Clash Of The Titans: Palin Will Appear On Oprah

No hard feelings over last year's boycott I guess.

Oprah Winfrey, on a campaign to climb back from last season's ratings slump, will attempt to kiss and make up with conservative viewers on Nov. 16 when she has Sarah Palin on her syndicated talk show.

...It's not just another show booking for Oprah Winfrey. She's going whole hog this season to try to recover from the ratings tumble she took last season when her audience slid to under 7 million viewers. And, during one awful week in July, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" suffered its smallest ratings since its debut way back in 1985.

Industry navel gazers speculated Oprah had turned off some of her conservative viewers -- or, more accurately, they had turned her off -- when she not only endorsed then presidential candidate Barack Obama but even campaigned for him. (Palin, of course, was the running mate of Obama's rival, Sen. John McCain.)

It was the first time Oprah had stripped off her apolitical veneer and publicly endorsed a political candidate. At the time, Oprah told CNN's Larry King she did it because "what [Obama] stands for" was "worth me going out on a limb for."

And her ratings took a tumble, though hers was not the only syndicated show to lose audience last season and she still managed to wind up at the top of the syndication heap at season's end.

Even so, Oprah has largely abandoned her whole aspirational programming mantra this season and gone in for the more purely commercial.

Not all of Oprah's fans are happy.

So does big Obama supporter Oprah go after Palin or is it a softball fest?

My guess it's more of the latter. What's the upside for Oprah in going after Palin as if Oprah were a real journalist? If it's a ratings ploy (and it is, it always is), why lure an audience in only to piss them off?

They'll touch on some touchy stuff (Bristol and Levi, etc) but mostly it'll be light and appreciative. Then will the media go after Oprah for letting Public Enemy Number 1 off easy?

The big question is, when does Allah's dream come true and Palin appears on The View (with Meghan McCain guest hosting)?

In other TV news...Obama has been absent from TV (for him anyway) but thankfully that will be fixed tomorrow. He's doing an exclusive interview with what he seems to think is a 'real news organization', NBC.

You know NBC, the people who employ Andrea Mitchel, who doesn't think George Soros is "far left".

You see 'real news organizations' and reporters come to the defense of someone not there by interjecting their own opinion. That's journalism!

3 Half the comments that should be in this thread are actually at the tail-end of the Rasmussen thread...

It will be interesting to see how the MSM previews this interview; we'll get a mini-assessment on the extent to which ITS OBVIOUS that Palin is a dim dope (and by implication, ObaMao is brilliant).

7 It's a big audience for Palin to grab onto--her book is coming out the next day, so it makes sense. If she does stellar, and I have no doubt she will, she'll reach out to a large woman audience that the media cut her off from, and she can sell a ton more books.

10 Lose-lose for Oprah. She lost the conservative viewers - and won't gain enough of them back to make a difference with a one-time appearance by any republican or conservative, no matter how she plays it.

Plus, she loses the support of a lot of hard-left liberals by even having a conservative on the show, let alone someone like Palin.

Oprah was better off telling us about thread counts on bedding and giving cars to poor people. Becoming (openly) a political partisan was not a good business decision. You can't piss off half of your potential customer base and expect to make a profit. (See MSM, NYT, Chicago Tribune, NBC, et al.)

18 Oh, I think the interview will be all about emotions, feelings, personal triumphs and tribulations and other feminine twattle.

What else would it be about? Policy? Please.

It might help Palin sell more books but I don't think it will improve her image or political prospects. Unless your Barry and you go Oprah so she can swoon over you, her format will only make Palin look like a weak housewife.

That will be Oprah's goal anyway.

Hopefully the inner dialog of some of her audience goes like this:

34 Smart move on Palin's part. She will have direct access to Oprah's
audience. Hopefully she will be able to show them that the SCM created
caricature of her is complete fiction. I am sure it will be a softball
interview, with Oprah going out of her way to show how inclusive she
is, now that her world view is safely ensconced and dominant.

If Oprah tries to to play hardball, or throws out the typical conservative 'gotcha!' questions, I hope Palin hits back twice as hard.

35 #28, Tweet, does it matter what Oprah asks or Sarah says? Many people either like Palin or don't and those who don't like her will find plenty to mock about what she says. She wants to sell her book, and this gives her a chance to bring it forward to a lot of people who don't otherwise know about it and might want to buy it.

