Who Are All These Politicians from Alaska, Minnesota, and Texas to Lecture New York Republicans on the Best Candidate for New York?, Wonders Newt Gingrich of Georgia

Yeah. Damn outside meddlers.

Gingrich also attacked Hoffman for not having proper knowledge of local issues and living outside the 23rd district.

"So I say to my many conservative friends who suddenly decided whether they're from Minnesota, or Alaska, or Texas, they know more than the upstate New York Republicans? I don't think so," Newt Gingrich said from his beautiful Savannah home, with north-facing windows offering a breathtaking view of view of northern New York's Niagra Falls.

I added that last part.

"This idea that we're suddenly going to establish litmus tests and all across the country we're going to purge the party of anybody who doesn't agree with us 100 percent; that guarantees Obama's reelection, that guarantees Pelosi as Speaker-for-life," he told Fox News last night.

Gingrich called Scozzafava a "liberal Republican" for her support of gay marriage and abortion rights. But he defended those positions as in-step with her district and her predecessor, former Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.), who was tapped to be President Barack Obama's Army Secretary.

I understand the concern about litmus tests and purges, but Scozzoflava does not pass a single test, litmus or otherwise, establishing her as conservative. She has long resisted any no-new-taxes pledge -- and in fact spoke favorably about them -- until Gingrich asked her to sign his pledge as a precondition for his support. Then she finally announced herself as against tax hikes.

As for her opposition to cap and trade and ObamaCare -- given the fact that she even supports card check, I'm thinking she's receptive to "new ideas" from the Democrats on these issues too, and her purported opposition is overstated.

I'm not exactly sure what he means about her being in-step with John McHugh on abortion. McHugh has a 100% rating from the National Right to Life Committee. He co-sponsored legislation to make it illegal to transport a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion (such trips taken to frustrate state laws on parental consent, etc.), which seems pretty hardcore on the issue.

But what do I know. I'm from downstate New York. I don't commute between Atlanta and Poughkeepsie like Newt Gingrich does every day.

Does Newt Gingrich understand the politics of NY-23? He doesn't seem to have done a thirty-second due diligence Google search on the race or McHugh's views of abortion.

Thanks to Gabriel Malor.

3 I understand where Newt is coming from... the only problem is that he's dead wrong on the NY-23 race and in general. The electorate is getting really really pissed and you don't get the votes of a pissed-off electorate by running candidates like Dede. Sorry Newt, you're torpedoing your 2012 chances (that is, if you're serious about wanting to run)...

What really confuses me is that it appears Hoffman now has a chance to win the seat! So, a republican will keep NY-23. Is Newt saying he would prefer a Scozzafava sort of Republican over a Hoffman kind of Republican? WTF!

That they had a chance to elect someone that resonate with voters. Newt never mentions that they rejected a primary race, fully knowing Scozz wouldn't win that primary.

So, no, We. Did. Not. Intimidate. You, Georgie Emptysuit. We retired your ass. See, he sent a New Year greeting/fundraising feeler around in early January 2008, and then about a week later announced he wasn't going to run in 2010.

A complete coincidence, I'm sure.

Of course, the powers that be (such as they be) here at the RINO factory in Ohio are preparing to try to saddle us with the gun-grabbing RINO turd Mike DeWine as the standard-bearer for Attorney General next year. Crist has now turned on him running ads against Obama for his primary battle while Rubio gains. 2. Crap and tax – if you believe in the AGW scam and support the current crap and tax bill you are not a conservative – single issue no vote

3. Healthscam – if you support ANY version of the current Dem commie take over of healthcare you are not a conservative – single issue no vote

I can (barely) forgive some of them for the TARP and bailouts, but only if that is not routine. The porkulous bill is borderline single issue, voting yes on that with any other lib votes makes you a lib.

93 Isn't Newt just following the party playbook?

I think this is a tough situation.  The local GOP did CHOOSE Scozzafava.  They scuttled the attempt to put it to a party vote of committeemen.  Newt is basically just saying the local party apparatus is good by him.

I would tread lightly in the district, but that's over now.  It's become one big clusterfuck with Kos endorsing Scozzafava for strategic policy reasons and not because he's a Democrat and sitting Republicans supporting the third party candidate that was rejected by the GOP.

The White House political operation is calling all the plays and Newt just runs into the line of scrimmage because that's what the safe play says.

One last item. When there are national implications in the decisions made by any Congresscritter that directly affect me (like Cap and Trade, the jobkiller), you'd better damn well believe I have a right to "meddle". I want to know who contributes to your campaign and how you intend to repay them for their support. I want to know where you stand on every single issue and whether you agree with my views, regardless of where I live.

That's not meddling. It's responsible citizenship.

98 Two thoughts:

1.) I think I know what Newt's going for, wanting to get as many Republicans into the House and Senate by any means necessary to set up for post-2010, but it's way too short sighted, since a significant portion of the party, if not the majority, as well as "unaffiliated" conservatives strongly oppose Scozzofava.  He wants to build a majority, but didn't learn the lesson from 1994 that simply being Republican isn't enough if you want to pass actual conservative legislation.

2.) Is this really the hill that Newt wants to die on?

107 I am not a politician, I won't ever take a political science class and I will never pretend to know what New Yorkers want or like.

