Good evening all morons and moronettes and welcome to Tuesday, the boringest day of the week.

Ernest Shackleton's Whisky Stash Discovered in Antarctica
Apparently his 1907 expedition left behind two cases of Mackinlay whisky under the floorboards of an Antarctic hut. It's expected that the whisky will taste heavy and peaty which was the style back then.

Editor, how have they proposed paying for that thing?  (Heh!  Is Eastern WA going to get screwed again?)  I'm already looking at the stupid toll on 520 (which they think will be 6 bucks round trip) plus the 12 bucks a day I pay to park my car at Swedish.  It might just behoove me to stay home (and if we get health care reform, I'm seriously thinking I don't want to be a nurse any more).  I was actually shocked that you guys didn't vote "yes" on that stupid bag tax.  Seattle is always voting yes on taxing themselves---for parks, for Pike Place market, etc., etc.

Conservators discovered the wooden cases in January 2006. They were unable to dislodge the crates, but are going in with special tools in January during the Antarctic summer to try to retrieve them. An international treaty dictates that the crates, and any intact bottles that are inside, remain in Antarctica unless they need to be taken off the continent for conservation reasons. The whisky's condition after a century of freezing and thawing is unknown.

I'm going through this whole routine of charging up the Shuffle, going to the iTunes Store, and I have a major case of deja vu! In fact, just looking at that damn shuffle, I'm sure I own one somewhere! In other words, I have bought a totally redundant iPod device and I've lost one, somewhere in my house, but the darned things are the size of your little finger and you'll never find one, especially if you've moved 5 times in the last year like me and your stuff is packed in about 3 different places. In fact, I'm pretty sure my old iPod is purple in color.

131 We have a few tunnels around town.    The railroad tunnel under downtown, and the two big I-90 tunnels through Mt. Baker.   I bet they're pretty well built, and would hold up through all but the strongest earthquakes.  The Viaduct is an old design, built on fill near the seawall.  Very likely to fail in an earthquake- the Feb 2001 6.8 quake almost took it out.

Well, the problem with a tunnel to replace the viaduct is the seawall issue, their thinking is that the liquefied sand will just flow around the tunnel, but everyone seems to avoid the issue of where exactly the water will go when the seawall collapses.

For those of you who have no clue what we are talking about, this handy animation of the viaduct collapsing is fun to watch:

In this neighborhood the little beggars still knock on doors with the light off.

If I could arrange it so that I could see the parents with their kids - the cute little kids - and then magically evaporate before the packs of unescorted kids and, worse still, the friggin' "teenagers" showed up, I would do Halloween.  I think it's sweet to see parents with their kids, but it seems like so few parents actually escort their kids (my mom always went with us).  On top of that, they spread the night out too much.  I never know when it's going to start and it never seems to end.

There's just no way in God's green earth that I'm going to deal with that - and a barking puppy - all night.

RushBabe, that's one reason I don't hand out candy any more. A couple of years ago one of my kids opened the door and there were three teen boys. BIG ones. Paul gave them candy and they said they wanted more, he kinda hemmed and hawwed and by this time my daughter went to the door and they started making comments to her. So I head out there and they are still demanding candy and making snarky remarks. I told them to get the eff off my property and they were gonna start in on me!!! Had to get my really mean face on and they left, but I sooo don't want to be here alone with the candy ordeal.

I'm sure they'd be hauling my ass in after I pull my gun on the little pricks.

177 lacey,

Re the etsy jewelry (which I Googled but didn't click on the links) that reminds me of the painting on the ceiling of one of the classrooms at my hs. It was the classroom of a very liberal, very feminist male teacher. One of the students, a girl I actually knew personally and was friends with a friend of mine, was allowed to paint a mural on the ceiling. She's really talented artistically and painted a flower on the ceiling. If you just looked at it, it's a pretty flower. If you knew what the flower was a metaphor for, you'd see it.

Dallas is a terrible place to live. It's nothing but a haven for illegal immigrants and the guilt ridden white liberals who enable them. Driving in downtown Austin today, saw a truck with a big bumper sticker in the window that simply said "POOP".

What made this sticker special was that the two middle letters were the jugears O logos. Keep in mind, this sticker was in downtown Austin, aka Moscow on the Colorado.

That worm, believe it is a turnin'.

Today's sticker also gave me the idea for another sticker assuming it hasn't already been done- DOOM using the same dumbass O logos for the two middle logos.

200 Dallas is a terrible place to live. It's nothing but a haven for illegal immigrants and the guilt ridden white liberals who enable them. The joke about the school district there is that it's just a daycare for the kids of illegals so they can  mow and clean the houses of the rich white liberals. It'd be funny if it wasn't true. The suburbs are nice though.

