ABC Poll: Voters would choose public option over a bipartisan bill

The numbers:

Fifty one percent said they preferred the public option; 37 percent said they preferred a bill with some support from Republicans in Congress. Six percent said neither and seven percent expressed no opinion.
What's really amazing is how consistent these numbers are with the last question on the poll (pdf link):

abcpollquestion.jpg

Look at those numbers. What a crazy random happenstance, huh?

Thank goodness for the WaPo/ABC polling unit, or we never would have known that voters who intend to vote Democrat are supportive of Democrat policies.

40 Tapper is defending his pollster again.  The problem is still the same.  Ask the same question two different ways, one with "should the government give/provide a competitive insurance option" and one with "should the government run a taxpayer funded insurance program".

Furthermore, ask the people this.

"Do you want to pay taxes today for programs that will not be available until 2013?"

Posted by: WTFCI at October 30, 2009 10:31 AM (EbpbH)

41 Look, when the question basically leads towards "Do you want free stuff"?  It's going to poll positively.

Change that to "Want your taxes to go up and local business to be hobbled by onerous regulations and fees for something 92% of you already have"?  The numbers might shift a bit.

I have never, personally. However, that question strikes me as another version of the Pauline Kael Gambit, referring to the New Yorker film critic who famously said, after the landslide victory of Nixon in 1972, essentially, "How could Nixon have won? I don't know anybody who voted for Nixon!"

In other words, while sampling and internals are both important factors to consider when evaluating the results of any poll, Statistics is indeed a viable method by which certain information can be gleaned and inferred. Just 'cuz any one of us personally hasn't participated in polling doesn't mean polling isn't worthwhile.

There's a major flaw in all of these "national poll" numbers, whether it's for congressional preference or whatever.

We do not elect Congressmen nationally - we elect them on a state by state basis.  If California and NY (huge population centers) report 80% in favor of the democrat position and the other 48 states show a 52 - 48 republican advantage, the national polls are going to show a mathematical advantage to the democrats even though 48 of the 50 states are against it.

That's stating the position at its most extreme, but you get the point. Only state by state polls would have any meaning, but those are a) too expensive and b) wouldn't give the "correct" results, so they are not done.

80 I listen to a lot of NPR, PBS, etc and the propaganda for the public option is relentless. I think every person that has ever had insurance canceled or lost a job after getting sick must have a publicist.

To listen to all their chatter, you would think you would have to step over the dying each morning on the way to work. I think this poll reflects that. most people think that we should take care of the uninsured and the Dems are selling the public option as the only solution to that problem.

This bill started out as a solution to the recession, then a solution to high costs, then a solution to the uninsured, and now it has settled as a solution to the hoards of dying sick that (a) are under 65 and ineligible for medicaid, (b) work and make enough money that they do not qualify for medicaid, (c) have not suffered a catastrophic problem which is covered by most state plans (d) do not have a chronic illness covered by medicaid, (e) are not illegal (wink wink) and (f) are not wealthy. These are the people (person?) dying in the streets and we must look to Stalin and Mao to solve this problem! The Progressives will pay any price to save that poor sick and dying soul.

Told them I was a pagan green .
Strangely they called back the next night with another poll . I live in the rural south . To say a pagan green is an outlier in that demographic is something of an understatement , yet they called back for my opinion . Makes one wonder about polling in general and media polling , in particular .

80 - Exactly and which is why we have bankruptcy laws. You discharge your castrastrophic illness debt and keep your house. . . The system is already set up to deal with this stuff. Imperfectly of course, but you GOTTA be KIDDIN me if you think the 1900 page monstrosity is going to lead to a perfect solution. Its gonna be a mongolian cluster frak.  If you really don't want people to lose their house - its a butt load cheaper an easier than this bill.  I will write the law right here:

Universal Homestead exemption:   In all 50 states and territories of the United States of America, the primary residence of an insolvent debtor shall be an exempt asset from bankruptcy in where at least 20% of the outstanding debt of the debtor is due to medical expenses.

Hey look what I just did - I prevented anyone from losing thier house due to catastrophic medical bills - I didn't spend a dime, I didn't kill a forest, I didn't increase the debt, I didn't take over 1/6th of the U.S. economy and I didn't create a single death panel or add in away freaking way to the size of the Federal Goverment.