I went to NewsBusters and read some of the comments they posted on Oprah's site. The tone that struck me was that Sarah Palin just wants to make money, don't have her on so she'll be able to make any money from her book. Well, duh, idiots, why do you think people who have written books go on these shows in the first place, and why do you think you can decide who gets to make money and who doesn't?

Was also struck by the comment that we all know that Sarah didn't write the book, someone else wrote it for her. Wonder how many of them have doubts that Obama actually wrote "Dreams of My Father"?

I'm sure she has a retort that will bring down the house like she usually does. She can't hide forever and if she takes the questions and answers truthfully that will go a long way to swaying voters. At the Republican convention she was a little early with her jabs at Obama. The people are much more willing to listen than they were before. Remember also, politics is like a pendulum. We are in a leadership void at the moment. If she is decisive and looks like a leader, the people will follow especially after a period of time that lacks leadership.

If Tina Fey starts up her schtick again, there will be a big fat opportunity for Lorne Micheals to get Palin as SNL host in late Nov or early Dec. Face to face, poor Tina doesn't have a chance in hell. Sarah is many, many more megawatts of star power than Tina will ever be.

This is going to be fun, watching her deal with all of these parasitic whores in the TV business.

56 It'll really be interesting how Palin's future shapes up. I loved her during the election campaign, but I had to admit I was really taken aback when she resigned. Just seemed like a very erratic (almost McCain sort of thing) to do.

But I have to give the woman credit; since that time she almost single-handedly torpedoed Obama's "public option" BS, and yet may be instrumental in defeating Obamacare altogether. The Left sure as hell sees tremendous potential in her - they loath her in direct proportion to how much they fear her. Make no mistake - all their dismissive swipes at her is just smoke to cover their horror at her obvious talent.

But I'm just not sure I can support her 100 percent yet. I'm afraid she might turn out to be a conservative version of Ross Perot, a flashy talker that ultimately goes nowhere.

Yep, this is a trap, for sure. The Left knows that Tina Fey did not fully destroy Sarah Palin enough, so they are sending out Oprah to finish her off, to assure Obama's re-election in 2012.

The mass media is 100% propaganda machine now, the Administration has no problem admitting their love for mass-murdering dictators like Mao and putting Rush and Fox News Channel on their enemies list... and have not had any repurcussions for such behavior.

Now it's Oprah's turn to do her duty in service to Obama and take out Sarah Palin. She's not worried about losing audience. This is more important.

This is a setup, in order to destroy Sarah Palin once and for all. She better be ready.

68 ...It's not just another show booking for Oprah Winfrey. She's going whole hog this season to try to recover from the ratings tumble she took last season when her audience slid to under 7 million viewers. And, during one awful week in July, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" suffered its smallest ratings since its debut way back in 1985
Bwhahaha! Historically, whenever Oprah dieted and lost weight, her ratings would decline. The reason cited that when she's heavy, regular women could identify with her and had this kindofkinship with her (like she knows the struggles of the every woman when she's fat). I find this huge slide in her ratings especially hilarious since she is looking quite larded up these days. Obviously, her old strategy of living large to boost ratings isn't doing it any more. So her ideology not her appearance are what caused her ratings to bomb. This doesn't bode well for her in the long run. Yeah, she can have Sarah on and have monster ratings for one show (you know people that love and hate Sarah will tune in, one to say amen, sistah, the other to mock the "chillbilly"), but then she will continue to pimp her narrow mindedone world view and continue shilling for Obama. So in the end, Oprah is going to continue to spiral on down. She has tied herself so inextricably to Obama and her chit chat buddy, Michelle, she is going to pay the ultimate price in the long run. I can forsee when things get to a low enough point, she will pack up the show and retire with one of those "Well, I've been doing this for a really long time, and I need to move on and do all these other things I've been wanting to do, but haven't been able to because I've been working so tirelessly on this show. I need to spend more time with the dogs and Stedman, so I will be leaving to do that and to work on other projects."

71 Overall, I think this is a smart move by Palin, less smart by Oprah. Here's why:

For Palin, it's obvious. Go on the highest-rated talkin'-women show. Millions of women (and gay men, and straight men trapped in Jiffy-Lube waiting rooms) will see that she's not the Tina Fey caricature, not some religious fanatic, not a goose-stepping killer. Most minds will not be changed, but a few will, and the Oprah-watching public's comfort level with Mrs. Palin will rise incrementally. She goes on talk shows and hawks her books, just like a real celebrity!