I think my friend's friend took inspiration from O'Keefe for her painting. She ended up going to NYU and I think still lives in Brooklyn. She's a nice Thai girl, but I guess she wasn't immune from the indoctrination.

I took a few art history course in college, so I'm kinda snooty about the art I like. My favorite is NeoClassical, Baroque and Rococo. I can barely stand most "modern" art. Like the stupid "paintings" that are just canvases painted all one color and the title of the piece is the color. It's so lame and it's not "deep." And don't get me started on performance art...

I do like Christo's brand of art just for the sheer size and oddness of it.

Actually, they didn't like "grog" per se, rum diluted with water to stop the hoarding of the rum ration to get really blitzed later, contrasted with getting the ration neat; and in later years, they had to drink it when issued. (And wiki lives up to its reputation, the water mixing didn't deter spoilage but caused it so the men couldn't save it up hidden.)

335 This is our corporate fascist future. Any business large enough, with a union presence, can now officially be on permanent corporate welfare. People like to make money, whether it's from private pockets or the public coffers. We can expect large business interests to have the following in mind: An indispensable part of the larger business plan will be to ensure that the gubmint thinks you are "too big to fail." Contribute to the one-party Democrat State, have some unions involved, and presto, your big corporation is on the permanent gubmint dole.

Nope. No permission was asked of parents. They didn't tell the parents in the syllabus, either. They just read it to us one day when we were all gathered in the MPR. It was all the females in my grade in the magnet program. I don't remember if I told my parents they read it because I didn't think anything of it. I forgot about after I left school that day.

Not that my parents were worried since I somehow managed to pop out of that lefty indoctrination camp a right winger.

Everything useful I learned in the 10th and 12th grades. Logic and reason and critical thinking were big themes then. And my 12th grade philo teacher would contemptuously call the more lefty kids in class "feelers." Cracked me up every time.

Saw Punishment Park, a Netflix dvd, tonight.

From 1971, its about Nixon rounding up hippies and sending them to death camps, so there's all kinds of dead hippies - yay!!!

Kind of a documentary, though. What was fascinating is how the film gave all the hippies time to scream in the camera about whatever the Hell they were screaming about ... and its NO different AT ALL from anything the Libtards are caterwauling about NOW.

Hilarious. For added fun, consider that its all just a projection fantasy, since the film kept hinting the hippies should just get guns and do the deed, you know, off the pigs, man.

There was already snow today in the passes (of course you can't have studded tires on til Nov. 1--a law that was made back before global warming existed, I'm sure).  No snow in Seattle.  The clowns who run the city can't do removal (hello, rubber tipped plows, sand not salt, etc., etc.)  It was horrible to drive around in.  The roads around the hospital I work at were the absolute worst!  Oh and driving in those ruts of ice!  Aye Carramba!

This brings to mind the early sexual indoctrination of school children at early ages in our public school system.

Also, a thought just hit me. In the Garden of Eden, Eve became "aware" first and then corrupted Adam. I wonder if this has any relation to how girls mature at a younger age before boys, and then corrupt them.

My year in 11th grade ended up being particularly bad. So bad, that they've toned it down considerably. My sister didn't get nearly the same tone I did when she went through the program 6 years after me. It was certainly educational, there's no doubt about that.

They don't do it to them when they are little girls though. They are only required to wear the hijabs or whatever the hair covering is called.

But if anyone remembers childhood, it was the girls who matured first and started being interested in boys and wanting to have boyfriends and all that. Meanwhile, boys had not matured yet and had no interest in girls. And would just run away or ignore them or make fun of them or whatever. But, the girls would keep at it, because, well, they were going through puberty and that was the natural reaction I guess.

Eventually, the boys caught up and were then pretty excited to have girls chasing them.

Funny thing though, when the boys started going through puberty and stopping running away and started chasing the girls, the girls didn't like it anymore and started being the ones running away (well some of them anyway).

And thus boys learn at an early age what it means to be teased by the female species. heh

Anyway, it was just a random thought. Thought it was an interesting parallel how Eve was "aware" before Adam, just like girls go through puberty (are 'sexually aware') before boys.

Where were you, katya???

My sister-in-law passed away last week.  We went to Southern Missouri to say good-bye and support my brother-in-law and their kids.  She was 50 and their kids were all grown, thank goodness.  She had ALS, which was good in one way in that they were able to prepare for it.  She made her bucket list and, I believe, made it most of the way through.  The traveled a lot and she got to see all her family a couple of times.  She was a good person and accoplished many things.  No regrets, except for a few things she wasn't able to finish.