As a "right of center" labeled person I become infuriated to see people like Dede S. tagged as a Rrepublican, Republicans IMHO are people of the mindset who start at the center and move to the right, Dede is obviously way left of center and maybe that is what New York wants.Hopefully the New Yorkers will pick the Democrat if they want left of center so that us Republicans don't have to suffer through humiliating shinanigans with Dede S. as we did with the gang of 7, the swindlers such as Lindsay Graham who are pushing the cap and trade nonsense, just to provide the swindlers with another cash cow or the Olympia Snow types who has never missed an opportunity to advance the left of center's agenda.

I'm not with Newt in the sense of being a seat counter, I would much rather have a person that fits the bill of what he/she is running as and take fewer seats for now.

The thing that Newt may want to ponder is that simple folks like me don't see much difference between the D and the R at this point in time, when you have Newt pushing for the wrong person for the wrong reason in simple folks minds and when we have Lindsay G. doing his new bit, it is almost as if the D or the R would rather be leaders in a much less free nation and are working behind the scene to come to the same conclusion............Less liberty and more socialism.

110 All you need to know about Newt:

Right after Katrina he was on TV (Fox) bashing George Bush for not responding better and his big suggestion was a Marshal Plan for the Gulf Coast.  (For those of you too young to remember and poorly educated by public schools, the Marshal Plan was a massive injection of US money into the economy of war-devastated Europe, particularly Germany, in order to get their economy growing again.)

So,  a "Marshal Plan for the Gulf Coast" meant "massive federal spending.

Then Congress,  stampeded by people on TV like Newt,  passed that big Gulf Coast aid bill.  I am sure you all remember the gift cards used for booze and strippers, the people who weren't even from Louisiana or Mississippi filing claims, checks written to dead people,  etc.

So about 10 months later Newt is on Fox again,  commenting on the fraud and thievery, and you know what he said?  "This is what happens when the federal government tries to operate aid programs."

A complete 180 in less than ten months,  and with no explanation.  The only thing I can conclude is that in both instances, getting on TV meant criticizing Bush and the Republicans. In one instance for not doing something,  and the other instance for doing something.

He's an opportunist and media whore.  I ignore anything he says,  and have done so  ever since 10 months after Katrina.

Is there actual evidence of this?  I won't rule it out.  I know of a candidate in IL10 that is a Republican that the state party thinks has the best shot to keep the seat in the GOP, but the candidate they have in mind is a Dede Scozzafava.  What is different is the local party is saved by an actual ruling from the Republican voters in a primary.

I just don't know what to do if there is no primary to protect the party and they have to choose a candidate they THINK can win.

126 Newt jumped the shark when he sat on the sofa with Nancy Pelosi to ply us regarding AGW.

Before I worry about money or any other issue, I worry about life, and Scozzafava is a committed “pro-choice” (i.e., advocate of legalized murder) candidate. Before people jump on me about being a single issue voter, I'm not, but I do START at abortion.  As has been stated here many times, government grabs power like a black hole, and a government that allows the culling of the most defenseless of its populace will be inclined to expand that power.  It's the real slippery slope.  As much as I have paying taxes, I hate being dead more, and I suspect I'd really hate being dead at the hands of my government.  So, to people saying "abortion is negotiable" and "don't be a single issue voter," it's about a lot more than abortion.  It's about euthanasia, population control, and the devaluation of life, which is one of the inalienable right enumerated in the Declaration of Independence.

Newt doesn’t need to fade away, he needs to shut his trap and GO away.  He was a clever politician, but his dalliances and inability to adhere to conservative principles accelerated this country's turn left.  STFU already, Newt.

And, to support Jazz's comment, usually the pro-abortion types run by the GOP are RINOs and not libertarians, so voting for the baby-killers isn't (at least) getting you a fiscal conservative--it's giving you a social liberal and a socialist spender.

Obviously, you've never lived in upstate/rural NY or studied the demographics much or you wouldn't be saying such stupid shit.  There are large parts of upstate whose shores 1960's never washed up on, where the residents are every bit as conservative as Barry Goldwater was.

These same residents despise democrats and the whole greater NYC area and wish it would simply drop off the map.  You only need to go 20 miles outside liberal Albany to be in areas that are every bit as remote, forbidding, and populated with xenophobic hostiles as the cast of Deliverance was.  These people have no use for government, and liberal democrat government in particular.

167 The GOP would rather have a winner beholden to the Faction for her seat than one who isn't. They don't care about anything else.

Not anything.

Do you understand yet?

Good take.  Does Newt have an official standing at NRCC?  Why would he endorse anyone?  Who was the last former Representative to make a run and sit in the Oval Office?

Goodbye, Newt, thanks for the memories.  No, really, get lost, you bother me.

Have you guys even looked at a map to see where NY-23 is?

Niagara Falls 230mi / 3.5 ours from Watertown, NY, and Poughkeepsie is 279mi / 4.5 hours from Watertown.

It's called geography, guys.

Newtie was smart and savvy and he had charisma. Too bad he couldn't keep his pecker in his pants, and too bad that he was so vain that he was vulnerable to flattery of sycophants, who told him what he wanted to hear, not what was going on out here in the real world..

John Boehner has all of the smarts and savvy and charisma of a limp, wet noodle. There isn't a single Republican in Congress now that has any style. They are all bland, void of any leadership skills. ..

For the time-being, let's concentrate on getting rid of unprincipled and ineffective, current Republicans, and let's replace them with some dynamic Republicans, preferably hard-core conservatives. There isn't one of them there now who has any potential. Not even one.

Just a thought.
