Lieberman: I'll Vote With Republicans To Filibuster Health Care

Nice.

Lieberman did say he's "strongly inclined" to vote to proceed to the debate, but that he’ll ultimately vote to block a floor vote on the bill if it isn’t changed first.

"I've told Sen. Reid that if the bill stays as it is now I will vote against cloture,” he said.

“I can’t see a way in which I could vote for cloture on any bill that contained a creation of a government-operated-run insurance company,” Lieberman added. “It’s just asking for trouble – in the end, the taxpayers are going to pay and probably all people will have health insurance are going to see their premiums go up because there’s going to be cost shifting as there has been for Medicare and Medicaid.”

Lieberman said he “very much” wants to vote for health care reform but that he’s worried about stifling “the economic recovery we’re in” or adding to the federal debt.

Warning: Link goes to Politico but they are the ones with the story at the moment and I changed the part I excerpted to get to the filibuster quote.

If the Republicans stay together and vote no, Harry Reid needs all 58 Democrats and the 2 Independents that caucus with them to push this through. He just lost one.

There were stories earlier today where Olympia Snowe (R(ish)-History) said she will stay with the Republicans. I'm looking back for the links now and will update. In the meantime, no one let her answer the phone!

It's not done but it's good news.

Update:Snowe's statement wasn't as strong as I remembered it.

Sen. Olympia Snowe tells Fox's Trish Turner "at this point" she's a no on Reid Public Option. Says gambit "sends a terrible message."

Maybe we can pick up a Democrat or two more to make sure Snowe doesn't have her second history making moment this year.

Slublog passes along this story with more from Snowe. She seems pretty dead set against a government option but she has been wooed by Reid or history yet.

Quote [ace]: Here's the key quote from the above-linked article.

Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, expressed similar concerns. Democrats had hoped to have Snowe's support, since she endorsed a different version of health care reform on the Senate Finance Committee. But she said she cannot back Reid's plan. She said Reid's government plan would have an unfair advantage, even though the national program would have to negotiate rates with providers just like private insurance companies do.

"It does give the government a disproportionate advantage in the marketplace. They can set ... the prices and certainly negotiate those prices at whatever level," she told Fox News, adding that she was "surprised and disappointed" by Reid's decision.

Snowe wanted a proposal that would "trigger" a public plan down the road if the insurance companies do not meet certain benchmarks. She told Fox News that the CBO indicated her plan would yield $10-$15 billion in savings.

She said the lack of GOP support "sends a terrible message that [Democrats are] no longer interested in working with Republicans."

Senator Snowe, history is on the line. What should I tell them? You're not here? Okay, I'll tell history you're in a meeting.

So now the question is... which Republican is more liberal than Joe Lieberman, the democratic VP candidate from 2000?

Actually, if the Republicans could find a few more Libermann's, they actually would have a pretty attractice moderate candidate. A Libermann would do all right in some of the blue states.

Look, socially, Libermann is horrible (pro-choice, etc.). And he will always vote to confirm liberal judges. He was part of the Gang of 12 stuff. But, he is a fiscal conservative (ala William Proxmiar) and hawkish on defense (he may be the last of the Scoop Jackson Democrats). So yea, as far as conservative issues go, Libermann is actually right with 2 of the 3 stools that I was always lead to believe made up the Republican party.

Why would joe do this?

He is a bit of fiscal conservative. And he is one of those guys who, after the stimulus (he did vote for that), ect. is begining to wonder how much more can we afford.

He also is going to ahve to run 3rd party again for re-election and may be triangulating here to get the Republicans to nominate another tin can to run so its really a 1 on 1 race between him and whoever the Democrats nominate. So, Liebermann is picking up on the vibe that deficiets are going to be a major issue for the next couple election cycles.

43 #18, by the way, I agree with you.

Lieberman isn't horrible. . .FOR A DEMOCRAT (even though nominally, he isn't one anymore).

The problem is that Lieberman is considered such an outlier in the ever-more-lurching-leftward Democrat party, he was effectively tossed out.

Why is he going to play the "spoiler" here?

He's a politician, and not being a Democrat anymore, he doesn't have to play party suckup.   Perhaps he is ideologically against a public option, but he has to certainly know that the public is against it.  So, voting with the public preference here is smart politics.

For the Dems. . .payback's a beeyotch.

