led to the welfare state. Which, whaddayaknow, affects *fiscal* issues. We've been browbeaten into accepting abortion and single moms. I mean, what difference does it make to me a some 18 year old girl in Boston wants to have a few abortions or pump out a few bastards? I pay for it, that's how it impacts my life. So a conservative, or a even a reasonable person, does not need to consider the moral implications of human genocide or having children out of wedlock. Tweet at 243-- It's not that some of us, okay I should only speak for myself here, it's not that I don't see it, it's that I think we have to tread very carefully in how we address those issues. If I'm talking to a fence-sitter, I'm going to hit the key points: at the end of the day do you think the gov't can be your solution. Do you think it would be wise if we have the equivalent of the BMV or the Post Office running our health care? Do you think it's wise that each household in the US could poetntially pay $3,000 more by way of energy bills or consumer goods because therethere has been a one percent increase in global temperatures that may or may not be created by man? To me, making it about the ineffectiveness of the gov't is more sound than saying, oh that hillbilly Tiffany just had another kid and you're going to be paying for it. Or explaining to people that the Constitution is in fact a document of liberation rather than the negative document claimed it be, is probably more persuasive than saying yeah those there were three trannies in jail that want a sex change operation on your dime, can you believe that?? I *think* it's about making it all about the bigger picture: gov't intrusion and the nanny state and less about those that choose a different lifestyle from us. Again I'm not saying to dismiss your points--they're all valid and mostly true. But it's not wise to claim we want respect as inviduals when we rip on those individuals that may make different choices than we do.

You gotta admit the dems have done a great job of blurring the lines between parties. they have also done a spectacular job of making conservative as bad a label as racist. You conservatives have an uphill battle that you may not be able to win for twenty years. They have so infused American society and people have been so trained in PC that anyone who dares to say anything not PC gets shunned and labeled and marginalized. More and more been thinking that there is the political elite, their supporters and then those who don't buy the new mindset, mostly you guys. It's scary out there.

Thus is Americanized Christianity/belief in God. A God of convenience only. In other words, it's the same as the current GOP. I stand for this, except for when I don't. I believe in God, except for when I want Him to sit it out. Brilliant. Posted by: Michael in MI at November 01, 2009 06:13 PM (ObTcs) Umm, not at all what I was saying, but sure. And allcaps wasn't really necesssary. the rest of us can actually read in a standard font. . My point was that we're not going to convince people by injencting "my God" into the debate. Why can't we just say, "well unlike liberals who seems to mock any form of religion, we go with the notion that you can worship how you like, just respect the fact that we will do the same". That's pretty much as far as that conversation should go. Posted by: laceyunderalls at November 01, 2009 06:26 PM (SS3sf) 276
Or explaining to people that the Constitution is in fact a document of liberation rather than the negative document claimed it be, is probably more persuasive than saying yeah those there were three trannies in jail that want a sex change operation on your dime, can you believe that?? Seriously? You think the average American (who has been educated by the NEA goons) with a short attention span will respond better to a discussion about the intent of the Constitution rather than simply pointing that thanks to the Democrats, you'll be paying for some criminal's sex-change operation? The only sensible people in the country are the Conservatives, and the rest of the nation is made up of idiots and loons. (Independents and Democrats) My long experience in dealing with humans has led me to one specific conclusions. Some people simply CANNOT learn except by the HARD way. The Leftist constituency is just plain nuts stupid, and they are incapable of learning. The independents are capable of learning, but only after they've had their head pounded into the dirt by pain and misery. If we let the leftest loons do what they've been trying to do, it will soon be apparent to the independents which side they should have been on. This might very well happen regardless of whatever we can do to stop it. I hope not, but everyone needs to be prepared for a sudden drop... . as for the rationing with "death panels"... I'm not sure where the connection is b/w this and the abortion issue...
Posted by: johnc_recent_EX-democrat at November 01, 2009 05:45 PM The connection is simple. Abortion is about sacrificing a life for convenience of another. Death Panels are sacrificing the elderly and the infirm for the lives of others. It's the same general mentality. If you think it's quite alright to allow certain people to die for the sake of others to live "better", then that same mentality can be used to support death panels and rationing. If all life is not sacred, then no life is sacred. Why should it be okay for us to respect the decision to kill a baby, but not respect the decision to kill off the elderly? The elderly lived their lives. Let them die off, so they stop costing us so much financially. I see no difference between the cold heartedness and downright evil mentality of thinking killing a baby is okay and allowing the elderly to die is okay. As you said, I guess it all depends on your definition of life. How about we say that once one reaches the age of 75, they are no longer "living", but merely existing. Therefore, they deserve the same care that a 1st trimester baby deserves in the eyes of pro-choicers: none. See where I'm going with this? Pro-choicers have already accepted that not all life is sacred. Fine, then we can also redefine life for the elderly and the infirm. Death Panels and rationing is simply taking the pro-choice mentality to end of life care. In my opinion, those people who are pro-choice and determining what life is at the beginning stages of life as are despicable in their views as those who are pro-death panels and determining what life is at the end stages of life. The fact that pro-choice people can't see this just baffles me. Posted by: Michael in MI at November 01, 2009 06:28 PM (ObTcs) 281