See - its not a one page long. And I'm not an Ivy league grad either - just a stupid moron who went to state schools, and who clings bitterly to my bible, my wife and kids and a sense of right and wrong.  (Which is to say - VALUES)

Is there some sensible reason why the Republican's haven't countered with some this simple????

Let me guess, the sample was composed of 51% Democrats.  The median IQ of the sampled population was also 51.  Given 7 more years of this, 51% will also be the total tax rate.

Coincidentally, the purchasing power of an average week's wage will be $51, based on the value of the dollar in 1951.

88 I've run calling centers for polling before. If done properly, these polls can be truly random, with the folks at the phone never knowing who they are calling until they dial, and me the operator dumping phone numbers into a pool that are truly random minus those who had requested in the past to be removed.

But one thing that must be remembered when looking at any poll - who paid for it? When I did this along my road to now teaching how to design a quantitative political analysis, I was taught 2 basic things by the professor (who was one of 2 actual right wingers I had in college) - if you have a bad sample (which will happen at times if it's truly random and not stratified in any way) say so. Or, if the person paying for it wants it to look a certain way, make it do so in order to get paid again later.

I've ran random polls. I've stratified polls to get 'x'% of a certain type of  respondents. I've played with polls to find certain results to please those who paid for it. Always ask yourself who paid when looking at any poll.

92 Follow up from 85  - add to that 0 interest loans from Govt up to 25,000 to cover castastrophic medical expenses -  to cover medical bills that are in that range.  Prove you have no insurance to cover bill, or that insurance will not pay remainder, provide the bills. Agree to pay back in 15 years. Fund it with a mandatory fee on malpractice case filings, and a tax on insurance policies. (see not playing favorites).

93 Joe,
I think if you scratch the surface of these "lost house due to illness" claims and you will find they lost the house because they could no longer work and could not afford the mortgage with only their medicaid benifits. They have insurance to cover that too, but there is no cure for someone that has assets they are unwilling to cover with insurance until after it is too late.

Posted by: jcp at October 30, 2009 11:25 AM (DHNp4)

94 93 - whether it is directly due to bills or due to inability to work  - exempt the home from collection. Unless its unrelated to illness.  Thus need debt to be at least 20% medical or some trigger number. Erase best emo argument from Dems in covering uninsured.  If you do that you remove one leg of the chair they are standing on.

95 Look at those numbers. What a crazy random happenstance, huh?

Wha? I don't get it? What's your point?

Is this a math question? I was told there'd be not math.

I got one Leftard bint to reconsider the public option by simply reminding her of what competition looked like.

I said: "Remember those phone ads in the 90s? 'We'll pay you to switch'? Imagine if the 1500 or so health insurance companies in the US were all competing for your dollars. Think the gov't would ever do that?"

98 Fifty one percent liberal leaning respondents said they preferred the public option; 37 percent conservative leading respondents said they preferred a bill with some support from Republicans in Congress. Around Six percent said neither and aboutseven percent expressed no opinion.

I modified the paragraph after applying about 0.5 secs of the analysis skills that I learned in elementary school.

Quite a shocking finding, eh?

Keep up the good work, MSM. You're earning every cent I'm paying you.

Have any of you ever been contact for a poll? Ever?

Couple of times. One time was clearly a candidate push poll. (For the unaware, push poll is where Candidate A does a poll. You indicate you support Candidate B. The pollster then ask, would you be willing to support Candidate B if you knew he cheated on this taxes/wife/dog).

I did alot of push polling in the early 90s. So it was a blast. I reworked their push poll for the pollster while doing the poll to make it still effective but less obvious they were push polling. Wound up in a discussion about why the poll was shit - it was too obvious a push and that anyone with half a brain would figure it out. After it was done, she asked the obligatory do you support Candidate A or B - clearly with the hope of chaning my mind. Told her no, wasted your time. But have a nice night.

102 If anything this poll under states the number of Americans in favor of the public option so that's the way we're spinning it and you can trust us since unlike Fox we're a real news organization.

Posted by: MSNBC at October 30, 2009 05:04 PM (ATDUX)

103

Where's the poll that asks:

1) Do you think Congress should have the same healthcare they want to mandate for the rest of us ?

2) Do you think union members should have the same healthcare that they want to mandate for the rest of us ?

3) If your Congress-weasel won't accept the "public option" for his family's own healthcare, would you still vote for them ?

And that's not even touching the ludicrous budgetary juggling, illegal alien issue, abortion issue, death panels,  "people dying every day" yet this bill not taking effect until four years from now, etc...
