Powerful words from the homefront

The brother and father of a Marine fighting the war in Afghanistan have some solid advice for our politically-challenged Commander in Chief.

As family members of a Marine deployed in Afghanistan, we know the
importance of timely decisions in the heat of battle--indecision in the
field puts troops at risk and leads to casualties. Likewise, the
president's indecision about the next steps in Afghanistan is placing
the overall mission and the troops on the ground at risk.

Announcing his counter-insurgency strategy for Afghanistan this past
March, President Obama said, "If the Afghan government falls to the
Taliban or allows al-Qaeda to go unchallenged, that country will again
be a base for terrorists who want to kill as many of our people as they
possibly can." This commitment was clearly re-affirmed by the president
in an August speech before the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Yet, the
president and his advisers are now engaged in a prolonged process of
re-thinking America's Afghanistan strategy. What has changed?

According to the White House, it would be irresponsible to act until
a credible resolution to the presidential elections in Afghanistan
emerges. But we fear, as many have reported, that the real reason for
delay is anxiety amongst civilian White House aides that an escalation
in Afghanistan will derail the president's domestic agenda. On the
latter, let us be clear--considerations of political expediency have no
place in the president's war room.

Man up Sir.

I think the rant I did just after he took office is particularly apt right now

The old guy is right.  Obama is waffling because he is scared shitless of making any decision at all, because he'll piss somebody off no matter what he decides.  He has no experience with leadership, and thus does not understand that the nature of decisions is that they always piss somebody off.  He's on that journey of self-discovery that Hillary! warned us about.

Great rant, UJ.

Obama will send in more troops, then change the ROE enough to render them ineffective. After about 18 months of this bullshit, Obama will start pulling out, and declare this an unwinnable war. Taliban and/or AQ fill the void, followed by a rogue nuke attack in NY harbor.

I really hope I'm wrong, but The Vapid One® just doesn't have the intellect to make a truly effective decision that promotes American goals or values. Perhaps a prayer for wisdom is in order, in addition to the ones for the troops and their families.

Ah yes, I remember now. Discovered by British archaeologist Lord Fauntleroy Fudgehammer in the late 19th century near Athens. The story is that he tripped over the portruding corner of the scrolls while running to the loo after a rough night of Athenian moonshine and fried goat entrails.

The scrolls were rumored to be cursed because he subsequently died on the WC immediately thereafter. Recent lab analysis shows that he was actually overcome by his own fumes.

The most interesting thing about όνειρα από τον πατέρα μου is that Dr. Nathaniel Puddingtits of Princeton Agricultural originally translated it as "Le Musings Marxiste de le Bebe Daddy".  Sadly, before his works could be confirmed, the only known extant copy of the work was in the hands of a Dr. Ayers of Chicago when it was destroyed by fire, apparently a conflagration involving Sudafed, Brake Cleaner, and a water-filled smoking device shaped like a VW bus.

40 Obama has manned up. He is not dithering. He is engaged in a Strategic Delay. He is waiting for the situation to deteriorate to such an extent that there will be a groundswell of public opinion demanding withdrawal. He will then do what he wants to do: withdraw.

The problem is not that Obama lacks courage or that he's stupid or naive. It's takes great courage to throw a war, but I think he's up to the job. He has 90% of the media engaging in malpractice and even his opponnets are afraid to point out that he didn't write that book or to ask him to produce papers proving he's eligible for the office he's occupying.

I'm saying he's not eligible. I am saying he's been empowered by the application of special rules, which apply only to him.

This idea that we somehow have as our national security, the need to create a civil democracy in Afghanistan, is nonsense.

THANK YOU for this video!

also, on a sidenote... I notice Gibbs keeps saying "President will make a decision on Afghan. in the next few weeks"

What the hell? what the heck has the weakling being doing since March? I am convinced 100% that the weakling is waffling b/c he doesn't want to jeadordize the sinking 1 trillion dollar death-care plan.  The US miltiary is already being used as a political pawn by this man who considers the US constitution "fundamentally flawed"

God Bless the troops, they already have a weakling man "in charge" and proven time and time again how much disdain he has for the US military. I was not fan of Bush, but Bush was man enough to do what was necessary and  put the troops first, even as he, Bush, was ripped apart in the media. Bush at least understood the grave dangers this country faces, and the harsh sacrifices the men and women of the military make.

59 Cacti, you're still a fucking idiot. Research the Afghan War. In 1986, it was fucking over. Heavy tactical air support allowed ground forces of both the Soviet-backed Afghan government and the Soviets themselves to crush the muhajedin. The muj who were still alive were in refugee camps on the other side of the Khyber Pass in Pakistan. Reagan's decision to supply man-portable Stinger SAMs to the muj allowed them to knock down troop carrying helicopters, their Mi-24 Hind gunship support, and kept their fixed-wing air support (Flogger-D's, Frogfeet, and Flankers) up at altitudes where the CAS was less effective. Soviet losses skyrocketed, especially in expensive aircraft. This came in 1987-1988 when the Soviets were needing money to work on their own version of ballistic missile defense, expanding/modernizing their offensive nuclear arsenal, and Gorbachev was starting to realize he could afford the strategic war against the US or the theater war against an American proxy. Not both.

Second point to remember, the Soviets did not invade Afghanistan for the sake of Afghanistan. They wanted it as a stepping stone to invade Pakistan. Karachi, Pakistan would give them a warm water port that is not behind a hostile land obstacle (like the Black Sea and Baltic). That goal has been an ongoing objective of Russian/Soviet foreign policy since Peter the Great.

61 Obama doubled the force in A-Stan in his first 8 months. These were the troops that were requested under Bush by McKiernan but Bush only supplied 20% of that request

Posted by: John ryan at October 25, 2009 11:13 AM (m0Q2u)

62 John, McKiernan also made that request before those same brigades he got (2nd and 4th of the 82nd for specific example) had finished their post-Iraq refitting where they had been part of the 2007 Iraq surge. The Army's ability to generate deployable forces on schedule drives the train more than politics. That's one reason so much of the troop movement into Afghanistan has been the Marines. If they cut into the number of Marine Expeditionary Units deployed worldwide, the USMC has a little more flex in their force generation model.

Sorry, you want to try anything else?