For Oprah, it's a minefield. No matter what she does, she pisses off someone. If she does a hit piece on Sarah, that finishes the job of alienating conservative viewers, and makes at least a few of her independents realize just how biased Oprah -- and thus, all media -- really are. If she does a standard Oprah softball interview, she pisses off her hardcore liberal viewers and possibly even risks offending The ONE himself. What does she gain? Maybe a few very gullible conservatives will decide she's not so badly biased after all, and her defenders can say "She interviewed Palin!" in blog comment flamewars during the runup to 2012 when Oprah's bias again becomes flagrant. But will this lure back disaffected conservative ex-fans? I doubt it.

2. If she really has no interest in politics anymore but wants to make a killing with her book, certainly this will give her a huge boost.

Time will tell which of these is the real reason.

78 Don't worry. Sarah will get elected President and then we can get rid of politics as usual by outlawing both parties and installing the glorious reign of Queen Sarah I, where no one will be divisive ever again because no opposition will be tolerated.

America will have three centuries of successive Queen Palins, leading to a final, unbreakable peace throughout the world.

79 Oprah's doing this for one reason: for herself. Her ratings are in the toilet -- where they should be -- thanks to her season of stomach-turning sycophancy, and now she's trying to save her checkbook. (Well, maybe she's less concerned about her checkbook than her spotlight.)
Palin was supremely stupid for accepting. She didn't need this kind of promotion; not only is Oprah's audience too imbecilic to read a book -- and I do mean a book, not the pap Oprah promotes with her insulting Book Club -- anyone left watching her show isn't going to be interested in what an actual female has to say. And the aftermath? If Sarah's good, you'll hear nothing, and if she's not, you'll hear everything.
I would prefer it if Palin would step out of the limelight for a while, take care of her family, and be more selective about her media exposure. This sort of self-promotion-without-a-goal comes off as desperate.

Can't imagine SP choosing to go on with that that, well you know what i mean. I don't know, but I think Palin is actually being smart. She is going into the den of the lions--which shows she has big brass ones. Like someone mentioned earlier, she is a quick study, and I think she did learn from her Katie Carwreck and Charles Bibson interviews. I think Sarah will do just fine. I also think that there will be people who watch the interview who will have a different opinion of her than they did before (case in point, read some of the letters to the editor in Runner's World after her interview in Runnersworld.com). The media eviscerated Sarah during the election, but she didn't have the opportunity to respond (plus the McCain campaign had her on lockdown). This interview will present her an opportunity to show who she really is, and she does connect well with real people. It will be interesting to watch Oprah's body language during the interview. She did a show last year where she visited soldiers at Walter Reed. You could just tell she wasn't really comfortable and really out of her element. You could tell she was looking for that one soldier who was going to be all bitter and blaming Bush, and she was shocked she couldn't find one. Every one of those injured (and some very severely) service people said if they had the chance, they would serve all over again. She was dumbstruck. In fact she closed her show with that thought, and she was crying. Even though Oprah "didn't get it", you could see that everyone of these wounded soldiers left an huge impression on her. That's something you can't just brush off. I think it's going to haunt her the rest of her life. I hope hearing Sarah Palin haunts her too. Here's a woman with a story that Oprah would normally love--young, fiesty, smart, go getter dealt some real challenges in life who goes up against the good old boys in government and gets things done without losing sight of who she is or changing just to fit in.

If Palin wanted to win anything again, she should not have resigned. You don't quit when faced with adversity and then expect someone to believe in you again. That hurdle will be the hardest simply because it's the only real criticism the Left has on her. Everything else -- she's stupid, she's a hick, she's a Barbie doll, etc -- is fraudulent.

Yeah, just like how all the newspapers and newshows kept that running death tally of the troops when President Bush was CinC. I'm sure the reason we haven't seen that since the Bamster's been Pres is that there is some misfunction of the screencrawlers going on. Sarah Palin agreeing to go on the Oprah show is just as embarrassing as her claiming she went on SNL without knowing how they had been eviscerating her week after week. You can let one stupid act go, not two. Plus I have made it a top priority never to watch the big O and to encourage friends to ween themselves from her program. If Sarah Palin has changed her mnd about the presidency and politics in general and she is going to make money from her book and the talk circuit and make herself comfortable for life that is fine. That is what Sarah's agreeing to go ont he big o's show is signaling to me and many others. The GOP should look for another candidate.