Posted by: johnc_recent_EX-democrat at November 01, 2009 05:45 PM Same thing. Cap and trade is about saving the world from destruction from global warming. When people are told that it will make life horrible to live for most people -- and, in fact cause many people to die -- we are told that is the price we must pay to save our children and grandchildren. Again, it's saying that certain lives are worth more than others. We must suffer and die now in order to save our children in the future. As you said, it depends on what life you consider a life. The fact that we cannot all agree that all life is sacred and we are even considering that some life is less sacred than others, is just downright disheartening. John McCain, during his campaign, made it clear he fell for the Democrat B.S. when he said, "As president, I don't want to tell a soldier in our military that his family has to go back their own country." Eric Holder is right; we are a nation of cowards. We pussed out on social issues that are necessary for the survival of our country. Posted by: Tweet at November 01, 2009 06:38 PM (f8+ox) 299
The libs say "so you want to go back to "bakc alley abortions", do you want the poor to have no alternative? We have to have abortions because otherwise women will die." I really hate that argument. If, tomorrow, Roe v. Wade was overturned, abortions would neither become legal or illegal. Instead, the right to regulate abortions would default back to the individual states. Thus, states like New York and Vermont, for example, would probably have abortion if Roe was overturned much like you have it today. Other states would impose strict restrictions. A fair number of states would have a mix, some regulations more restrictive that what the Supreme Court allows but not an outright ban. The significant difference would be that the states, and not 9 unelected officials, would make the decision. Which is how it should be. Posted by: Mallamutt at November 01, 2009 06:38 PM (V9SYy) 300

Agreed with that statement but...Organizaion does help to demonstrate the strength and cohesion of your movement. Look at the tea parties--w/out organization and social networkng sites it would not merely be the succcess it has been. Individuals and individualism is great. But individual strength in numbers is even better.
Posted by: laceyunderalls at November 01, 2009 06:04 PM I understand. My point is that why are people sitting around at this point asking "what can I do?" I've been speaking up for years, since I became politically aware and astute starting around 2004. I have not stayed silent, I have not allowed people to spew BS around me and go uncorrected. I have spoken up. And, in the process, if in public, others hear this. When I have done this at work, others who had been quiet and felt they were alone, have come over to my cube and said "hey man, I agree with you on what you said earlier. I have some more ideas... what do you think about..." and a new networking contact has been established. All because I had the courage to stand up and speak my values, principles and beliefs and not sit on my ass and wait around for some PAC to develop or some organization to develop. Yes, I agree they help. I'm not saying DON'T form them or join them. I'm saying you are your own PAC. You don't need a PAC to send out e-mails to your distribution lists, to post things on your Facebook so that 300+ other people see it, who then send it to their Facebook friends and on and on , or to just speak up among friends, family and coworkers. How do you think the memes got spread about Bush and the war effort? The media, sure, but also word of mouth. Not everyone watches the news. But people started talking about things with family, friends and coworkers and then memes spread like wildfire, even those which were not true. So word of mouth works. "Pay it Forward" works. People simply need to stop accepting the status quo of being the "silent majority" and start being the VOCAL majority. Look how the Tea Parties formed. Word of mouth. Started out small. Then got more exposure and more word of mouth and more people saying "YEAH! YES! I like this! I want to get involved!" And they did. And the movement has grown and grown. All because of the courage of a few people to not wait for a PAC, not wait for their Representatives to get their heads out of their asses and represent them better, not wait for the media to help us. No, a few courageous people decided to get up and be heard. And 9 months later, here we are with a movement. You know why the Left has been winning the last 2-3 election cycles? Because they decided not to be silent. They were out there being vocal, being involved, being active and... persuading... people. It can be done. *I've* done it. I've seen others do it. I believe a stay-at-home mom in the Pacific Northwest was actually the founder of the Tea Party movement who got it going with her little gathering back in January. Anyone can do it. But that is the key: DOING. Speak, do, inform, educate, inspire. It can be done. It is being done. Posted by: Michael in MI at November 01, 2009 06:53 PM (ObTcs) 331

