Former NRCC Chair Tom Cole Endorses Hoffman

As Drew quips, "Who cares? He's from Oklahoma."

He doesn't have the easy familiarity with Candadian-border New York like former Royal Mountie/free-range syrup magnate Newt Gingrich does.

THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned that veteran and widely-respected Rep. Tom Cole (R, Okla.), former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee and a member of the GOP Steering Committee and a Deputy GOP House Whip, will be endorsing Doug Hoffman in the NY-23 race.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post says that sources close to "both" camps (not all three?) say Scozzoflava is imploding and it's now a two man race.

That last bit thanks to Hot Air's headlines, drawing a "Whoa" from Allah; main tip courtesy of Dave in Texas.

1 OT: Just heard on radio, someone broke into a lady's house, she got on her knees and started barking like a dog, the intruder got scared and left.

There must be a lesson for out of office conservatives there.

I wonder if all those Palin-bashing feminists are going to howl about the sexism inherent in abortion-loving Tweedle-Dede getting taken out by *gasp* a conservative man.

He is probably quite familiar with the Oklahoma-Texas border and how easy it is to cross the river between checkpoints.

33 Dear Newt:

We all get that you want a "big tent" party. The TEA Party folk actually are a natural big tent party. The only plank of the platform is: "Stop spending money! Dammit!"

If you can stand up and mean that sincerely, you'll get votes. Newt is looking at that and thinking "Arch-conservative! That means: Super FAIL!"

But there appear to be a lot of people whose political stance would normally be "moderate", and some old-school Democrats who might well embrace a sturdy push on this single plank as well.

Hell, the entire "social" position can be summed up with the response "Well, I'm not going to fund anything in this entire field - we just don't have the cash."

That position isn't anathema to a whole lot of people. And yet it would be pretty appealing to the right - we've already lost plenty of these battles. But in battles between a Republican candidate and a TEA Party candidate, the non-Republican is going to be able to say, "I'm not Lucy with the freaking football" with at least some credibility.

Posted by: Al at October 27, 2009 12:54 PM (VtygY)

34 I support Newt in his valiant effort to expand the GOP tent.

Posted by: Frum at October 27, 2009 12:55 PM (+sBB4)

35 I can remember a similar imbroglio from my home town many years ago during the Sheriff's election. One candidate was "electable" but was notoriously unreliable; the other guy was superb law-enforcement material but was a relative unknown. All the wise old heads wanted the "electable" guy to run -- yeah, he'd make a lousy Sheriff, but he would win. And to those guys, winning was what counted. Actually doing the job was of lesser consequence.

I think Newt is like many sports fans who will root for whomever wears the home team's jersey. He wants the team to win, which is laudable; but he doesn't much care how they do it, which isn't so laudable.

Newt is falling into the same trap that The Republicans since about year 1998 have fallen into.

The trap? It's letting your opponents define you. The left are freaking experts at this. Newt hears "Oh those Right Wing Religous Zealot Nazi Monkey F*%$er Meanies," and he thinks that we gotta roll over and play dead because, apparently if they say it, then it must be true, eh?

Apparently in The NRCC Zombie Bazarro World, where Unicorns crap Pixie Dust that cures Cancer, and Dogs sit down for Tea with Kitty's, you can defeat your rivals by proving that your not going to stand strong on your convictions and principles, and blurring the lines enforcing one Party/Ideological Domination.

If you want to win elections you gotta be clear exactly where you stand on every issue, draw a line in the sand, explain what seperates you from the other candidate, and shout from the RoofTops  why your plans/ideas are better.

If anything you'll gain respect and trust. Americans may not know exactly how to solve all of our problems, but when we get in a fix, we will get behind somebody as a Leader if we respect and trust them no matter what their Idilogical beliefs or Party Affiliation are.

42 Newt has a point. If the party went on a purity purge, he wouldn't be too far down on the list (didn't he dump his sick wife or something?) he has a lot of good attributes, but the scrutiny of a republican presidential run must make him nervous.

If Hoffman wins, in New York, that will really make Newt nervous about running for President in 2012. Plus, he will have to compete with Pawlenty for the slightly right of center vote in the primary. Newt isn't running. And if he does, he is done. 4th ro 5th in Iowa, 3rd in New Hampshire (behind Romney and Pawlenty) and then 6th or 7th in South Carolina (gets beat by Ron Paul).

its party loyalty. I do still respect newt to some degree. Anyone who likes history as much as him is a good guy in my book. However i do think  he is making a mistake here. Keep in mind he endorsed her before this shit storm started, if he had the chance to do it over again i think it is likely he would have pulled a Pawlenty and went in after everyone else cleared the way.

I would never vote for him for president, but i think the republicans would benefit from him being a governor, senator or congressman.

161 Can someone let me know if I am interpreting this wrongly. My Congressman, Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI), just posted this to his Facebook page. I interpret this article to be him pulling a Newt. If so, I can't tell you how much this absolutely disheartens me:

Why We Need the GOP -- Building on the Republican Base

TR campaigned for Blaine; but the splintered GOP lost to Cleveland -- the first Democrat elected President since the Civil War. Like the current contest in NY-23, TR’s putting “party loyalty above principle” irked many, as Nathan Miller records:

“The mugwumps were shocked and dismayed by Roosevelt ’s decision. Men who had praised him as the conscience of the Republican Party and its hope for the future now considered him a turncoat… In the end, Roosevelt suffered defeat on all fronts (and lamented that) ‘I do not believe that I shall ever be likely to come back into political life.’”

Fortunately for our country and party, TR later united the GOP’s disparate wings and is revered as the Republican “Rough Rider” not reviled as a “RINO.” Yes, he forgot his own history and bolted the party in 1912. The result was a splintered GOP’s loss to Woodrow Wilson -- the first Democrat elected President since Grover Cleveland. (Oh, and under Wilson, America also got stuck with the beloved Federal Reserve System.)

As in TR’s time, the Republican Party must unite to stem the dysfunction of our daunting era. We can’t build a winning coalition on ideological quicksand. All Republicans must work within the party to unite, expand and renew it; not work outside it to purge, deplete and “recreate” it in one’s arbitrary image.