Post presidenting, I see the swag he is going to rake in make Bill Clinton look like The Artful dodger with just a few purloined silk handkerchiefs and some chump change.

140 Oprah is obviously going to focus on three things: Sarah's decision to resign, Sarah's reference to "death panels," and Sarah's motivation for writing a book.
I hope she does. It will give Sarah some great opportunities to "educate" people. And yeah, I hope that Sarah brings up the fact how Oprah is one of the richest people in America, and how everyone deserves the opportunity to make money like Oprah and keep the money they work so hard for. I hope Sarah gives Oprah viewers a good lesson in civics 101 and the harm being inflicted on this country by high taxes, entitlements and gubamint spending. I also hope she gets to bring up American exceptionalism, to remind people how great this country really is.I would expect her to give a shout out to the military too.

One of two things will happen if Palin appears on Oprah:

2) Palin will do pretty well, gaining new converts, book sales, and cash, but mostly political capital. The Left will be going absolutely insane for days. Oprah will take for more heat than she is now for the sin of letting Palin on her show.

The Oprah audience members are precisely the people that Palin needs to appeal to in order to broaden her base. She can't just preach to the choir. She has to talk to people who are hostile to her, in the hope that she can reach at least some of them.

Palin has the nerve to appear on Oprah, despite Oprah's outspoken support for her opponent. Obama won't appear on Fox, despite the fact that that's the way to reach out to, and win over, people who are hostile to him. Says a lot about both people, I think.

210 Orca may have lost audience due to her worship of 'Teh One', but that will not prevent her from trying to gut Sarah on stage. You have to remember; Those Who Are No Longer Our Countrymen will gladly give up money if it supports the Revolution. Look at the state controlled media, and look at Hollywood. They don't care if they lose money, just so long as the propaganda is delivered. So I expect that it will be on.

Do I think that she should? Part of me wants to reject TWANLOC completely. I'd love to have Sarah tell her to fold her show til it's all corners and scare the hell out of her proctologist. But then again, Sarah is not like the Eunuch Republicans we are suffering from. She will go towards the sound of the guns. I won't watch Orca, but I will hope to hear that an Orca got dragged into a whaling ship to have her blubber rendered.

212 I don't know that I'm the only woman who can say
this, but I've never watched Oprah's show even one time, and having
Sarah on won't make me want to watch it.

Posted by: FoxNews at October 20, 2009 08:35 PM (iGCmo)
Never watched Oprah either.
Trust me - there are MEELLEEEuns of us. We who find Teh Cult of Oprah and its ditzy followers alternately amusing and baffling.
That said, the awesomeness of Palin is enough to make me tread into bubblehead waters just once. Fire up the TiVo!

Posted by: Eviva F. at October 21, 2009 07:13 AM (b0sdZ)

213 I'm in favor of her appearing anywhere she wants, if she wants street cred. Well mostly anywhere, not MSNBC/Letterman/SNL (once was enough).
I wouldn't watch Oprah on a bet either, but HotAir may extract a clip or two I'd watch.
Going on the View and having Whoopie compare her to a slaveowner/Nazi would make Allahpundit's day.

Posted by: waelse1 at October 21, 2009 07:38 AM (qiFPn)

214 Now she has a chance to tell all of the "intellegentsia elite" what they wouldn't dream of listening to just a short 9 months ago.
Now that DUUUHHHH WON's baby is about to be born we still have a chance at a late term abortion. Call your congress critters!

Posted by: harleycowboy at October 21, 2009 07:49 AM (JKGfQ)

215 I cannot criticize Sarah for appearing on Oprah, while criticizing Obama for avoiding Fox News. Lets be consistent here morons! I only hope Sarah insists on video taping everything, with her own crew, in case Oprah tries to pull a Katie Couric.

Posted by: SunBird at October 21, 2009 08:23 AM (N10Ns)

216 Last paragraph of the linked article is the best:

Meanwhile, "Say You're One of Them," a collection of short stories
by Nigerian Uwem Akpan -- Oprah's latest book club selection -- was
ranked No. 84.