If we all had three things (and only three) we needed out of the Republican Conservative party, what would they be?
Here are my three: 1. A deep respect for the dignity of every individual. We aren't merely members of a class. We aren't a collective. We are each individuals with separate goals and dreams and aspirations. 2. A deep understanding that a leader must have wisdom. Wisdom is the sum of both book knowledge and the experiences of the past. Don't go flying into the latest flashy theory to be your salvation. History should be your guide. 3. A deep commitment to a financially prudent lifestyle, and its application to government. No big spending schemes. Don't go deeply into debt. Live on less than you make. Shop for bargains. Please join me (a sworn dedicated Republican in a shocking pink dirigible-sized pants suit) in voting for Bill Owens (the Democrat) on Tuesday. To address the tough challenges ahead, we must rise above partisanship (by becoming pro-Democrat) and politics and work together (by voting for the Democrat and ignoring conservatives, not to mention lying to every single one of you, suckers... I'm looking at you, Newt).

Not so sure about that. She talks and the political conversation changes immediately. That doesn't happen for some dumb hick from Alaska. She might not have an encyclopedia of political knowledge in that brain, but she knows what she knows and more importantly she knows what she doesn't know and when to seek advice. Who would you rather have as president a Gore or Obama who doesn't know when to ask for help or a Reagan, B. Clinton or Palin who knows their limits? Note: I'm not equating B. Clinton politically to the other two, but he did know how to lead. Posted by: Just Another Poster at November 01, 2009 07:05 PM (HAdov) 350

I believe most of the Founders were dead set against political parties. As they knew that they would lead people to put "party over principle". They were right.
Yet many of the founders (Adams, Jefferson, etc.) belonged to parties. As humans, we often have aspirational beliefs and reality actions. I'd have to go back and check statements made during that era to find out which founders spoke out against Parties and warned of their dangers. Yeah, I have sen that too. Actually, I think it was Washington. Of course, Washingotn understood he had the first Presidency wrapped up. So, it is always easy to be virtuious (spelling, I know) when you are getting what you want. That is why my 16 year old daughter loves me when I let her have the car. And, I agree, that one does tend to lose one's moral fiber when political parties get involved. However, they are a way of life. Life involves a series of trade offs. The challenge is to recognize what trade offs are acceptable and what are not. Sadly, it seems any trade off to retain political power is acceptable to some. So 99% here agree that RINO's (The old kind, not the new kind that was just, righteously, created...) are full of sh#t, useless, and are THE reason the Repub brand is now null and void. Eff 'em, right? No more support, AT ALL, for any of them!
So tell me. Why on earth are all of you still here? Ace and Drew M, are RINO's (the old kind) to the bone. (We need to adapt, give a little, so we can win!). That, or they just want to get your dander up to generate traffic (Hey! Just like that Allah @sshole they so worship!). So it's traffic, or they are what you all say you are against. Geez, are we becoming HA? Now we have posters loving Meghan McCain as some kind of political diva. As for Dede... yeah another RINO who was really a beard for the Dems... Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., was among those who urged Dierdre K. Scozzafava to endorse Democratic congressional candidate William L. Owens, the senator's spokesman said Saturday. The spokesman, Maxwell Young, said the senator called a number of north country political leaders after Ms. Scozzafava suspended her campaign and had more than one conversation with the Republican candidate ahead of her announcement. He said the senator also called other Democratic leaders about the situation, including White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.[snip] A Democratic source said that Scozzafava and her husband, Ronald P. McDougall, met with U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, D-Huntington, and state Democratic Committee Chairwoman June F. O'Neill at a restaurant in Gouverneur on Saturday afternoon to discuss the endorsement. http://tinyurl.com/ylmv9hv

Regarding re-defining RINO: Are you some kind of douchebag? First liberals redefine "Better dead than red" now some douche here wants to redefine RINO? The language exists for clarity in communication. Trying to change the meaning of words that are used in communication screws up communication. This is why Liberals love to screw over the language, it is easier to confuse people than it is to actually win an argument on logic.