I saw this on Drudge.

Ironic that Obama's DHS is telegraphing a desire to shut down 'certain websites' and civilian access to the Internet in response to this weak strain of flu, considering the fact that civilian Internet communications are the primary information sharing channels of his political opposition.
The Internet combined with talk radio is the biggest threat to Obama's globalist open borders amnesty agenda and other socialist reforms. The White House clearly has resentments towards any media not under the control of their masters.

Posted by: katya at October 28, 2009 01:24 AM (kbqJ9)

One interesting story. When my uncle was dying from it back in 1973, another uncle of mine - a musician - was playing at a televison gig amd Reggie Jackson was there. Jackson at that time was a NY Yankee, and my uncle spoke to Jackson about the ALS Foundation and about "lou Gehrig's Disease" which was what ALS was commonly known as back then. Jackson admired Gehrig tremendously and agreed to talk to the ALS people. Jackson became the national spokeman for the ALS Foundation after that and its recognition and funding went up exponentially after that. It was previously assumed that ALS was rare, but people then realized that it wasn't.

So my uncle's suffering (he passed away shortly afterwards) was not for naught.

577 >>So, the Taliban does not want Karzai, is that correct?

Ahmed Wali Karzai, brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, has long been accused of dealing drugs. Charges, and accusations, have never quite stuck. Nor has American pressure ever been brought to bear in earnest. The New York Times, in an explosive story, provides something of an explanation:
Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president and a suspected player in the countrys booming illegal opium trade, gets regular payments from the Central Intelligence Agency, and has for much of the past eight years, according to current and former American officials.
The agency pays Mr. Karzai for a variety of services, including helping to recruit an Afghan paramilitary force that operates at the C.I.A.s direction in and around the southern city of Kandahar, Mr. Karzais home.

The Thing (1982)
Scariest movie . . . ever!  The film follows a crew stationed at an Antarctic base stalked by a shape-shifting alien. Which member of the crew is the alien? The crew doesn't know, and neither does the audience until the creature begins one of its stomach churning transformations. If the scene where the guy's head sprouting insect legs to escape doesn't give you nightmares consult a therapist immediately.

Mystry, my friend and I almost ended up in Vincenza instead of Venezia because we called it by the wrong name and the conductor of the train gave us the wrong information. Luckily an Italian corrected our error and pointed us in the right direction.

Was that based on a SF short story?  'Cause one of the creepiest stories I ever read had that basic plot, crew stationed in Antarctica, they finally figured out who the alien was by testing its blood . . .

Ever look at a British sailor's daily ration of booze?
It was pretty impressive.

Right after Desert Storm in '91, we did a NATO Op in the Med.  Pat of that was I got to tour several Allies ships, the British being one.  At that time at least, they were still 'issued' two pints per day (I think), and if you didn't drink your two pints today, you have four pints tomorrow.

They explained that they would all take it easy during the week, and would drink up one dude's ration one weekend, the next guys' ration the next, and so on.

Alien (1979)
Sigourney Weaver: hot. Alien monster: ugly. Throw them together in a futuristic, highly stylized space battleground: beautiful. And terrifying. "Alien" was important not least because it showed that the science-fiction horror genre was one of possibility - this movie was also intelligently rendered, psychologically powerful, and, well, gross. Where else can find a bloody creature being birthed from a human surrogate?

Hey fluffy! This film was shot close to you..

Session 9 (2001)
A cleaning crew working at an abandoned mental hospital is an obvious recipe for scares. You just know that something bad is going to happen. And happen it does. It's only at the end do we - the audience - realize how crazy one of the crew members has been since the beginning. As an added bonus the film was shot at the former state hospital in Danvers, Mass.

What do you get when you cross a classic Kafka tale, a lot of goop, Geena Davis, and Jeff Goldblum? No, the answer's not "Reading Rainbow." "The Fly"(1986) is a psychological thriller as it flips human morality on its head (think twice before you crush that little ant under your foot). The movie also has enough special effects to make your stomach churn; and that maggot scene, well you get the idea.

641 He was just... well... he was completely incoherent and rambling and weirdly bloated and for a while Conan just kind of... well, let him bomb.

Then they did a cooking segment later on and there's Gary just kind of hiding out in the background until they convince him to come and join. The whole thing was just bizarre.

Posted by: LikeATimeBomb at October 28, 2009 03:47 AM (dwwPD)

2) Yes, women age like their mothers.  Men age like their fathers.  It's uncanny.

4) Dr Horrible taking over the Emmys was pretty awesome.