We rest our case.

Losing her conservative viewers has really impacted her branding power, her ability to sell.

Meanwhile, I hope our gal Sarah makes her grovel.

Posted by: TheRedDianthus at October 21, 2009 08:30 AM (4UkCP)

217 Given that it's stil 2...0009, an hour of Oprah is a pretty good surrogate for confronting Obamao. I hope this does Palin good.

Posted by: ParisParamus at October 21, 2009 08:41 AM (uNoW1)

218 I would agree with her going on Oprah as long as it is broadcast live, or at least, unedited. I hoipe Sarah has learned her lesson there.

Posted by: Vic at October 21, 2009 09:00 AM (CDUiN)

219 This might be a very clever ploy by Palin. Opera diva lost a nice chunk of her viewers last year with her partisan hackery (which has always been there, just got let out of the closet). So she's already in a sort of "grovel" mode -- which I'm sure ticks her off greatly.
Palin does need to step into the lion's den, but she has to be careful about how she does it. This is potentially a perfect set up for her: the audience will be split: lefties who will expect (nay, demand) that Opera go after Palin tooth and nail, righties who will be hoping that Opera goes back to her play nice, sisterhood spiel and gives a nice, feel good interview to a private citizen with a new book coming out (remember, Palin isn't a politician anymore! She's a housewife with an interesting life experience! Sistahood!), and the in-betweens who will turn in and expect much what the righties are hoping for, with maybe a little political back and forth but nothing too partisan (it is only a talk show which traditionally is supposed to focus on puff pieces and Sistahood!!!!).
So...Palin only has to act chill, together, and pleasant (which she can easily do). This will make her look good to the righties (most of whom already love her, but maybe pick up some more women who identify with her) and the in-betweens (who may decide she was a smart, articulate woman who has much more in common with them and stood for their interests than they previously thought), the lefties are not going anywhere and why bother. Opera has all the onus (sp?)on her: if she goes after Palin (even in a snarky, subtle bitchy way) the predominantly female audience will pick up on it and be turned off -- the righties and some of the in-betweens, because a show about puff pieces and Sistahood!! shouldn't be piling on a private citizen, after all, she isn't a politician anymore right? "can't we all just move along now? you're guy won already!". Opera loses viewers again (with twice as much angry vehemence!), and Palin gets some sympathy and possibly some support down the road. If Opera doesn't go after Palin the lefties get pissed (which will be noted down the road by the rest of the public in the blogosphere, no?), and Opera stands to lose support from them (and don't count out Narcissus and his lovely wife being pissed off too and sending out the flying monkeys to do a little sniping too).

Palin just needs to be prepared for the whole range of puff sistahood piece, to all out ambush, and with particular caution to the snippy, snarky areas inbetween. If she manages to pull it off (and it shouldn't be hard) then win-win for her, and big loser for the Opera house.

here is no denying that buying Swiss Replica Watches
has become a trend in modern society. However, it is not an easy task
to find a high quality one especially you a freshman in the related
field. You have to collect as much information as you can about the
retailer who you are going to deal with because its credit standing
directly influences the quality to the timepiece. Therefore, Replica Rolex
of guidelines are offered for you to make a right decision.

Firstly, you can never to too cautious on checking the details of a
replica watch. A reputable website usually comes with a good number of
pictures which display the watch details such as markings, engravings,
materials and dial face features. Everyone wants to buy an imitation
with high grade leather strap or stainless steel bracelet. Usually
speaking, the quality Rolex Replica
is made up of sapphire crystal glass and Swiss made movement so that
the durability and time accuracy are ensured.

Secondly, make sure that you are buying from a reliable source. It
should be evaluated before you make a choice on the style. As far as we
know, there are a large number of dealers who are doing the similar
business. At a temporary time, it is impossible to have a thorough
knowledge about all of them. Thus, you are recommended to search as much
information as you can to evaluate its reputation. For a good Rolex Daytona,
it always comes with available telephone number which can be used for
consultant or online services. What is more, the trustworthy website
guarantees periodical refund for quality issue Swiss Replica Omega.
According to my experience, the best way is to check the customer
satisfaction including the positive and negative feedbacks from the
previous buyers.