"Surprise Surprise: Dede is a democrat -- sells out the GOP for the liberal agenda of Nancy Pelosi Statement from Doug Hoffman Campaign: Senior Communications Advisor Rob Ryan said, "This afternoon Dede Scozzafava betrayed the GOP. She endorsed a Pelosi Democrat who will spend more, tax more, and push the liberal agenda that is dragging down this nation. Doug Hoffman represents the revolution that is taking place against high taxes. Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats are desperate. They are throwing everything they have at us but we're fighting back. I say we move past Ms. Scufafavaravao's endorsement of the Democrat, and we should now pay attention to her reasons. I blame Sarah Palin for all of it, Ms Scheforavazah is the type of candidate that we should all be proud to have in the halls of Congress!
Aww, F it. I just can't sock this one. From now on when I want to call someone the seaward, I'll just call them a "Scozzafava". As someone who used to be a D, these GOPer's who want to get along with the Dems are just GOPer's that got their heads patted by the Dems when they were in power. These are the so called "fiscal" conservatives that are lionized as being fiscally responsible when they vote for the Dems taxe increases while crowing that they kept government spending in check by raising it only 15% this year! Given the choice, I'd rather have a D as my congressman than a squishy R. At least with the D I can have a rubber out when they decide to screw me while the squish R will do it bareback when I'm not looking. Posted by: MrCaniac at November 01, 2009 08:55 PM (6i55m) 498

It's interesting, the other night before all this stuff began Greta was trying to get him to say on her show definitively that he was running in 2012. But now, now after this he is a laughing stock. Wonder how his endorsement evolved. Wonder if you say you are considering a run you become a target to be dispensed with immediately?

Well, well, well ...
Politico: Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) Met Secretly With Scozzfava Even though she had already spoken to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), Scozzafava was apparently rattled and needed some face-to-race reassurance that backing a Democrat was a good idea, according to people familiar with the situation. Plus her cellphone voice mailbox was overloaded with Democratic messages and stopped taking incoming calls. Scozzafava left the meeting more relaxed and clearly leaning towards endorsing Owens over Conservative Party hopeful Doug Hoffman, a person familiar with the exchange told me. Yes, I disagree with what Newt did, but which of you has done one, one-million of what this man has to advance conservatism in America? Hmmmmm? Newt managed to get passed Welfare Reform that even Reagan couldn't manage. He stopped Clinton dead in his tracks and kept him from pulling the kind of crap that Obama is doing. You miserable sacks of crap. One mistake and suddenly the man who pretty much defined conservatism for a couple of decades is a RINO, is a "sellout." He made a decision that you, in your no-accomplishing-a-damn-thing-for-conservatism-in-America living rooms disagree with and now you're ready to throw him under the bus. Pitiful. Sad. Rather be "right" then actually accomplish anything in America. Rather "stick to your principles" and watch American Soldiers die in Afghanistan then bend and get a majority against Obama. Your kind, the Perot kind, got us eight years of Clinton. Good thing a man like Newt was there to defend America against Clinton while you safely sat at home wallowing in your smug Pure Conservative ideals. The logic of inclusiveness seems to be that conservatives should accept and support moderates as Republicans in purplish parts of the country because unaffiliated centrist-minded voters may gravitate to them precisely because they are moderate and because those voters are fearful or put off by conservatives. I prefer to take the approach that if conservatives stay true to their values and insist that Republican candidates espouse conservative views and policies, centrist voters will gravitate toward those candidates. Why should we dilute the GOP with RINOs who are effectively liberals? What does that gain us in the long term or even in the medium term? I believe that there are a lot of people who voted for Obama who now regret what they did and are looking for an alternative. We--i.e., conservatives--should give them that alternative. To do so we must be clear and unequivocal about what we are and what we believe in. Maybe, just maybe, they'll gravitate to us. They may not like everything we have to offer but they may like enough of what we have to offer to vote for conservative candidates. In the past Republicans like Gingrich and McCain have taken the approach that conservatism is repellent to a majority of a voters and have therefore offered up Republican candidates who are not only not conservatives but are not really Republcians either. In other words they do not have any confidence in conservatism. Maybe it's time to explore the possibility that what centrist voters find repellant about Republicans is that they are Republicans. Being conservative may not be the cause of the repulsion centrist voters feel. They can't stand many Republicans because so many Republican officer holders are mere politicians, unprincipled jerks. Blazer in 539 makes my point for me (as attempted in 540). I guess what I'm saying is that candidates who run as Republicans should actually be Republicans and not Republicans in name only. Is that too much to ask or expect? Of course this means taking a certain ideological stance on a range of issues, a stance that I hope and trust would be regarded as conservative. This is not a question of enforcing ideologically extremist purity. It is merely a case of being what you are and what you claim to be and not something else which is inimical to being a Republican. Either you're a Republican or you're not. Presumably this determination is made by comparing what you are to the party platform. And if the party platform is too liberal/Democrat in its cast than we should just say the jig is up and call ourselves Democrats. Posted by: Roughcoat at November 01, 2009 10:30 PM (CZf93) 550

