Dang, the ROE change was McChrystal's order. And for the most part, they make sense. You can hardly save the villagers by bombing their houses as a first resort. Troops in contact can still get air and artillery support, but the sad fact is, a change from a CounterTerror strategy to a COIN strategy will mean increased risks and casualties for US troops. On the other hand, the chances of eventual success go up. How can I say this without sounding callous? I'm willing to spend US lives to achieve an objective.

The military have a workable plan that has a good chance of succeeding.  Obama would be a fool to ignore the advice of the professionals who know what they are doing, though he's done a lot of that through radical arrogance.  On the other hand, Obama has a base of wacked out anti-American, military hating radicals who are against even sending the military out for sandwiches at lunch.  My guess is that Obama will split the difference and give the military half of what it needs and the loony Left half of what it demands.