Looking Closely - my thought was that for certain blue states (New, York, Vermont, ect. ect.) Libermann would be an all right Republican candidate. Your not going to win in Vermont being hard line against abortion, gay rights, etc. etc. I think that deficiets will be a major issue for at least the next 2 cycles. We owe 17 trillion dollars - and the amount Obama is spending dwarfs any deficiets racked up during the Bush year (which were inexcusable - but that is another rant for another day). His pro-military stance works with more conservative voters than your typical Democratic "I give up - lets quit Iraq, etc. b.s.

I will conceed, if Liebermann were a Republican, he would probabl frustrate most of us here. Maybe not to the extent of Snowe or Graham, but a top 5 contender.  But, would a Liebermann be better than, say, Chuck Schumer or Bernie Sanders - hell yes.

Would he be my idea candidate - no. But I live in Illinois, so I am in the minority here (for now). But could a Liebermann like canidate do well enough in some of the marginal blue areas around here to win - well see, cause I think Mark Kirk is going to make the run.

The other upside to this is that Liebermann may have opened the door for other wavering Democrats to go ahead and defy Reid. Here is the recent AP report on Blanch Lincoln (one of the most endangered Democrats in 2010)

The Associated Press reports that Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) spoke about the public option today, saying "We don't need to go there," but wouldn't say if she'd vote to block the health care reform bill from the Senate floor.

77 Joe is a Democrat to the core, but he's a good guy, and honest enough to call a pile of dogshit what it is. It's shameful the way the Donks chased him out of their caucus, because they really need him to pull in the moderates. A Democratic party with Joe Lieberman in it is far more dangerous than one without, because Joe draws a lot of centrists who are otherwised turned off by the likes of Pelosi and Reid.

I'm not one of those conservatives who love Joe when he's acting like a conservative but hate him when he's acting like a liberal; Joe is a liberal Democrat and has never been otherwise. I respect him for his honesty, which is a rare thing in either party nowadays. I wouldn't vote for him, but I respect him.

As a pure thought-exercise, sure, if he were branded as a Republican, Lieberman probably could be "bought" in Northeast States that usually elect Democrats.

Objectively, that's more or less what he is now!  A "not-Democrat" elected in a Northeast blue state.

In practice, he's probably not going to become a Republican, or he would have done so already (though that's always subject to how the political winds look when he's running for re-election.  Like all career politicians, I think he'd flop rather than leave elected office).

Even if he did change parties, it probably wouldn't change how he voted.

More importantly, he's ALREADY in a fairly blue state (CT), he's not leaving it, and he's technically not a Democrat.

83 more of an American liberal , not a World Socialists type.

Yep.  What a lot of people fail to realize is there is a very distinct ideological difference.  In the past 20 years of the rise of the world socialist types in American politics, they largely didn't really push hard enough to trigger the "hard stops" of the Lieberman types and it may have been difficult to see the difference in the past as a practical voting matter

With the Obamunists win, the hard core misread the election results and public sentiment completely and felt emboldened to push their hand in an environment where they were doomed to meet significant resistance and run into the "hard stops" of many JFK liberals.

The most curious take away from all this is the Obamunists continue to misread the public to this day and continue pushing shit that isn't going to fly.  In many ways I think the whole Obama administration is operating in a bubble of far greater magnitude than Bush ever did.

Once again I agree with Monty. Joe IS a liberal Dem. Anyone who voted for that bloated welfare bill labeled “stimulus” can NOT be considered a “fiscal conservative”. Basically, he is a 1960s vintage Dem which is where about half of the Repubs are at now.

Fox is slowly deftly caving and trying to make sure that you don't notice….

Fox has NEVER been a conservative news network. They have always tilted slightly to the left. Even idiot O’Reily said many of them were known to have voted for Obama, including Katrina Shep and Missing Girl Greta.

They have a couple of conservative “opinion shows” like Hannity and Beck and a couple of liberal Opinion shows like O’Reily and FNS. Their ‘fair and balanced” debates, at best, are between a commie Dem and a RINO Repub. In fact, the Repubs you see on the “news” segments the most are McLame and Graham.

People only “think” they are conservative because the rest of the MSM says they are and the Dems complain because they are not “leg tingling” batshit crazy for Obama and Nancy.

I would put most of the Fox News anchors of today as the equivalent of Walter Cronkite in the 60s.

Lieberman has a lifetime ACU rating of 15.96.  In comparison, Snowe has 47.88. Anyone below 75 is a RINO, anyone below 50 is a Democrat regardless of the letter after their name.

Also, as I said earlier, there are some bills that are so odious that if you vote for them you are automatically a RINO.