He kept asking tonight who is more likely to vote with the people's wishes. He was coming to the conclusion that we often come to, no one. Well, that would seem to be an argument for both parties to enforce ideological purity in their respective ranks. And by ideological purity I mean hammering out a party platform, which becomes your ideology--if only for an election cycle--and then nominating and running candidates who will support the platform. As things now stand nobody knows what the hell either party stands for. Both parties are all over the place on what they say they are. Which gives the office holders of both parties plenty of latitude to do whatever they want to do and not vote according to the wishes of the people who elected them. Y-not: Thanks. I'll read it. What do you think of it? Is it a conservative platform? It seems to me that writing the party platform is the first place conservatives should get involved. Instead of first looking around for candidates who seem to have the right stuff, we should first write the platform and then find people who are willing to run as Republicans who will support their party's platform. I confess I didn't read the party platform and never got involved in trying to influence what it said. I stupidly believed that if someone ran for office as a Republican he was actually--a Republican. And I had an idea in my head of what it meant to be a Republican--it meant that you were more or less conservative. What a maroon I've been. McCain with his obnoxious stance on immigration knocked the scales from my eyes. From now on I'm going to try to get involved in GOP internal politics through the process of writing the party platform. The platform comes first, the people chosen to run as Republicans second. Why is writing the platform so important? It's not.
It isn't? How else do you establish what the party stands for? Or what a candidate stands for? I thought that a platform would serve the same purpose as the Constitution. You put it in writing and everyone figuratively signs off on it. Then, if a candidate goes rogue, you show them the platform and say: hey, you signed off on it. You're not being a Republican. It's like, if you don't show people what the boundaries are, they're going to act as though there aren't any boundaries. And there won't be anything you can do about it. Haven't been around much, haven't read thoroughly and sort of guerilla posting...but most people assumed that when she dropped out of the race that she was doing it for the sake of the republican party and knowing she would keep her seat in the legislature. Plus she was watching her numbers plumet. Everyone is shocked by her endorsement of Owens and more so by the fact that a tiny little inconsequential district in upstate NY was so important that it had to be guided along......
I don't understand why anyone would attack ace. If you report in real time it's tougher than you think...as Batchelor says "things in the NY 23 are moving fast, maybe way too fast". I just let my own little love note in Newt's thread, countering some moron (not the good kind) who defended Newt by repeating Newt's "Hoffman is a carpetbagger" smear.
I'll repost it here, for those who aren't aware of Newt's smear: "According to Gingrich, Hoffman DOES NOT LIVE in New York's 23rd congressional district" And this is just another reason you should be angry at Gingrich. 1) Hoffman lived in the 23rd for years, and he never moved. The 23rd left -him- in the 2000 redistricting. Do you seriously think that, if you live in a district, and then someone changes the shape of the district to exclude your house in an effort to gerrymander the district, that you are a "carpetbagger"? Really? 2) If so, then Gingrich is the worst sort of hypocrite, because a very similar thing happened to him in 1992 (in his case, Georgia picked up an extra seat in the House as a result of the 1990 census), which changed the districts around, and he thus also ran in a district he didn't technically live in. 3) Gingrich either knew this, which makes him both disingenuous and a hypocrite, or he was easily conned by a liberal masquerading as a Republican. Since this was discovered and published all over conservative blogs a few days after he attacked Hoffman, and I never heard Newt own up to it, I'm gonna go with the former. If I just missed it and he did apologize for the smear, well, then he's just responsible for vastly expanding the reach of a Democrat smear without checking the facts. And this is his only mistake? Please. How about carrying water for Nancy Pelosi on the entire global warming trojan horse for socialism nonsense? This is hardly the first time Gingrich has abandoned principle for power. Thankfully, he'll wind up with neither." Qwinn Posted by: Qwinn at November 01, 2009 11:48 PM (SxA2Q) Posted by: Roughcoat at November 01, 2009 11:59 PM (CZf93) 580

As long as the rest of America uses NYC as a measure of all things Enlightened then schizophrenia is certain to follow. For example; Independent Moderate life-long Democrat turned Republican turned Independent Bloom berg said he 'saved and created jobs'; how very moderate and independent of him. Liberal Thompson has shown us there is a war going on between certain constituencies around this town nobody is talking about. America, if you think you're going to find answers to difficult questions from anywhere in the NE quardrant you are wrong; the NE is crazy fruit-loops.
